I find it fascinating that one can "accidentally" buy a Leica camera of any kind. I wish I were accident-prone like you, Matt! Cheers!
Haha thanks Chris, I didn’t wake up planning to buy a camera but when I saw the price I had to! Bread and water for 2024 but it’s worth it!
Yeah, it's not as if he has a spouse and has to go around saying,”Sorry, dear, I meant to buy a packet of crisps but clicked the wrong button and didn't realize it until it was too late…”
@@jlwilliams 😂😂 yes the joys of being single!
I always loved the Leica M10R. I like the idea of more resolution without going too much higher to the 61mp sensor of the M11, so I think the 40mp sensor of the M10R is just perfect 😍
Yes a black paint M10R would be very nice but for now this fits within budget (kind of!)(My M240 lasted me 8yrs which is impressive!)
M10-R BP is a solid investment and a great camera!
Agree with both of you. The black one all day long for me, such a gorgeous and amazing camera.
Where would you get a M10/r?
@@stillben MPB or similar or Leica stores (used)
Wow! Thats so cool! Congrats to your M10 and merry Christmas Matt! Can't wait to see you more with a M camera again! Cheers!
Thanks Tobi! Yes I’m excited to relearn my M Jedi skills haha! Merry Christmas!
Congratulations Matt, looking forward to more videos with it 👍
Thanks Kev! Yes exciting times ahead for 2024. Can I get my ninja M camera skills back like I used to have! New videos coming soon!
Hi Matt, congrats to your new purchase! M10 that's mega! I love it, that the purchase came so spontaneously. That's already a good start for making a good story on your new journey with your M10. 40MP is perfect for any situations, I find. 60MP or more is going to be more challenging to process again, if your PC/ software is not the latest, you know what I mean. I personally don't go over 40mp for the next 5 years for sure. Just no need for most situations. Happy Christmas, Matt!
Thank you Fabian, very kind! Yes I'm like that sometimes. Spontaneous. It keeps things fresh! Just to note I got the basic M10 which is 24MP not the M10R which is the 40MP one. 24MP is still enough for me. 40MP will show too much detail in the models skin so more work to edit. Have a good one!
Enjoy your new camera Matt. I'm sure you'll make the best of it.
The thing I like more with your chanel, is that you are open minded concerning gear, especially lenses. You focus more on emotion than on so-called lens quality, unlike too many self-proclaimed experts on UA-cam or wealthy enthusiasts. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Marc and I appreciate your feedback. Yes I do like to try all brands of lenses on the Leica cameras.
I really get bored with those who look down on anything not from Wetzlar.
Well done Matt, I was eyeing up that exact M10 at Park Cameras. It was a great price. I hope it brings you fun on the streets. Have a good Christmas 🎄
Thanks Zeno, no way, you are the 3rd! person to comment saying you'd seen the camera (2 others nearly bought it, one had it in their basket!). Phew! Many thanks and yes new videos coming soon! Have a good one!
At least I know it's going to the best home.
Have a good Christmas, and enjoy your M10!
Thanks Rex! You too
Hey Matt, I also nearly bought that very same camera, with its distinctive wear marks. I didn't though as I bought my first digital M, a 240 from the same dealer only a few weeks ago and I'm still learning how to use it! Happy Christmas, Steve.
Thanks Steve, no way, you are the second viewer to nearly buy this camera (but kindly not)(thanks!). Yes the M240 a few weeks earlier might be a little soon for an upgrade haha. More M content coming soon so stay tuned and have a great Christmas!
You are going to have some wonderful experiences with the camera and your great lens collection. Having previously lived in the Valencian Community (specifically Orihuela Costa) for a couple of years, I know how much the light, warmth and textures can serve as an inspiration and gather that no one does colours quite like Leica. I've blown quite a lot of my own money on Canon 'L' lenses and found to my cost that really the only way to find whether equipment suits you as a photographer is to buy into it and generally obtain the very best you can afford. Often the resulting effects are difficult to describe, but you've clearly demonstated this with your lovely images. Many congratulations to you and well done on all counts!
Thank you Micheal! Yes I really enjoyed Valencia. I might be going again quite soon to teach so i'll be taking the M10 for sure!
Congrats and welcome to the M10 club!😄 I've had mine for 5 years now, and I like it so much, I'm not sure I'll ever sell it tbh. For me, it has that same magic the M9 had, that just makes me wanna use it all the time. And the high iso files look great!
Thanks Don! "Same magic as the M9!!" That sounds good to me! I can't wait to start testing!
The M9 has massive magic. My fav camera on a sunny day!
Yep! Still have mine :-) @@CrueLoaf
@@thedondeluxe6941 I sent mine back to Germany and got the sensor replaced (corrosion caused spots) and it’s still battling on!
Good to hear! I have one of the later M-E versions, and it has never needed sensor replacement. Fingers crossed it will stay that way🤞🏻@@CrueLoaf
I know what you mean, I never thought I would buy a M again and the suddenly I bought M10r AND I Love it! The colors are amazing, the resolution is a nice bonus! I will keep my SL2 though but just added a M10m today 😂😂😂
Great stuff Steve!! I'm glad it's not just me. A black M10R would be lovely but this will keep me out of trouble for now! :) Congrats on your M10M!
I am a professional psychiatrist.* The fact that you kept mentioning the M11 (instead of the actual M10) is a freudian desire and you feel you should have bought the M11. Rectify this immediately - go online and buy one NOW!
*complete lie obviously -and congrats on the pickup - its a pretty good camera by all accounts.......
Haha I did think that too!! I blame my small brain! Dyslexic! Many thanks!
Yeah the Video about the M10 is out, yesterday we talked about. Nice Choice and the M10 looks good used. You will love it📷👏🍀
I wish you and your family wonderfull Christmas. Nice greets from Salzburg (Austria)🎄🎄❄️☃️
Thank you! Yes it only arrive today so I spend the day making a video. Very excited to start testing now!
Enjoy!!! Great camera.
Thanks Paul!
Merry Christmas Matt! Based on your review and an almost empty glass of wine (quickly refilled), I ordered a TTArtisan 50/1.1 the other day and had been shopping for a M10. I am looking forward to your comments about a proper magnifier for the Leica M10. I wish you, your fabulous models and the chase for beautiful light a wonderful New Year!
Hi Nolan, oh no, sorry to make your spend your money! (Both purchases should be a safe bet. More videos to confirm coming soon!). Merry Christmas too!
Congrats Matt on your "new" camera! I too got a "new" camera a couple of weeks ago. Decided to do film again after all these years. At first thought of getting an R camera since I now have quite a set of lenses but instead decided on a Mamiya C330 along with the 105mm f3.5 lens. Got back my first roll of CineStill 50 and was pretty pleased with the results...except these was this faint coloration in the middle of each frame. This is my first time shooting a TLR and have enjoyed the experience.
Thank you and congrats for getting back into film! Great stuff. Yes TLR cameras are a lot of fun so good choice!
It's wonderful that you made yourself a gift in the M10. As you are a pro I hope you can pull a lot of pound note through that lens. You did great, Have a great Cghristmas.
Thanks Sandy, It will be nice to try to get back into the M system again. Beautiful camera!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom You are a bad influence. I have no more use for another 50 than a hog does for roller skates, but I got the 7Artisans 1.1, US$312.55 delivered. I couldn't pass up that deal.
Keep up the street shots. You have a great eye for "the scene."
@@zoltankaparthy9095 ha thanks Sandy! Sorry about that! Congrats all the same and I hope your copy is as good as mine.
Congratulations on your new M10, Matt. I’m likely to do the same by next March. I’m planning on and looking for an M10-P but who knows what the Gods of previously owned Leica bodies will put before me between now and then. Enjoy your camera and Merry Christmas! 😊
Thank you James, yes I liked the idea of the beautiful P bodies too but this one was too good to miss. Merry Christmas!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Well it took me until Father's Day here in Switzerland but I've pulled the trigger and now I have a new (to me) M10-P in my hands and I love it! Just saw your video on Akara Labs' 6-bit encoder and ordered that to deal with setting up all of my vintage Leica lenses (and a couple of affordably priced "artisans") for the new camera. 🤩
@@JamesBoyer-plus congrats!
Just bought an M10, too. So far, I love it!
Ah amazing! Congrats. Great to hear and yes I can't wait to get started with mine. (It only arrived this morning and I spent the rest of the day making the video lol!)
That's great mate.. I'm sure you'll like it ..
Thanks! Loving so far!
Great find… I hope you use it well! Yes, any info you have on combo magnifiers/diopters for M cameras would be much appreciated! Happy holidays!!!
Thank you! Yes I've never seen a Leica M10 so cheap so I "had to"! Yes diopter video to come in Jan24.
Great find. I recently got an M Typ 240 (first Leica!) for almost the same discount off the normal price as you did with this M10, because mine has similar leatherette damage. A couple hundred dollars at the Leica HQ and it'll look good as new. In the meantime I just have a Leica Camera Protector on it and it does a great job keeping everything safe. Looking forward to seeing your comparisons in the experience of using the 240 and the M10. A good, used Leica M10 is the dream for me, right now.
Thanks Ian and great to hear! Yes I didn't expect to get an M10 any time soon due to the price but when I found this one I saw it as my opportunity! I'm glad you did the same with your M240. The M240 has worked well for me for 8yrs (and still looks almost new) so I'm excited to test vs the M10. Maybe you don't need the M10 (some even like the older M240 files!). Stay tuned and I'll share my results.
Congratulations on the M10. I’ve been in the market for a used M10P for a while now to move on from my M9. Will jump sooner or later.
Thanks! Originally I had my heart on the P version but ended up getting the 10 as better value. The P does look lovely!
I sold my M10 to MPB. Only because I have a M10 Reporter and a M10-D.
Great cameras!
Woo M10-P Reporter AND D .. very nice! I'll still like the P if I find a great deal. More M videos coming soon!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I think the P had a little softer release but not many other differences. Keep up the M vids. 👍
Nice video Matt, I’m so happy for you that you found one at a good price. I’m really eager to know your impression on how the M10 and the M240 compare especially the way they meter. Personally I find the M10 underexposing way more than the M240 under the same conditions, especially when there is a source of light in the frame.
Anyway enjoy it a lot, and keep us updated about your journey, cheers mate !
Thank you!! Yes I am very keen to see how the 2 cameras compare too. (Many say they are quite similar so we shall see). For the price I think it was a good investment and the black model is a welcome addition to my kit! Lots of new video coming soon for 2024!
Good luck!
Thank you!
Matt congratulations to your new camera leica m10, finally you got to upgrade your M series camera, I thought it will be leica m11, but still you upgrade and I'm excited to see that Leica m10 to your portraits shoot youtube videos the photos and lens combinations you like and recommended.. Merry Christmas 📸👍
Thank you! Yes the M11 is a little (a lot) out of my budget range but I felt really lucky to find this more affordable M10. Lots of M videos coming soon! Merry Christmas!
I also just bought an M10 variant because of a price I couldn’t ignore. Curse the fact that these cameras hold their value so well and making it easier to justify their purchase at good prices. I’ll be eating frugal for a long while but maybe it’s a good excuse to go on a diet and cycle more to places
Congrats! You’ll be living like me soon! Cheap but healthy :)
you're gonna love it. Feels like a fully mature camera compared to the beta feel of the M240.
Thanks! Yes nice camera for sure
I still own my m240p , but a couple of years ago I splashed out on a pre-owned m10-d which i got for a good price ,i still use the m240 now and then ,but much prefer the m10-d , enjoy you m10 , it'll be worth it im sure
Thanks Mark, very kind. I plan to keep both to start with so I can test side by side and then we'll see after that. Great to hear you have the D!
Congratulations! Am looking forward to your review of the Light Lens Lab Camera 1.4x viewFinder magnifier / diopter.
Thanks! Yes it was perfect timing with the M10 purchase coming soon after. It looks very promising and yes I hope to do a video in January.
There is an ebay seller in South Korea offering replacement skins for various Leicas - they even offer a tool to remove the frame line lever from the M10 - not massively cheap but could make a great video for us to watch as you fit a replacement. (The hardest part might be choosing what to do as they have a multitude of colours and finishes available!)
Thanks! yes someone send me a link and mentioned the tool is needed. The artist in me would have red but as I want to keep the camera as long as possible it would likely be boring black. For now I will use as it as i'm rubbish at DIY!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I think watching you 'fix it' would be fun!
(I'd try contacting the seller and seeing if they are interested in a collaboration anyway?)
Congratulations on your "accident", Matt! I have kept up with updating my work cameras through out the year, so I have always been used to the latest sensor technologies before the Leica bug got me. Going from a Canon R5 to a M240 mid this year was a massive penalty; while I do not care about the lack of megapixels, the lack of dynamic range on the aged M240 is a huge disadvantage. But there is something about this Leica magic that I cannot steer away from its shortcoming, as my M is now my fun camera. I feel more connected with the system then I would with a contemporary camera, the form factor is superb for street, and vintage lenses are extraordinary for portrait. I do dream of updating to a black paint M10R at some point (as I do not see going from a M240 to M10 has enough advancement), maybe one day I too will have the same accident as yours!
Thanks! Yes ideally I would press buy on a black paint M10R but the bank would reject the transaction haha. Yes I love the idea of going back to the limitations of M cameras and working harder for my images. There is something special about M cameras (any model*).
Good choice as I also just bought a black M10 yesterday… By the way: Your clips inspired me to buy Leica cameras starting with a black Cl on purpose and a black M6 „accidentally“ while picking up a Voigtländer APO Lanthar f2 in a shop, as the M6 was in mint condition and priced way under the average market prices here in Germany… Then I shot a couple of images with two different M240ies but ended up with the black M10. Unfortunately it has not been arriving before Christmas 😢
Great news and sorry you will not get before Christmas. I only bought mine yesterday so I expected it next week but to my surprise it came this morning. I've not taken any real photos yet as I was making the video! (Love your M6 story, great find. Sometimes you just have to buy if you find a great deal I think!). More M10 content coming soon!
I also ‘accidentally’ bought an M10 this year - my first Leica. I then had to sell all my Nikon mirrorless gear to cover my purchase. Very pleased though!
Ha nice! Sounds like a good move to me (based on being an ex-Nikon guy too!)(I still have the film cameras).
☺️ Go Matt!!!
Ha thank you!
My first digital Leica was an M11, so I don't know much about the M10. However, I use the M11 the same way as I use the 50-year old M4. You won't have any problems using the new camera..
..Avery
Thanks Avery! M11 as a first, very cool! Yes the M10 is similar. Like the M11, it gives the ultimate digital analogue experience.
I think the base M10 is still solid. I'd recommend a Thumbs Up or Thumbie (the latter doesn't block the shoe) and an easy access battery case with the bottom plate removed. Also set exposure comp back at least 1/3rd of a stop to account for blown highlights.
Thanks! Yes I have considered the Thumbs grips (of sorts, I used to use on my M9 pre 2015). I will likely shoot mostly full manual but I set the camera to -2/3 just in case.
Maybe 2024 will be your year for a "One Camera, One Lens" challenge! ;-) Cheers for a Prosperous New Year Matt!
Haha I might be able to do it for 1 short trip, maybe then it will be time to test the next lens for YT! :)
Oehhh! Thats a great new toy/tool! Maybe in 10 years for me😂. Enjoy getting more back to the RF joy!
Thank you! I waited 8yrs so I am close to you, just a little ahead! I will share lots of videos so you know if it is worth saving for! :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hahaha yeah well, I think if someone deserves it, it is you Matt! You will get the best out of the M10 for sure🙌 I look forward to your work with this beauty. For me, if there is gonna be a replacement for my old M8 it will be a M Monochrome. Thats my dream for now. And a hard enough financial challenge for me😂.
But I say, enjoy what you got. And I really like the old Kodak CCD sensor M8. So no complaints 🤗
Why? Because I have the money. :)
Congratulation to Mr Leica upgrading to M10 !
Thank you! New M videos coming soon!
I think I found a decent price on an M10 nearby at 3.6k USD, but there is a small chip in the corner of the lcd and I'm not sure if that should prevent me from my first M camera.
If it works as normal I think I would consider it. I was debating whether to get this for the same reason (should I not get a cleaner copy after waiting 8yrs to upgrade), but eventually I thought, I buy cameras to use and to the most part it looks great so I went for it.
Look forward to your comparative testing of the M10 versus the M240
Thanks Wilfed!
Happy new year Matt! Now you are getting a little easy here: you confuse us by calling an M10 and M11 (several times) and the "Why I Just Bought a Leica M10" and the announced :"Why It May Not Work For Me" do not seem to be as thoroughly addressed as you have used us to.
So if I may, I'll add my two grains of salt here:
-why an M10 (or even better an M10-P):
1- first full-frame Leica with the same size as the film Ms (M6 for instance). M240 was fine but felt thick and bulky to me (I am still keeping mine for its unique color rendition straight out of the box due to its unique sensor and software-what do you think?).
2-several real improvements over the M240 (far better behaviour in high ISO), shutter (even quieter with M10-P)
3-better EVF (helps with focusing under 0.7 m, focusing precisely at f 1.4 (or f 1.1 for that matter, and GPS integrated)
4-not having to deal with 60 Mp files (and price) of the M11 (40 as with the M10-R or 24 with the M10 and M10-P are plenty, just makes one work on framing discipline and forget about cropping).
All the best to you Matt,
Thanks Bruno! Yes you are way ahead of me. This was just a quick teaser video the day the camera arrived. Full usual detailed videos to come! (Lots of ..I keep adding to my video list!)(various M topics)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom All the best Matt (remember we believe in you ;o).
:-) I knew it, it was coming ...... I am very happy with my M10M ^^
Thanks Eric! I'm excited to get back into ..dare I say.."proper Leica photography" again! (I will share the journey anyway!). Enjoy your M10M!
Thinking about an M2 that’s advertised with “light haze” in the viewfinder. Is this an issue with older cameras or not a concern if everything else is good? Thanks.
Hi Gary, hmm, I was say exterior damage is fine for me but not inside. Any defect that means you can't accurately use the camera is a no for me. RF must be clear and bright. (it will still work and you can likely get it cleaned but I would look for a cleaner copy in this instance).
Sadly, so many pieces of gear that have sat in a drawer for years look great but suffer from poor storage and lack of use. Much better gear that’s been used but not abused. Thanks.
Congratulation for the M10; I also bought one and I love this camera! "Klick"
Nice find! I always want a same m10 in black.but how much did it cost approximately?
Thanks, yes very lucky timing.. the one day I look! It was too cheap not to buy, similar to the top priced mint M240s
Congrats on a good deal! Not much downside to test it out it seems. Do you still own & use the m8 by the way?
Thanks Jacob! No I part-ex'd my M9 then a few years later sold the M8 once I had the SL I think. I had more cameras than excuses. Now I have the M240 (which I may sell once I test verses the M10), SL, CL and Q (which I don't use so much)
Do you know which focal lengths William Eggleston used? Most of his pictures look like he used 21mm but I’m unsure.
Yes I think 21mm but try Google search to be 100%
Pleased for you Matt. Great camera, no need for the R. I just bought an M11M and, yes, a new body renews one's enthusiasm. I felt very privileged walking the streets of Paris with two monochrome bodies and some fab Leica glass. At Paris photo I ran into Joel Meyrowitz. I invited you to Paris but you never saw the message. Merry Xmas.
Hi Adam, many thanks. Sorry I missed your invite. One of my Patreons attended and then met me in Lanzarote direct from Paris. Hope you had a good trip and yes i'm looking forward to the M10. (Enjoy your M11M and have a good one!)
Exactly the position which I find myself in. All M cameras until I discovered the CL ...from that I bought an SL2s but no native lenses (I use the CL lenses and a sigma 70 /200 ) Recently bought a 246 so liking the M line again. The CL is a back up with whatever FL isn`t on either the SL2s or the 246. EVF`s are seductive but the feel of an M is special.
Ah great, yes pretty similar. I spent my first full day with the 10 today so I’ll try to make a video to share my thoughts and new ‘M style’ photos!
Did having an EVF make focusing easier? I always assumed that the rangefinder patches were faster to focus. While I can punch in on EVFs to check for critical focus, I find I spend too much time double checking if my focus is exactly right especially if me or the subject is moving slightly front/back. I'm thinking of picking up an M6 or M240 to simplify the process a bit more, and so that I can enjoy a more organic process. The M10D is the ultimate dream body, but with only 2000 units... I probably won't ever see one in real life.
Easier? No, Faster? No. ..BUT if the lens or camera is not calibrated the EVF gives you the option to accurately focus. That's what pushed me to the EVF originally. My RF was knocked out (again) and I wasn't fixing it myself back then. Now I adjust my M240 myself (see my M3 calibration video) and now I can nail focus at f1.1 very easily and fast (**On a lens that matched my body, like the 7Artisans 50 1.1 video). I like the idea of a simple process too!
Pretty awesome collection of kit right there 😀 I forgot if you had the LLL magnifier before? It's good one right 👍
Thanks Thomas (I only showed a few film Ms but yes ha!) I only just got the LLL finder (before the camera so it was lucky timing).
Sold my M10 for an M9-P and it’s been great but I do miss the quality of life improvements form the m10. Enjoy!
Yes it's a tough one! M9 cameras are special no doubt but my brain said get a more modern M10 which is more suited for client work/ professional needs. Both give their own benefits so no right or wrong.
Be careful with the TTArtisan 1.1 set to infinity, the optical unit is in contact with the SL2-S sensor! The distance between lens and sensor is 27.8mm for the Leica M and 20mm for the SL. Merry Christmas.
Thanks! Noted. I tend to shoot at 0.7m but great info for others. Have a good one!
Now we know why you were so pleased with the price, you thought you'd bought an M11! Looks lovely, congrats.
Haha yes sorry for the "M11..s" in this video, my mind must have been elsewhere! Yes i'm excited to get started!
How does the screen on it he m10 compare to the m240? Is it more on parr with the SL?
Comparison video to come vs SL and M240.. I'm not checked side by side but it will be far better than the M240!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I'm considering upgrading my m240 to the M10 but the live view quality would be the deciding factor for me. I use it occasionally on the m240 but the viewing angles quite bad once the screens not directly Infront of me. Hoping the M10 has improved viewing angles for low/higher shots.
Hello Matt, maybe you could give me an advice regarding "buying a M9": I got an offer to buy a Leica M9. It has only 63 releases (the owner did not use it, he got ill after buying it.). The camera body is in a perfect condition. The camera has the original CCD sensor. No signs of rust so far. The camera did not take part in the sensor change program. Price is 2,700 EUR. What do you think - it is worth the buy it? (I have concerns regarding the rust issue). Kind regards Maximilian
It sounds great but yes it might be safer to find one with a replaced sensor. (You can get sensors replaced worst case*)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for your feedback. That is a very good guidance. Best regards. Maximilian (P.S. Happy New Year and all the best for 2024!)
Congradulations on your M10! (but you really want an M11 ;-?). If you are coming from M-series film cameras, the thinner/smaller size (than the previous digital cameras (M9, 240…) will make you feel right at ‘home.’ The Leica SL although larger is still ‘the best deal in used Leica digital’ (cost/value/lens-adaptabilty/features), and why I picked one up over an M10. No, the SL is not a RF and using one doesn’t have that type of photographic experience, but the file quality is M10-like, and is more modern with useful features (weather-sealing!, 2-SD, that still gorgious EVF…). If you can afford both, that’s great, mix it up and enjoy both cameras for their unique experience. I’d love an M10 or M10-R, but with the SL and a monochrom (a couple older Leica film cameras, and my ideal Rollieflex), I’m probably not going to make any accidental purchases ;-)
Thank you Hektor! Yes absolutely. The SL is a no brainer for Leica for me to recommend. (M cameras always seemed overpriced in comparison when I know I can get similar photos from both.. and in honestly, likely better photos from the SL as I can do more things with it BUT this M10 was discounted so much I wanted to try to have it "less easy" and try to get back to a more analogue style of shooting via the RF)(like I used to). Will it work for me, we shall see but it will be a fun journey! ..and yes I think I was thinking of the M11 too haha.
Hello. Had a Leica M10 for 3 years. Great camera, nice colors, simple and beautiful, but not so affordable. Let me down in freezing weather several times, I had to sent in house for maintenance two times. At the end, I choose to sell. AD
Thanks Alfredo, Yes they do look very pretty! I don't plan to use in extreme cold and I expect to have to fix the calibration (like on my M240) so hopefully no extra surprises!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hi Matt. For sure you will shoot great pics with this camera, looking forward to see them!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yes, after a month of wondering what was going on I sent mine to Cameraworks-uk who fixed mine double quick about this time last year.
Really great service from them.
I cannot say that I “accidentally” bought my M10, but, injuring my left shoulder, during (or about) September 2017, did cause a postponement in buying a grail-quest super-telephoto Nikon lens, for photographing birds/wildlife, when I finally had the financial means to do so, in early 2018. This postponement allowed my attention to be captured by a pre-owned Summilux-M 50mm ASPH lens, which I tried on pre-owned and demonstrator M9 and M Type 240 cameras. I decided to buy the Summilux, before I knew which camera body I would acquire, upon which to use it. Only then did I learn that the Leica dealer had only just fulfilled their waiting list for M10 cameras, so, two were then available, in April 2018.
So, an accident contributed to my later adding the Leica M system, and it was a happy coincidence that an M10 had just become available, at that point in time. Notably, the pre-owned Summilux and the new M10, combined, cost less than either of the Nikon “super-telephoto” lenses under consideration. (600mm f/4 or 400mm f/2.8) My shoulder finally rehabilitated, successfully, and I never bought either of those telephoto lenses. No regrets; I was “saved” from acquiring heavy monsters. Our nature photography shifted to plants, fungi, insects, and other wee beasties.
Great story, thanks for sharing!
Hang on, Matt. I remember you said you switched to the SL not just for the EVF, but also because you were tired of sending in the M for viewfinder calibration every year or so. Also, the Ms are more sensitive to moisture than the SL.
Yes agreed, I have gone full circle. (It might not work out but I want to give Ms another go). It came after nailing almost every photo with my M240 and 50mm f1.1 in the last video. It restored my faith in the system (after I recalibrated the M240 myself). I LOVE the SL EVF but I like shooting film cameras and digital Ms without EVF are the next closest thing. (..and they are smaller vs SL).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Yes, for sure. The Ms are much more fun, and if you use them a lot, you learn to focus fast. And a digital M with a small lens fits in the pocket, unlike the giant SL.
Are you parting with the m240 😢?
Not yet. I want to test both cameras side by side first. No rush to sell.
Congratulations…I think if their “photo journey” is long enough, EVERYONE eventually comes to the realization that “easier” isn't always “better” and that it's possible to make things TOO easy! Also, Leica fans never want to admit it, but based on results I've seen, I think ALL the older digital Ms were toward the back of the pack vs. competitors in terms of sensor performance… the M10 was where they finally caught up, so you should be much happier there. Meanwhile, we all noticed how many times you said “M11” instead of “M10”… clearly that was your subconscious talking, so keep an eye out for a tatty M11 that some yacht-club tiff has traded in for a new M11P!
Thanks James, absolutely, yes a combination of less easy and more "true Leica", dare I say it, is appealing. It's a good excuse to relate to all the M users too for future videos. (Yes haha regarding the M11, I will have to keep one eye open!)
I went from an sl2s to an M10, no regrets!
Fantastic! Hopefully I can follow your footsteps! (I'll share my M10 journey as I go!)
Blooming brilliant. Happy Christmas. I wish I had an extra £4k quid to accidentally buy an M10. Hehe. Or used £2k
Yes used you can find deals (especially if you trade in an existing camera). Cheers!
I think I hold on to my M240. As far digital cameras go, it provides the closest experience to using my Leica M film cameras, but in a digital guise. It is a little noisy above iso 2500, but I like that for when I set it to B&W. It is very film like reproduction.
Yes the M240 offers a great middle ground. I’m keen to do some side by side testing to see if any differences so stay tuned!
Sounds like copium 🥲
I love it Matt, you were so excited you forgot which camera you were talking about. An embarrassment of riches! LOL!
Haha I know, sorry. My little brain was overloaded and malfunctioned. I can't afford the M11 so I was pretending I had bought one I think!
Great move Matt
Thank you! Better late than never!
Leica M10 used is a great choice especialy for such a price.
The 24 MP is enough and excellent for vintage lenses.
I hope you show some good portrait shot taken with this lens, and it is not about the boobs but about the real beauty.
Thanks for sharing and good luck with your new camera
Thanks Rob! Yes i'm excited to see what I can do (I just booked a cheap trip so I can test it asap)
Is all the leather going to come off
If you see my newer videos I now have a cover/grip over it to make it look tidier. No the whole lot would not come off but you can re-skin cameras if needed.
Wow. How interesting. I’ve been an M9Monochrom user for nearly a decade and just recently and accidentally bought an M10Monochrom. Sorta in the same boat. 😂
Ah great stuff! Congrats! I will share my M10 journey as I go and I'm sure you will be able to relate! Enjoy your M10M!
Matt : My Wide Rollei sounds better ....quieter 💪🏻 sorry ! 1961 Rollei's are awesome , but I will admit I love my KANTO rebuilt M3 , that is even better than the MA Leica , but they are both not as silent / smooth as my Rollei's . Another thing ...people come TO you , when using the TLR system and are not alarmed or afraid. So for street , if you can work with a dedicated focal range or with one lens , then try a Rollei the negatives are lush and fine grained , they are magical. 6x6 is lovely.
Ha thanks Chris! Yes the M10-P is the quieter one. Luckily models don't care about click sounds!
I think you really wanted the M11 hearing you mis-mentioning a M10 so often! ;-)
Thanks Ronald, haha I know right! My mind must have wandered :) The M10 is working so far. See last night's new vid!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom The M10 is great. I bought one 1,5 year ago and am still extremely happy with it! Thx!
Enjoy! I never even look at fancy cameras, anymore! Pointless for me! My M3 new 1967, Nikons from 70's,Pentax all over the place! Bravo! It's your monies.
Yes the M3 is all you need! I still love mine. Many thanks
if the shutter and the sensor are good, then this will be much better for you than the M240. I would leave the leather like that.
Thanks Carlos, yes I'm excited to do some testing. So far so good!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
I shoot mine without any accessories. I like the feel of the shutter button. For the rangefinder I’m wondering if a Walter contrast lens for the viewfinder would be better than a magnifier.
@@carlosmcse thanks. My shutter button felt like my R cameras (Leica R). More travel required so needs a soft release. I’ve not noticed with my other cameras.
@@carlosmcse and it’s more my eyesight (I should wear glasses!) so diopters help
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom oh so try Walter Leica. It says “Dioptre lenses can be ordered in the following increments: plus/minus 0,25; 0,5; 0,75; 1,00; 1,25 ; 1,50; 1,75 upwards.”
Did you find that your M10 has better rangefinder calibration than your M240?
I checked and it is accurate. Recently I recalibrated my M240 so that is now also very accurate (see my M3 calibration video). That's what restored my faith in the M system (after the 50 1.1 video). (Same hit rate with M240 as SL at f1.1)
Good to hear! I read that the M10 had an improved rangefinder design, but I haven't heard too much from people about it.@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
Where on earth do you find all your Leica accessories? I think I’d have to go to NYC to find such a store (125 miles from me). 😂
Ha, I've been doing this for over a decade so I guess I collect them along the way. I buy mostly online and import if I need to (LLL for example).
Hey Mat sell both M10s and get it done ! Buy the M11 … you know you will sooner or later ?
Haha thanks John. I know I must want the M11, I said it by accident enough times haha. No the M10 will do me for now. Prices for the M11 is too much so I'll wait 5yrs or so haha (I waited 8yrs since the M240 purchase which I think is impressive.. but I did get the CL, SL and Q since then!).
Coongrats! (I shoot performance with a m240 with an evf. (i think rangefinder/mirrorless together is a nice combo when you can barely see what is in front of you, and you have to shoot fast) have been thinking about getting a m10 for better low light performance and the better evf available. a friend of mine has a m10; you will love the files.
Thanks Peter! Yes I’m keen to see how the files compare to the M240 (and SL).
Waiting for your comparison M10 vs M240 review
Thanks. Sorry for the delay on that
Can I suggest if you “M11” this much in your mind its already too late and you know what to do 😅
haha I know right! Not sure how that happened but yes maybe it's a sign haha. I'll start with the M10!
Bit confused, you keep saying my M11 when talking about your M10, is that a Freudian slip that you really want the M11? Do you have the M11 now??
Hi Adam, yes apologizes. My small brain must have been thinking about the M11 and sating the wrong words. No I stayed with the M10. M11 is too much for me.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComahh cheers Matt, my predicament is I’d like an M, I currently have a GFX for my work and want something different for fun, but also possibly for a backup - the M11 can be tethered and uses Profoto, has comparable specs to GFX, could be a backup at a push, but it’s so much more than an M10. I’m thinking M10 for a year or so and then once it’s paid off get M11. Your videos are really helpful 👍
😊
Thank you!
You mix M10 and M11 in part of the video ;-)
I know, a lot! Sorry for that! (I must be thinking of M11!)
Please do a Leica Q3 full review
See the Q3 vs M11 video or Q3 v Q2 v Q video
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thank you Matt. This is my fav photography channel. You remind me of the likes of William Eggleston.
Lol I almost bought that exact body from Park Cameras yesterday, it was a bargain! I bought a used Q2M from them instead!
Ah no way! Yes I rang up as soon as they opened yesterday when I accidentally saw the price. I couldn't believe it. Thanks for leaving it for me if you spotted it first haha and congrats on your very nice Q3M! Cheers!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I even put it in my basket but couldn't justify it along with the Q2M! Owned an M10 twice before but couldn't get along with the overexposed highlights and using faster lenses.
@@vikdaddy I should be fine for metering as I’ll manually expose and yes hopefully I can continue my recent high hit rate with fast glass. (I need to get my ninja skills back.. I used to shoot weddings with my M9 and a Nocti (wide open!)
M11 or M10? 6:18
Sorry Jens, M10 throughout!
Hilarious that you kept referring to the M10 as "M11"...!
Haha yes sorry about that!
M11 M11 M11
Ha sorry, my mind obviously wandered!
You kept saying M11 from the 5 minute mark, maybe that's what you need. It is closer to the M240. The M10 is more "stable" but it makes sense to upgrade to the M11 from the M240.
Ha thanks Bill, yes I thought that too although I can't afford the M11 so the M10 will be great for now!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom for sure!! I got into the Leica ecosystem early in digital like you. I had the M8 (used in 2014), then the M240 new in 2015, then a M246, M10 in 2017, and the OG SL typ 601, and OG Q. When I started to upgrade, I used the M10 to fund the M10-R (and a lens), the SL to fund the SL2-S, the M246 funded the M10-M and when I had extra I got a Q2M. The Q2M and M10-R funded my M11-P, and I've kept the M10-M because I had the "Leitz Wetzlar" edition that was the same price as the normal M10-M but has retained much of its value. My suggestion to folks, besides use whatever you have, has been to treat these cameras at a certain point as tradable/upgradable. You are only then spending the initial "holy shit" money and then each iteration is only an upgrade amount of money, comparable to any camera manufacturer. Now ask me if the M11-P was a GOOD upgrade and I will say... the M10R/M10M are the most stable bodies, the M11 is getting there but needs a few more firmware improvements. The M10/M10P is likely the MOST stable system camera you can get in Leica, outside of the SL you already own, the CL and the Q. So all in all, you are solid with your choice, just in the future - maybe consider the big upgrade, since you are a UA-cam channel dedicated to Leica, it would be worth the investment in the long run!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComGreat find Matt. The camera is in good hands.
You’ll probably eventually get an M11. It has better battery capacity, built in memory, USB data and charging, etc.
@@johnkasianowicz6536 thanks John!
@@BilBrown thank you! Solid advice. Yes it was the fact that I’m a Leica channel that gave me the excuse to upgrade as to be honest I’m happy with my current cameras but I need to stay current and topical I think. I can’t stretch to the M11 yet as YT doesn’t pay those prices. Agreed I would get a black M10R if I trade up. They just look so good!
You mostly call it “M11”. Is this a Freudian slip revealing what you really want? :)
I know! Sorry for that ..and yes I think you are correct ha!
Wow you must really want an M11, you said M11 quite a few times!
I know! I think deep down I'm pretending it's a black M11! (Sorry for the wrong names!)
Matt, you keep saying M11 to your M10.
Otherwise, the M10 is a great camera.
Yes so sorry, my little brain got confused I think. I'm not the brightest!
Think you got an M11 on the brain. 😅
Ha thanks Mark, yes sorry about that! The M10 is just fine but yes I must have been thinking newer!
ahahah accidentally ... what a joke ... You just anticipate your birthaday and you are right ... Good choice my friend ... enjoy it
Haha thanks Grom! It was after we all talked about cameras on the Zoom call and after my recent trip. I was planning on the SL2-S as a maybe or the M10-P but this was in my budget (unlike the others) so it seemed meant to be. I rang the store the minute it opened haha :)
lol dude the number of times you said M11 in that video. Tell me what you really want.
I know right lol, sorry about that!
