Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 5 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming background I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15 We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to were we are now. We took on a 500 acre hill farm in 2019 currently 5 years into the tenancy.

It was so lovely to see the kids involved. They love it, don't they. Little Jim, though, wow, what a trooper. He did so well at the auction. You all work so hard. I hope you get up to 6k subs by the end of the month. 😊

Just caught up on your videos Sam. Love them all, your really capturing the true graft you & the family put in, showing what it takes to put good quality food on our tables. Your style has got better & better.

Great help from the kids. Lovely to see them getting involved. If you could move the hurdles round more as the number of lambs gets smaller it would keep lambs nearer to you it would make it easier for you. Just a suggestion. Glad ye got on well at market.
@JamesPrendergast-is6ob yes just we ran out of hurdles to put on the sides and they climb through the green barriers and get mixed up 🤣 we need to buy some more hurdles when times right 🤣🤣

Lovely clean batch of lambs for the buyer, everything done with them to. Good price to, lambs def are better trade with yous than here in northern Ireland . It takes it all thou. Great video as always sam.

In the good old days of the meat and livestock commission there used to be posters up in all the auctions about the bruising from grabbing fleeces when handling lambs especially at dipping . You thought of tightening your pre dip pen up ? One hand under their chin is plenty if you right close. Good lambs and the trade blows your mind when you think soneone still some work to do before they can be cashed in . Great year for selling store lambs
@ianmcgrath6493 Some would be roughly 30kg-35 so they wouldn't have to run them on long untill their fat. And what fat prices were... 180 ish give or take makes us want to keep to fatten but we don't have the grass or space. It's a shame! But yes, pulling fleeces can bruise. Thankfully, I have a new toy from now on that will not cause any stress to us or the sheep. 😁😄
Don't know how old jim is but he gets well stuck in said it before and I will say it again your children are a great credit to you Sam hope little Sheila is doing grand . Hope you did well at Bentham.

What weight and price did ye get at the mart? Lambs look good. Do ye keep your own ewe lambs back for replacement ewes?
Yes we keep every ewe lamb (apart from these beltex ones, they wouldn't do well on a hill farm to soft) and pick out ones that don't make the grade .later on and cash them in. These would weigh 30kg ish (we don't have scales) and made £95

Why would you drench lambs your going to sell
They were a little dirty and wanted doing so they will clear up for the new buyer we like to keep things right

It’s the optics for the public, how potential consumers see it especially those at an impressionable age. They just see the stick hitting them.
There are a few very influential people who think that the hills should be returned to nature and they could release a few wolves to control deer 🤦♂️ but how do you think they could use photos to bash farmers to push their agenda 🤷♂️
Well seeing you don’t work large amounts of sheep abusing and driving are very different 👍🏻
