  • One of the most challenging dementia behaviors is refusing bathing. What can a caregiver do when a loved one with dementia refuses to bathe, groom, or change into clean clothes. This video provides strategies to help gain cooperation from your loved one with dementia during bathing.

Welcome to Dementia Care Hub where I share weekly videos with tips and strategies that you can use right away to make caring for a loved one with dementia easier.
I’m Dr. Kristen Galloway, a licensed occupational therapist and Dementia Care Specialist. I own a private practice Florida where I help individuals with dementia remain independent and safe in their homes for as long as possible. I also provide caregiver training to make caregiving easier and less stressful for family caregivers.
I created Dementia Care Hub when I saw that there were so many family caregivers who were overwhelmed and struggling to find resources to make caregiving simpler. I hope you find my videos useful. Feel free to comment with suggestions for future video topics.
Thanks for all you do as caregivers! It takes a lot of love, compassion, strength, and effort to provide care for someone with dementia. Hats off to you!

This video has come at a good time . My husband is just starting to show this avoidance of taking a shower and I wasn’t sure how to handle this.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I’m so glad the video was helpful to you. It is not unusual to encounter these types of statements to avoid bathing. Try to get to the reason behind why your person doesn’t want to bathe…is it fear, a question of modesty, does he/she not want to get cold? There are myriad reasons but the key is to figure out which one you need to address to make bathing less scary or uncomfortable. Best of luck!!

Do you have any tips on dealing with a narcissist with dementia? My mom does not like to be told what to do by anyone. She refuses to bathe, change her depends or basically anything she is told to do. She refused to cooperate with the nurses when she was in the hospital and at the rehabilitation home. She also likes to hit, either with her hand or anything she can grab, bite and pull hair. I have had to force her to change her underwear, trying to remove them and protect myself from her. She would be even worse if I placed her in the nursing home. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it

That’s one of the phases she will go through it will pass, my mom did the same and I started bribing her with cake and ice cream and it helped. There is a lot of unusual stuff to expect with this terrible disease but they do all pass and remember it’s NOT her but the dementia.

While I can’t provide advice specific to your situation here, I can say that these types of behaviors are common in dementia. I have a few videos on how to communicate effectively that might be helpful. Generally speaking anything you can do to create routine and consistency in the daily schedule can the person feel calmer and more relaxed which can help in reducing unwanted behaviors. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Picture yourself confused, not understanding whats going on etc amd someone is trying to take yoir clothes off. Now imagine that person having been sexually assaulted and never told anyone. Dementia is complex, everyone is different but most do not like getting naked its a total loss of control when they have no control in their lives as it is.
