  • Hello 👋
Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.😉😁

Hi same great to see ye out and about at the market as family working together...I totally agree with you about sale prices...another thing I can't really understand about farmers is..farmers buy there inputs at retail price, and sell ther goods at wholesale price,to who ever wants to pay what they want...humm
And this is the financia model on most farmers..no wonder there's no money in farming..

sometimes i watch Dragons Den on telly......and they always talk about what there margin is and if there isn't a good margin the dragons won't invest.......if a farmer went on there and asked for some investment from a dragon i think we would soon be showed the door. you will have to get some t shirts printed for the kids with 'we need feeding so please bid again' printed on the back of there shirts for when there in the sale ring😀😀

It’s supply and demand shot supply equals big price its the same here in Australia the big supermarkets have to much power to set the price they will pay the producer it’s not right for the farmers the price should be set at what it costs to produce

It's the way farming is and has always been you can only get what the buyers are prepared to pay because they want to sell it on to the next buyer before it goes to the person looking to get the meat from it, far to many people taking their bit from the top the only farmers making money are the guys who have thousands of acres and more head of stock that they can't keep count given them even more money from subsidise make it even easier for them to take even less money at the market any way on wards and upwards, enjoyed your video keep at it

I think farming is more similar to other industries than farmers realise. Every industry has to set a price that is attractive to buyers while being profitable or go bust. The gamble is the fluctuations of production often weather dependent but also farmers going in and out of things resulting in huge price fluctuations.
Pigs used to work on a 4 year cycle. Prices would be good, production went up to the point of over supply and some would go bankrupt after overextending themselves and the cycle would restart.
But 2 outside influences changed things. Buyers got larger while British farmers look to get the best price over each other rather than against the buyers. On the continent they cooperate to get long term prices whereas we look at the here and now in the UK. It’s so ingrained in the UK so I can’t see that changing.
Secondly the government says one thing and does another. They want high welfare but low food prices resulting in the competitive disadvantage.
Going back to pigs, the most successful used to be the ones who consolidated in the good times and expanded in the lean. It’s not a hard and fast rule but worth considering while prices are high.

I understand what you were saying about prices & meat quality etc. Sadly a lot of the population here has got used to cheap & cheerfull so theyre reluctant to pay any more even if the quality is way better. Speaking to traders at farm shops & farmers markets when i can they say the same - people are reluctant to pay £2.50 for a pie 🥧 cos theyre used to getting 3 for that price from supermarket or big chain bakers.
Education is the key and your doing your bit so be proud and keep grafting and keep flying the flag for British food.

If your videos make just a few people go away and think about price vs quality & welfare standards then that's a win, then if 1 person changes their habits then you've started the snowball effect.

Absolutely need more farm shops around. Nothing beats a proper farm shop like they used to be farm markets where you go for your essentials. Just the government doesn't seem to be backing it. 😕 its the cost and Al the preparation and health and safety to get through even before you can start thinking of selling. They don't make anything easy 🤣 I would love to open a little farm shop home reared made with love . Be brilliant

    • @Sam-shutt
      @Sam-shutt  Місяць тому

Only time we sell swaledales is when there knackerd, so go through the cast/fat ring and we try and sell them as draft ewes, which I will explain once the time comes. Ideally our neighbours will be selling to so usually its a lowland farm that buys them 😀 so not close but yes if they were to go back near were they came from a few might wonder back

Farmers are price takers. I thought your lambs were the best in the ring. I just think it a bit sad not taking the lambs through to slaughter weight but I am guessing , being a hill farm, you may have to sell lambs as stores. The girls enjoyed being in the ring I think.

Selling stock is hard when you want to grow the flock, but needs must.
Selling the kids for £100...you let them go cheap ! I suppose it would save you a lot on food to have them sold but you can't do that, so just have to take them home.
There must be some farmers with money who are able to buy your sheep.
Was Jimmy crying or whining all through the auction of your sheep ? It sounds like that.
I try to buy meat from my village butcher. He gets animals from this area. We also have a couple of farms nearby which sell vegetables grown on the farm. I use them as often as I can. That's my bit for my local farmers.
A lot of supermarkets do sell British grown foods but there's always going to be price pressure from imports.
