Bogart and Western icon Holt are magnificent but Walter Huston gives one of the greatest performances ever filmed. Quiet and serene, and then dancing as he calls the men fools for not seeing the gold at their feet. The 'I know what Gold does the Men's souls' speech is simply one of the best monologues ever.

Still the greatest American film of all-time. The ultimate combination of realism & creative expression. The incomparable tandem of Huston & Bogart reached their zenith with this masterwork of art.
his performance is.... I don't have a word that enough to describe his amazingness, so glad that he got the oscar for this but i'm sad knowing that he passed away just a year after... you will be remembered forever.
A well deserved Oscar for this performance, Walter Huston, a Canadian, was one of the finest American actors of the 1930s and '40s. Although little remembered today. Huston (John's father) was a compelling performer in straight drama (Dodsworth is a standout) as well as quirky comedic roles, in particular The Devil and Daniel Webster. If you ever see his name associated with a film, buy it, rent it, watch it. you'll be glad you did.
The old codger who says to Walter Houston. "What are you doing in here. a down and outer?" is actually Jack Holt, father of Tim Holt, the Curtain character.Jack Holt was a cowboy star; the Artist who originated Dick Tracy said he had modeled Tracy "On my favorite movie tough guy, Jack Holt."

John Steinbeck is another author like Travers (the author of the book) who gave great insight into business and economics in his writings. Check out Frank Norri. In Octopus he describes real abuses of monopolies by railroad companies in California. And though a socialist, Upton Sinclair is a good read on abuses in the labor market.
This movie is the most perfect allegory of that famous quote by Henry Ford: “Money doesn't change men, it merely unmasks them. If a man is naturally selfish or arrogant or greedy, the money brings that out, that's all.” A timeless and still very relevant masterpiece!
I went mining for diamonds in minecraft, I am a witness to what he says, I went down for 3 diamonds, ended up two days later with 15 diamonds in my bag, lost it all when I fell into a hole of lava! :(
This is my favorite Western with Liberty Valance a close second. I wish Walter spent more time in Hollywood although he obviously learned a lot on Bway. Bogie & Huston are truly memorable in this fine film.
One of the all time classic films directed by John Huston. Great dialogue, great acting and a thoroughly gripping story. Walter Huston was simply marvellous as the eccentric, grizzled elderly gold prospector.
I recommend that that you see "Dodsworth" (1936). It's hard to believe Dodsworth and the old prospector are played by the same actor. I suppose that's why they call it acting.

He absolutely stole the scene. Such an expressive face, he ran the scene with his eyes alone... unusual for a kid that young. My husband's cousin worked with him on Baretta.
Great monologue, but the thing that sticks with me is the response to it, that gold doesn’t change people, just reveals, and by the end of the film that’s just what’s happened.
If you would like to see W.Huston's full acting range check out the movie the Devil and Daniel Webster. W.H. rec'v a Oscar nomination for playing Scratch (devil). You can go to the last scene of the movie by tubing "the Devil and Daniel Webster peach pie" Classic!!!!

"Gold ain't good for nothing but making jewelry and gold teeth." I like how the movie starts with a line about how worthless gold is.... and then what follows.
Russell Johnson said he copied the Houston jig in the "Jack and the beanstalk" episode of Gilligan's Island. Shame the camera was close in as you can't see his feet when he does it.

Howard is giving the labor theory of value. The capitalist Adam Smith, and the Communist Karl Marx both adopted the labor theory of value. But there's more to it. There's a matter of what catches people's fancy. People write best selling novels, and get rich. But most books don't sell very many copies. The difference isn't determined by how much labor went into them. There is the difference between skilled, and unskilled labor. There is good, and bad management, and entreprenurial activity.
I think Willie from the Simpsons did that awesome dance. Or maybe was the old captain. I don't know. I'm pretty sure I saw someone do that dance in the Simpsons.

Yes. Breathtaking. Absolutely.
Which is why he won the Oscar and deserved it while thanking his son with his acceptance speech!!!
Completely agree - this one speech captures Silicon Valley to a T!
this movie is a work of genius.

The amazing Walter Huston! His performance as Howard, the grizzled, elderly gold miner was truly remarkable! This film is a real classic!
one of the greatest monologues in the history of moves
Brilliant scene Walter Huston so deserved his Academy Award!🤠💰⛏️⚖️
That, friends, is brilliant acting. Complete believability. Today's "stars" can't hold a candle to him.
You said it, buster! When movies were real, movies.

Another terrific Walter Huston performance can be found in Frank Capra's "American Madness" about a bank run.

Walter Huston ❤❤❤ ...now, there's a legendary Hollywood actor ❤
The first scene gives an economics lesson in 3 sentences better than 98% of MBA programs.

"It wouldn't be that way with Me!" great line from Bogart
Huston was outstanding in this film. He dominates the screen!
Walter Huston was magnificent as the grizzled, elderly gold prospector! A superb actor!
Walter Huston makes up about 90% of this film.
agree completely...to me it doesnt really even start until he shows up.
Directed by his son John Huston both won academy awards for this film🎥📽️📽️🎬
But all eyes on Bogie.
It starts with a great script and it was well delivered by Walter Huston. That's why he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in this film.
This movie is the most perfect allegory of that famous quote by Henry Ford:
“Money doesn't change men, it merely unmasks them. If a man is naturally selfish or arrogant or greedy, the money brings that out, that's all.”

Trump. He's a Shakespearian tragedy.
This is a classic film Walter Huston's September Song brought me here, a golden oldie superb.
Love his dance. Billy Crystal has it down cold.
They made a GREAT father-son team. one of the greatest ever.
this is my favorite film of all-time. it was when I was a little kid and it still is today altho Kubrick's 'Lolita' is a strong 2nd
Wise old man, bitter middle age man, young and naive guy. Wonderful depicted characters.
One of the best adventure movies ever. Jeremiah Johnson is my second favorite.

Mr Lincoln and the outlaw by Walter huston what a voice he had
Excellent overview of human nature, ya know?
i love this old bastard.
One word for.this movie great
Couldn't have said it better myself! 👍
Robert Blake who played the Mexican boy selling the lottery tickets is still alive but no one gives him any respect,........... tragic 🤨
He absolutely stole the scene. Such an expressive face, he ran the scene with his eyes alone... unusual for a kid that young. My husband's cousin worked with him on Baretta.
There will be gold.
Great monologue, but the thing that sticks with me is the response to it, that gold doesn’t change people, just reveals, and by the end of the film that’s just what’s happened.
There is more truth about sudden fortune in this movie than you can imagine. Ask any lottery grand prize winner.
What a straight up gangster Walter Huston was
"Some guys go nutty with it".....meaning HE'D go nutty with it or else he'd be out there.
