Top 10 of the Biggest “WHAT IF” Scenarios in History

- The world is full of “what ifs?” What if JFK hadn’t decided to go cruising through Dallas in an open-top car? What if Gandhi had never got teed-off with the British Empire? What if we’d been wearing pants that time the cops pulled us over? That’s the nature of things: we can never truly know. But we sure as heck can speculate. And, thankfully, Earth’s long, long history has given us plenty to speculate about.

Rommel when he came back: I’ve been gone for ONE DAY
Lol
@John Smith The more likely scenario would be Rommel pushing his superior Rundstedt for an effort to change government after their retreat from France.
"What if we'd been fully clothed that time the police pulled us over" 😂😂 so unexpected!
WATCH VIDEO WITH CAPTIONS ON! THERE ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE A SURPRISE. THIS ONE AT BEGININNING: "PANTLESS DUI GUY"
Yeah imagine the officer's face! Oh wait you meant him saying that 😮😅
What if Top Tens presenter Simon Whistler swapped lives with Moby the music DJ and nobody noticed.
What if Hollywood stopped rebooting every franchise with new movies that can't equal the old and actually created something new and original.
What if Hollywood stopped sexually assaulting women & made them leads & directors & writers instead?
They are already leads, directors, and writers. But the Hollywood system of oversexualizing women has worked just as well for them as it has for the men in the industry. So they kept their eyes closed to the problem just as much as any man. The Harvey Weinstein scandal has exposed ALL of the Hollywood elite. Not just the men. And it was never like the Weistein scandal exposed anything new. Everyone knows that this has been going on since Hollywood started making movies. That's where the term "casting couch" came from.
+Lilac Lizard Feminist spotted
Hollywood needs to reboot Hollywood.
Just because people didn't speak up until recently doesn't mean they shouldn't speak up now.
What if the Romans hadn't burned down the Library of Alexandria?
There might have been a few more religious stories around, and that's about it. Two of the big misconceptions of the Great Library of Alexandria is that everything written in it was exclusive documents, the other that it contained a large amount of knowledge on technology. Neither are true, the Library was mostly copies of existing works, or works that were copied and distributed elsewhere (such as the Old Testament/Septuagint); and Ptolemaic Egypt was technologically less advanced than Italy, mainland Greece, and Anatolia.
Linden Stromberg nah man we might have more answers about ancient mysteries like the great pyramids.
@@jon7911 I doubt the Greeks of Alexandria would have any information on the Egyptians of Old Kingdom Giza than we do today. By the time the Ptolemaic Kingdom arose, the pyramids were already ancient in their time, over 2000 years old - and the Ptolemies likely had less access to the Old Kingdom Civilization than we do, since we've explored and excavated more of it, seen more of the actual writings of the Old Kingdom than the Greeks had.
Herodotus and other Greeks wrote about Egypt, and circulated it around the Greek world, and much of that has filtered down to us to us today. It's almost inconceivable the Greeks would have confined information on the pyramids exclusively in Alexandria on flammable scrolls.
@@lindenstromberg6859 To your point regarding the extreme age of the Egyptian pyramids compared to Roman and Greek influence in that region, it's difficult for my mind to comprehend that the pyramids were more ancient at that time than "ancient" Rome is to us. It illustrates just how brief and fleeting our lives truly are.
To be fair many historians believe it wasn't a deliberate act, a fire just broke out as they took the city.
The Battle of Teutoburg Forest is HUGE. It is also an interesting story. I really want there to be a big-budget film on it made.
The problem with Hollywood making said film would be the perspective on the events that they'd arbitrarily adopt. They would do much to emphasize with the 'heroic' roman invaders, but when the romans inevitably get thrashed by the 'barbarian' Germanic tribes the film would start to resemble something with a hint of originality, but originality takes effort, so they'd most likely just turn it into a 300 clone.
It would be amazing to see a Teutoberg Forest film from the perspective of the native Germanic tribes, but I doubt hollywood would be all that comfortable humanizing the same barbarian fodder they've been pissing on since they learned how to edit.
Immortan Ruffle I'd prefer one from the POV of the Germanic tribes
The Battle of Carrhae would be cool too
Quintilius Varus! Give me back my legions!

I love your what if videos Simon, your speculations spark great conversations and arguments alike. Great job once again mate!
In Soviet Russia, TopTenz view you.
very interesting video please make a part 2 one day if it's possible :)
I've seen a great majority of these. They're very well done. Kudos, Simon.
If things were different, nothing would be the same. I love alternate history scenarios. Great video.
Now you gotta do a video on ten people who took a holiday at the wrong time.
I concur!
Grandfather was on vacation from
April 1945 till 1950. He worked for
Henry Ford. Go figure.
there was a travelling salesman in Japan during ww2 who travelled to Hiroshima for business when the first nuke was dropped,he survived that and headed back to his hometown of Nagasaki just in time for the second nuke to be dropped there. Strangely though he survived both so he could potentially be called one of the luckiest people who ever lived
I love your videos. No idea if you figured all this out purely through extensive research or research as a historian. Nonetheless, some of your videos have given me fantastic jumping off points to understand larger pictures from. Thank you for doing what you do.
Wow! I was wondering what you were going to put into this episode. It was great! Food for thought.
Really interesting! More alternative history like this, Simon!
What if Stanislav Petrov believed the USSR nuclear warning system in 1983.
Tyler Martin RIGHT?!?! That’s definitely number 1
Don't think I'd be typing this
most of us would not exist and the rest would either be dead or hiding in the remaining bunkers while starving slowly to death.
Wow Tyler, slipped my mind. Absolutely should be #1.
This was the first thing that popped into my mind. And my #2 is a morph of the actual #1 but what if we had taken Bin Laden out in the late 90s we had multiple opportunities to do so.
"Pantless DUI guy." Lol. Oh Simon, you scamp!
One of our vendors at work was describing his trip to the Grand Canyon, northbound on highway 64. The car in front of him began some strange maneuvers that culminated with the car taking off into a meadow and coming to rest. The vendor ran out to see if everybody was okay. A man with no pants emerged from the driver side and a woman with no clothes at all emerged from the passenger side. Seeing they were unhurt, the vendor discretely left.
Great video!
I could watch this channel every night and never get bored. Thank you so much dude.
Please do more of these what ifs
#9 WW1 would have happened anyway, just with different cause. It was a question of *when* not *if.*
Probably still start in the Balkans like Bismarck predicted
Yes right there was already other factors in it, Ferdinand being assassinated didn't "spark" off the war but it contributed. The whole region was unstable.
Dan carlins hardcore history pod cast has many hours of detail as to why ww1 was inevitable. The German invasion plans alone where worked on for years before it started. Germany felt like it was surrounded by potential enemies all with alliances that could be used against them.
Exactly, this channel's fascination with Franz Ferdinand's assassination is getting ridiculous.
No, no, no. At that time monarchies were the government, there was no mixed system like we know today. Many kingdoms were governed by people other than the royals, but decisions were irrevocably bonded to the desires of royals. So what I mean, is that the royals would have found a way to quell disturbances but an assassination means there would have to be a succession situation. So, instead the guy died and his country collapsed immediately. It's not fair to say that the balkans were the only cause, but the case has been made that he was wheat and needed to go.
Yet another deep, thought-provoking video. Thank you for another great video! Number 1 really sticks with me since that one is within my lifetime and has had a profound effect on the world.
I think number one should've been if William the Conquerer hadn't won the Battle of Hastings.
very english centric, i like
Holy Crap!!! YES!!!
And that isn’t just English history, the repercussions, cause and effects would have made their way down through the almost 1000 years and touched almost, if not, every nation on the planet.
I’ve always heard and read from historians that 1066 was the pivotal point of history. Based on the influence the English Empire had on the whole world.
If Harold hadn’t been forced to go north to fight his brother, if there had been even a few days rest before he had to meet William? If so many noble sons weren’t also killed.
On a different note a few years later, what about if the Black ship hadn’t sunk? If Henry I’s son had lived? No war between Stephen and Matilda and no Plantagenets? No Magna Carta?
History and the future always balance on a knife’s edge, and it’s fascinating to think about what if it fell the other way.
I liked your comment solely because you have the TARDIS in your pic. Greetings fellow Whovian. 😘
For ever war in the Northsea...
I would suggest the assassination of Gaius Julius Caesar on the steps of the Roman senate
thinking abt Stalin, it would be interesting to consider how things would have gone down if Trotsky had proceeded Lenin, as he'd wanted
Succeeded Lenin, not PROceeded him
Not much better, Trotsky was fanatic
Watch alternative history hub on youtube it has that what if in detail.
Wow; the world would be that different if "some guys got jumped in a forest over 2000 years ago".
Can you imagine the absolute terror of the Roman ladies when it became apparent the approach of the barbarians hacking their way through the the legions could not be stopped?!
Great video, truly great.
5 years ago. You've come a long way. I've enjoyed watching you grow up 😉
pretty sure 9000 people didnt die on 911....
Worldwide I'm sure they did.
Lots of people died that day.
it was probaly 3k
If you take into account the number of people killed directly due to 9/11 then it is probably 9k that were killed, if you just count those killed by the actual 9/11 attacks it is definitely 3k, whichever way you do the maths it is a terrible amount of victims.
people are still drying related to 9-11
I remember watching 9/11 live on the news just after I’d got home from school that day my mum was telling me that a plane had crashed into a building in America and we watched live as the 2nd plane hit the second tower up to both towers collapsing, just to think that 1 event has changed so much especially travel security etc and gave rise to most of the terrorist activity in the past 16 years
Never did I think on that day watching it live would all that happen as when we tuned in to watch the reporters where still saying it was an accident rather than a terror attack
I was watching an episode of the west wing, where they were dealing with a terrorist attack, it went to an ad break & the news of the towers came on, it went back to the west wing, then it interrupted midscene to return to the towers. The day reality topped the drama of tv writing for me & really blurred the 2!
There would be no norm Mcdonald meme

What if Queen Elizabeth the first of England had an heir and kept the Tudor line going?
They would probably be all too ill from gene problems.
You already have to be careful not to give the ones we've got a paper cut.
what if henry had a boy with catherine, never divorced and remained catholic?
It would have been way too inbred, I'm amazed the royal family is still going personally.

Napoleon made it all the way to Moscow. The problem was Alexander 1st wasn't there. Napoleon left Moscow and set fire to it. He lost 300,000 troops on the way back to France due to the Russian winter and problems with supplies. The vast majority of his losses were not due to combat.
Why didn't napoleon just attack the russians ports and cut them off from supplies from the british?
densealloy correct. However the decision to invade when he did was still the mistake. As well as the incredible mass of land which they can use to fall back, and flank their enemy.
I thought the Russians set Moscow on fire?
ueah, the russian set moscow and all cities from europe to moscow on fire. its called "scorched earth". by the time the french made it there they were short/out of supplies, exhausted, some died to the cold cuz there was no shelter.
so the mistake of attacking russia was still there on napoleon side, or he should have went for lenningrad ( dont know waht it was called back then lol )

I thought you would ask "What if the romans embraced steam power? Like the steam ball.". How much of more advanced would we be?
He already addressed this. This was impossible until a machine was built that could bore repeatedly into metal so that uniform pistons could be made. It is in his The Benefits Of Firearms video.
It was also impossible until The Rights Of Man + The Magna Carta were published. Until then, slavery was thought superior to keep the populace pacified.
Now that was a very entertaining video.
Brilliant video
What if Hitler had been able to go to art school elsewhere instead of trying to get into that exclusive school in Vienna? What if Hitler had been able to go to art school by enrolling in a State University or Community College? #1 What if humans never existed?
Your comment doesn't exist. 😁
@Pauline Gregory No - life on Earth has doomed itself almost from the beginning. Since the rise of multicellular life it has been consuming carbon and taking it to the grave. Mollusks are among the worst, locking up carbon in carbonates, never to be available to life again. Present surface carbon is as little as 6% of what it was in the Carboniferous era, and no more than 20%. Humans are the only organism that has done anything to reverse that trend, and we have hardly made a dent. Even if it causes anthropogenic climate change, increasing our reintroduction of fossil carbon into the surface is the finest and noblest thing we could do for life on Earth. It will only extend the timeline and put off the inevitable, though; at some point there will not be enough surface carbon to support anything as large as an insect.
There would be a miriad of strange and wonderful animals still alive
Brilliant opening gag. Love this show. Well done team 👏

Some important What if's missed out:
1. What is there was no Operation Barbosa?
2. What if no nuclear bombs were invented?
3. What if Japan attacked USSR in place of USA in WW2?
4. What if no oil was discovered in Middle East?
5. What if there was no social media?
Varun what if stanislav petrov allowed the launch of nuclear weapons towards the us
1. Germany would’ve instead consolidated its holdings in the rest of Europe, turning it into a giant fortress, and concentrated its military on taking the Suez Canal and the Middle East. Which would’ve further starved Britain, possibly into capitulation. Instead of a 1944 invasion of Europe, there probably would’ve been exhaustive bombing campaigns on mainland Europe, North Africa and the Middle East that would’ve put off mainland invasion until the late 1940s, left very little of Europe (or Europeans) intact and the war wouldn’t have ended until around 1950. If nuclear bombs were used, Europe would’ve likely been saturated in an effort to weaken the German military sufficiently enough to successfully invade Europe.
2. Then WWII would’ve likely drug into the 1950s before Japan was successfully conquered, as they had no intention of surrendering. The Japanese government had weaponized its citizens and had the civilian populace prepared to fight to the last man, woman and child. Operation Downfall would’ve ended in millions of casualties, and left Japan divided like Germany was. If coupled with your number 1 what if, then WWII probably would’ve ended in a stalemate/negotiated armistice in the 1950s.
3. Then Russia would’ve fallen. Russia barely stopped Barbarossa. Barbarossa failed due to poor German leadership from high command, namely Hitler micromanaging too much. Russia wouldn’t’ve been able to handle an invasion on two fronts
4. Then there probably would be no western influence or unrest in the Middle East
5. The world wouldn’t be so over informed on everything.
Engine33Truck eh I’d give them til late 1946 early 47 just because the ussr was going to invade them
Fistof Heavens historically, yes. But his “what ifs” are exactly that, what ifs. If taken linearly, his what if if Barbarossa not happening, Russia would’ve likely stayed out of the war. Stalin had no intentions on engaging the Japanese. He finally decided to invade because he kept his word: when begged by Roosevelt and Churchill for help in the Pacific, Stalin promised that he would help when his military had defeated the German threat. Had Barbarossa not happened, thus Stalin staying out of the war, it’s very likely Roosevelt and Churchill would never have turned to him for help. And if they did, he probably would’ve turned them down. That’s where I was getting at.
If #3 happened, America would have probably finished the atom bomb before the war in Europe was over, meaning the first city nuked would have been in Germany.
Personally I don't think we (USA) would have used it against a European country.
@@KS-PNW It was build to be dropped over germany. They only dropped it (and later the 2nd) because germany already surrendered at the time the first bomb finished.
Love all of These what-ifs. I thrive on them.
Very interesting stuff
My aunt would still be alive if #1 never happened. I wouldn't spend 8 years in the submarine fleet either.
I’m surprised they didn’t cover the scenario of the atomic bombs never being dropped on Japan.
I honestly think that could be a video in itself
I've seen a video on that, I think it may have even been from these guys. Is this part of a series?
If they werent dropped the war could've probably gone on til 1949, before the bombings the Japanese had already made it clear that they were not going to surrender any time soon.
Why? It would’ve been a longer war with more deaths and probably more destruction of the Japanese Home Islands, which would cripple japan more and make a slower recovery. While the US population would hold more of a resentment towards Japanese people.
It probably wouldn't have changed the outcome of the war. But the invasion of Japan would have been a long and extremely bloody fight. And Japan as we know it today probably wouldn't exist.
Prime content, my dude. 🤙

Should JFK not died the US likely wouldn't have escalated the Vietnam War like it did under Johnson but on the flip side JFK wasn't nearly as aggressive as Johnson on domestic civil rights policies so that would've taken longer.

What if the Brits defeated the Americans during the war of 1812?
+nick oakley
If the British were able to send more soldiers and ships then it might have been possible, the war ended in a stalemate though.
Try telling that to the Canadians. "Nope. DC was burned. Once your capitol is burned, you lose."
"Not always. Napoleon technically captured Moscow, but the Russians didn't lose."
"I said, 'Once your capitol is burned, you lose.' What part of that confuses you?"
+foxymetroid all invasions of Canada were repulsed however all of the invasions into America were also repulsed as well that is why it's a stalemate.
Not much different. Brits wouldn't control U.S.A. They would just keep impressing U.S. citizens and maybe get some trade concessions. In the end, the British won the war. The only possible major change in the war was the possibility of the U.S. incorporating Canada. They didn't, so the Brits won. There was no major downside for the U.S. if they lost.
The Americans burned York first.
How come you forgot the most basic question "What if Adam and Eve would not have eaten that apple?"
Then they would have got to where we are now, where knowledge is obsolete & "fake news" & "alternative facts" rule, much faster

Already done. Read C.S. Lewis' Out Of The Silent Planet.
Sadab Siddique or what if Adam and Eve had.....existed at all? First off, that’d be a LOT of inbreeding!
"Jim Talbott - Sadab Siddique or what if Adam and Eve had.....existed at all? First off, that’d be a LOT of inbreeding!"
So? Nothing wrong with that. Inbreeding is immoral because our accumulation of mutations in our chromosomes causes birth defects. Adam and Eve had perfect chromosomes. So, inbreeding was not a problem. It wasn't until after the flood and the elimination of the hydrosphere that had been protecting us that UV rays from the sun starting mutating our chromosomes, including our germ cells that we pass on to future generations. Notice how the life span went from 900+ years before the flood to a gradual decrease down to 70 years due to the increasing number of mutations in our chromosomes.
You should learn some science so you don't look like a clown when you post on UA-cam. Btw, do you wear a red rubber nose when you post? That is my favorite part of clowns, although the oversized shoes look funny, too.

Great video, as always.
One scenario that I'd suggest: What if Churchill had been unable to convince the British people that they could fight off the Nazis? In early 1940, after the fall of France, most people thought that Britain should sign an a truce with Germany to avoid being invaded. Churchill had the confidence and the persuasive tools ("We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds... We shall never surrender.") to convince Britons that they should carry on. If that had not happened, WWII would have had a much different outcome, as I don't know how the remaining western allies, including the U.S. (assuming they still entered the war in 1941) could have carried on fighting the Germans without the British Isles as a base for the bombing campaign and the eventual re-taking of the Continent. Without Britain still in the war, the Germans could have concentrated all their resources against the Soviet Union and would have had a much better chance of succeeding. The U.S. would have focused all their efforts against the Japanese and I don't think they would have had much incentive to conduct a long-range war again Germany. Taking the scenario further, the U.S. and Mexico were not exactly best of friends before WWII, so I don't think it's too far of a stretch to think that Mexico may have been persuaded to ally itself with Germany and then together attack the U.S. directly from its southern border.
Occupying the United states mainland would be impossible. Littlarly a rifle behind every blade of grass. And choosing to attack from Mexico means going through Texas.....I want you to think about that for a minute. Do you think texans are just gonna let em roll on through
Is this how history works..? A brittish person telling the world that brittain defeted napoleon. There was infact a coalition.
Nice change from America telling the world THEY defeated everyone!
It is in fact exactly how history works. The victors write the histories, and once Napoleon was shut down the British Empire was unequaled in might and got to dictate the history for quite some time. It's only with the lens of centuries past that we even begin to tell the real story.
Simon said the British did not defeat Napoleon, that it was because he invaded Russia.
Wellington was in fact losing until about 4 p.m. the Poles turned up.
What if Bernie Sanders won the Democratic nomination? what if Russia didn't interfere with the election? What If Abraham Lincoln had not been assassinated? what if JFK was assassinated?
Just spit balling ideas for future episodes in this series
Umm.... JFK WAS assassinated and the Russians had no effect at all on our election (although they did help the Clinton's bank accounts).
John Kennedy was a scandle away from leaving office in disgrace.
The Russians didn't have any influence on the election.
Bernie Sanders would've lost by a slightly wider margin than Hillary.
If Bernie Sanders won the nomination, Trump would have won by a Reaganesque landslide. Sanders might have carried California and Vermont but Trump would have carried the other 48 states.
What if you weren't a hack leftist troll?
Sanders couldn't win it was rigged. Someone mentioned that during his campaign...
Brilliant
In ANY language, I still hear the following:
"I give you ONE job to do........"
What If Donald trump was president. Oh wait he already is
It's because some stupid time traveller stepped on a butterfly in the Cretaceous, and created this bizarre alternative reality...
Or a real nightmare scenario, what if Hillary Clinton had won the election.
Then the GOP would be screaming for an investigation.
Lol what if Hillary was humble and actually visited Wisconsin once.
Desr Simon, You have got to stop and reconcider your constant repeating of the fiction that Russia would have beeten Germany without US involvement in the war. First, the wouldbe historians (mostly journalists disguised as historians), who have propagated the myth have failed to take into account the Russian supply chain: one that cryticly included England and the U.S.. And while arguably Englend's role in this was the greater of the two, Englend herself would have fallen without U.S. support at the time. Thus, while stronger than Hitler anticipated, Russia was absolutely defeatable by the Germans, even under the poor leadership of Hitler. Ps. also, Napolian was largly defeated by Typhus, rather than what proved to be the relatively mild winter season. I mention this well documented case only to highlight the folly of narrative mythically driven history. Measuring the strength of Stalin's new mechanized Army without taking into account from whence that strength was derived is a little like imagining that Napoleon actually had 400,000 troops when he tried to enter Moscow. But as we all know, thanks to the spread of typhus Napoleon had nothing of the sort.
"You're welcome" I see what you did there ;)
What if Budica hadn't fought the battle of Watling Street?
She and her army would have survived to continue her guerilla tactics against the Romans, Nero would have ordered Suetonius to withdraw from Britain, the northern border of the Roman Empire would have been the English Channel and Simon would be talking to us in something akin to Welsh.
I don't always agree with You, but I am always educated and for that i bow deeply with respect for these video's. I hope to argue with you in person some day, but i doubt it. Thank You for all You do for Us.
Great video, I wonder what would the world look like if the Spartans didn’t go to the pass at Thermopylae and the Greeks had lost at Marathon?
Number eleven: a dude from Spain named Simón Silvano would have tons of channels in UA-cam among them: Biográfico, Geográfico, Hoy descubrí qué, Los 10 Principales, Megaproyectos, Proyectos Alternos, among others
