I feel like if mobile suits were available to the general public, they'd be like boats. Super expensive, stays docked 90% of the time, and you can't wait to sell it.
I think Patlabor does non-combat mecha really well, they developed mecha for basically all kinds of heavy-duty work. Most "labors" were probably construction mecha, but they also showed mechs made for fire/rescue/medical response, underwater exploration/extraction, farming/agriculture, mining, and of course, the titular police mechs to deal with the rise of mecha-related crime that came with labors becoming more common in everyday life. I actually kinda wish Gundam would develop more civilian mobile suits and show them doing dangerous stuff like deep-space or hazardous planet exploration, extraplanetary mining, colony construction, rescue operations, etc.
Theres actually quite a few of them, we usually just don't see them in media since we are usually looking from the POV of the frontlines. An example I remember from this channel is the civilian/urban version of the mook suits from Seed which basically only carried weak guns and a Heat dagger equivalent that they use for law enforcrment
I love that line of 'The Federation wanted to distance itself from the Titans after the Gryps conflict' but they're fine keeping Gryps 2 in their back pocket during Unicorn and later trying to get it back up and running again in UC 169.
Fun fact/s: The reverse is usually more common in real life: a civilian product that has military uses. The US through its international trade laws calls these "Dual-Use" products, and heavily limits their sale. For example, certain civilian aircraft electronics components can both be flight guidance systems for passenger planes, but also missiles. US trade laws hold the US-based manufacturer or retailer liable if they sell to entities representing those in blacklisted countries like Russia, China or various Arab states. Also, Nazi Germany was actually limited in certain military use material because they couldn't possibly hide it as a civilian thing. For example, the reliance on Stukas and dive-bombing is mostly due to a tight shortage of medium-to-heavy bombers. It's not just that they were expensive to produce, but Germany pre-war couldn't hide any such pilot training programs. Because single-engine piloting wasn't restricted (Germany participated in air races etc.) but multi-engine, especially four-engine, was. Germany tried to establish commercial airlines to justify this, but even then four-engine pilot training would still be highly suspect. The fact that Germany couldn't really try strategic bombing, a sort of attractive doctrine at the time, really hampered their efforts, as well as created friction between the Heer and the Luftwaffe. It was after all the time when an "air force" was meant to be a sort of division of the army in most militaries (air support, air superiority, artillery spotting), and hadn't been its own branch yet.
The 2 Ahab Reactors in Barbatos doubled as power generators for Tekkadan's base. And the Jegans from Hathaway's Flash were also used as a deterrent of sorts by the Feddies' version of the Border Patrol, the Manhunters.
Vanadis Institute: "This is the purpose of GUND technology. To ensure humanity is protected from the cold harsh space with these mobile suits, the Gundam."
Realistically mobile suits would be far more useful for construction than for combat. P.S: what i mean is that mobile suits would be incredibly useful for work in real life, with a mobioe suit you could assemble a house as if it was an Ikea cabinet, a single M.S could replace cranes, excavators and bulldozers.
Not really. Construction machines are already really useful, and for much cheaper. If you were gonna go out of your way to make a mobile suit, you may as well kit it out for high-space-maneuverability for combat, as that's what it's really good at.

Another example for racing MS would be from Gundam AGE, as Woolf Enneacle used to be a pro mobile suit racer, with the beyond Katoki fully decal'd Shaldoll-G as his main MS of choice. Another alternate MS usage from AGE was the Rogue Bat, named after its rather gothic appearance. The large bat-like wings protruding from its back were used to store extra propellant and also had radio sensors that acted similarly to a bat's echo location; both of these were added in order to maximize its efficiency in deep space mining operations after the end of the Vagan war.

Just want to make a slight correction. To make Gundam's was not Vanadis goal. It was medical technology from the start but they needed funding to continue their research which required them to merge with Ochs Earth and to repurpose the medical technology for warfare.
So, the duels in a sense are like Mobile Fighter G Gundam's Gundam Fights since for the most part they are one-on-one and are for sport. The Nobel/Noble Gundam can be used for Mobile Suit Gymnastics. Speaking of said Gundam from Neo Sweden, in a sense it can teleport with the help of the Berserker System.
People describe the metal gear as a weapons platform as if it would be used as a platform for a variety of utilities, but I don't know may examples of a mech that can be utilized truly as versatile as a platform as the TR-6
Probably a mix of Stargazer and Astray Outframe exploration with backpack/core block system serving as living quarters with amenities while away from a ship. Basically a MS equivalent of a Kei Truck. can be sold for researchers, exploration, and tourism. Perhaps the sewage system can also be used as an offensive attack. 🤣 Closest we can get would be using a Raysta as a base although ZAFT had something similar "Hospital Zaku" which the ZAKU carried a special wizard pack that functioned as a medbay / clinic.
Don't forget that gundams can now store souls, which would be useful for transferring ones self to a healthy replicant body that is if you don't mind overriding said replicants free will and memories, although I think this would fall under thr medicine category since it is essentially curing oneself from death
See all the ethical issues there are an issue of replicant manufacture. They solved that issue with innovades over in 00's timeline. Plus, if the tech is miniaturized enough you could (theoretically) just make a Micro-Mobile Suit and remote control it from your main psychoframe so people don't know it's not you. Still have to be a newtype most likely, but cyber-newtype production methods have surely advanced to be less traumatic right?
"if you had your mobile suit what would you do?" That depends what kind of high jinks and shenanigans I can get away with for example the ultimate gundams ability to regenerate itself coupled with heavy-arms disrespectful amount of firepower, and the double o risers ability to teleport
and Macross actually has strong civilian culture build around mecha. There are races, many people own private valks, if we consider MII, there are specialized mecha used for journalism, as standard equipment. Construction, communal works, exploration, general labor intesive tasks, there is a more or less humanoid mecha ready to use. Suprisingly, not for agriculture, but that's because resident 18 meter tall aliens actually like farming old style.
I'd like to mention that Barbatos was originally a power source for CGS due to the two Ahab Reactors before Orga had Mika pilot it. Not sure if this was exclusive to Barbatos, but yeah, Gundams and I'd assume Mobile Suits can be used as power sources.
Both versions of the Ptolemaios from Gundam 00 ran off of GN particles generated from the four Gundam's GN Drives that they stored while they were docked on the ship.
@marthofaltea1751 Oh yeah, that's right. Though if I remember correctly, the second one had its own power source but used the Gundams for a boost and Trans-Am.
@@MrBee8000 Ptolomeios II still didn't generate it's own GN particles, and had to resupply from the Gundams. It just seems like Celestial Being had simply figured out how to rig systems using GN Condensers to perform Trans-Am inbetween seasons. Another example is the 00 Raiser using Trans-Am while being powered by Condensers in the movie, or Cherudim's bits being able to go into Trans-Am too even if Lockon launched it without them connected.
If its the destroy gundam, maybe its big enough to not just transform into a bipedal, Big Zam-ish mobile armor, but a part-time bipedal Big Zam-ish mobile HOME?
I'd like to see a series where Mobile Suits primary function is space exploration. Like, set during an earlier age of colonization -- a kind of wild west where the imaginary boarders haven't been drawn yet and prospectors are out there scouring the solar system for riches. In this largely lawless environment people start retrofitting their Mobile Suits and other tools into makeshift weapons since no one has real arms manufacturing going on out there, and a nuclear powered giant robot is still a nuclear powered giant robot.
1 more use for those Mobile Suit that i think you havent mention but is being seen multiple time in series use as power plant/power generator in IBO, Barbatos was first seen used as one in 00, all the original GN Drive Gundams has been seen used as one (for Ptolemy) probably few more but these are the one i rmmber
There’s also their Core Landers that double as personal transports, ie the Fighter’s personal hover car for them and their crew since it seats around 3 to 4 people I think.
I was about to comment on how I'd try to pull a Lelouch and go to war with the whole world, but then you clarified "other than war"...I suppose it would make a kick-ass gaming computer...
Gund-arm looks like an evolution of the IBO suit interfaces, now that I think about it... Two things the Gundam Woundwort can't do: Fit into the aesthetic of the timeline and look good at all, hah! I have awful tastes...
I think i can describe how Mika can move with the Barbatos being connected, and i can sum it up in two ways: 1. As mikazuki recieved more feedback from the Barbatos, it would also be forced out to the point some of his muscle memories would completely disintegrate and he become paralyzed because of it. 2. The Barbatos, having originally been used with the OG Alaya-vjinana, would only work with the original, so when Mika and his pseudo-alaya-vjinana connected, the Barbatos would sense a disturbance and try to force the pilot out by proceeding to destroy the body. It might also pertain to how Mika talks to the Barbatos because the system knows he's not the original pilot but will make do at the cost of losing his.
I mean, Hayato used Guntank's arm missile launchers as a stepladder for Guncannon to repair the White Base. Bright's clearly not amused by it, but hey, it worked.
If I had a mobile suit I would probably use it for heavy lifting and likely try to figure out how to mow my lawn with it, and likely for transportation, including groceries. Makes me think of an episode of Zoids. I think it was New Century Zero, the one with battle competitions. In one episode their raptor pilot took he Zoid out to get groceries and in one scene it was shown skipping while holding a shopping basket. It was hilarious.
If i get to choose one ms that can be useful besides war then I'd pick the astray red frame with the red dragon equipment. It looks sick and the caletvwch'es/excaliburs are literally welding equipment. Plus the 15m katana was actually used to cut metal or rebar.
And if we include manga, you can add camera to the list (Jess Rabble and his various machines)

I guess if someone really wanted to, the Turn-A's black hole would make for a fast "get this out of sight" machine.
If the turn A came into reality it would be swolloed by the black hole.
If the turn A came into reality it would be swolloed by the black hole.
You forgot to mention the Jegan being a firefighter in Hathaway's Flash
Don't forget that gundams can now store souls, which would be useful for transferring ones self to a healthy replicant body that is if you don't mind overriding said replicants free will and memories, although I think this would fall under thr medicine category since it is essentially curing oneself from death
See all the ethical issues there are an issue of replicant manufacture. They solved that issue with innovades over in 00's timeline. Plus, if the tech is miniaturized enough you could (theoretically) just make a Micro-Mobile Suit and remote control it from your main psychoframe so people don't know it's not you. Still have to be a newtype most likely, but cyber-newtype production methods have surely advanced to be less traumatic right?
the duel system is basically one of the things that makes Gundam Witch Mercury an armored core like gundam
also Guel afterdeath will become Hustler One >:)
I just came back to watching this guy, and he still doesn't get old
"if you had your mobile suit what would you do?"
That depends what kind of high jinks and shenanigans I can get away with for example the ultimate gundams ability to regenerate itself coupled with heavy-arms disrespectful amount of firepower, and the double o risers ability to teleport
on somewhat related note, Macross has literal mecha forklifts. On skate wheels, Knightmare style.
and Macross actually has strong civilian culture build around mecha.
Needed this video 3 years ago when I did “why mechs would be good for society and how they can help”.
WASHING MACHINE
COW TRANSPORT
I would take one GM and one Zaku and create a daily late night talk show. The Feds and Zeon show!
while not a gundam, Meer Campbell used a Zaku as a stage piece, and essentially Moral Booster
Turn A Gundam asserting dominance as an OP MS both on and off the field heh, talk about multi-purpose!
If its the destroy gundam, maybe its big enough to not just transform into a bipedal, Big Zam-ish mobile armor, but a part-time bipedal Big Zam-ish mobile HOME?
A legendary...
Strongest....
The black History tell of....
Used as laundry machine etc.
I don't know how to comment that 🗿🗿🗿🗿
Could you imagine how cool it would be to fly into school (or to work) in Wing Gundam ( with the buster rifle un-equiped of course).
Stargazer?
@@Kanae18 Unlucky for stargazer, it didn't get to do any exploration
barbatos was the first gundam to see human reproduction....
And the only one that had an offspring
When your washing machine can send humanity back to the stone age with little effort.
MIKA LAID PIPE IN THE BARBATOS??
Kinda? they technically both piped Atra, Mika used Barbs to move again and so you know.
@@zumo6703 so does that mean akatsuki has 2 moms and the 2 dads. Wow this kid is both immune to your "mom is gay" and your "dad is gay"

My favorite is Asshimar, and I would update it a little and fly around or go to a large shooting range.
The Barbatos was the best Wingman in Gundam
He always had been
The alternate use of mobile suits is to explore many planets and far reaches of space when humanity expand its reach and colonize them.
1 more use for those Mobile Suit that i think you havent mention but is being seen multiple time in series
use as power plant/power generator
in IBO, Barbatos was first seen used as one
in 00, all the original GN Drive Gundams has been seen used as one (for Ptolemy)
probably few more but these are the one i rmmber
On the note of Gundam 00, you can add 00 Quanta as an intergalactic Google Translate with extra neccessary steps.
You forgot the Astray Out-Frame: it is used for news reporting
Essentially mecha Frank West, complete with a small apartment and the beam sabers able to take different forms, including a screen for gaming
7:39 own a mobile suit for home defence as Zeon Diekun intended.
Imagine training to operate MS, getting the required licenses to own and use them, only to pilot It once a week to pick up groceries.
The teleportation gets even better, in the completely, undebatably non-canon SRW V, the Quan[T] manages to jump all the way to a parallel universe
Mobile Trace System for VR game as a body controller. XD heheh
That's actually a thing in the show lol
Alternate use of mobile suits: use it for Fighting Tournaments like Mobile Fighter Gundam did!
There’s also their Core Landers that double as personal transports, ie the Fighter’s personal hover car for them and their crew since it seats around 3 to 4 people I think.
This might not count but how about any psycho frame mobile suit because it can literally make you immortal.
Does interstellar communication between Earth humans and aliens count? (E.g.: Qan[T], which is not only used for teleportation)
I was about to comment on how I'd try to pull a Lelouch and go to war with the whole world, but then you clarified "other than war"...I suppose it would make a kick-ass gaming computer...
“I use a Gundam for home defense because that’s what the founding fathers intended.”
There's also Meer Campbell's Zaku Warrior that was converted into being a stage for her performances as Lacus in Gundam Seed Destiny
I guess thats one way to "turn a gundam"
Brought to you by Anaheim Electronics.
Not JUST pissing kerosene on the dumpster fire of the Earth Sphere.
Gund-arm looks like an evolution of the IBO suit interfaces, now that I think about it...
Two things the Gundam Woundwort can't do: Fit into the aesthetic of the timeline and look good at all, hah! I have awful tastes...
Oo! OO! I know something the Woundwort wasn't turned into! An amphibious MS!
I think i can describe how Mika can move with the Barbatos being connected, and i can sum it up in two ways:
The Sakibure from Awakening of the trailblazer could both teleport and was also used for deep space exploration
I mean, Hayato used Guntank's arm missile launchers as a stepladder for Guncannon to repair the White Base. Bright's clearly not amused by it, but hey, it worked.
Surprised you mentioned the Woundwort but not the ReBaund Doc. Like, come one! A Baund Doc that transforms into a giant winch is insane
You didn't mention the food industry either. The Ariel showed it was great at mskibg tomato paste
In my school vr game, there's a special hizack called the hizack HAS type (hide and seek)
Excuse me what kind of school has a vr game, let alone one with a MS
@Typical Gundam Enjoyer a very special one. Thank you very much
forgot using the barbatos as the reactor of cgs before being used as an ms
They make some pretty crazy sounds, so i bet you could use them to make some pretty wild industrial music.
I would kill for a Gundam racing game in an arcad-y style, like a mecha MarioKart.
Sakibure is arguably the strongest Ms build solely with construction work in mind.
I would use my mobile suit to troll and befuddle people. It'd be a shame if your car wound up atop a skyscraper while you were at work.
Barbatos: Im the Peak of Wingmens, There aint no other Gundams do it like me
If i get to choose one ms that can be useful besides war then I'd pick the astray red frame with the red dragon equipment. It looks sick and the caletvwch'es/excaliburs are literally welding equipment. Plus the 15m katana was actually used to cut metal or rebar.
Man, you can tell poor Kakarot couldn't believe the baby-making aspect.
