  • this is a diagnostic video for most gm 2.2l ecotec engines. common failures are timing chain, timing chain tensioner, timing chain guides, and balance shaft tensioner. This video just shows what was damaged with my engine. I hope it helps out someone as well.

A few years ago, I was at a used car lot looking at a different vehicle when the sales lady mentioned a G5 that they had & that she had just started it. (I think the car I was looking at had a dead battery or something) so, I went & looked at the G5 & test drove it. It shimmied real bad but, had bald tires. Long story short, she started it to hide the ticking of the timing chain! Turned out that, all 4 wheels were bent according to a local shop who also informed me that the control arm bushings were bad & when I changed them, the bolts were seized=Nightmare job!!! Anyways, I changed the timing chains in December in teens to 20° high weather! 2 months later, the transmission went out! I changed it myself with help from 1 friend using jacks when I really needed a transmission jack!!! Looking at the condition of your timing chain & tensioners, You are very lucky it did not skip & bend the valves!!!! Mine start tapping just at start up so, I changed the upper tensioner but soon it started tapping again so, I changed every part of the timing components except the water pump because it was freezing outside & it worked fine & still does to this day! I have it if need be!

As bad as all the timing components were within your eco-tec, I really hope that you changed every part! All the chains, tensioners, & guides! The timing is controlled via oil pressure especially on VVT equiped models making regular oil changes a NECESSITY! As soon as my oil starts to darken, I change it! Usually about 2,500 miles. My 2.2 has 197-198k & it runs great! With regular maintenance it will outlast the vehicle! Still has great power for a 4 cylinder! The tensioners operate on oil pressure & dirty oil clogs them up!

good stuff man, thank you very much... I think that sound was similar to what I was hearing, I thought it was just sticking valves. My 2007 saturn died the other day and I am just running through everything. I noticed it was slightly sluggish when I turned AC on and had a clicking in the top of the engine but she ran strong, It didn't even warn me with a check engine light, just started sputtering then wouldn't start at all lol as I was trying to get it to a safe parking spot the check eng light finally flashed right as I was pulling in and hasn't started since... fuel pressure good, battery seems strong, getting the alternator checked monday, but decided to pull the valve cover, There was a bit of slack in the timing chain which got tight as soon as I rotated the motor by hand. My mechanic friend said it is normal (but I am still worried) timing still seems pretty closely aligned to "top dead center" and even when I slowly turn the engine I can hear a couple valves sticking. (at least 95 percent sure thats what I'm hearing) battery seemed to be holding a charge so I'm doubtful the alternator is bad (but I've been told a weak one can mess up newer cars differently so worth a check) lol any thoughts? After your video I'm going to open up that cover and check that tensioners. Cheers to you, thanks again for the vid

I heard this sound for maybe a week before my car stalled on me, and it isn't cranking anymore. Timing chan I guess jumped or broke? Is my engine toast? 2.2 ecotec 04 Chevy Malibu classic

My g5 2.2 only has a chatter sound only at start up & only for a few seconds? Do the timing chain??????? All the kits are either missing timung cover gasket, or water pump, or something. Which one to get, at a resonable price?????

Thanks for this video. I have a Saturn L series with this engine, 213K miles. Some questions -
    1. Was it dirty inside the engine? Do you think this car might not have had regular oil & filter changes?
    2. Did you also change the timing chain tensioner (the one that screws in to the top of the head) to the latest design? I am thinking of doing at least that to my car soon.

I just bot a 08 G5, 65k, but a total beater, a little noisy on startup, I changed the oil, put in Synthetic. Does that bolt come loose whenever it feels like? Or what's your opinion? I won't keep it for long as it has rusty rockers, stinks of cigarettes and is filthy, but runs and drives super! Everything works perfectly, due to low mileage. I posted a vid of it last week, I'll make another...

Sry 4 so many comments but, many of the timing kits are missing 1 thing or another! Which one to get is mind boggling! On my Pontiac G5 2.2 vin-F, Do i need the timing cover gasket, or front main seal??? How did u fix your broken bolt issue? Would be nice if the 2.2 timing kit came with a water pump, oil pump, oil pan gasket, at least the valve cover gasket & o-rings & timing cover gasket, all stretch bolts! EVERYTHING NEEDED. Did u reuse any of your bolts (cam bolts, or the 2 little gears-bolts? Y the timing kits dont cime with everything is beyond me!!!!!

I need a new idler tensioner, which one do you recommend from rockauto? It's a beater 08 G5 2.2 5 speed, I won't keep it long, only got 65k, but rotted rockers, off to the auction soon
