I saw the same tweet and thought to myself this dude is either way out of touch or just wants to flex because he is a actual racecar driver and has the means to afford/write off such an expensive rig. Gate keeping isn’t good for the community and we all should really do everything we can to be inclusive of people who have interest in the hobby.

I started simracing 12 years ago with a Logitech Driving Force GT on a wheel stand, sitting on a couch, in Gran Turismo 5. Then upgraded to a G29, then a Thrustmaster T300, then a Thrustmaster T818, and this week my Simagic Alpha U arrived. I have also ditched the console and moved to PC, into iRacing and Assetto Corsa. Every wheel and every game or sim i was playing at any given time of my simracing "journey" was amazing and super fun. I love playing iRacing on a top of the range, multi thousand euro rig, but 10 years ago, 11 year old me thought that playing WRC 5 and GT5 on the PS3 with a Driving Force GT was the best thing ever. I also used the G29 in my first 1 or 2 years of iRacing and it was awesome.
I think the best way to look into sim racing is that the best equipment is the one you own. As long as you are having fun with it, then it is the perfect rig for you.

    • @SRS13Rastus
      @SRS13Rastus 29 днів тому +2

Couldn't agree more and I had practically the same path DFGT, G27, T300RS GTE then my current CSL DD with V3 pedals.
The only downside to to the geared wheels is the darn NOISE of the things, other than that they worked and I was able to be competitive with players on high end gear.
My biggest problem with logitech in general is they flogged the G25 for essentially 18 years with ever increasing prices for very little MEANINGFUL improvement and some improvements came with hidden costs..
i,e, the DFGT had 2.4nm peak torque whilst the G25 onwards dropped this to 2.1nm because they switched from flat faced to helical gearing, the flat faced gear teeth were much wider and had greater strength, whilst the helical gears were much thinner but had the advantage of tighter tolerances, yeah it wasn't a huge difference but it WAS noticeable and disappointing at the time.
I personally suggest if players are on a tight budget and couldn't possibly afford a direct drive then seriously look at the 3.4nm T300 but go 2nd hand as they can be found dirt cheap vs new from TM e.g. T300RS GTE £379-469 or worse £599 for the TGT 2 whilst the T300RS GTE can be found on Ebay for £130 upwards. ESPECIALLY as the Cammus C5 DD starts at £249!
With the saving you could afford a 3 pedal set with loadcell brake and STILL be cheaper like the Thrustmaster T-LCM's (£56+ on Ebay) or Fanatec CSL elite LC (£100+ on ebay)..
If you've got enough to buy the T300 brand new then the Cammus C5 and either pedal set works out cheaper with ~50% stronger FFB and nigh on silent operation as well, making it a total no brainer imo.
Of course there is the issue of having to plug the pedals in separately which iirc can't be done on console though there are adapters out there to allow cross compatibility but they tend to be expensive.. Plus at least the T-LCM's CAN be plugged into the T300 base and are fully compatible

This is why I stick to console. Simply because I can't justify spending my money on a full PC rig, iRacing subscription etc when I have a mortgage to pay and a family to feed.
I can stick with ACC and enjoy a sim experience on the hardware and wheel I already own whenever I get the time to play.
Throw in PSVR2 and GT7 and even racing in Sport mode in VR scratches a racing itch even if it's hardly realistic racing.

    Excellent analysis!
I've been sim racing since 1994. Equipment should always be placed in context: where the player is (just starting, looking to upgrade, etc.), budgetary constraints, current skill set and available space.
Along the way it always comes down to one thing: is the player having fun - ? Is the experience enjoyable - ?
Therefore, the type / brand of equipment being used really doesn't matter.
Sim racing is a solitary hobby regardless of the fact that we race online with others; they are strangers even though we might know a few people in a league as 'online friends'. However, social media has allowed a vocal minority the ability to make ridiculous statements as discussed in the video.
That statement if expressed in a public space among a group of fellow hobbyists would be quickly derided and the person would be subject to ridicule.
Unfortunately, today. there are no real consequences for these types of statements and the people who make them know that.

In my opinion it's a Bellcurve - On the X axis you have the amount of money spent, and on the Y axis you have the actual driver skill/ability
At the very low end, you have people on G27s who put heaps of hours in and can objectively drive well (I was one of them, spent 8yrs on G27 and G920 and was regularly top 100 in the world on Dirt Rally 2.0, and consistently placing high on ACC). The people at the low end of the graph can still be good, but theyre often held back by the cheap gear. Not many "very good" drivers here.
In the middle of the graph you have the average "serious" simracer who has spent around 1-2k getting their rig up to scratch (me now, with direct drive and much better peripherals) - these people on average take things seriously and get very good very quickly because their rig is more precise and realistic.
At the top end of the graph you have the people who spent 15k on their rigs, who probably do drive better than your average joe on a G27 or Thrustmaster TMX, however some of the people up here have "all of the gear and no idea" - meaning they've too quickly compensated for a lack of seat time and experience with buying the best tools of the trade.
Unfortunately sim racing, to a degree, is pay-to-win. Like any other hobby involving 4 wheels and an engine, it gets expensive, BUT, you can very easily manage where those funds are going to ensure you're getting a good balance of precise and well-performing gear, with accessibility and willingness towards seat time.
Anyone can be serious about it, and Anyone can be good on any kind of gear with enough practice and passion - money does help a bit, though it rarely ever trumps sheer experience.

Tbh to me there are two separate hobbies to sim racing.
There is having fun playing the games themselves and improving your skills.
Then there is also the fun of building your simulator to your liking. Getting the gear you like the most and putting it exactly where you want it. Finding out about all the little things you can add to better convince yourself that you are in an actual race car. Trying different display, audio and haptic options to see what makes it feel more realistic and what is a gimmick. I’ve had just as much fun, enjoyment and satisfaction out of building my simulator over the past 5 years as I’ve had racing with it. Of course I’ve spent way more time actually racing but the time I’ve put into making custom brackets, parts and tweaking things to my liking has been just as enjoyable as the racing itself. Like a massive Lego set the enjoyment is as much in building as it is with playing with the final product.
It’s just very important that people don’t think that the barrier to entry of sim racing is too high. I started with a G920 on a wood wheel stand I made. Then a custom wood rig I designed and built. Then finally investing in more and more aluminum profile over time until finally now there is no wood left. Only aluminum, steel and carbon fibre.
It’s feels way more convincing now than it did with just a humble G920 but tbh there isn’t too much difference in how much fun the racing is. It is way better and way more realistic but not necessarily that much more fun.
Like watching a movie at home vs the movie theatre. The theatre is a much more significant and immersive experience but the movie it’s still the same movie if you watch it at home.

I've had my T500RS from new for nearly a decade and have had absolutely 0 issues with it in terms of competitive races, drifting, learning new skills etc, and have very rarely wished I could upgrade to something "more expensive". I've only recently considered upgrading to a DD due to moving into a new place, and having a bit more money for things like that, but you can absolutely be competitive and still have a lot of fun with an older/lower end rig. I know some people who are still using the Logitech G wheels and are VERY fast. I can see the argument that higher end rigs do allow you to progress at a slightly better rate if you're new to sim stuff, however anyone passionate about getting into sim racing should know that it's all about persistence and training as you mentioned in the vid. If you put in enough time, you can be faster than someone with a 30k+ rig in a £300 rig 😄 Same argument as real life racing when you think about it - A fast car doesn't always mean faster driver. You'll always progress and learn better by starting out slow.

    • @110t0m

I'd also like to mention that lower end wheels also still give a great opportunity to learn "real life car control", if that's something people are interested in when starting to sim race. Even though the T500RS lacks A LOT these days compared to modern/DD wheels, I've absolutely been able to translate sim skill to real life cars, which to me is exactly what I wanted when I first bought my rig.

I started on a G25 that I loaned from a friend who didn't use it, when I understood that I was into it, I got myself used T300 and slowly, over a year, transitioned to what I have now (Fanatec DD Pro 8NM with two wheels, CLS Elite V1 pedals and VR).
Over a year I had a few different pedals did some modifications to them like adding spring for CSL LC and spring to a throttle, now I'm waiting for the hall sensor and gas spring mod for Elite V1.
My point is expensive gear doesn't often mean you are better than others and when someone starts to brag about how expensive and cool setup they have, I think that they just want some recognition as they are lonely.
The expensive gear will not make you better if you are bad at it, but it can make you better if you mastered the basics :) Although I think there is a limit to how much better the better gear can make you and you still can be really good with cheaper gear as long as it ticks all your boxes :)

lol you really don’t know how much money it costs for any real track time do you? The $3000 total I’ve spent on my sim wouldn’t even buy me a set of tires and brakes that my car would go through in a day of hard track time. Real racing drivers that can afford to compete in racing series that cost $250,000 a year still have and use simulators on a regular basis because track time is too expensive.
Yes you can have just as much fun on a G29 as on a multi thousand dollar set up but if you want the most realistic option that won’t bankrupt you, a high end sim rig is the way to go.

Absolutely right RCS, it's about having fun and trying different aspects that SIM racing has to offer.
Side note, I would really like to see Gran Tourismo / Polyphony actually make a driving simulator i.e driving, rather than just a game with race tracks. Or have both elements but emphasis on the driving on roads, traffic etc.

I bought, repaired, and modded a broken T300 for as cheap as I could manage, and reused the table clamp and pedals from my old TMX Pro. It's been (mostly) everything I want, save for the fact that it's a bit weak and the detail's a bit dulled out. I have looked on and off at a Moza R5 setup, but I recognize that the T300 is close enough that it's not worth it unless I build up more money than I care to save. I don't even use it terribly often anymore, so that further reduces my pull towards getting something better.
If you're at least mostly happy with your wheel and you're able to be competitive enough with it to satisfy yourself, then you do you, don't bother with wasting the money.

The problem with the tweet is his conflating two very different things. Simulators designed for professional training (racing, flying, etc) aren’t the same thing as “sim racing” which is meant to give non professional racers an experience that simulates what it’s like to race. Simulating or approximating the real thing for entertainment isn’t the same as simulation designed to train for real world application, although there can certainly be crossover.

I have run the breadth of experiences. And I don't think any of this stuff is even necessary. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have this stuff. But, I've been enjoying this hobby just fine on what I've got. Like I said...
World records. Championship competition. I've driven real stockcars, and I've gone from trucksim to trucker, to trucksimmer again.
And on a note about poverty. I live in the U.S, but I live in third world conditions. Moreover, my childhood living conditions have ruined my health. I barely have enoug for a meal these days. Dang. Logitech G25? I feel really old now. My first FFB racing wheel was from a brand where I can't even remember its brand name. It was a V3 or V4 Pro steering wheel if I remember correctly., This was also back when I also just gotten my Asus V7700 Deluxe with built-in 3D glasses. This was a GeForce 2 GTS card with a whooping 32MB of VRAM. I used to play a racing sim called Viper Racing, which I got a bootlegged copy off a mate from a LAN party. (Anyone remember those?) and also had lots of fun driving Porsches in Need For Speed 5 Porsche Unleashed game. A few years afterwards, I ordered a "modern" FFB wheel, tri-pedals and H shifter "Force RS set" from a company called Act-Labs, The entire thing cost about £300 with shipping from Canada. This was the first H shifter on the market, and shortly afterwards, it was either Logitech or Thrust Master that produced their own H shifter, (I leaning towards Logitech) which really gained those in popularity. Good times.

While it has been really cool having more real world drivers come into the hobby, some of it has been bad imo. Some have come into the hobby straight into rigs that most of us could ever dream of owning. They have a huge influence due to who they are and I think some are sending out the message that what they have for a rig is what you need to get into the hobby if you’re “serious”. The real world drivers are often using their sim to closely simulate the steering force, etc of their real car. The sim racer that is trying to be competitive in the sim world is different than someone who is trying to closely replicate the real thing. That’s why you hear about some esports drivers that prefer to run low force feedback settings or run on screens as opposed to VR because they tend to drive more on the limit with “unrealistic” settings.

I think my main problem with the G29 today is that it is worse than its price would suggest. It still sells because of the brand recognision and it looks cool, but if people stopped buying it then Logitech would be forced to make something better in the 2-300 dollar range. The tech is 20 years old now, and has barely changed.
I wish new simracers had a better option, form a reputable brand, for the same price, that didn't feel so far removed from real life force feedback. I think it is a great shame that so many people experience the G29 as their first wheel, because I think it could quickly put people off the whole genre. Especially if those people have any real world driving experience before getting into sims.
That said, lots of people are super fast with the G29, and even with xbox controllers, so who am I to say they can't be an enjoyable experience. I just think Logitech or Thrustmaster could do better for the price.

So, it's definitely reassuring for me to hear straight from @randomcallsign that it just simply isn't true. If you love racing, you love racing whether it's a G29 or a real F1 car. • @codyrunsfast1
    @codyrunsfast1 28 днів тому

I think there are different types of "taking it seriously". First off, you can do any sim and take it seriously if you're trying to improve your skills and get better regularly. You can have a 10k iRating on a G923 simply because you take it seriously, practice, work on your skills, etc. But then there's a whole different type of taking it seriously, not better, not worse. That's the people who are trying to replicate the experience of actual racing cars. They buy special wheels, tactile transducers, triple screens, a high-power wheelbase, they wear gloves, (and the silly ones, helmets, lol, jk), they have advanced brake pedals, etc. And they do all this because sim racing should be as close to the real thing as possible for them. It simply depends on what is more important to each driver, getting good, or replicating the real thing. Because if you just want to get good, you don't need all the fancy stuff, and in fact a lot of it slows you down (camera shake, tactile feedback, high FFB, etc.)
For me, the fun is replicating driving real race cars, so yes, I dropped a bunch of money on my stuff. And one time recently I shared my rig (because building it is a hobby all in itself), and one of the fast guys in a league i'm in responding by showing his Logitech in the air that he was saying, "I'm faster than this guy and I spent way less than he did". And I'm thinking, that's not the point, dummy.

I agree totally with Random: is the driver that makes the difference not the tool. Also the simulation sw is a bottleneck. For example I purchased a DD pro for GT7 and I could not feel kerbs or road surfaces like in Assetto. Then I tried the old CLS Fanatec always with GT7 and it was simply better. In that case, downgrading the hw, the simulation was more rewarding (not the speed...)

  • @RDMracer
    @RDMracer 29 днів тому

The thing with expensive equipment, is also spending your money correctly. Your sim racing equipment goes beyond the wheel alone. Even, in some ways there is no significant difference between a G29 and a DD wheel as they are currently both limited to USB and the amount of cycles of the game. Someone like me, who spends more on the rig sturdyness and pedals has different advantages to someone who's racing with a larger screen at 144 Hz.
And there are also downsides to some better equipment. I'm not doing enough of my favourite sports at the moment, and I can feel a deminishment of my own braking performance in longer races in prototype cars because for those cars I have the brake sensitivity of my SCP V3 pedals as low as possible. If you use a bigger more expensive screen, you may be at a disadvantage because you have to actively look around for information, which takes more attention, and you may be able to run at a lower framerate than with a smaller screen. If you upgrade your wheel at anything above 8Nm spec (and for some even less) you will lose car control if you don't have the right leverage or you're not trained enough.

I think his tweet was in poor taste but not necessarily wrong.
Is there a difference between someone who races karts at the national/international level and someone who does rental karting at their local track? Yes.
So it stands to reason there is a difference between someone with Simucube Ultimate and Active pedals & someone using a G29.
In my opinion the G29 and rental karter are both at the bottom level of a ladder. There is nothing wrong with being on the bottom rung of a ladder but that is where you are.
The effort invested in something does tend to reflect the “seriousness” that someone view something with.
And I don’t even have a sim rig. Im selling my kart for a rig because I realized I don’t have the money to compete with the top guys in karting. I don’t race for fun, I race because I’m competitive and want to win.

national and international licenses have something in between in order to compete at those championships: the access
a driver with a g29 can drive at any game and at any class the simucube user can. the difference is hardware, not access to races. It does not necessarily means "taking it seriously". Gregor Hutu has raced for so long with a G25. A lot of people in any given level race on entry level stuff.

I'd say the sim racing market is a lot about marketing. Whereas the masses who only dip slightly into the competitive scene are buying off the brand with the biggest influencer budgets (we had Fanatec on top for years now, last 2-3 years it was all about Moza, then Asetek and now Simagic) the people really dedicated to sim racing buy more stuff of smaller but proven brands (stuff like Simucube, VRS, Heusinkveld etc).
Can a pro racer beat you on Logitech G29? Yes! Will he be faster on VRS Pedals and a Ascher wheel? Of course! Are pro drivers earning enough money to make a living? Probably not. Will said pro take every chance on additional money by getting sponsored through .. lets say Simagic? Obviously yes! Will you be able to compete against said pro driver if you buy exactly his gear without putting in the work? Hell no!

That because raving about it is just proof he has spend lot more in it that is reasonable on his position. I have spend maybe more, but still I am not that serious. Its hobby, not my life. Then again there is kid who saves whole year for playstation and Gran turismo instead of candy, so he has to be quite seriously interested about simracing. Great difference versus real racing is, that rarely you can buy speed. Some simgear might have little benefits, but mainly we are just looking for immersion.
