- Legendary producer FLOOD explains the production work to make Depeche Mode's Enjoy the Silence. Recorded with my iphone on May 14th, 2011 at the Roundhouse in London (Short Circuit presents Mute festival).
Sorry about the quality... but I find this one slightly better than other videos of the same event.
About the final part "and then…": and then FLOOD went on saying a rough mix was done in 2 days and then Francois Kevorkian mixed it but they weren't happy so they turned back to the rough mix that was recorded on a crappy cassette and worked hard to copy that mix exactly because that was when they got it right and perfect. And the whole point of his speech was that the "art" and the "craft" i.e. the artist and the producer have to work together in trust and harmony in order to make unforgettable music. That's what I remember. :) you'll find his whole speech somewhere on the tube
That is what didn't happened in the Exciter album lol
Thank you for completing this thought for the rest of us!
One of the skills Alan had,in my opinion, is that he could put some light whenever Martin's demos were too dark without betraying the nature of the songs.
interesting observation of yours and true also..
Or vice versa. "To Have and to Hold" is a good example of the reverse, Martin preferred a lighter treatment (Spanish Taster version), and Alan preferred darker (album version).
The Wilder touch....genius
I LOVE how he brought up how there’s this question on whether or not it’s a happy or sad song. This, I think, is the basis for its success, because it’s like a mixture of a rare emotion that can’t really be outright categorized (as happy or sad, or tough, or soft like with regular songs) but it’s an emotion that we’ve all felt, for sure, but don’t really have a word for it. It’s an amalgam of several. I won’t go into describing what that is. I have my own interpretation, and I’m sure you do to. But it’s part of why this is a work of art, and a brilliant one at that.
For me, this is the brilliance of Depeche Mode and how I find most of their songs to be... why I love & respect their music so much. Feelings and spaces of dark & light abound and gives mystery and speak to core emotions
Is this a happy or sad song….. something that ABBA worked out a long time before….also worked for DM
I've seen this countless times, and it gives me chills EVERY GOD DAMNED TIME
ENJOY THE SILENCE and Duran durans ORDINARY WORLD are 2 of the most heavenly tracks ever.
I never get bored of them and this is so intriguing
Brilliant how everything just fell together perfectly. Little did they know this would become their ANTHEM
Flood is the best! Hope he will be working with DM one day. They made best albums: Violator and SOFAD, so it is logic to repeat this success. One thing to mansion, on both albums there was Alan Wilder, so if he also reunites DM it will be really something!
They need Alan Wilder back. Albums have been lacking without his input / production.
Wilder and flood was a winning combo for sure!
@@scotthandler3314 I love how Alan remixed In Chains, we need him back
All I ever wanted all I ever needed was Depeche mode. Thank you for the music that carried me through some tough times.
That was rather lovely and enjoyable to watch. Thank you for posting it. I found myself laughing at his anecdotes several times and had to rewind. Good storyteller, I hope Martin's seen this :)
Wilder's suggestion for Enjoy The Silence became a pulsating, up-tempo track, not a disco song.
The played this sort of Chicago house-esque stuff in discos around the world, same with Madonna's "Vogue".
Wilder is missed in DM's music for sure. DM is no longer the same
@@DxModel219 Thats for sure
This is wonderful. Perhaps one of the most sophisticated songs to hear and decipher ; due to its beauty and simplicity..
My favourite song of all time.thanks for uploading this.
4:00 is the real hook of this song. Love it.
Quite simply the most hypnotic and addictive baseline ever created.
@@dm5204 Yep. Those clean arpeggiated basses are all over Violator, such an underrated part of that album's sound. It's definitely the same modular tone at least on the chorus of Sweetest Perfection.
Sitting at work, so I couldn't put the sound on. Decided to let youtube subtitle it for me, this was what I got:
"… and you’ve mud you can make it happen so let’s move location we’ve gone from a glamour Malone a past phase one first of all Jesus it’s in maps I get mixed for a soccer ball get an amazing job we’ve done about three songs we’ve had big Russians scrapped loads of stuff…".
Now I'm sh***ing myself!
Thanks for the upload. Really, nice to listen to it.
Flood is fantastic
Was beautiful to have been present at this moment, thanks for relaying
A living legend. The best producer i know.
Please flood produce my music. I do "nearly" anything. lol
The goosebumps as soon as the guitar is added. ❤️
Flood is the best, he's worked with both of my beloved bands which are DM and U2 :) Was amazing to hear how Enjoy the Silence was created, thank you!
His production credits are really immense, and he seems to have a knack for working with a band at the exact right moment... when they are creating their seminal work. Besides DM/U2, Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, and Glasvegas spring instantly to mind.
@@condemned1982 Oh cool, didn't know he's also worked with those bands! Just recently I've discovered 'Deep dive 90s rock' playlist on Spotify, starting to like NIN and Smashing Pumpkins as well and will keep digging deeper into their music :D Good to know they've also worked with Flood. Btw, he's a lucky bastard, got to have worked with those amazing bands, I think I've made a wrong career choice xD
OMG DM and U2 are also my top 2
@@Lestrela Good to hear, fellow fan ^^ !
Don't forget Erasure. I think The Circus is brilliant. Seems to be an underrated album.
This is just so good
De estaba cocinando enjoy gracias a flood y a mi amor Alan por esa joya tan preciada y que nos regalaron bellísima 😍😍😍💋💋💋❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for this! ... but i wanted to hear it all :-(
***** sorry, my phone was dying! I'm sure you can find the whole speech somewhere.
Blank
I already tried... it always ends up at that point :P But thank you anyway!
Flood you are so funny and a great mixer
Ese ritmo Dios.. Y esa linea de Bajo.. Majestuoso por favor!!
Legendary moment
Gostaria muito que o Alan tivesse continuado na banda.
There's some guy on the crowd that laughs like martin 😂😂😂
Ha, guy is really funny. Interesting to listen to...
Without Alan Wilder DM Never Would Have Sounded As Great As They Did.
*this ain't no disco*
Heard that in the correct voice ty
I love how he's taking the piss outta Martin 🤣💥
Martin: we´re a synth band. He should remember that. You are no fucking blues band!
I'd love to know what guitar effects they used. To me it sounds like chorus+delay and a bit of reverb. Anyone?
There is an eight-note delay and a little reverb. There is a chorus effect too, but with a twist - back then they would do it manually, meaning there were actually 4 microphones on Martin's guitar in different positions in front of the amp. So there's actually 4 recordings of the same guitar part which were then glued together to make a "chorus" effect.
@@andevode Wow, incredible, how do you know all this stuff?

@-->-->--- DM FOREVER
Best producer imo. DM, New Order, Nitzer Ebb, NIN. And many others. The SOFAD album was too much for him. So he didn't work with DM again until 2013.
What was 'too much'?
Or DM just wanted to try new things 🙂
And he only mixed for them
Loads of noises arround....cant really hear anything....
what was the song they copied?
"but then..."
But then... but then what!?!??!
Then what... WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
💥💥🏌🏽♂️
was FLOOD touched by the hand of New Order's bass sequencer....? LOE HIS comments eon MARTIN L GORE's work.... wow.... this was insightful. Of course Martin had no part in the ripping of New Order's 1987 hit (yes #1 dance ....in the usa LOL bc of the coattails of blue monday 88 club hit) .....words fail me. I like DM a lot lot especially Martin Gore, he's my fav member, guess Alan was a fan of NO and Martin more JD as admitted in 1984 interview, but FLOOD talks like he CREATED this originally, its one thing to reflect influence, but another to blatantly rip, well what can I say, Moroder and Syvelster probably think this of New Order, hahah. entertaining video, almost. I think Flood should talk about the making of MOVEMENT, as he was engineer and why he chose the vocal mic he did.... hmm
Shaina Karasik can you translate please
Delete your dealer number please.
its pretty obvious what shes saying - Flood ripped of new order for DM. I know what she means "toiuched by the hand of god AND True Faith" which both pre-date vioolator by 3 years are very, very similar to the bass line flood used in enjoy the silence. dont be men to someone just because their english isnt perfect!
I remember Peter Hook was interviewed on KROQ around ETS was released. The dj asked him about dm and Peter said ETS ripped off new order. The dj was excited and thought he was going to get Peter to rag on dm, but he ended the conversation by shrugging it off and said it was OK because new order had ripped off dm too.
please, translate this....I from Argentina!!
he says the malvinas are british

alguien que traduzca, soy de Boca
Paletos!! Aprender de una puta vez inglés, que es el idioma con más circulación en todo el mundo.
how are you so sure that wilder did it? maybe it was dave's notes and the band decided to make it on synth? why so sure
plus he forgot to add the choir at the beginning of the song.plus god bless alan's soul
On the documentary included with Violator's 2006 remaster release, Alan said he suggested it should be an up-tempo dance track. And Flood said that he and Alan worked together to create the bulk of the music. And the choir chords seem to be lost from the session stems.
Because Flood was there in the studio with them and Dave, Martin has also confirmed this in interviews
Because the soul of DM’s sound was Alan Wilder, it’s a fact.
Martin has always favored slow ballads... Much of what DM is putting out now is slow .. Never again will we hear a Enjoy the Silence.. Black Celebration, Rush without Alan
Individuals make musik
I figured out the "Disco Classic" They used for the background beat. It's actually not to difficult to figure out, as it's probably considered THE Disco Classic of the late 70s.
McSpacerson can you please tell me the disco songs name??
There's so many there's stayin alive,I will survive,I mean the list goes on and on.
Sooo what is it?
its stayin alive
This video is perfect - except the laughing stocks which are a pity. 😢
There’s a guy LMFAO’ing for every little joke
