Springbank 15 Year-Old 2022:

  • Today we return to one of our surprises from last year, the Springbank 15. As always this is 100% ex oloroso sherry, 46%, non-chill filtered, and natural color. Unlike in the past, this once again is packing a huge extra dark sherry profile. Will it hold up to the 2021 and more importantly, is this an early whisky of the year contender?

    I love this whisky.....but I did like the sourness from the old 15's. It had a delicious sourness and zebra fruit stripe bubble gum note that I really dug....with that said....this bottle with the better sherry is definitely better than the older 15's. Thanks for helping me source this one Dustin!

    Was lucky enough to find a few of the 2019s that were not selling at a local store, even at $95. Very nice amount of sherry. So well balanced with all the others flavors. A real beauty.

      @Maester Gryphon I spaced out my purchases over a couple of months to give others a chance and ended up with 4 bottles. And some of the black box and more recent "new" label 10 year olds and some 12 year olds. It was a gold mine.

    Thank you for the review. I like Springbank products with a bourbon maturation. Recently found Springbank 10 2022, Springbank 10 2022, Longrow 13 Cabernet Sauvignon. I will see if more wine maturation changes my perception of Springbank.

    Too expensive and hard to find in my area. There are a few in DC, anywhere from $160 to $190 plus the 10% DC sales tax. I picked up Campbeltown Loch blended malt for $65 USD, 46% abv, and loving it. It has the blend of Springbank, Kilkerran, Hazelburn, Longrow and Glen Scotia. Even if they wanted, they could not screw up that kind of blend. Sometimes you need to put a stop in your budget for Scotch (just like the stop loss in the stock market) and this is one of them. Cheers.

      I'd love to see that Loch locally. Will say, the balvinie 15 is now over 150. Macallan double oak (not all sherry matured) is 145-150. The glendronach 15 is now 110. HP 15 year with no sherry casks is 110. If you want a mostly first fill sherried whisky, the springbank 15 at 160 isn't really crazy in today's market.

    I managed to pick up a bottle of this in Netherlands for €105 around 2 weeks back. After some disappointment at not being able to find or even see the new Sherry 10 they released and with all the issues around Springbank supply in general, I jumped at the bottle as soon as I saw it. The 12CS tends to be my favourite but I haven't seen one since batch 19. The 18 if you can find it is ridiculously priced at over €300. And personally I find the 10 just a little average.
    I recently tasted the 2022 18YO and was blown away at the changes from previous 18's and was hoping this one follows suit with that massive meaty mouth feel I want from a Springbank. Hope I am not disappointed when I open the bottle when I return home this weekend after some overseas travel.

  • @WheelHouse1of1

    $180 near me. Too pricey. Have a 12yo batch 57.1 for a couple years now still 25% left. The only campbeltown I seem to like are Hazelburn. KK8 everyone went crazy about for me it was just a solid whisky.

    • @topshelfdustin3060
      @topshelfdustin3060 Рік тому

      I'd get ONE of these darker bottlings for that 180 just to try it. They really changed their game with these, it's worth a one time if you can't find a bar or sample of. I'd not want to go past 180 though....that's already pushing it.

  • @MrPsiman

    yeah but how could it be better than one of the 4 year whiskies Roy constantly plugs on his channel ? LOL !!! You are so correct Dustin and it has gotten old how he is a shill for all these new Scotch distilleries and they are at 12 year old prices. 10 thru 15 Springbank is the best bang for the buck from them and still have not opened the Campbeltown Loch and I expect it to taste young but decent and something you pour and let sit for 2 hours with 2 or 3 drops of water in it

    Nothing highlights the bullshit overhype of all things Springbank more than the 15 year old. Even after the idiotic hysteria of Longrow Red (which really kick-started the entire nonsense) you were able to buy all of the Springbank core range quite easily. Even the 21 and 25 could be found. By the time stocks ran down the next batch was released. When the craze started you find shops running out of the 10 but some other shops had it. The 15 would never run out. It was the least popular expression in the entire range by far. I've had two bottles and one was tainted with sulphur. I've always thought the 10 was better.I'd like to go back to it and have it make me eat my words but you can't buy it in the U.K unless you're connected or go to the distillery. Any tiny allocation is gone in seconds.
    Thanks for the sherry shout out. We've all had excellent sherry whisky so the industry has fine tuned some system of acquiring oak from Spain made to a high standard for delivering decent sherry whisky like this one. These barrels, which may be dismantled for shipping cost, and later reassembled, will not have contained drinking sherry. That old stuff that Mike and Narbi have, aged in barrels from the 60's, is where you will have to go to try stellar sherry whisky. I've had amazing Macallan 10 (paxarette) back in the 80's when I was a youngster (and guzzled down without any appreciation like any self respecting teenager) but even that wasn't mature drinking Oloroso. What the hell, let's call it sherry when it comes to whisky (even though it's not really).
    46% is a problem as I've said and I think that is obvious when you both summarise this bottle. Dustin is right, the 15 is the worst of the lot, it always has been like I said above. (Mike, you are becoming a sherry bomb freak.) I haven't tried it but I'm guessing I would give it 85/100 on a good day. I would be more than happy to be proved wrong if I could ever get a bottle. Cheers guys. WT

      To be fair the springbank 15's used to be low 70's to barely 80 for me. The last two releases from springbank mark a step up in quality that's really impossible to deny. You mentioned I believe the longrow NAS having improved in quality recently. This marks an even more significant improvement over those early "Green Box" 15's from just a few more years back. I still think good 10's are better, but this 15 is noticeably better than the last 10 I bought and brought to the channel. If springbank can keep THIS quality up, the 15 will serve as a really nice sherry bomb offering in their lineup. It's over priced, but my lord what decent heavily sherried bottle at 15 years isn't anymore. Balvinue, Tamdhu, glendronach (prices are going up fast over here), HP 15 (dead sherry casks and still over 100 here)...

    • @topshelfwhisky
      @topshelfwhisky  Рік тому

      I do like big sherried whisky and maybe I'm too forgiving with them. I agree the 46% holds it back... I, too, wish I was more appreciative of of those old regular Macallans.

    Was that one 70cl or 700ml? The last batches of Springbanks were not 750ml. What sucks these sold out to the speculators in my area. The clerk at the store I go to said one guy came in bought the case and said he'd be selling these to his connections in Asia for insane money.
