It’s a staple of cheesy action movies and TV shows-a harebrained solution that is so outlandish the protagonists just might pull it off. “It’s just crazy enough to work,” they always say. However, plans that seem wildly implausible, but somehow manage to succeed, don’t only exist in the world of fiction. Below are 10 real-life crazy schemes, plans, and ideas that really were just wacky enough to work…

Here's another crazy idea that worked: In 1907, White Star Liner SS Suevic ran aground and it got stuck. After exhausting all the options to free the ship up, the operator decided to use dynamite to sever the stuck bow section of the ship and free up the remaining part of the ship. Despite losing a bow section, Suevic remained afloat thanks to the watertight bullheads, the ship made it back to Southampton sailing in reverse, guided by tugs and it was later sailed to Belfast for a full repair.
Either we scuttle it or we save it a win either way 😂
Simon, you without a doubt, have the most interesting and informative channels and ZERO click-bait. Thanks again Sir!!
BrewBlaster well, he is clicbaity, but he actually delivers it
Pedro Rocha I like his contents, but I find him noisy at the same time 😂😂😂
But... he is clickbait.
I'll rephrase that as TRUE Click-Bait then!!
It's just click bait that actually pays off. Satisfying because you get what you came for. Not annoying because it wasn't intended to mislead.
"if it's stupid, but it works, it ain't stupid!" - Homer Simpson
Murphy's Law of Combat
Jingles rule of warfare???
Uhhhhh, you really think homer simpson was the first person to say this oooorrrrr??? 👀👀

So, I work 5 or 6 days a week, does that mean I'm actually not stupid? Lol
I am continually fascinated by the concept of dazzle camo - I love the counterintuitive nature, which is also why I love the concept of hiding bombers by stringing lights all over them so they would not create tell-tale dark spots against the sky.
The lunar missions were in what's called a 'free return trajectory' from the start. If left alone, they would have shot around the moon and back towards Earth. The very precise burns were to a) increase the return speed to allow the ship to arrive back before it's consumables, mainly power, failed completely, and b) alter the final approach trajectory into a direct descent, rather than requiring a Earth orbit injection followed by a deorbit burn. That last one was very very critical, the corridor that gave a safe reentry was so narrow that if you had a two foot diameter sphere representing Earth, the corridor would be thinner than a sheet of paper in that scale. Shallow and it would skip off like a stone skipping on a lake and either have repeated uncontrolled bounces or be slung off into space, slightly too deep an angle would have generated a similar skipping, and deeper still would have been too much stress for the craft to handle on reentry and it would have disintegrated.
Copper Hamster No Apollo lunar mission ever was planned to return to earth orbit on the way back from the moon. There was never any plan (or available rocket power) on any mission to perform an earth orbit injection so no de-orbit burn was ever required.
So a meteor will hit this window Everytime failing to skip like a stone upon the atmosphere this space dust far more amazing
Watch the Apollo 13 movie much? You’re quoting it verbatim.
It’s great that duct tape saved Apollo 13. It’s funny they even brought it out to space. Duct tape really can fix anything.
"If your woman don't find you handsome at least she'll find you handy" Red Green a Canadian legend.
Simon calls the Apollo a "shuttle" ... which is inaccurate.
What other tape are they gonna use?
Flex tape is the new duct tape.
Duct tape is probably still more practical, but man, Flex tape is the bee's knees.
ALAS! Duct tape can't fix my broken heart😣
dazzle camo also made it harder to accurately range with the parallax rangefinders of the time.
It also made it harder to determine direction of travel from just a short viewing.
In the 1960s we used to drive round the N.W corner of London to reach the A10 and my granny's house. By the side of the road was a building, I think a small power station, which had been "dazzled" during WW2 and left like that - somewhere near Rickmansworth I think.
I was in Hawaii when Apollo 13 safely landed! I have autographs of the astronauts.
Cool. I remember being in the school IMC (aka the library) with several other classes watching the return. I was young enough that I didn’t understand why most of the teachers cried when they splashed down.
How cool

"Since escaping from jail is not a crime in Mexico...."
....I'm sorry, what?
some countries have that rule. The Escape, as long as you do not commit any other crimes during it, does not make you serve longer. You will be hunted, but they have no law to make you serve longer for that escape. It is something that might be derived from the international laws regarding prisoners of war. A PoW has many rights and duties, and among those is, that as long as he doesn't kill someone during the escape, his captors may not punish him for escaping, since every soldier becoming a PoW has one mission: to escape captivity.
Nor should kit be.
In Germany either
I have not experienced it myself, but I am told that if you cause an accident while driving in Mexico, flee the scene. Only f you stick around to take responsibility will you get in trouble.
Moira SiJi escape naked? They just send the clothes back after.
The reason he got the 1 whammy is because he wasn't used to the button and the delay time. He quickly figured that out and the rest is history
Yeah, there was a discernable delay between the button press and the result. I used to say that the best way to guarantee you couldn't get a whammy was to actively TRY to get one, because the lights would invariably move once from when they hit the button and said "STOP!"
the kidney donation domino effect is awesome!
As a 2 time kidney transplant patient, I can personally say from experience that the kidney donation domino effect or “daisy chain” is definitely a life saver!!!
@@rayebeth the domino effect makes me tear up💜🖖
Yes, pure genius
hope the doctors won a prize for that
Actually it was John Swigert the Command Module Pilot that said, "Houston, we have a problem" and it was not a shuttle it was an Apollo Spacecraft.
He didn't say "Houston, we have a problem".
They both said it. Jack Swigert said, "Okay, Houston, we've had a problem here." Capcom at Houston replied, "This is Houston, say again, please." Jim Lovell repeated the status update with clarification, "Houston, we've had a problem. We've had a Main B Bus undervolt."
Generally, people are quoting the movie, which plays it a little differently. Kevin Bacon's Swigert says, "We have a problem here," but the dramatic emphasis is put on Tom Hanks' Lovell saying, "Houston, we have a problem." (The script also notably changes the tense in 'had' to 'have.'). Kudos to TopTenz for getting the quote right on that point.
#1 the kidney idea was my favorite.
Science fiction novelist Larry Niven described a future where any organ would be usable by anybody. Concurrent with this ability was a way of preserving organs in a "bank" ready for use. Needless to say, the demand was high. So high that stocks were depleted. And so capital punishment was restored, with the miscreants cut up for the organ banks. Even that wasn't enough. Soon, the death penalty was steadily dropped as to its trigger level, from murder, to assault, to too many traffic tickets. Eventually supply met demand.
I'd prefer to have a kidney cloned from my own dna
CraxyLunatickle
Wouldn't that be a guaranteed flaw in some cases?
Netherdan probably
If it happens to late in life probably. But with less time lived the cloned organ wouldn't suffer as much from genetic aging (by duplication cells)
The kidney swap system is genius :-)
Great list. Well presented
This one is just an urban legend, and has NO verifiable basis in fact, but unfortunately, the actual truth was never written down, so it may actually be true. When Attila the Hun reached the city of Rome in the fifth century AD, Pope Leo invited him into the city. According to the urban legend, citizens of the city dressed in rags and acted as if they were paupers, injured and starving. Leo supposedly told Attila that another band sacked Rome two weeks prior by having the city gates opened by a traitor. This marauding band took anything of value and anyone who could be used as a slave. Leo then took Attila to the place where all the riches of the church were held, only to show that it was empty. Attila, satisfied that Rome was not the wealthy city anymore, left the place. (The last part is recorded as fact.)
Even if it is not true, it sounds like a crazy story that worked.
isn't pope leo the one who said "it has served us well...this myth of Christ" ?
Apparently not. en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Pope_Leo_X
@Johnny Dominguez Chris did say 5th Century AD
To my knowladge, Attila never reach Rome,, like,,, ever o__O not even remotely that far into Europe
Leo might also have hinted that if Attila actually married Princess Honoria who had written him to come rescue her from an unwanted arranged marriage, he would end up with a wife trained by the world's scariest mother in law, whose Goth husband & brother in law both mysteriously died when they had become political liabilities.
"The domino effect" used as a term of perfect love, how beautifully odd.
I’m surprised the inflatable army isn’t on this list. One of the craziest plans during WWII.
That domino kidney system is brilliant!! #1
The Kaplan escape was made into a movie called Breakout in 1975, with Charles Bronson, Jill Ireland (ofc) and Robert Duvall.
The ASSWANG 😂😂😂
Its Aswang

The guy from push your luck withdrew all his cash into $1 bills, trying to win a radio contest in which a person having the $1 bill with an specific serial number would win a large amount of money. He then was robbed of all his money
Guess he really pushed his luck.
@@SwissSareth and apparently two drums and a cymbal
yeah this isn't true at all.
Love the idea about the swap! That’s just brilliant. Creative thinking at its best.
Having played a fair amount of World of Warships I can say that dazzle camo can work surprisingly well when a ship is sailing any course but flat broadside or straight away/towards.
I personally regard the Apollo 13 CO2 scrubber workaround as one of the greates, if not THE greatest hack in history :)
Also, that kidney swap idea is absolutely brilliant. As was the Brazilian currency idea (if I'm not mistaken, the Brazilian Real is still used, is it not?)
And as for that Mexican prison-break-by helicopter, why OH WHY hasn't that been made into a film yet?? That'd make for an AWESOME movie, I think!
I remember being in the IMC (Instructional Materials Center, 1970s term for school library) with many classes on that day in April watching the capsule return to earth. We got to sit near the front since we were the youngest class there. We collectively held our breath as the capsule lost radio signal as it passed through the atmosphere. Then we all cheered when we heard that they had splashed down. I also remember most of the adults crying with relief.
I was in the Learning Resource Center (Library).
Seriously wish I could give you more than 1 thumbs up. Your voice is easy to listen to and the subject matter is interesting.
Thank you and please keep it up.
When I was in the Navy I met an old sailor who claimed to have been on one of those dazzled ships. He said not only did it work but it worked really well. But he also said he knew where the lost squadron was located as well so I don't know if he was totally honest.
New Orleans could probably learn a lot from Holland.
You know, I think your'e right!! We will have to go beyond just this planet.....I really think we can still have some great situations and people like some legions from the past!!! There are some amazing things about to boost us all very soon!!
They (and other coastal cities in the US) could, but first we have to abandon giving our money to the 1% hoping they will protect us. Bring back the 90% tax bracket and invest in the nation.
Kindly explain how letting someone keep more of their own money is "giving our money" to them. As to the 90% tax bracket those people aren't stupid, raise taxes to 90% and they will either find more ways to protect their income or they just won't bother trying to earn it. In either case the result is LESS money being paid in taxes.
BrewBlaster new orleans actually did - with its creation, the french, and later americans, hired engineers from the netherlands to aid them in land reclamation and else
England learned a lot from Holland and Dutch engineers in the 17th c they helped create the 'Fen Land' of East Anglia containing around half of the grade 1 agricultural land in England. Part of the Fens are still known as New Holland.
This video blew my socks off. I am impressed with your delivery. I am also reviewing.
One of my favorite quotes about plans was from the sci fi series, Farscape. The main human character is listening to an alien friend's plan.
After hearing it he exclaims in disbelief:
"That's Your Plan! Wile E Coyote could come up with a better plan than that!"
Of course, the alien has no idea who Wile E Coyote was...
12:17 you really sed that Apollo 13 mission was flown in shuttle :D
The documentary Our Man In Tehran >>>>>>> Argo. That actual story is so much more fascinating than the over American-ized version. The Americans had very little to do with that operation, and the movie also didn't give proper credit to the (English/Australian I can't remember which) embassy workers who took the Americans in the night before they got to Ken Taylor's residence.
Ken Taylor was the real hero of that story, and he was barely even in Argo. Even Tony Mendez, the guy Affleck played in the film, praises him.
I know it's 6 months on, but since nobody else replied to you, it was Canada.
Really enjoyed the content! Keep it up.
Fascinating as always :)
I once worked at a place where someone used the store's own Forklift to remove the entire safe from the building.
I don't believe they were ever caught.
Ok the Philippines have the funniest name ever for a vampire. I don't even know how to spell it properly but hearing you say it so many times I nearly choked on my water laughing.

Its aswang not asswang and it is actually a major fear their, doesn't mean it less funny in English though
gavin banwell Asswang is dickbutt's brother and you can't convince me otherwise.
The Aswang (one s) is a supernatural creature here in the Philippines similar to the Jersey Devil and loves munching on children and babies still inside their mother's wombs.
Sounds like it could get a job with Planned Parenthood.
Great videos!
Dearest Simon, you always have the best & most important videos. 👏🏾 🏆
Can't believe there was no mention of T. E. Lawrence's successful landward attack on Aqaba by way of the Nefud desert, which had been considered by most to be impassable at the time. Shit-house-rat crazy, but it worked.
Simon Whistler...how does it feel to host a series of videos most people watch while on the toilet?!
you shouldn't do that your tablet can catch a virus
That kidney one is really cool and makes a lot of sense. I'm sure with machine learning a really intricate algorithm could maximize the number of successful donations.
Always enjoy your videos! Have a Happy Christmas!
Point of order: "Command module" *NOT* "shuttle". The shuttle program was probably being developed at the time as it's presidential approval was announced during the final Apollo mission (Apollo 15?), but it certainly hadn't even started yet during Apollo 13.
I swear if Apollo 13 is on here I am going to [REDACTED BY O5 COMMAND] Dr Bright.
Every country boy with a broken down pickup truck knows the wonders of duct tape.
It was Jim Lovell in the movie, but not in reality - it was the Command Module pilot Jack Swigert who first said "Houston, we've had a problem"
Not just a reference, but a full entry about us?
Is this happening?
And yes, it is indeed a way of life.
"By Artist" Okay that make sense. He just wanted to display his "art"
The Kidney Swapping is just genius!
As always, a fascinating video. I'd like to nominate one other: "Operation Quicksilver" in World War II, the allies' "ghost army."
Jack Swiggert said those famous words, Lovell and Haise were in the LM at the time of the failure.
You know Simon I'm pretty sure you're the hardest working man on UA-cam
Here are a few more to be mentioned. A family living in the former GDR escaped over the heavily guarded border with a homemade hot air balloon. Three brothers built and homemade hang-glider with an engine on the back. They flew it over the border from GDR to West Germany. The underside of it was decorated with red stars making the border soldiers hesitate to shoot it down.
One of them was left behind (can't remember the reason), but the two others had the balls to fly back with that thing and get him out of there some time after this incident.
Talking about crazy plans that worked out well...!
As a live kidney donor - I really appreciated this video. Thanks!
If they were actually Canadians, those Bloody Mary's would have been Caesar's
My INSTANT reaction when he said Bloody Marys
Bloody Mary’s = yuck, Caesar= yummmm
Argo was entirely a Canadian plan, not a CIA one. That stupid movie got most everything wrong to make themselves look better.
IntegralBif correct
Correct! Another embarrassing Hollywood rewrite of something historical. I'm American but ughhhh America lol
I think the US deserves some blowback for meddling in Iran's elections and colluding with the enemy. Canada should be found guilty of obstruction of justice.
this is a fair statement, but stoning civilians in the street sounds a little extreme
So Simon Whistler got it wrong also. Poor Canada
The story of how they facilitate kidney transplants is really great.
The kidney one was my favorite.
But I've never seen Argo or even knew what it was about. Now I wanna see it.

Splat Cat, the odds of that are 9/10000000 (nine out of ten million)
I love Terry Pratchett. Rest in peace.
Simon is quickly becoming my favorite UA-cam host/personality.
I love it when a plan comes together
Actually, the embassy escape was engineered by the Canadian government, along with some help from the CIA. The American movie crew did the typical thing of taking someone else's accomplishment and writing the movie to make it seem like it was an American accomplishment.
An American *hollywood* accomplishment.
Have you ever heard the phrase "based off a true story"?
What about the British sailing a destroyer into a heavily fortified German port (Navaire) on the coast of France to destroy the only drydock capable of servicing the Tripitz. Although they suffered heavy losses they did succeed!

Actually, fire ships have been in use for hundreds of years, it’s just that they fell out of use due to modern ships being more expensive and shooting smaller explosive rounds from far away is much more effective then ramming one large explosive in.
Saint Nazaire raid AKA operation chariot.
simon i love your channel keep up the hard work!!!!!
4:30 I remember that episode. Aired on Fri June 8th 1984 a week into summer vacation after 4th grade, and the host had to walk in front of the dude (that was paused in the background) and basically say to be continued on Monday. What I never got is why he stopped at $110k. I would have kept going to a few million just to see what they would do when the scoreboard rolled over a few times (and to see if their accountant rolled over as well, they had to get rid of the $ sign already).
Also, how many times did you laugh off-camera saying "Aswang"?
In 1907, White Star Liner SS Suevic ran aground and it got stuck, the operator decided to use dynamites to sever the stuck bow section of the ship and free up the remaining part of the ship. Suevic sailed in reverse, guided by the tugs, made it back to the port.
This one was really interesting. Thanks.
😊 That's exactly what I thought when he said that. 😁
Simon your top tenz are brillant keep up the good stuff
Imagine waiting for Argo and getting The USA instead.
12:10 Um, Apollo XIII was NOT a Shuttle mission. The space shuttle hadn't been invented yet.
I think he meant "shuttle" in the generic sense, as in a vehicle which transports you back and forth between other modes of transportation or destinations. In that sense, the Command Module is a shuttle, as it "shuttled" the astronauts between the Lunar Module and Earth.
That kidney domino plan is so awesome!
Should have shown colour photos of dazzle... the black and white photos are very deceiving as the colours were often very garish and gives a completely different look when viewed this way
It wasn't the shuttle...jeez.
dopeymark i caught that too.
Yep, the Shuttle hadn't been built yet.
But in fairness, the Shuttle has been the only manned spacecraft the US has had since Simon was born (Shuttle - 1981, Simon - 1987.)
That moment when you watch so many videos that you actually develop a decent British accent by listening to Simon.
This comment right here. Yes i feel it lol.

I developed a russian accent similarly
Ah yes. The common British accent. I, too, have started speaking Welsh. 😑
Elk Maiden this made me chuckle.
One of the main purposes of dazzle camouflage was to confuse optical rangefinders. That's why it was still used to an extent during the early parts of WWII but was largely abandoned once most rangefinding was done by radar.

You've got to be kidding me..."asswang"??? Really?😂
Another great video, thank’s for making. Although I can’t lie I have no idea how the last one worked. That one is definitely not recommended for a 3am UA-cam binge. I’ll have to come back to it another time.
I appreciate you saying, "subscribe if you want to", rather than the usual, "don't forget to subscribe". As if the possibility I may not enjoy the video, and not wish to see any more of said person's content, does not exist. Overall, you do have some of the most consistently interesting and well made videos I've seen. Thanks, keep it up.
You admit that “dazzle camouflage” may have had no effect, and may even have had a negative effect on ship defense. So how is it a “crazy plan that actually worked”?
The best we can say about it is that it may have helped some.
There's a canadian children's history book...a fictional diary...called No Safe Harbour about the Halifax explosion. In it the dazzle camoflage is described as something that peaked the interest of young people watching the ships from shore.
Piqued.
Shawn McRoberts And it's been 100 years since that awful day too! Even though I'm not from that part of Canada, I just wanted to send a huge thank you to the people from the US, and especially Boston, for the medical personnel and supplies they sent to help out the people of Halifax! We will never forget what you did for us!
After reading Shawn's comment I looked up the explosion. Fascinating! The US and Boston did help in the aftermath, but the Canadian citizens and government employees were amazing in their initial immediate response! There was no stumbling around or hand wringing. What needed doing was DONE.

#10 Happens in a Swedish comedy from 1986: They rob an IKEA store by getting to the money via the pneumatic tube system (a plot point being that they have to keep the pressure constant in the system, or the alarms will go off).
Maybe they got their inspiration from that movie. ;D
(It's rumored that those movies, witch crazy and elaborated plans, inspired several thief's to use similar plans irl)
