    A vote for you - It’s not “duchess” satin, it’s “duchesse”, it’s French! Tbh I don’t care how people pronounce it, we all know what we’re talking about and French pronunciation isn’t natural for a lot of English speakers - but you’re valid!
    I am with you in that I wouldn’t remake the skirt again, but I’m intrigued as to if you have plans for the silk that didn’t work out? Whenever I have a fabric not work right for a project I always feel a pressure to come up with something to do with it so it’s not “wasted”

    I think there is a misconception that successful UA-camrs are all insanely wealthy and cost is no issue. At my current level, this is a project I'd never have attempted simply due to the cost of the proper materials. I shall keep thrifting linens until I'm satisfied I have the basics finally fitting me right. In your case, you know your budget better than we do.

      It's a game of trial and hunting with where you live. My favorite one has a dedicated craft section. And even if they don't have that, look for bedsheets and table cloths. I work with a lot of those, you get a very large chunk for under $5. I just made a skirt that looks like wool out of blackout curtains, for example. Start looking at other things in different ways, it doesn't specifically have to be crafting fabric.

    And thank you for showing the whole process, including how you rip everything apart to start afresh. Your videos really are inspiring me to get back into sewing, and with a better mentality. I agree. It is good to see the seam ripping as part of the task instead of a polished "everything goes right first time every time" image which leaves me wondering why I can't.
      My husband has been encouraging my sewing (for nearly 39 years) and cheers me on with "unpicking is part of the job" and "Unpicking is how you take your garments from OK to the excellence that you are known for, good on you!"

      Here in Italy we pronounce it like Mariah did: also, I don't know if it's the same in English, but in Italian the name of that fabric is spelled "duchessE" with a final E, because it's intended to be French - hence the pronounce.

    I am so enjoying this video series on this EVER AFTER dress, one of my favorite movies and dresses.
    I'm 18 mins in and will go back to the video, just wanted to jump in and say before I forget that I appreciate so much the details you show us in the sewing but even a very important to me detail of the music background is, WOW, always spot on. I hope others are as appreciate of your choices!
    I get tired of the typical jazzy same old music soooo many videos use.
    This is a breath of fresh air and helps me concentrate on what you are doing and saying. And helps your videos, added with your appealing calm voice, to be what they are!
    Thank you!!!
    Now I'm jumping back in!

    • @neon-kitty

      Correct. From what I've seen, you can use either the English (duchess) or the French (duchesse) word to describe this fabric. But do note that they're spelled differently. So if you spell it as duchess, it makes sense to use the English pronunciation and if you use the French pronunciation, it makes sense to use the French spelling with the E at the end xD. (Not that it really matters :p.)

    Cut yourself some slack you are trying to make something you have only seen in pictures so be nice to yourself. Also I agree with you that it’s expensive fabric that would spend a long time in my it’s far too expensive to cut pile!! One of my dream projects has expensive fabric that I’m still trying to convince myself would be a good thing. The last dress that the stepmother wears before she and her evil daughter are demoted to laundry ladies. It's a beautiful dress and I noticed that it's made from the same pattern for the blue,grey and silverish dress the stepmother wears fort her introduction. • @theplussizecostumer

    The dress looks lovely. Looking forward to seeing the final reveal. As for the pronunciation of Duchess satin, I've always heard it as the same as the aristocratic rank, as in "the Duchess of Sussex". Plus I've heard several professional designers pronounce that way, too. And you aren't the only person I've heard mispronounce it. Another CosTuber I watch pronounces it "du- CHAISE". Often mispronunciations occur when a person has only read the particular word and not heard it pronounced. And there are a lot of fabrics that have names that are a bit tricky. Names like challis, voile, faille, to name but a few. (For the record they're pronounced shall-lee, not chalice, voile is like oil with a "V" not v-wall, and file not fail. I looked them up because I wasn't sure of the pronunciations either.)

    • @toolsoffantasy
      @toolsoffantasy Рік тому +2

      For the Duchesse/Duchess point--its actually not a mispronunciation! They are simply the same word in different languages. The French word, spelled duchesse, is pronounce "doo-chess", while the English word, duchess, is pronounced "duh-chess". You'll see listings using either version, but if the listing is spelled Duchesse, the correct pronunciation is "doo-chess".
      As for challis, voile, and faille, you're on the right track. They would be pronounced "shall-lee", "vwahl", and "feye" or "feye-yuh", respectively ("eye" as in the body part. I couldn't think of a better way to indicate it without using IPL, and "f-eye" indicated a syllabic break, which that word doesn't have). If you're pronouncing faille the second way, which is technically more correct, there is almost no emphasis on the "yuh", to the point that its almost not there, which is why "feye" works just as well.
      Basically, French is weird, and there are a ton of silent letters. But that's a big part of why its so beautiful!

    • @theplussizecostumer
      @theplussizecostumer Рік тому

      @@toolsoffantasy you're right about that. I was once told that the only final consonants pronounced in French are the ones that are in the word "careful". All the others are silent. I think there is also a rule that some can be pronounced if the first letter in the next word is a vowel, but I'm not sure if that's correct or not.

    I don't think I specified when I commented on the last video that I didn't mean you should redo the whole skirt with new fabric at great expense. Goodness, those would be some high expectations, lol! The price of fabric does shock me into choking on my own spit a little, even when it's not my money being spent. I figured you would pull apart the skirt, match the grain lines so everything would hang better and eventually redo the hem with thinner padding. The skirt drapes so much better now and looks beautiful.

    You may be suffering from perfection drift. The dress you are making does not exist anymore as seen in the movie it has changed its shape (slightly) and color and is displayed in a museum which you do not have direct access to. Drew would no longer be able to fit in it now. (it is something like Cathy Hay and her unfinished peacock dress). Your copy target has drifted just by existing, and nothing about it is perfect nor can it be. It will be a beautiful gown and I, for one, can't wait to see you in it.

We just love to mess with it. Whatever pronunciation boats your float lol

    According to Merriam-Webster "Duchesse" is pronounced d(y)ü¦shes
    Here's a youtube video of it being spoken in a French accent: ua-cam.com/video/UXkR09GaXwE/v-deo.html

    Hi just wondering when you will upload your next world building I don't mean to bother you it's just been a little while since you last uploaded and i'm a little worried that you forgot about it. (This is my Mom's accountant so pleas do not judge her off of my decisions.)

    I think duchesse is pronounced the same way you said it but with the "ch" as a "sh" because French.
