Some nice guitar work here from James Burton, recorded in Omaha, Nebraska, June 19th 1977. #Elvis #ElvisinConcert #JamesBurton #guitarsolo #TCBBand #JohnnyBGoode
It's interesting, in the scheme of things, to see how much Elvis actually improved during this tour, and his final show in Indianapolis was much better than the filmed shows in Omaha and Rapid City, and he seemed in a particularly good mood at the end of the tour.
James Burton was one of the best guitar player in the world and I was probably knew it. Elvis only pick the best he had the best drummer Ronnie tutt. And the best. Guitarist.
I never appreciated just how bad Charlie Hodge's singing voice was until I heard it just now, where for some reason, they have the sound from his microphone overtaking that of Elvis' mic. If Elvis hadn't been such a loyal friend, I doubt he would've gotten very far in a singing career of his own.
This show was really affected by sound issues unfortunately, I think Elvis realised that the night was not going particularly well, and he was not in great form himself. The mix was off for a good part of the show, as you rightly observed, with Charlie's voice dominating. When the mix was right, however, I think his harmony worked very well, in particular on better versions of Johnny B Goode when it was actually part of the setlist rather than used as James' party trick. There were some great examples of this from 73 and 74. But you're right, the effect on this occasion wasn't great. Charlie did in fact have reasonable success as vocalist in his own right, with a gospel group called the Foggy River Boys. Thanks for commenting :)
Why does the backup singer over tolerate Elvis's voice he's supposed to be a harmonizing. If I was I was crazy I would jump all over the song man that. Since I was started singing then the backup singer was too loud and it sounded horrible
Fair point, but it wasn't intentional, they were having some technical problems with mic malfunctions and couldn't seem to get to grips with it - it was an issue on and off throughout the show. Elvis actually alluded to it at the end of the performance. Annett Wolf, who worked on the Elvis in Concert special, filming backstage segments and fan interviews, later said in an interview that the technical issues meant that a lot of the stage footage from that show was unusable. But it wasn't Elvis' best night either.
Thanks for commenting. He certainly wasn't in great shape for this show, and there were also some sound problems, a malfunctioning mic that they couldn't quite get sorted. But he improved over the next few nights, and did a great show in Indianapolis on the final night of the tour. Unfortunately the film crew had already left the tour by then.
Yeah, he looked. Terrible sounded terrible. Why are people always making excuses for him? Womanizer freak, phony stole all the black peoples moves and made it popular because he was white didn’t write his own music didn’t play his own instrument. Thank you thank you very much it’s time to get a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Thank you thank you very much.
just look at how sick Elvis looks, and take a look at James today, still going strong.
