For youz who ain't Italian....There's a million 'different' verses to this song. I grew up in Chicagoland in the 60's 70's, and ALL the Italian side of my family who came over from Sicily on boats from the 1890's -19teens sang this song. ALL the verses were 'dirty' and the females would laugh and blush....Good times. LoL

I'm 71. My dad's people came over from Sicily and I remember him singing this.

Listen to this over and over. My favorite version of this song on youtube. Full italian unlike that english mixed with italian nonesense. Very well done and it has a certain feel that is very Italian about it, warm and inviting.

I object. "That English mixed with Italian nonsense" is a point of pride of most of us Italian Americans here in the US. My grandfather came over around 1910, and gradually all the brothers and sisters. I wasn't born till 1962 but I learned this and many other words and expressions, much of it frozen Napolitan from the turn of the century. I am as proud of it as every Spanglish speaking American of his language.

This is WONDERFUL! Thank you :) And what about the old guy in Godfather 1, when he uses his finger to push into (?) and everyone laughs?? And shortly before, his dentures come loose (did anyone notice that?)

It is better if song by a daughter. If song by a son few words need to be replaced with the male-female counterpart, at times difficult to believe: from fisherman to fisherwoman, from stonemason to she- stonemason, etc.

    Dear Pietro Cassinadri,
May I ask if it matters whether it's a daughter or a son looking to get married? I do find this version, which by the English translations seem to be a son. Heard it in The Godfather and found it to be very merry :)
    Best Regards,
    Felix

Typically, it is a daughter (female singer) imploring to get married, because she can't stand it anymore!

Smart question!!! IT Totally matters. This is a cultural /social warning from mother to daughter but perhaps to all of us women via the lyrics and oh so happy tune. The mother artfully explains via the symbols of the professions what happens in all too many marriages . The potential wife abuse and subservience by all the male profession sung about in this song: "Se ce piglia na fantasia>" Plus, the sexual emphasis - essentially all they want is sex the mother is implying (all the in and out comments), Apparently this is an old Sicilian folk song with a warning about the clear and present dangers of marriage. It may have been written in the past but it is still relevant. A social parable. A warning. As I write this, I am observing how it is mainly men who sing this song. Yes some women but mainly men. We women had little choice long ago. Teach your daughters well.

Completely destroying the meaning of the song....which can be summarized in one sentence...daughter, dear all men want is one thing....so don't be in a hurry to bE married...
