    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart) is surrounded by banditos at a watering hole in the desert.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    John Huston's 1948 treasure-hunt classic begins as drifter Fred C. Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart), down and out in Tampico, Mexico, impulsively spends his last bit of dough on a lottery ticket. Later on, Dobbs and fellow indigent Curtin (Tim Holt) seek shelter in a cheap flophouse and meet Howard (Walter Huston), a toothless, garrulous old coot who regales them with stories about prospecting for gold. Forcibly collecting their pay from their shifty boss, Dobbs and Curtin combine this money with Dobbs's unexpected windfall from a lottery ticket and, together with Howard, buy the tools for a prospecting expedition. Dobbs has pledged that anything they dig up will be split three ways, but Howard, who's heard that song before, doesn't quite swallow this. As the gold is mined and measured, Dobbs grows increasingly paranoid and distrustful, and the men gradually turn against each other on the way toward a bitterly ironic conclusion. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a superior morality play and one of the best movie treatments of the corrosiveness of greed. Huston keeps a typically light and entertaining touch despite the strong theme, for which he won Oscars for both Director and Screenplay, as well as a supporting award for his father Walter, making Walter, John, and Anjelica Huston the only three generations of one family all to win Oscars.

    The bandits are basically hyenas or jackals in human form. They notice Dobbs on his own ,measure him up and come in packs ready for the pounce, particularly Gold Hat , he's seemingly friendly to Dobbs but its all to stall him until he's ready to make a move . Notice how when he notices the hides the other bandits immediately go either side obstentively cutting of any exist for Dobbs.

    People today might not know, that around the time the Treasure of Sierra Madre came out (1948), it was considred a career killer for a star to play a miserable/bad guy like Fred C Dobbs. Speaks volumes of Bogie he didnt give a damn, and we got an amazing film gem. The great Montgomery Clift followed suit in the Heiress(1949) and later in the Place In the Sun (1951) with unpleasant characters. Thanks to these two legends, we fortunately have A list male actors playing villains!

  • @WinslowLeach1974
    @WinslowLeach1974 2 роки тому +6

    Taking out the head-rolling led to some bad-looking editing, because both times the main bandit chops at Dobbs' head the three bandits are not standing together, but the reaction shots after each chop show the three bandits standing right next to each other. It would be fantastic if this scene could surface in full and uncut. Doesn't change how phenomenal the film is of course.

      This is one of very few Hollywood movies that manages to portray Mexican actors correctly as far as language goes. You can tell just by hearing them speak Spanish it is Mexican Spanish, not Spanish from a person born in the U.S. Most Hollywood movies now tend to employ Chicano actors to portray Mexicans, but the accent is always a dead giveaway, I guess Hollywood figures many moviegoers won't know the difference. Those of us who know can tell.
