I have just started to watch your videos, and not only enjoyable to watch, I think you are one of the most organised persons I’ve seen, your attention to detail the business is amazing, and your attitude towards your staff is truly outstanding and they all look as though they really enjoy working for you and that you have a laugh with them whilst running a serious business. Love the way you explain things, If more people watched videos like yours and others they wouldn’t be so quick to slate farming and farmers. I’m not a farmer but was brought up working on a farm from the age of 11 to 16 and (now in my 50s) completely lost touch with the farming world but watching videos like your I feel like part of the community.
Brilliant video James, I am a farmer in Berkshire and I have to admit I really don’t like big farming companies as yourselves as I feel you don’t farm properly and can’t get around it all properly! Loving your videos coming from a farming career myself and your farming operations is extremely well managed going to be sunny for a few days so crack on while you can, you have some verry good dedicated workers that is for sure which must make your job a lot easier knowing things will be done right by all the guys & girls in the team.

Another great video, too bad the weather is not cooperating. What is wrong with some of the non- farming public back in the UK and issues with trespassing, tipping, and vandalism to farm machinery? In the 40 years I've lived in Canada (in highly populated areas) I have never seen any issues like that here, equipment can stand in fields for weeks, and no one even thinks of touching it. A different society I suppose. I could be wrong but oil seed rape is called Canola here in N America as it was bred/hybridized here and it stands for Canadian Oil, I think. Not so much a PC thing, thank the Lord, more of a breeding name/trade mark, which has stuck for the last several decades Keep the great videos coming. Good luck with the rest of the 2024 harvest.
James, next season we should be able to apply MAPP sprays with drones in the UK. America and Australia have adopted drones into farming and they certainly have their place in the recent wet ground condition and perhaps a solution to minimise the problems you are seeing this year with the wheelings effecting the rye grass in your crops. Whilst an 8m spray swath currently may seem limiting the speed and adaptability of drones I feel will have their place. Would be happy to discuss.
In South Africa I found rye grass quite resilient to some herbicide only applications; so I tended to have a heavy roller following the drill with a herbicide applicator. This was in the 80’s though. It goes without saying mechanised agriculture has advanced dramatically since then. The theory behind this was to reduce the depth of the wheel track minimising the water pooling area, reducing the advantage for invaders that require less heat units to germinate. We tended to require more glyphosate based products in heavy traffic areas and obviously less on less vulnerable areas. I’d be interested to hear what methods are being implemented nowadays.
Good update James , shame this weather don't settle for you & everyone else to crack on. The rye grass will be a problem even when it comes to baling, it will put the moisture up in the bales too. Good idea with the microwave, hot food when needed is a bonus for the guys when doing long days .

Terribly stop start harvest here in Ireland too. Some winter barley cut but nothing baled in my area. Surprisingly our yields aren’t coming in too badly even though we’ve had very very similar weather to ye this year. No sunshine and very little heat.

The weather is very frustrating I'm doing 2nd cut this week but no chance to combine. Budgeting 9.5t/ha in a year like this was pretty brave.....the price was never going to stay at the artificial levels £150 historically has been a decent price

As a retired combine operator of 40 years. This summer reminds me of two awful years.. 1985. 2011.. What we use to call a SNATCH N GRAB YEAR.. Glad I'm retired this year first year enjoying summer...😂 P.s Bet the milling Wheats quality will be suspect this year..😢 Wet straw ?? Open up top sieve and up the air... if grain is over 15% you'll be amazed how much wind you can use.... As for the reduced use of Glyphosphate these green bottoms in crops will really be hampered by 40ft plus headers.. I can see it going back to smaller headers especially needed in a wet year with grassy bottom.. God help farmers in wet years with the N.H CR11 and J.D X9..!!! 50ft headers.. Need any help give me a shout...

Great videos. We have just put our combines on RTk with Solsteer kits, 7.70 headers working with 30m tramlines. not exactly ctf but after only 2 days harvest the efficiency gains are huge and we can avoid laying swaths in deep tramlines. Do you still grow potatoes and beet?
Complete load of tosh ref the ozone problem from cows etc, these so called professor types forget about the brown stuff (green on spring grass) that comes out of the back end of cattle helping to add carbon to soil as well as improving soil fertility. Interesting update James not sure how you manage to crack a smile or two while still stressing about rain, lower then expected yields, lower then budgeted prices as well as ever increasing rye grass. Keep it up.

If you are having RG coming up in your sprayer wheel marks. Could you not make a round up sprayer to go on a tractor that goes around in say may time that will just sprayer off the tram lines?

Everyone who has any interest in where food comes from should listen to the first 2 minutes to understand the challenges farmers face.

For the rye grass, are there two non-grass crops that would work in your soil to enable you to spray for grasses?
Could you not spray of the rye grass before harvest ?
