Sure the notes were replaced with similar ones, just because its a similar note dosen't mean it won't change the entire composition or its performance. He denied any changes were made, now hes admitting it but were supposed to take his word on the effect the changes had on the composition? When its obvious to everyone changes were made.

I just purchased a refill bottle that was born in July 2021 and the liquid is dark orange in color. Can’t speak to smell/longevity because I’ve never used the original before.

Not a lie 😮I have the old black bottle from when it first came out and several new ones in the white bottle and the travels as well as samples .. it’s not “Bull “I can send you photos. Exact same colour as the original after a while !!! Exact same dark red. I keep my frags away from light. It still turned dark red ! Same with all the samples I have from a year ago and my travel as well which gets no light. I don’t understand why you keep saying that. ????
This fragrance was butchered by Estee Lauder. When sales go up, quality goes down! Thank you for putting things right!

I also have both. My new version is turning dark red when it started a translucent pink salmon color.
I own an old black bottle and a new white bottle from 2020. Literally the EXACT same scent.
Get over yourself. It’s a literal bottle of scented alcohol.
@Maria You are absolutely right. Many years ago, I was at an event hosted by Kilian and he warned me not to spray the original scent directly onto my white dress. The juice was a deep red.

I heard the same from an interview given by Killian, where he mentioned that it's color will change. Esteelauder and LVMH are basically screwing up the perfume industry. Lots of niche houses are losing their respect after being purchased by these companies.

Estée Lauder is a brand killer. They acquire great brands and immediately start to destroy their integrity. Jo Malone is also a victim and I know that her scents pre Lauder were better quality. It’s a shame.
Trust your nose. I found a 2017 refill recently and the fragrance (newly opened) lasts on my skin for almost 24 hours and I could still smell it from arm's length. The new travel spray I bought from Sephora (which I subsequently returned) lasted about 2 hours and had really weak projection.

@@JuicyJuice1313Its difficult, but still possible. A few weeks ago I was able to purchase a black bottle with the old formula and its coffret, bottled in 2015, in a second hand market website. Old packaging, brand new, never used. Man, the color juice is blood red. It’s just mind blowing. I’m gonna treasure this one, store it away and never use.
Kilian once commented or replied on of my posts admitting that small changes had to be made to most of their fragrances, so they confirmed the reformulations themselves before (they added that the scent didn't change of course). Edit: It was because of IFRA Lily of the Valley regulations

I do find it disheartening how a lot of brands I used to like have been taken over by these conglomerates and reformulated. Or they do a dozen flankers, cut the original line and start the modern interpretations that all for the most part, suck; and don’t last long. But they still charge the same or more. It’s enough to make me not want to purchase certain brands anymore. Like Gucci, YSL, ck, rl, etc. I’ve never owned a Killian though.
Its not just the fragrance industry.. every other industry is owned by 2-3 bigger companies.. the car industry, the battery industry, the soft drinks industry, the fashion industry, cereals, toothpaste! etc etc.. you see many brands and logos, but at the very top, they’re all owned by the same parent companies..

All people want is transparency and honesty about the most critical important aspects of the things they're involving themselves in or financially supporting. I'm with you on this one.
I love how fired up you are about the subject and how companies continually lower their standard of quality while increasing their prices.
I’ve only ever bought one Kylian (Straight to Heaven) and while the bottle itself is nice I was completely disappointed in the overall presentation and completely shocked at the lack of performance. I mean I literally sprayed myself 10 times and within 20 minutes I couldn’t smell it anymore so I sprayed myself 15 more times and again within 20 to 30 minutes I couldn’t smell anything. I’m pretty sure it’s not a fake because I got it from Nordstrom. That was the first and last Kylian That I will buy.

Quality control is not a thing anymore. Food, electronics, clothing, and fragrance... I've reordered three niche fragrances in the last 12 months that are noticeably different than the purchased originals. The same is especially true with clone houses. I don't know if it is technically reformulation as much as less stable components, cutting cost and employee turnover. But I'm fairly certain that producers don't really give a damn as long as people keep buying.
I'm thinking that's why covid times made people claim so many reforms when formula codes didn't change. Bad quality control from pressure on companies

Why didn’t you compare the scent new and old, initial notes and base hours later? Longevity as well.
I purchased the mini size that comes with 4 0.25 bottles a year ago. They stay in the box it came in, the color arrived yellow orange and is a bit darker now but nowhere near red and it smells exactly the same as it did when it arrived despite the color oxidizing or whatever is happening. I wish I had an original bottle to compare it to.
My wife has worked for Killian in the past at Harvey Nichols and has 'Don't be Shy' she has the venician black glass bottle with the magnetic top and also a refill unopened she has them in a cabinet in the dark and both have gone from the salmon colour to the dark red and still smells amazing.
If you really want to know the exact difference between the two, you could send two samples to a lab that features GC/MS (gas chromatography and mass spectrometry) to identify which exact molecules are present and how much. Surely price is a question though, aswell as analyzing the data. However it would give you exact knowledge, instead of vague speculations.

My bottle is also the the same color as your refill bottle. I bought my Love Don’t be Shy in 2012 and I specifically rember thinking wow the juice so dark will it stain my clothes? It was the dark, reddish orange back then, and it is the same color now. AND I keep my perfume completely out of light. It will be a sad good bye when mine runs out because I am not going to buy the reformulated one.

Agreed. It is not our responsibility to wait for it to be fermented considering the amount of money we paid for. So whether their excuses are lies or not, I am not buying it.
I have always heard that direct sunlight is really bad for your fragrance and you should never let your fragrances be hit by sunlight or any other heat source either.

I bought the refill a while back straight from Killian, it came dark! When I look on sephora at LDBS, i thought i was crazy.
I bought mine in 2019 and the colour did change in my bottle. I get the colour is different, but is the scent weaker because it is lighter coloured? or is mind playing tricks because it is lighter?
Olfactory memory, our strongest sense that is tied to memory .It doesn't deserve the hype now, like it once did. Smells and performs like an EDT flanker at best now .

Great work Sebastian, these fanboys and fangirls really needed that reality check. The rumours that circulate on fragrances really be driving folk man. All the talk of reformulated and being discontinued just end up in panic buying and reselling at ridiculous prices

Should the true test be the scent itself? Not necessarily solely on the color? I've experienced some fragrances with slightly different colors but the scent is the same.

I'll say two... that any fragrance can get enough compliments to make a video about, never mind a top 10, and certain reviewers' subscriber counts (not you). There are a lot of half truths and lies out there
I have done compliments videos in the past but with covid I rarely do get compliments but then again I get a few here and there because I do wear more sprays than the average person.
There are many misleading issues around reformulations. I have run into many vintage vs current frags that are not even 'kissing cousins' to each other.
Even with factoring time as having affected the vintages, the differences are strongly apparent.

Compliment videos is probably a bad example, it's just frustration at what fragcomm has become compared to the fragcomm I fell for. Most fragrance videos on UA-cam are just infomercials now. The big channels are unwatchable if you're actually passionate about fragrance, you and Ashton are the only two big channels I watch
Crazy question, but could they have just change the manufacture who provides them with their dye Maybe the dye formula changed and not necessarily the entire fragrance formula?
30 seconds in and I already knew what fragrances it was about lol. Kilian reformulated so many of their fragrances, all got diluted.
I haven’t used my perfume since working at home during the pandemic. I opened my bottle today and the liquid does look darker. Dark enough that I’ve called the company and sought out answers online. I was going to throw it away for concerns that it’s gone bad. Thanks for the information and now I know it’s not my imagination.

A few months ago I bought Moonlight in Heaven at a Kilian’s boutique in Harrods and they gave me some samples which included LDBS in that deep crimson color as the vintage one you have. After a week, I bought a bottle of it. Unboxed it and to my dismay, the juice color was yellow. Far lighter than the juice you have of the 2020 batch. They smelled different, and I dont see how this yellow juice I have could ever turn red as its logical darkening progression would lead to a darker orange solution rather than red..

Is the argument that the perfume has been dyed and that it darkens as the alcohol evaporates over time? I know that I've experienced something similar with SJP's Stash. Plus my old bottle of Tone Indeterminee started off light brown and now is dark purple (5 years later). Smells better than ever though. 😄 I've heard that colour change can happen with vanillin sometimes. I dunno.
I can tell this was your favorite fragrance and I agree 100% Sebastian. It's heartbreaking when my favorites get reformulated or diluted. Plus the lies.. Therfore I understand exactly where you're coming from.
Well, I gifted it to me sister, and I have to admit, I expected her to smell strong but no, it was light, and I was kind of disappointed. As a chemist I can tell you that you need to compare them in the same bottle type so that you are looking through the same length of liquid (Beer-Lambert law). Unless you do that, we can't tell for sure. I'm not saying you are wrong, just that's the only way to compare.
We're not comparing a travel-atomizer to an aquarium tank at Sea World.

Performance should speak for itself. If the +1 year old full bottle performs worse than the 8 year old juice, that's a clear sign the formulation is weaker. The initial performance boost from maceration happens in the first 3 months. After that the performance is at its best, and will only degrade over time under exposure to sunlight and heat.
Not every perfume works like that. No 5 loves and needs the sun to mature properly
@@callmevil Really? UV light doesn't boost maceration, it weakens the volatile top notes. This is why fragrances have chemical sunblock. Heat does boost the initial maceration, but after the initial boost it also degrades performance. Perfumes are always stored in fridges long-term. They don't just keep getting more nuclear the more sunlight and heat they get.

To say it won't change color at all with age is to be completely ignorant. Also, no-one says you have to wait for it to change color, they are just saying it does change.
Wouldn’t the sun turn the fragrance? I would never put my fragrance in the sun and risk the smell for the colour .

Great vid Sebastian but for years we are told keep your fragrances out of direct sunlight always, maybe it will change color but by god it will destroy the scent profile for sure .really interested in your experiment let’s see the proof of the pudding 👍
Sticking with this topic. DHI and DHP 2020 have a noticeably different color than the previous formations. But when compared, to me at least, there isn't much of a difference in the actual smell. Is this just Dior doing a better job getting the new formulas very close to the previous ones or something else? And in general, do you think that fragrances don't change color over time?
That's cause of age. They still list the same colourant, which is a legal requirement.
I have pictures of my DHI in 2018 and it's as light as the new 2020 but in this Kilian's case, it's not age
It's called masceration certain ones do but they have naturals in them..a full syn aromatics won't change color and they have u.v stabilizers put in formulations

I recently purchased this perfume without smelling first. I’m SO GLAD I didn’t buy a big bottle, I bought the travel size. I’ve got to say I don’t know what the big deal is. It wasn’t a love at first sniff for me. I don’t see what the big deal is - I’ve smelled better ones. For example Frangipani by Ormonde Jayne is AMAZING!!! That one I bought a big bottle of & I can spray it all day.
I just got my second bottle of LDBS as my first bottle is almost done, both came in white bottles (so after the reformulation). My first bottle’s juice looks exactly like yours, pale pink or peach as you described it BUT my second bottle that just arrived today looks EXACTLY like the color of the old formula. I wish i could add pictures here. I’m so confused?? The first one i bought was from Kilian & the second bottle (the darker juice) from bloomingdales so i know none of them are fake! Why are they two different colors!
Also debunks other people’s theory that it goes darker, as my older one is still pale after 9 months.

Remember when buying a FB meant getting the perfume bottle in a lacquered box with a key? The Love that I have is dark in color, but I definitely purchased this way prior to 2018.

Great video Sebastian! I have zero experience with this house. I have two fragrances that have changed color by time and they are Vivienne Westwood’s Mon Boudoir and Prince 3121. They are both beast modes, they were before and still. So in reality I cannot say that they have become more stronger because the color has become greyer on the Prince one and slightly darker on the VWestood fragrance.
i got lucky i purchased a bottle (in black color) and the large 8 oz bottle before the reformulation, i had no idea it was being changed. i still have not used either yet bc i bought the white bottle not aware it was reformulated so i will be using that up and saving the original bottles i have.
I was a HUGE fan of Chance by Chanel for years. I had the original formula when it was first released and had it for years and was very conservative with his much I used it. Well, obviously that only lasts so long and I went to purchase again and refused to buy the newly bottled version as it was NOT EVEN CLOSE to the original scent.
I have a suggestion for an advent calendar of sent for the holidays. Love your channel.
I assume people think the alcohol dilutes and as the alcohol evaporates, the "residu" becomes less and less diluted, thus darker?
Intoxicated was going to be my next purchase. Does anyone have opinions on the performance? Is it worth the money? I tried a sample at the beginnings the year and loved it. Now I’m second guessing a Kilian purchase.
Average performance of all Kilians Ive tested including Intoxicated. It doesn't jump off your skin, more like a private scent bubble.
I’m laughing because I own this perfume and I noticed this for myself and actually questioned my sanity. I carry a travel sized bottle with me everywhere of Love don’t be shy, and one day I noticed something strange. I questioned myself whether or not the perfume would usually come out dark pink on my skin As i had never noticed it before. Its not a lie. :)

I think it’s sweeter now… and it’s leaning more towards mass marketed appealing scents now that Esteé Lauder owns the brand. But still a great scent. Glad I bought a new one.

Sebastian. The original juice in the big bottle really should be put into a smaller, exact same bottle if you want a true side by side comparison. Just a suggestion. The more juice you have to look through (the more juice light has to travel thru to your eyes) the darker it should look.
As a quiet fan boy of yours and of Kilian I have to comment on this is one. It is not the same, it definitely is not, no matter how many times we've tried them together, the colour, they aren't the same. I don't mind the newer one and kind of have to deal with it cos it's all we can get now. But I'm with you we all know its EL we all know what they do... Kilians ethos was to create "luxury" them new refills are like something you'd pick up off the market. I do imagine Kilian doing a Jo Malone one day, well part of me hopes he does. I get EL want to make lots of money but it's an insult to us all to buy "luxury" brands then completely cheapen them. It is my favourite brand but even I'm losing my love for them. Anyways keep being you 🙂
Ceb, the same sh*t with bentley for men intense old bottle has cognac colour, and 2018-2019 has lighter almost pink, buth 2021 batch has again cognac colour😀
Gosh, how peculiar! I would NEVER risk putting any of my fragrances onto a sunny window sill. Unless it was all part of a new gimmicky brand's shtick...how bizarre. Thanks for letting it rip here. All very interesting to hear and see. I did notice that the colour of the juice in your actual fragrance spray bottle was ALSO totally different to the other two bottles. I'm wondering what unstable chemical in the fluid might be causing these changes.
The original fragrance was red. It was meant to fit its name.
Fragrances with vanilla will change color over years when its real vanilla in it.

How much can you love a smell top pay this much and not last for 8 9 hours at least...estee Lauder is the cancer of the fragrance industry what they did here they made to other good fragrance brand they own! I used to be more into fragrances, but now I just use the 300-400 full bottles I have left and enjoy them and very rarely buy new stuff. This video proves, that my interest in perfumes is simply not on the level of Sebatian and others. Creed have made changes to their juice for years with reformulations here and there. I can't see the news in this - so a By Killian has been reformaluted and some fools with too much time on their hands claim the opposite....come on, man. I have a small sample that is somewhere between these two colors and it stained my shirt even when I sprayed it from far away so the deeper juice is like 👀🥲 I feel like my sample may have been from the before times since it was quite deep but not quite as red. I’m new to this btw.
But that’s neither here nor there. I totally get it - it’s the principle! If they reformulated they need to be honest! If I was an OG fan, I’d be ok with a color change *IF* it didn’t affect the longevity of the fragrance, but saying there’s no difference when there clearly is.. yikes.
That's why I always watch your reviews, Sebastian. You don't gave two hoots regardless of brands you are talking about! You just speak the truth which is what we the consumers deserved from the brands in the first place. Double thumbs up, the Perfume Guy! 👍👍
Again? Why coming back again and again on this specific fragrance while so many others are reformulated ?
1. Because unlike some other brands, Kilian Hennessy came out to announce that it has never been reformulated.
2. Lie from the brands is unethical.
3. Sebastian made this video again to prove the perfume’s colour-changing excuse/assumption from the brand.
I am soooo disappointed! I recently bought the new year holiday selection edition that just came out a couple of weeks ago and the color is even lighter! It seems to be lighter than the 2023 special blend. I have the feeling Love has been reformulated again :(

Great video Sebastian! It makes me so mad to spend hundreds of dollars or euros on a bottle only to find out you've been tricked into buying an inferior, reformulated product. Companies should be called out for Shrink-flation. I don't own the current LDBS but I've had it happen with some other brands, and it's even more insulting to expect a customer to jump through ridiculous hoops to achieve the product you want. Leave your juice out in sun? Wtf! I think a little transparency goes a long way and I would understand if ingredients were no longer accessible and they had to make changes, but this really rubs me the wrong way. I'm already a little bugged by Killian because the last bottle I bought was advertised as the black bottle with the nice wooden box they used to, but a white bottle with a cheap cardboard box arrived.
