Good start! That's a big flea market pile 😊 One suggestion, be careful the art project doesn't become an excuse to keep things that should go. "Maybe" piles can get out of control.

The "art project" is a delusion and she is using it as an excuse to rehoard. She needs psychiatric intervention, not an organizer.

I have issues with overconsumption and, though I have clear floors and most surfaces, I can absolutely see myself falling into that mind set. It’s unreal how many times I’ve essentially said, I’m getting rid of that but I have to keep it first. 🙈

What an absolute sweetheart of a lady! I used to have over 100 pairs of shoes in my 20s, now as I approach my 50s, I'm probably down to about 20 and I'd be OK to let a few more go. Sometimes it takes a LOT of passes 😂😂🎉

I think April has a high level of emotional-intelligence and a deep respect for the differences in people. I think it's obvious she lives as she believes all would be happier - with just has much stuff as is required and loved and no more - but she always schools herself and controls her response to be able to help the person in their current state - not some dream reality where the person's already done four passes and is getting better at focusing in and targeting their dream space - but now - when they're overwhelmed and have no structure to work within to help themselves get where they distantly see they want to be. It's a talent, but you could work to get there - think of it just like a decluttering muscle - letting go of your frustration and anxiety with clutter to be able to help others 😊

Hello and hugs to Tracy (we went to school together in the middle of the US ::mumbles:: years ago!) - Tracy, I get it - I have ADHD, too, and share a birthday with Imelda Marcos. ;) I love shoes and the stories they tell, too. They are tricky to declutter! I am excited to follow your journey on Instagram and cheer you on from the States! I have been watching April for years and love her content. I am thrilled you guys are working together and excited for your decluttering journey. I dug in to my own stuff about a decade ago, and it's made a huge difference in my relationship, well-being, and space. Yay, Tracy! xx

What a great example of adapting strategies to a person and her place. Love her customized un-hoarding project -- choosing and documenting the stories and her association with special shoes before some of them move on. A creative approach which might take longer but will have personal meaning in the end. There are a lot of life and personal experiences embodied in many of the things we find hardest to part with and I'll bet Tracy's Instagram will also inspire others, who might take a quicker route but might not have started the journey otherwise. Thanks to Tracy for allowing us in. Great job, you two.

She's doing really well! We're all cheering for her from the sidelines, like she's running a marathon, so she's not alone on her journey!
I love the idea of the great unhoard!
I wish I had the patience to take pictures or something of my shoes before letting them go, but I was more in a state of they have to leave my house immediately or they'll stay because I'll be too lazy to do that again the first declutter. The next 2, I was just gleeful to get rid of stuff & going "space, space, I have space!", lol. I'll do a last pass soon. I do one every change of cold/warm, but I'll have time soon, so I'll do a thorough full pass & that will be it. Then it will be just maintenance & only buying what's worth the use of my precious empty space.

Whoa - she sure has a lot of shoes. It's going to take a few passes going through each category to get it more manageable.
I tried to help someone like this, it was very difficult. She wanted to tell the story of each item as we sorted, she didn't understand the "quick sort" theory. She had 176 shirts on hangers, this didn't include All the shirts in 2 dressers that were full or ones in the laundry!

    • @darleneh608

A 70+ man I know decided to thin out his short sleeved tshirts. He donated 75 of them. His wife says he still has 100+ that he isn't parting with.
I used to beat myself up for having more than I needed. At my worst, I never managed to get anywhere near having 175+ short sleeved tshirts.

    • @thinkerdreamersketcherspy
      @thinkerdreamersketcherspy 7 місяців тому

I'm the "story for every item" kinda person and it makes cleaning and decluttering *so* hard! I can remember almost every receipt and piece of packaging and there's a story for everything. To combine that with the fact that I don't want to throw usable things away... Yeah, can't get rid of anything. Would love to learn how.
As an example, just today I ran across a cardboard sleeve for a chocolate bar in our burn pile. My mom brought that chocolate for me over 30 years ago, from Austria. Like, who keeps a chocolate wrapping for 30 years? And wants to rescue it from the trash? Apparently I do.

A tip from me I recently had to declutter a persons 30 year old clothing hoard. Clothes that are not used also need to be be washed and aired (daily airing) out even if they are only hanging in the closet. It's literaly not worth it to hang on to old textiles as those especially shirts will start to dry rot or begin foxing process (brown mold spots) just like some paper. Elastic clothings and synthetic fibres might become stiff and feel crunchy after a few years which makes them unsalvadgable. If there is a way you can convince the person you are helping out that their time is not worth it to care for rotted clothes you may change their mind.@@darleneh608

I am asking myself if flew market means, she is doing it herself ( and potentially bringing back all the not sold shoes...) or if it means she brings it to someone or a shop who is selling it. For me it always was a too big barrier to get rid of things myself. I am creative person too- I stopped keeping things "for projects" as I never ever was doing them. Also I think a no buying year or more could solve a lot of issues, as they are many things freshly bought. Uff, you two are doing so well and you are so positive! I definitely cannot handle a lot of things around me, I am immediately overwhelmed even watching this. And I am glad I got further and further in downsizing as its so much mor life supportive and healthy for me than keeping things...:)

A very important rule to helping someone declutter, is to not let them touch the item they're considering. Stand at a bit of a distance and let them decide. All retailers know one of the great keys to getting someone to buy their products is to get the customer to hold the item. That's when the connection begins.

Amazing work! You could feel the tense emotions - the hesitation and anxiety and you still helped Tracey through the process and made a huge huge! difference. I want to be able to help people like this - with your compassion and respect for the person you work with. Well done, Tracey!

I had a similar problem with a pair of sandals of another brand. They fixed it but they were no longer that comfortable like before because they got tighter in the fixed area.

Wow Tracy, well done! I'm a shoe person too and starting with this is not easy but you did SO WELL!! And your picture project is a fantastic idea, keeping the memory but making space at the same time is genius! I watched this video during a break from my own decluttering / tidying projects and it gave me major motivation to continue, so I'm very much looking forward to the next video!

I’m really amazed how she wore and really used her shoes. Yes she had a lot but they were used ! I feel better about having so many now I forgive myself because I often think about growing up and only having maybe 5. Life is different today there is no right or wrong amount.

Omg! I can’t believe you started her on 👠! I retired 10 years ago and still have high end stilettos that kill my feet. She did a fantastic job of deciding on her sorting! Wishing you the best! Good job. 👏

Not easy to do this esp when your clothes are fun and expression, which it seems yours are. Keep going it will feels so good!

First I've became a saver ..I had 3 fully furnished rental.places.Then I was described as an organized hoarder .Not wanting to be in that category.
    I disciplined myself to downsize
at least 14 things a week . I've been doing that now for 3 years with some time off during extremely cold winter weeks. I was able to get a dopamine rush from giving instead of accumulating. I now am living in an organized less than average possessions place. I still have 2 totes of pictures to downsize. ..very emotionally hard to do. I can't tell you how many trips I made to Goodwill..how many expensive donated items..Now 20 large totes would be needed to contain everything I that I own..2 recliners 1 bed 1 curio cabinet..2 average tvs 2 coat trees..no dresser..4 tv trays.

    Its a good start.
    That is so much better!
    It was suffocating before.
At minimum needs to be done on yearly basis, if not every six months in order to avoid getting right back into the same situation.
When I see that level of clutter, I just see money that has been flushed down the toilet on things that are never or rarely used.
    It keeps people poor.
Congrats on being brave enough to show people your situation and what can happen when we attach such meaning to "things."
A cautionary tale, to be sure.

nice episode, tracy did a great job! i think something to think about for the future is a better shoe storage options, maybe something that can be adjusted to have varying shelf heights for different shoes.

What a great video, and a great reminder that it's okay to take multiple passes to declutter a space. I feel like we often think we have to get it perfect in 1 try, when in reality it's okay if it takes a lot of passes.

Well done both of you! I find it hard to get comfortable shoes which my bank balance and limited shoe storage is thankful for. I have a few pairs of winter leather boots and store them in their original boxes in the summer. In the autumn I get them out and put my sandals in the boxes. I find this helps with storage and my cupboard isn’t so cluttered.
