  • KEEPING YOUR COOKWARE CLEANER WHILE COOKING.
    Bacon and eggs can also be cooked on the hot coals of a camp fire, using grease proof paper with (No Cookware) for ultimate lightweight pan free cooking.
    I will now make the change to stainless steel mess tins, which will eliminate or lessen the scorching that aluminium can produce.
    (WARNING) Some science now show that continuous use of aluminium could have potential to bring on the on set of Alzheimer's & Dementia -

    I wouldn’t of ever guessed you can cook on top of greaseproof paper like that, that’s awesome. Great tips again Mr Bex

    Hi there from Switzerland ..
    My '70's Aluminium Mess Tins are still in regular use. Age, experience and a dearth of enthusiasm for post meal clean-up elbow greasing has me now avoiding stand-alone egg and bacon fry-ups therein. Now its Oats (my favourite go-to breakfast), soups, stews, 'hashes' and such. Egg and bacon mixed into a cooked up onion and tomato slurry works also. The secret is to keep the heat down low and regular stirring (acceptable elbow greasing 😏).

      Try this. Oats and milk into foil lined sealable bag and mix. Seal the bag and place it in your aluminium pot and cover the sealable bag with water. Bring water to the boil, and then simmer for a few minutes.....Eat from the bag....Zero clean up.....atb bex

      Hour and and half, with quarter of a scouring pad, till fingers are red raw as I recall...lol...bex

      By never frying your bacon burger/bacon grill even though it would have been more delicious...instead we just put all tins in water, then used the water for rolled oats/apple flakes/brew/washing & shaving

    That's a great video. Great tip with the washing powder (never thought of that).I'm slowly adding to my camping gear and using as much army surplus as I can (the stuff is built to last). Enjoy watching all your videos and can't wait for the next one. Great work 😎👍

    I used the aluminium tins in the 1960s and scoured them after each use using a clump of grass with roots and soil still attached. Would've sold my granny for a Brillo or Scotch pad :-)

      Try scrubbing with crumpled up tin/aluminium foil. A small folded sheet in the canteen takes up no space and has a multitude of uses. Just cleaned my stainless steel pot at home this way, water free....bex

    That's a good idea. Make this eternal clean. The Dutch Army is made of stainless steel. But is also heavier

    Yes! In use since militairy service..1977.... In private use with optimus 8r, later with msr whisperlite... People nowadays use msr reactor or something like it...but they only heat water..and then pour it in a plastic bag... No serious cooking anyway... But your style is mine! Thanks for the vid!

    My mms 1945 was given to me by my grandad in about 1964. He'd got it at the end of the war I suppose and looked brand spanking new. I've used it a lot, it's clean, but very pitted/corroded. I wouldn't use it now.
    Never. Cook. Me. Fried. Eggs. Please! 😂😂😂🍳🍳🍳🍳
    Boil up some rhubarb in it, that'll clean the tin.

      I believe the pre WW2 mess tins were stainless steel, that would be a rare find I think. Its best to prevent grease scorching rather than having to clean it later, If i use grease proof paper, there isn't really much scorching to clean. I use a ceramic skillet off cam for tent camping...       Its a sign to hit the reset button and water fast for a day or so....
      Haven't had my plague jab yet, so am self isolating, good chance to rest my back pain. Hoping to hike the Snowdonia Range here in Wales, when lock down is lifted in a couple of years or so.....😉

    after 20 layers of cooked on patina the food starts to develop a very special taste, lol
    i recently switched my mess tins to the dutch stainless steel version,
    slightly heavier but far more robust,

      Its coffee pots you never clean.....lol
      I have been humming and harring over the Dutch SS mess tin for a while. Aluminium great for boil in the bag rations as per their actual intent. But SS I think better for open cooking. Any feed back so for with the Dutch SS, regarding using it to fry a brekki etc...all the best bex

      @@bexbugoutsurvivor ... for liquids or wet food, i think the british aluminum sets are fine, but for frying the stainless steel ones are probably better. Over Heating a dry mess tin or letting it burn raises the evil aluminum contaminating the food issue .... in truth its a very low risk that needs specific circumstances to happen ... same as teflon being toxic. BUT i have peace of mind and know i wont damage/deform my mess kit with the stainless ones ... sometimes with repeated use the aluminum ones seem to go a little 'soft' .... think my SS set was £14 on ebay

    What kind of soap did you use to soak the tin in at the end? Was it dish soap or laundry soap?

      Seasoning best suited for cast iron.

      I use the Dutch army stainless steel mess tins. The smaller one i only use for boiling water. The larger one i use for cooking, and yes i have seasoned it. It's best done outside and may take a while, but it can be done. I made a lid from a mess tin bought from Poundland. I drilled a few holes i one corner so i have a lid and a way of draining water from noodles pasta e.t.c.

    Great video! 're aluminium not too many use raw metal grey,mostly hard black anodized which doesn't have the health issues.

      Many still use military surplus ali mess tins. The focus of the video was the grease proof paper preventing scorching of the pan. My bad... should have made it clear in the Title & Thumb nail....
