I just bought a '20 Forester Sport and before the test drive I was hesitant because of the engine and transmission. I was actually surprised that the power is actually quite adequate and the CVT isn't bad at all once you learn how it works the best. The ride is smooth, the seats are comfortable, the cargo capacity is excellent, the AWD system is top notch, and the safety features are very reassuring considering I have a 2 year old and another on the way, so safety is a top priority these days. As long as you're not expecting a combination of a Jeep Wrangler for offroading and an STI for raw power, you'll be happy with it.
How is the interior road noise? I’ve heard conflicting reports: one report says it is now on-par with the best in the class, and this review says it is still too loud. We are waiting for our local dealer to get one in stock to test drive and it is at the top of our new car list.
@@DavidRyanTaylor You're going to get some noise, mainly because of how much glass is around you. That said I don't notice it much and have my music or radio on 99% of the time. This is not going to be Benz or BMW quiet, just the nature of it.

Thanks for another great review Forrest! I commented on your review of the new Santa Fe and said I was cross shopping the Santa Fe and Rav4. Yes, they are not direct competitors, in size, but are in price. I also like the 2019 Forester. Though a big factor is that I'm not a fan of the CVT. I must say we leased a 2008 Forester, and a base model at that, and we really liked it! I know this must be light years ahead! People sure love to hate CVTs. We have a 2016 Outback 6, and I'm impressed that the trans always picks the right ratio, right away, almost never producing the dreaded CVT drone except under hard acceleration. I'm less enthusiastic about the CVT in my Honda CR-V 1.5 turbo but that may really be the engine's fault. Way too much drone from the drivetrain, and now potential troubles with gas in the oil.

I'm considering replacing my 2017 Impreza Sport wagon with a Forester Sport. I love the styling of the Sport and the 8.7 in of ground clearance really comes in handy during the severe winters we get here in northern Ohio. The low ground clearance of the Impreza is the main reason I'm looking to replace it. I totally agree that the Forester Sport is a solid value compared to the competition. Although, the price has increased significantly since 2019, thanks to inflation, limited supply and high demand. That said, Rav4 and Jeep pricing have increased as well, so the Forester's value is still there, comparatively.
Heavily considering, please note, 76.1 cubic feet is misleading and wrong. It is only ~76 w/o moonroof, which is standard and non-optional in all but the base model. Thus, only those interested in the base model will get that space. Otherwise it goes down to 70, which is a significant different, IMHO, still amazing, but different.
Having owned 2 SUbaru vehicles, I can verify that they are very reliable vehicles IF you keep up with your maintenance. Don't follow Subaru's oil change schedule (7500 miles). This is way too long for these engines. I always do oil changes at 5000 miles or less and my Subarus haven't had the issues others complain about.
Subaru now recommends oil change every 6k miles. My Forester 3yr old is doing just fine. I drive it hard & so far no complaints what so ever. If you like soft & cushy riding cars, you will like it too.
To all the people saying that the engine isn't up to snuff, can you make a recommendation on something that doesn't have a "boring" engine in the 20-30 k price range that still has AWD? I think the only way I'm going to do it is with last years model rav 4 or crv on clearance if I can even still find one?
Very nice video/review of the 2019 Forester Sport! One question please...Are you using the OEM tires for the off-roading, and if so, how would you rate them? Thanks again for the excellent video/review!

You couldn't do that move in the mud with a 2020 Outback without accessing X Drive through that horrid gigantic Infotainment screen, but you can diddle with a dashboard mounted i Pad while you drive, so there's that.
Old Subarus had some CVT problems, but nowadays those are Okey. Subaru have the best CVT in the market and this CVT is really great. Reviewers doesn't love CVT's still, because those are noisy when putting pedal to the metal. But otherwise in day to day normal use it Subarus CVT feels like a normal automatics.
I thought the RAV4 adventure was the car I wanted before I went test driving. I was disappointed. As much as I wanted to love the RAV4 it felt cheap. The better build quality (in my opinion), AWD system, and residual value won me over on the Subaru.
Anyone with experience with this car take it off-road, up the mountains ? Just wondering if it is adequate for these normal uses after 4 years and they are still happy with this purchase.
Yes, i heard from TFL car review if equipped you get 2 memory options and additional based on camera built in knows who is driving and auto sets up your seat for you.
Bought one of these at the end of October. Already got rid of it for a ‘19 Santa Fe. Had horrible vibration through floorboard and through the wheel. Balanced wheels, swapped tires and even swapped the prop shaft to no avail. Not sure if it was the suspension or what... also glad to be out of the CVT.
I also spent a month deciding between Forester and Rav4. When Consumer Reports rated Subaru as best car company in America and rated the Forester at a 89 ( only two vehicles beat its score, another Subaru and the Toyota Avalon ) I went with the Forester. Love it so far. Although the Rav4 was my second choice.
I’ll be glad when all automobile manufacturers STOP making their standard interior colors in Gloomy Grey or Boring Black from 1990. It looks very dated, dull and depressing.
SavagexRaccoon its a family car man - the wife isnt gonna wanna play around with a manual in traffic with our daughter in the back - you missed the whole point.
Passport specs came out today. All V6 and price is a lot higher. Also AWD is optional except the top model. Just replying because I was holding out to see what the Passport specs were but very disappointed.
....”they increase the size of the vehicule...” I think they should increase also the size of the motor, I drove it in a city that isnt at sea level and full of people and lugagge 👎🏻
I don't know why, but Subarus tend to be ugly. And they are still ugly today. They are starting to become likeable, but only certain parts of their cars I like. That's the case with this Forrester. I don't like the front so much, but I like the back more... I wouldn't spit on it if someone gave it to me. I would consider getting this if I was getting a new SUV.

You ain't gonna get a real quick merging speed to get on a freeway with the CVT, but if you like saving some money on MPG it's good. I averaged 23 MPG combined in my 2015 Subaru Forester. I drive pretty aggressive on mountain roads and freeways.
@@Fritz___ not with the new engines. The EJ series had that rumble. But the new FB engines sound almost like an inline 4 but maybe a little more aggressive.
If that rear wheel made your rear pucker, don't ever go serious off-roading in a Hummer that does not articulate at all. You'll pull the entire seat cover up the rear. And if that buckle is hard to understand, don't get any more technical. Your so-called off-road test is ludicrous. People can search the web and find actual, off-road examples. Unless you can get a awd hybrid id go with a forester. Rav 4 have features but arent gonna save you money or increase off road ability
Thank you for the info. You stated road noise, but was it better than the RAV4. I am leaning toward the Forester, almost 6-7K less than the Toyota.
Appreciate the review, but the weird camera shaking/focus going slightly in & out made me motion sick...

I’ll be glad when all automobile manufacturers STOP making their standard interior colors in Gloomy Grey or Boring Black from 1990. It looks very dated, dull and depressing.
Idk i think i would still take a crosstrek witha 6 speed manual over the forester that cvt a big nope
SavagexRaccoon its a family car man - the wife isnt gonna wanna play around with a manual in traffic with our daughter in the back - you missed the whole point.
Would the 2019 Honda Passport be a good contender too?
Passport specs came out today. All V6 and price is a lot higher. Also AWD is optional except the top model. Just replying because I was holding out to see what the Passport specs were but very disappointed.
It would be, but it's not in the same segment as the Forester.
How about the new Rav 4
@@dr007md Yes, the new RAV4 is very good. The Passport is more like an alternative to the Outback.
This or CX5 Grand touring?
I’ve always undone the center seatbelts like that...
....”they increase the size of the vehicule...” I think they should increase also the size of the motor, I drove it in a city that isnt at sea level and full of people and lugagge 👎🏻
Why say leather on the doors ,when we all know its plastic.Dont you know the difference ??.
Dillon Blair I actually think it's better than most. For me it's the CX-5, Forester and Rav 4 then maybe Escape.
@@Michael-ur5qb Yeah. SUVs are stepping up though! I really like the CX-5
Dillon Blair agree, front end tends toward ugly, but still like this vehicle
@@DiecastShowcase Maxda CX-5s are very ugly
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I like it just fine! :)
3:27 does it not have standard LED daytime running lights (around the headlight)?
@@forrestsautoreviewsofficial Are you sure? I saw some videos that did have it - maybe it's a button we have to press? ua-cam.com/video/epI8ebKrvXs/v-deo.html
Those only turn on when the vehicle is in drive. While parked it doesnt stay on.
Wats the name of the intro song ?
CVT....YIKES
Your not going to race or do massive engine mods with this. The CVT will work fine for 98% of the people who are going to get one.
Raymond Hachmishvili the CVT is fine. I have the 14' and I don't love it or hate it. The best vehicle in this class, the CR-V has a CVT. After driving it I actually preferred Subarus.
and ontop of this you cant compaire a trail hawk to this...ever. and if you dont under stand this go rent a trail hawk and really go off road..ya
Put a lift and larger tires and the Forester would perform just as good if not better while being better on road.
It is true that cvts are bad transmissions systems?
You ain't gonna get a real quick merging speed to get on a freeway with the CVT, but if you like saving some money on MPG it's good. I averaged 23 MPG combined in my 2015 Subaru Forester. I drive pretty aggressive on mountain roads and freeways.
Dimple looking plastic? Faux carbon fiber. My bro.
Don't tell us "I'm not gonna lie to you," again. Figure it out.
Can't disable start & stop permanently. Pass.
Some have commented that dealers can turn it off permenantly.
You can buy a $100 gadget online and disable this S/S feature permanently. I bought it and love it !
Everything is great but too slow and that's a deal breaker for me.
19 toyota rav4 limited awd please
RAV4 Stinks-ONLY 14 gallon Fuel tank !!
Weak and boring engine
julio dominguez But the Subie Rumble!!!
@@Fritz___ not with the new engines. The EJ series had that rumble. But the new FB engines sound almost like an inline 4 but maybe a little more aggressive.
@@Fritz___ No rumble since the new Subaru engines have equal length headers.
No turbo makes me sad.
Robert NES816 nothing to do with the engine and everything to do with the headers they put on them from factory
Not a great review of anything but the looks.
