My oncology surgeon and radiation oncologist told me that Keto was unsustainable and useless for fighting cancer. Four years later, I have reversed type two diabetes and high blood pressure and am still cancer-free. During that time, my oncology surgeon and two of her nurse practitioners started following the ketogenic diet.
I am tempted to get a copy of "Keto for Cancer" for both doctors.
I beg your pardon:
What kind of Keto did you follow?
Can you share with us the keto diets you used ?
Hi. Please kindly share the keto diet you follow to save someone please
@@alejandrodelabarra2838Keto diets are generally very low to no carb diets. But the best way for a human to thrive is a diet consisting of the Muscle Meat and Fat of large ruminant animals. Try following Dr’s Ken Berry, Anthony Chaffee, Shawn Baker, Paul Mason.
Refer them to the book. They can afford to pay. :)
I have been keto since Jan 2017. I put my 90 yr old dad on the ketogenic diet when he was diagnosed w/anal sarcoma. I had researched keto & cancer and learned it can enhance the cancer treatment benefits. He went through radiation treatments (no chemo because of his age) on keto. His radiation oncologist told us it could take up to 1 year after his treatments for the tumor to have maximum reduction. Usually w/in 3 to 6 months, maximum reduction occurs. The month of my dad’s last treatment the tumor was still there, though it had reduced in size more than they thought. His doctor scheduled us for 6 more check-ups to monitor the treatment results. On our 1st check-up, his doctor was totally surprised by the tumor disappearance. He said he has never seen such results, especially in a 90 yr old. I know that scientifically you can’t credit the success to keto, but I feel it did not hurt his treatments.
Hows your dad now ?

I started living Keto just over three months ago. My daughter says my voice lights up over the phone when I talk about its benefits. I'm spreading the word and backing it up with healthy lab results and weight loss.
Miriam was so gracious to respond to me directly with my concerns. Her book is a labor of love and is parlayed off her own personal loss. She is so giving in her knowledge. Everything she says makes sense and she puts it out in a comprehensive way for anyone considering functional self-management with a cancer diagnosis.
You are awesome, Miriam, and I'm glad we got to talk on the phone a few years back. I'm still on my keto journey, six years in, and I'm more convinced than ever that it is the best diet for me. It's more than a diet; it's a whole metabolic paradigm.

My 70 year old uncle went from stage 4 kidney cancer to stage 0 in a few short months (I think it was about 3 or 4) after going on a strict keto diet.

Glucose reduced by ketosis, but what about glutamine? Prof. Thomas Seyfried states that both need to be addressed for an effective cancer elimination therapy. Great information- thank you. Wish I knew about keto back in the day. In 2004 I battled breast cancer, estrogen positive so that was a five-year fight. And then again in 2016 I had fallopian tube Cancer., and 7 surgeries after that. I did find out I have the BRCA2 gene. In 2010 I suffered a hemorrhagic brain bleed with a lot of symptoms. I found out a year ago that I was pre-diabetic for nine years, my doctor never indicated that anything was wrong. Therefore, I never looked at my charts online. For some reason I can’t remember why but I looked it up and I saw that I was really high. I was a pre-diabetic and it got me curious so I went and looked at every blood draw I had done Since moving back from North Carolina to Wa state and that’s when I saw that I’ve been pre-diabetic at every drawl that I’ve had. So that actually made me not really angry, but very scared. So the very next day that was it I went keto, very clean, 20 carbs, or less always no fake sugars at all, I, intermittent fasted every single day, and I watched videos after videos and learned lots. Then about four months into my five month run someone finally got me to test my glucose and my keytones. I was really disappointed because my key tones were very low and my blood sugar levels were still very very high in the 120s, but I think it’s because I am a huge sugar addicted person and I drank 2 to 3 large sweet teas from McDonald’s every day. So I am thinking that I have been so insulin resistant and high pre-diabetic for so long that’s just taking me slower time to get down at the six month I added some artificial sugar once and well for like dessert and that didn’t bother me that I went to go visit my son in North Carolina. Of course they have lots of sweet tea there and that did me in. That was 2023. I am 62. I am three and back on the bandwagon.. I so want to make this a life style. Also, I know I heard too much protein can turn into something else not good for you, but on the other hand, what about if you are a carnivore?
I love the Keto diet, feel soooo much better...definitely helped me~

Detailed Summary for [10 Things You Should Know When Adopting a Keto Diet For Cancer Treatment - Miriam Kalamian]
[00:07] The ketogenic diet as an adjunct therapy for cancer
- The ketogenic diet alters the way cancer cells ferment glucose
- Protein intake needs to be carefully managed as certain amino acids can fuel cancer cells
- Excess amino acids can stimulate anabolic pathways that promote cancer progression
[03:58] Time-restricted eating is a beneficial approach to improve metabolic health and help fight against cancer.
- Time-restricted eating involves keeping a small window of time for eating, allowing for longer periods of fasting.
- Prolonged nightly fasting can send a signal of austerity to cancer cells, restricting their nutrition and promoting cell cleanup.
- Time-restricted eating is not just beneficial for cancer, but also for improving metabolic health and healthy aging.
- The ketogenic diet can be useful in various disease states due to its underlying mechanisms.
[07:43] Changing our diet can rectify health issues.
- Our evolutionary history shows that we have always adapted our diet based on what's available to us.
- More research is needed to understand if the effects observed in animal models can be replicated in humans.
- Collecting and sharing data will help us reach a better understanding of how diet affects our health.
- Eliminating sugars and simple starches from our diet can positively impact cancer.
- The use of ketone supplements for sports performance is well-known, but its role in cancer treatment is still unknown.
[10:52] Ketone supplements and fasting may have potential benefits in cancer treatment.
- A study showed that hyperbaric oxygen ketogenic diet and ketone supplements increased the survival of a mouse model for aggressive metastatic cancer.
- Ketone supplements can increase ketone levels, bringing down glucose and insulin levels, which are known cancer promoters.
- High glucose levels are associated with disease progression, and lowering glucose through dietary changes may have an impact.
- Fasting can be beneficial in cancer treatment, but caution is needed as it may not be suitable for everyone.
- Fasting can help get into ketosis and make a good impression on cancer cells, and may also help preserve muscle mass.
- Working closely with individuals to find alternative approaches to fasting is recommended.
[14:18] Monitoring glucose and ketone levels is important for managing a ketogenic diet.
- Some people don't measure anything and are unsure if they are in ketosis.
- Others micromanage and stress over their numbers multiple times a day.
- Testing before starting the program is recommended to see a reduction in glucose and increase in ketones.
- Therapeutic ketosis levels may not always be achieved.
- There is a difference between the mouse model used and the human body.
- Including high quality dairy fats can make it easier to increase fat intake in a ketogenic diet.
- Dairy can have an impact on anabolic hormones and insulin levels.
- If you have a hormone-sensitive cancer, it is advised to reduce dairy intake.
- Dairy cows have been genetically modified to produce high amounts of estrogen.
[17:44] Diet modification can help in managing side effects of cancer and its treatments.
- A food list and meal template can be helpful for cancer patients.
- Impaired nutrition is common in cancer, both as a side effect of the disease and its treatments.
- Modifying the diet can lead to improved metabolic health, lifting of brain fog, and weight loss.
- A ketogenic diet is being studied as a potential treatment for endometrial cancer.
[20:37] Ketogenic diet can have significant differences in tissue composition after surgery
- The diet may not work for everyone, especially if they are overweight or obese
- For cancer patients, the diet may need to be modified to prevent weight loss
- It is important to find a balance to benefit the patient without encouraging cancer growth
- Communication with the medical team is crucial
[23:34] Cancer and neurodegenerative diseases are growing tragedies that affect our physical well-being and lifespan.
- The incidence of cancer and Alzheimer's disease is increasing.
- Obesity and diabetes are degrading our quality of life.
- A ketogenic diet has potential benefits for cancer prevention.
- Upcoming conferences on low-carb and metabolic health.

Thanks for the advice. It applies to gout as well. So many people pop an alipurinal an don't change their diet. Less protein less sugar less beer. Your body is trying to tell you something. I haven't had a gout attack for years since changing diet. No pills.
Dear Miriam, thank you for all you wonderful work. Are you familiar with the work of Dr. Clemens at Paleomedicina? Her results with a Paleo Ketogenic diet seem to be extraordinary in all kinds of cancers and other illnesses.
So many equate fasting to starvation. So for some time restricted eating may be the term to use. For example a dozen doughnuts sounds better than 12 little diabetic comas. But also some people may respond better to shock therapy and starvation would work better as a term. I believe extremes are good.
So important to guage weight loss and modify accordingly. Occasionally, i lose a tad too much weight. Wonderful! I have a breakout day. It works.

I follow the paleomedicina protocol which is low protein from red meat and organs and 80% fat from animal fats no dairy, vegetables or fruit. Most celebrity carnivore doctors promote high protein and most keto doctors as well. I think many people are over eating protein. I was eating low fat and 2-3lbs of meat a day now I’m the opposite and feel amazing.
too much beef makes me smell bad too 🤢 idk but i can tell the difference which is why i stay away from red meat more often
Yes she's saying this - don't do too much meat. And Keto isn't that much protein, - mostly fat.
@@user-xe9zc4ng8wyou can eat it raw. You can eat sticks of butter. I cook steak and chop it up put it in a bowl and drown it in chunks of beef tallow. Or I eat frozen chunks of beef tallow. Or you can just eat very fatty cuts of meat. Pork belly is great protein to fat ratio.

yep all good advice Doctor ...and get rid of sugar in the diet.. ALL sugar . Did you mention that ? I'm not a doc but here's my take Sugar causes a boost to glucose followed by a boost to insulin . However the insulin spike is delayed . In the period between the boost to glucose above ?130 ? we become temporarily hyperglycemic which is the danger period . Why? By observation type one diabetes have far higher rates of cancer than the normal population because the control of glucose is difficult and theses patients can often be in hyperglycemia It is no surprise then that the fast food sugar diet of many is leading to type 2 diabetes and generating increase cancer rates because folks are regularly in hyperglycemia ..If you must have sugar burn it off with exercise to pull the glucose levels down to within a healthy range . Comments ?

You talked about a eating window. What is the window that's most beneficial?
From my understanding, probably 6-8 hours for your eating window.

Don’t make it a white knuckle affair.

Dear:
I was diagnosed Prostate Cancer.
So I begun a Keto diet, which was successful at first glance.
But over time it begun to diminish the Ketosis.
I don't know why.
In the meanwhile, Cancer continued to grow slowly, as urinate problems continued.
¿Do you know why?
What did you do yo inhibit glutamine? Sorry for your regression
😢
How did you measure ketosis? If you're using urine strips, it wouldn't show eventually because your body starts using ketone efficiently. Anything in the urine is the excess and what the body did not use.
I wonder how the carnivore diet can impact a cancer patient. Because of all the protein involved, which can be ultimately converted into glucose and thus feed the cancer, I’m wondering whether that is as good as the ketogenic diet. Should a patient with cancer limit red meat or other animal protein?
I was wondering the same thing. Hope someone can give some advice.
The problem with meat is the glutamine. Not glucose. But if you can go into ketosis it will fight cancer cells too.

Many thanks dear Mrs. Kalamian for sharing all this knowledge! Just a specific question about time restriction on eating; Valter Longo says evidence shows that more, -or less,- than 12 hours of no eating, on the long term, decreases longevity. I’ve been following keto maintenance for quite a while. Carbs alone just make me feel hungry. Adding a little in after having veggies, protein and fat in moderation (with vinegar as a flavoring) keeps me full for a long time. I’ve also added ground flax seed which slows digestion and keeps you full for longer

Can type 1 Diabetic do the Keto diet? It could cause DKA in a diabetic.
I have heard that it is possible. But absolutely you know it needs to be done in conjunction with your doctor or doctors. I don’t think many doctors would do it so you might have to do is some research and some calling and talking to other doctors about what the protocol would be. If your doctor said no, you would have to find another doctor if you really thought that was the right way for you.
Of course you can. Find a keto carnivore MD.
Sorry, my mistake. I was fasting and for 5 days and the result was DKA. I consused fasting with Keto.
What in our bodies regulates estrogen?
Hi Devorah BatMiriamGoldaVMordecai Bayer, here you are 😊,
“Regulation of Estrogen and Progesterone. The synthesis and secretion of estrogens is stimulated by follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which is, in turn, controlled by the hypothalamic gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)”
I have just been diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma liver cancer which has also spread to my pancreas.
Im trying to do as much research into keto to go alongside my chemo which will begin after my biopsy in a few weeks.
How do I go about finding the right keto plan for me? I assume it would be different to a weightloss keto diet. And should I limit red meat? Switch to more chicken and fish?
You have a challenging diagnosis - I wish you the best of luck!
I am currently trying the metabolic approach to fighting my own cancer, so I have been doing a lot of research. First off, I would recommend you find information on the danger of a high-oxalate diet (Sally Norton and Elliot Overton have many good videos on this topic).
The reason being, many of the fruits and vegetables that are low in carbohydrates, are unfortunately high or somewhat high in oxalic acid. Also, if you begin eating mostly carnivore to avoid carbs, you may trigger oxalate dumping from stored oxalate crystals in your bodies' tissues (search "oxalate dumping" for more info). This was a big problem for me because I had been eating an extremely high oxalate diet!
As far as meats are concerned, you can probably eat most any kinds, but your fish should be "wild caught" as opposed to "farm raised". Also, try to find beef that says "organic, grass-fed" on the label. When cows are fed mostly grain (not they're natural diet), it alters the composition of their fat, and good quality fat is vitally important on a ketogenic diet. This would apply for butter and cream as well. If you buy pork products or deli meats, look for "uncured" on the label. Try to find organic eggs (Farmer's Markets are often a good source). If you live in an area of the U.S. that has Lidl or Aldi's grocery stores, they generally have a more affordable selection of organic meats. They also carry a good avocado oil and organic coconut oil - both very helpful grocery items for those doing keto - you should make your own mayonnaise with the avocado oil because you can use it to make tuna, chicken, or pork salad that will help you meet your fat and protein requirements for the day - add in a little celery for taste, and to help moderate the protein total. However, Lidl and Aldi do not carry a good expeller (or cold-pressed) olive oil - I like 2 of the brands that Trader Joe's carries, but you can find good quality at most grocery stores nowadays, you just might have to pay a bit more.
I did not see any decent 'exogenous ketones" (all had chemical additives) at the two vitamin stores I visited, so you may want to order those online (Dr. Annette Bosworth's videos, aka Dr. Boz, have links to her online store). You will want some of those, also MCT oil, and electrolytes. Lidl sells bottles of "electrolyte water". Unflavored Pedialyte is a readily available source of electrolytes that can be found at most any drug store. I bought a concentrated liquid that I can add to my water, but you can also get electrolyte powder to add to your water as well.
Pink Himalayan salt, Celtic sea salt, and especially Redmond Real Salt are extremely important for replacing body salts because you will lose a lot of water on a keto diet - it's like taking diuretics - you have to supplement with electrolytes or you will get muscle weakness and cramping (I know all too well from experience)!
Berberine is a key supplement to inhibit your body's glutamine production (remember from the video, glutamine fuels cancer cells). But we need glutamine - it is an essential amino acid, so I personally take it for three days and then skip it for two. Taking MCT oil helps my body produce ketones, which are vital during this therapy, because the Berberine supplement really pulls down my blood sugar levels! Berberine and MCT oil can be found at most any vitamin store.
I didn't mean to write a book, but I hope this helps...
@eleanorsendeavors29 thankyou so much for the response. I will definitely be looking into all the reading materials you gave recommended as well as the nutrition recommendations amd things to look out for.
I really appreciate it. Thankyou
@@eleanorsendeavors29, wow...quite the research...fighting my own metastatic lung cancer and looking for some information...and brain cancer unfortunately. How is it going and did you find anything with small cell lung cancer and brain mets? Where do you get Berberine?
@@dukeblair7792 As I mentioned in my other comment, most any vitamin store will carry it because it is a popular supplement right now for weight loss. If you live in a rural area that doesn't have a vitamin shop or health food store nearby, your best bet would be to order it online - just search "Berberine", and lots of options should pop up.
Besides the ketogenic diet, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is supposed to be very helpful. The medical facilities near me that offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy only have it for wound healing, etc., not for cancer treatment. For a few thousand dollars you can purchase an oxygen chamber to use in your own home - they look about the size of a tanning bed. I am considering doing that myself!
These treatments may ultimately not free me of cancer, but I feel quite confident that they will at least extend my life - time will tell. But for a diagnosis such as yours, conventional medicine doesn't offer much hope, so you really have nothing to lose by trying. It's been weird trying to adjust to this diet - I don't have too much trouble adhering to it because I can eat a reasonable variety of foods. I love my fruits and vegetables, so I am grateful that I can still eat them in a limited fashion, and remain in ketosis (you may want to purchase a Glucose/Ketone monitor to check your progress). It took me a while to start making ketones, but now that doesn't seem to be a problem. I looked up a chart for carbohydrate content in foods, and found that I can eat cabbage, kale, eggplant, spaghetti squash, zucchini, summer squash, string beans, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers, radishes, sprouts, bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower, avocados, tomato, berries, melon and even a slice of sprouted grain bread occasionally. So meals aren't boring, they just require more planning so I don't exceed my daily carb count and I meet my fat requirements. But I still struggle with my electrolytes going low (muscle weakness, and cramping in the early morning hours), even though I have been using natural salts and electrolyte drops. Also, I got a super bad keto rash, but thankfully it cleared up after 3 weeks of distress! But despite all this, I feel quite good now - my severe hayfever allergies have completely disappeared and my digestion feels better (not as gassy). I also feel more alert mentally... Good luck!
Health food stores or Amazon.
The thing that still confuses me is the insulin response and protein. Dr. Ben Bikman teaches that protein only spikes insulin when we consume carbs and are primarily glucose-burners, while others still talk about protein spiking insulin even when no carbs are eaten. Hmm.
Dr. Eric Berg has 100's of You Tube vids that can help answer your question. I recommend him.
@@monicacollins8289 Yes, I know of his work. Dr. Ben Bikman is one of the very best, so I'm going to double-check with him.

Keto diet for cancer need be vegetarian or we can have meat?
serbov luminita meat is great 👍
🌻🥰
Don't just do keto do carnivorous for best results with the same macros but your getting maximum nutrition and best for digestive tract. Fiber damages digestive tract.
So why not Keto alone then? Also seeing stats about chemo etc- it's not very high success ratio.

The three questions that need to be asked to your doctors, your oncologists, your clinic, are:⠀
⠀
1. Is the proposed treatment based on the Somatic Mutation Theory of cancer or the Mitochondria Metabolic Theory of cancer?⠀
⠀
2. Will the proposed treatment be able to reduce the availability of glucose and glutamine, the two fuels that are driving the disregulated growth of cancer?⠀
⠀
3. Will the proposed treatment target the cancer cells while enhancing the health and vitality of the person's normal cells and tissues?⠀

Why do many also heal on a low fat, planrbased vegan type protocol? The keto idea is a simple one, starve cancer by using ketones and not sugar seeing as glucose feeds cancer, lprotein is kept low to keep mtor, igf1 or growth factors low, plantbased low fat approach is similar but the body is flooded with anti oxudant ricj polyphenols, vitamins, minerals and compounds that have been shown to have anti cancer properties, tomatoes- lycopene, soy - genestien, crucifers, mushrooms, leafy greens, various friuts and veg. Glutamine feeds cancer also but bereberine can affect this ive read, my question is how have others healed on a high carb plantbased diet? 8n the 70's onwards ppl have healed on macrobiotic approach, the gerson diet, etc.
