I love making these discovery videos they’ve been super popular. Made a few of them now. So many awesome games that just never were ported and became obscure. Cannon Dancer literally just got a limited switch release this year. And Outzone is about to release on Steam as part of a new Toaplan collection. Since this video even Xexex got an arcade archives release. But for every game that gets one there’s plenty more that are still unknown. Enjoy the games man. Best thing about this hobby is it’s hard to run out of sick games to play.
You keep saying it's a "shame" when these games never got a home port and remained arcade exclusive.. I see it from the opposite perspective.. I think it only makes them more unique and special. They are all pretty easilly accessible today.. so we lost nothing and it's a blast discovering lost arcade games you've never heard of. Definetely saving this video for future reference and be sure to try these games. ALL OF THEM. Thanks for the video. Keep them coming.
I do think it’s a shame personally yeah, as nobody knew about them to play and enjoy them. So they are kind of lost to time. You can emulate them now which is great. But most don’t know they exist. Now a lot more do from this video and some others before, but it’s a drop in the bucket to how many more would if released on arcade archives and given some press when they do. But I don’t disagree it’s mainly a figure of speech. I just mean it’s a shame more don’t know about them to enjoy them.
Now _THAT_ is great graphics and music!! I remember being so mesmerized watching all the different styles of beautiful, hand-drawn animated arcade games and listening to their kick ass soundtracks!
I have a feeling it's only a matter of time. Their plate is just so full and they are so small, it's anyone's guess when they will get to it. @@SevenCompleted You can! I created a Sony Japan account and download games from there all the time. To be fair Sony makes it a real pain in the ass and you'll need google translate and a fake japanese address, but it's doable. Once it's done once then it's easy as anything else. Nintendo makes it easy creating a Japan eshop account is cake. Doing it on PS4 is a pain. Why don't they release it in the US store? Beats me!

So yes, I have actually played EVERY game listed. I am dead serious. I've been an arcade gamer since I was 3, I'm 41 now and my friends and I are all big shmup players. I have seen A LOT in my arcade gaming time, now I work for one. It's very cool! Excellent content btw and thank you!
That's insanely impressive, especially if you're including all the games in the montage sequence I had at the end. I was familiar with all the ones I featured, but there was quite a few I hadn't even heard of until two weeks ago making this. As much as I've played it was always more console focused so I'm loving discovering these as well. We're about the same age too within a couple years.

26:02 It’s nice to see Cyvern getting some love. I love that game even more than some bigger, more well-known shooters. And Leo, the black sheep of the R-Type family, is one of my favorites as well. Very cool to see these listed back to back. Excellent recommendations all around 👍
Cyvern was one of the games on this list I never had played before until I was researching and putting this video together, compared to most of the others which I had. And I wasn't disappointed.... well besides how badly it kicked my ass for a while. I still need a couple credits to get through it it's a beast of a game, but a ton of fun. So I'll be playing it again. If only a Leo PCB didn't cost a small fortune.
I spent a large portion of my childhood in arcades, and Outzone captured my imagination from the very first time I fired it up... To this day, it, Mortal Kombat & Street Fighter 2, are probably my most played arcade titles. I still fire up Outzone every once in a while - every note of that epic soundtrack is emblazoned in my mind.
Don't blame you, it's definitely a top 3 Toaplan game for me. I really don't get tired of giving it a run every now and then. It's timeless in how much I can enjoy replaying it, whether I make it all the way through or not.
Another super interesting video! It makes me really want to explore the arcade side of the shmup scene. As much as I'd love the supergun I know it would just be in storage for the foreseeable future, so I'll not enter and let everyone else have a crack at it. Thanks so much for your videos. I have a MAME cabinet with THOUSANDS of games, and after all the classics (Pacman, Donkey Kong, etc.) it is sOOOOO difficult to wade through the titles to find things I like. Your videos are so helpful with that.

Doc has things well in hand there. They will be fine. I just came from there a week ago, and it looks great. Everyone is doing well and the arcade was packed every day. I hope you you can get there. If you love these old games it is an absolute must. I travel there twice a year, support them with some financial donations and put their name out where ever and when ever I can. I just became a lifetime member there.
Shmup Junkie, for the past two weeks, I've watched almost all your videos and have started on your advice to play Blazing Lazers for beginner shmups. You're a pretty effective dealer, and I'm loving this shit. Also, because of your videos I finally realized what the arcade game I played but sucked at as a kid: Donpachi haha I tried playing it again and thanks to your tips, can manage somehow. I hated shmups as a kid because they ate my coins, but thanks to beat 'em ups I suddenly wanted to scratch the arcade itch again. Then I typed "shmups" on UA-cam and saw you having so much fun with it and that's how I started with my current shmup addiction.

As someone forged into 3rd-world crappiest arcades, I really appreciate the video. Money was tight, and becoming good was simple good economics. Those were days that really steeled my character and the person I'd become years later. MAME has been a big passion ever since I've heard of that project. Flashgal, early Ghost n' Goblins, mostly everything Data East, and those weird bootleg PCBs... BTW, I'd love to have a nice rotating monitor setup like that. I'm good for ROMs and Super Guns, though, so I'll leave the opportunity for someone who might need it more than I do =) Keep up the great videos.
I re-watched again this video and... finally Xexex is releasing on Arcade Archives today or tomorrow depending where you live... I'm so happy!!! I hope more of this video will be ported officially on modern consoles!
Yes I heard about that release a while back too! What a great choice of game to release. I think a lot of people who love Konami classics will be in heaven. It’s a fantastic underrated game by them just like Space Manbow.

Ha! I know the feeling. Only in my case I have a mountain of games to play but just can’t due to being so busy making videos. If it’s not for an upcoming topic I just don’t have the free time. So I eventually catch up by making videos on the games I want to play. I’m just glad you’re enjoying them. As I’m still having a good tone making them. And there’s another kick ass one coming this Sunday for the best obscure run n guns.
I've played all of these, they're all great, especially Batrider. Not sure if you've seen it, but there is actually a mini-port of Xexex included in Ganbare Goemon 2 for SNES, granted it's only one stage with a boss, and pared back quite a bit, but it's pretty bloody amazing considering it's just a bonus inside a 16mbit game. Konami really were wizards in this era.
great job covering these lesser known games! I always loved the art style and gameplay in Osman, and Xexex is never talked about enough IMO, so creative and fun - too bad we never got a serious stand alone port of it.
I can see why Osman didn't being by a more obscure dev, but it's crazy Xexex didn't even if it was planned... being from Konami and such a good game too. I would love to see a Hamster arcade archives port by them it really deserves it. One of their fav shooters of mine they ever made.
Xexex _did_ get ported once - to the PlayStation Portable, in Japan only, as part of the Salamander Portable compilation. That aside, I mostly just know it for the hilariously short "development and release" section on its Wikipedia article. Here it is, word for word: "Xexex was developed by Konami."

@@ShmupJunkie it was your Every Mega Drive shooter reviewed video that caught my eye, your appreciation for music in a shoot em up (I refuse to call them shmups) that I completely agree with in a big way, the likes of Metal Squad in Thunder Force 4 makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end . It elevates an already outstanding shoot em up to god tier levels. Playing it with a decent beefy set of stereo headphones plugged into the front of a mk1 Megadrive propels it even further.
@@garycormack Absolutely you’ll notice how I focus quite a bit on music in most of my segments. It’s just such a critical part of the experience for me too. No matter how good a game is it always feels like something is missing when the music isn’t memorable. I even made a video called the epic music of shoot ‘em ups lol.
@@ShmupJunkie On a separate note did you know that Thunder Force 4 on the Gold pack for the Saturn has no slowdown at all? It also has clearer speech samples more akin to Thunder Force AC, sadly this version has one critical flaw, the sound has no Bass, for some unknown reason all the heavy low end basey sound fx are missing and instead sound extremely tinny like it’s playing through treble only, it hurts the over all package for me to the point that i would still rather play the MD version

Although it’s not the best entry Thunder Force 6 has an immense soundtrack also and even features a track called Full Speed which is arrangement of a Gradius 2 track Burning Heart, as soon as you hear it you instantly know it’s from Gradius

I'd love to see a video on the great rotary stick shooters one day like Time Soldiers, SAR, Gondomania, Heavy Barrel, Bermuda Triangle, etc., because I'm sure you'd do them justice. #IWANTMYPCB
I would absolutely love to do that, but to really do it justice, I'd love to have a way to play them properly using a similar rotary. Not easy to come by! Some are really tough without them too since they are designed for it, like Forgotten Worlds. If I can find a great way to do it I totally would. Oh and you're IN for the giveaway!
Toaplan is definitely my favorite shmup developer, batsugun was my very first 1cc and I even managed to counterstop batsugun special a year or so later! Man that was tough, one of my greatest shmup achievements! Great video as always, keep it up! Shoutout to Red Balltop! #IWANTMYPCB

If you can find a good one, do it! I wish I had any decent ones in my area. I've been dreaming of flying to the Galloping Ghost post covid which I showed some in the video. That place seems to have everything and all the good stuff.

Yes I remember that feeling also! I used to do a morning paper round then a one right after school just so I could travel to my local arcade and spend every penny, it was where I first 1cc'd R-Type and it was just amazing memories, and that's why I really love these videos as it takes me back to that time when the arcade was king!
As a kid, I was always on the lookout for new/different arcade machines at the grocery store, bowling alleys, Circle K, etc. And it's true, when SF2 came out no other machine mattered. When you walked into an arcade, you just listened for Dhalsim's elephants and like a magnet was pulled to that cab.
True that. It was always the local 7-11s for us. It was hard to pass one and not wander in to see if the cab was free for a quick game. Almost every one had a SF2 cabinet in the LA area haha.
Great video. I emulate a lot of these through mame/final burn. The mister project looks really interesting. Hopefully the Toaplan games will see a release, I believe M2 has the go ahead to port them.
Thanks! Yes I used the same mame/final to play most of these. The Mister is outstanding and just gets better by the month with new cores. They play so perfectly. M2 does in fact have the go ahead and has been working on the Toaplan stuff, but it's quite the undertaking and could still be a while.

Yup I got my Switch physical of Cannon Dancer right here. Never thought I’d see that game ever get an actual release. It’s been awesome seeing so many good games get recent limited physicals and digital releases. It wouldn’t be happening if there wasn’t demand for it.
There might be hope for the Capcom Alien vs Predator as it was included on the Capcom Home arcade *mini* system Koch put out a couple of years ago. Awesome video as ever. So many incredible games that have slipped by me despite me being a lifelong gamer.
I wonder how they managed to license that but not for other releases... just a stand alone release of that game on Switch and PS4 should sell so well. People can't stop asking for it. But now that it works perfect on the Mister CPS2 core that's all I'm going to need.

I did hear about that from one other person too, I wonder how they are doing it for some releases and not others if licensing is difficult. I'm sure lots of folks would love to see it on the Stadium release. That'd sell some copies.
#IWANTMYPCB Apparently Alien vs Predator, r-type leo and boogie wings were released outside of the arcades. -AvP is on the capcom home arcade and had a planned 32X version, but it got cancelled. -Boogie wings is on the super retro-cade (an emulation box by retro-bit). -R-type leo was released only on item arcade hits (that collection looks pretty delicious).

@@ShmupJunkie I’d been collecting and playing shmups for a few years now, amassing a good portion of both retro and modern titles, and re-releases (like all the cave stuff on 360) and I’ve played a few on the MiSTer as well. But only starting to mess around with MAME now and the amount of stuff is overwhelming 🤯

No childhood where you got to play so many games is a bummer, even if you were playing them on a clone or emulated. There's a ton I never got to see or play in arcades either. Not until I could play them on PC. It is a bummer though that most arcades are gone, but at least we still have all these ways of playing them.

Damn that’s some legendary company right there! Funny I actually did a little six million dollar man spoof in my RType delta bit in that history video. I remember it well. I’m having a blast making these which is important when it takes 60-80hrs easy to make something like this.

Great compilation! I'm a Toaplan fan as well. Notice a lot of comments about Boogie Wings and want to share that you can play it officially through Antstream Arcade. They have a lot of arcade games and a free tier.
I've yet to try one of the streaming game services but I've been seeing a few and some game options are intriguing. Good to hear Boogie is getting some exposure even if it's streaming for now. It's a really interesting game and fun coop.
@@ShmupJunkie Recommend definitively to check out Antstream if you have a decent broadband connection. There's also plenty of Cave shooters, and the usual suspects from SNK, Namco, Taito etc. I'm totally hooked and speaking of Data East played through Tumblepop there the other day. Got my 8bitdo arcade stick hooked up to the computer for the experience.
I don’t know what impresses me the most, your knowledge in games, your ability to produce entertaining videos, your insane level of skill when it comes to playing games or the amount of time you put into all of the above 😅 All in all, I loved watching this video, many of the games I hadn’t seen before but they still brought me back to the arcade glory days and in a mood to play them! I try to show that from time to time as I wish more would try those rotating mounts for TVs. They’re cheap and make it easy to do and I get plenty of use out of mine. Outzone is so good I’m looking forward to that eventual Toaplan release by m2.

I never heard of some of these games, and there's already so many games on MAME as is. I'll never play all of them, that's why I play shmups. I can at least play them all by the end of my natural life. A life goal to reach. Dang, that Super Gun looks nice, but I don't have any PCB's to connect to it, so it would probably be an arcade stick for me. I'll pass on it, give someone else a better chance to win it, because I'm just that nice of a guy. ;) Speaking of controllers, it made me think of a topic I would like to see on this channel. Maximillian Dood just made a video about gamepads vs arcade sticks for fighting games. I figured maybe you can give your two cents about which is better for shmups. For me, an arcade stick is the way to go if they are direct 8 way. It feels so much more responsive. However, for more modern shmups that have analog controls, I'd actually go with a joystick, like my Logitech 3D max pro. i would never play a shmup that has 8 way direction with it, but for shmups with analog, oh man, I can't play with anything else. It's so smooth, like butter, but that large analog range makes it a more expert level controller as if you push it all the way in a direction, you'll have a delay in going the other way, and that can cost you. Mastery is required with that thing, but I would have it no other way.
The only time I played shmups with an analog is when I had such a bad blister on my thumb from a caravan competition I had no choice. It was the only way I could keep playing using a different part of my thumb lol. I am a pad player myself and not as good with a stick. Some even use a keyboard and are amazing. Some of the top super players even use a pad. So really there is no best way, aside from using a stick as that's the only acceptable method in Japanese competitions that don't allow emulation and require playing on a real PCB. But you can be amazing using anything with enough practice, it's whatever works for you.
Great video! I remember Out Zone, Xexex, and Cyvern. I always enjoyed Cyvern in particular with it's tight gameplay and great graphics. Really wish we could get an M2-like port of it on the Switch, PS4, Xbox, and / or PC.
If they could get the rights to it, without a doubt it deserves the royal treatment. Hard as hell too so the convenience features would be a huge help.
@@ShmupJunkie Yes it was hard as hell. They threw in the kitchen sink with all those bullets and patterns. As you said, the convenience features would make it a must own shooter on PC or console... a cool looking physical release with some awesome Cybernetic Dragon artwork would be icing on the cake!

I really enjoyed making that little intro sequence thanks. It was a good primer for the episode and gets the nostalgia going. I did something similar for my Capcom Arcade Stadium review a while back and that also turned out really great.
Canon dancer is a whole lot of awesome. I wonder who owns the IPs from mitchel Corp? So many of those devs from the 80s and 90s died out a long time ago and many wound up in limbo. Maybe one day it’ll pop up on the evercade. The evercade has already proven to be a way of resurrecting obscure retro titles and arcade games by b-list developers Great video good sir!
Crazy is the right word. It’s been in some obscure compilations and also on the iiRcade now but that’s not something many have yet. Definitely easy to emulate and if you can find a friend to play with I do recommend it that way. Or maybe you’ll win this Supergun I’ve just added you to the list 👌

You know, there’s something else I should add about Xexex. You mentioned the Irem influence, but there’s an Irem technical influence as well. It’s one of Konami’s only arcade games to not to use 224px height, and instead opted for Irem’s 256px vertical resolution. The refresh rate drops to 55Hz as a result.
Finally - A UA-camr who knows his arcade stuff - damn dog - good stuff. My conundrum however is I need a video of non-shooters arcade; what are you top picks, and to be clear pinball is not a shooter?

I went last year in the middle of it all. they still had plenty of people gaming just was weird with some gamers having gloves on. They also have a pinball building down the block it's a short walk. u can pay extra to go to that building also. So $30 gets you gaming in both buildings for the day. Come and go as you please. Thanks to the video, i discovered a lot of Arcade Games that, not only, are beautiful but also seem really cool to play, but now i feel frustrated they never got ported on home consoles. Fingers crossed some of them have a similar fate as "Clockwork Aquario" and get ported on modern systems; A game like "Dolphin Blue" (just to name 1 of those presented here) would be an instant buy for me from the little i've seen in this video. Aliens the arcade game is awesome! My son and I went to an arcade fairly recently and cleared that game.... with a ton of credit feeding of course 😄, that game is tough lol. I’m a huge Alien fan and I can’t wait to show him the movies, but he’s just too young for them right now, so playing this game with him was just perfect. I got my Alien fix, and I’ve sparked some interest in him to something we both can share later down the road. You were spot on, about a similar situation you mentioned in the video. That's awesome man. I'm not sure my boy has played this original Aliens yet so it'll be great to play that with him on my actual Supergun and PCB now! Too cool. How old is your son? I know that the movie scared me pretty good back around 11-12 I wasn't that young, but that's a creepy film. I guess kids are more desensitized these days too. That and the OG Terminator was a bit rough on me until I got more desensitized as well. Of course now it never gets old. Toaplan games are legendary, I often fire up MAME to have a quick blast through them. They have that certain aesthetic and charm, they are not easy though!
My all time OG fav is still Tatsujin so Outzone scratches that itch. I’m really hoping m2 can keep making progress on their Toaplan arcade ports as it’s quite an undertaking but will be so good if they can get it done. Been waiting for that since they announced it.
I'm really hoping covid doesn't kill off the remaining handful of arcades we have left. Leaving us with no physical way to play and enjoy them any longer in one place. It's great we can emulate most, but it's never quite the same is it.
If I could last longer than 3 minutes on late 70s/early 80s game then that was a good game. Never did continues on later 80s games. Money went to fast that way. Got better when you started from the beginning over and over. Loved the video! Very in depth.

I love making these discovery videos they’ve been super popular. Made a few of them now. So many awesome games that just never were ported and became obscure. Cannon Dancer literally just got a limited switch release this year. And Outzone is about to release on Steam as part of a new Toaplan collection. Since this video even Xexex got an arcade archives release. But for every game that gets one there’s plenty more that are still unknown. Enjoy the games man. Best thing about this hobby is it’s hard to run out of sick games to play.

You keep saying it's a "shame" when these games never got a home port and remained arcade exclusive.. I see it from the opposite perspective.. I think it only makes them more unique and special. They are all pretty easilly accessible today.. so we lost nothing and it's a blast discovering lost arcade games you've never heard of. I do think it’s a shame personally yeah, as nobody knew about them to play and enjoy them. So they are kind of lost to time. You can emulate them now which is great. But most don’t know they exist. Now a lot more do from this video and some others before, but it’s a drop in the bucket to how many more would if released on arcade archives and given some press when they do. But I don’t disagree it’s mainly a figure of speech. I just mean it’s a shame more don’t know about them to enjoy them.
Now _THAT_ is great graphics and music!! I remember being so mesmerized watching all the different styles of beautiful, hand-drawn animated arcade games and listening to their kick ass soundtracks!

@@SevenCompleted You can! I created a Sony Japan account and download games from there all the time. To be fair Sony makes it a real pain in the ass and you'll need google translate and a fake japanese address, but it's doable. Once it's done once then it's easy as anything else. Nintendo makes it easy creating a Japan eshop account is cake. Doing it on PS4 is a pain. Why don't they release it in the US store? Beats me!

That's insanely impressive, especially if you're including all the games in the montage sequence I had at the end. I was familiar with all the ones I featured, but there was quite a few I hadn't even heard of until two weeks ago making this. As much as I've played it was always more console focused so I'm loving discovering these as well. We're about the same age too within a couple years.

26:02 It’s nice to see Cyvern getting some love. I love that game even more than some bigger, more well-known shooters. And Leo, the black sheep of the R-Type family, is one of my favorites as well. Very cool to see these listed back to back. Excellent recommendations all around 👍
Cyvern was one of the games on this list I never had played before until I was researching and putting this video together, compared to most of the others which I had. And I wasn't disappointed.... well besides how badly it kicked my ass for a while. I still need a couple credits to get through it it's a beast of a game, but a ton of fun. So I'll be playing it again. If only a Leo PCB didn't cost a small fortune.
I spent a large portion of my childhood in arcades, and Outzone captured my imagination from the very first time I fired it up... To this day, it, Mortal Kombat & Street Fighter 2, are probably my most played arcade titles.
I still fire up Outzone every once in a while - every note of that epic soundtrack is emblazoned in my mind.
Don't blame you, it's definitely a top 3 Toaplan game for me. I really don't get tired of giving it a run every now and then. It's timeless in how much I can enjoy replaying it, whether I make it all the way through or not.
Another super interesting video! It makes me really want to explore the arcade side of the shmup scene. As much as I'd love the supergun I know it would just be in storage for the foreseeable future, so I'll not enter and let everyone else have a crack at it. This all looks too cool, I can't wait till you do a video on the mister as I'm really intrigued by it. Well done!
Thanks so much for your videos. I have a MAME cabinet with THOUSANDS of games, and after all the classics (Pacman, Donkey Kong, etc.) it is sOOOOO difficult to wade through the titles to find things I like. Your videos are so helpful with that.

Doc has things well in hand there. They will be fine. I just came from there a week ago, and it looks great. Everyone is doing well and the arcade was packed every day. I hope you you can get there. If you love these old games it is an absolute must. I travel there twice a year, support them with some financial donations and put their name out where ever and when ever I can. I just became a lifetime member there.
Shmup Junkie, for the past two weeks, I've watched almost all your videos and have started on your advice to play Blazing Lazers for beginner shmups. You're a pretty effective dealer, and I'm loving this shit.
Also, because of your videos I finally realized what the arcade game I played but sucked at as a kid: Donpachi haha I tried playing it again and thanks to your tips, can manage somehow. I hated shmups as a kid because they ate my coins, but thanks to beat 'em ups I suddenly wanted to scratch the arcade itch again.
Then I typed "shmups" on UA-cam and saw you having so much fun with it and that's how I started with my current shmup addiction.

As someone forged into 3rd-world crappiest arcades, I really appreciate the video.
Money was tight, and becoming good was simple good economics. Those were days that really steeled my character and the person I'd become years later. MAME has been a big passion ever since I've heard of that project.
Flashgal, early Ghost n' Goblins, mostly everything Data East, and those weird bootleg PCBs...
BTW, I'd love to have a nice rotating monitor setup like that. I'm good for ROMs and Super Guns, though, so I'll leave the opportunity for someone who might need it more than I do =)

I've played all of these, they're all great, especially Batrider.
Not sure if you've seen it, but there is actually a mini-port of Xexex included in Ganbare Goemon 2 for SNES, granted it's only one stage with a boss, and pared back quite a bit, but it's pretty bloody amazing considering it's just a bonus inside a 16mbit game. Konami really were wizards in this era.
great job covering these lesser known games! I always loved the art style and gameplay in Osman, and Xexex is never talked about enough IMO, so creative and fun - too bad we never got a serious stand alone port of it.
I can see why Osman didn't being by a more obscure dev, but it's crazy Xexex didn't even if it was planned... being from Konami and such a good game too. I would love to see a Hamster arcade archives port by them it really deserves it. One of their fav shooters of mine they ever made.
Xexex _did_ get ported once - to the PlayStation Portable, in Japan only, as part of the Salamander Portable compilation. That aside, I mostly just know it for the hilariously short "development and release" section on its Wikipedia article. Here it is, word for word: "Xexex was developed by Konami."

@@ShmupJunkie it was your Every Mega Drive shooter reviewed video that caught my eye, your appreciation for music in a shoot em up (I refuse to call them shmups) that I completely agree with in a big way, the likes of Metal Squad in Thunder Force 4 makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end . It elevates an already outstanding shoot em up to god tier levels. Playing it with a decent beefy set of stereo headphones plugged into the front of a mk1 Megadrive propels it even further.
@@garycormack Absolutely you’ll notice how I focus quite a bit on music in most of my segments. It’s just such a critical part of the experience for me too. No matter how good a game is it always feels like something is missing when the music isn’t memorable. I even made a video called the epic music of shoot ‘em ups lol.
@@ShmupJunkie On a separate note did you know that Thunder Force 4 on the Gold pack for the Saturn has no slowdown at all? It also has clearer speech samples more akin to Thunder Force AC, sadly this version has one critical flaw, the sound has no Bass, for some unknown reason all the heavy low end basey sound fx are missing and instead sound extremely tinny like it’s playing through treble only, it hurts the over all package for me to the point that i would still rather play the MD version

Although it’s not the best entry Thunder Force 6 has an immense soundtrack also and even features a track called Full Speed which is arrangement of a Gradius 2 track Burning Heart, as soon as you hear it you instantly know it’s from Gradius

I would absolutely love to do that, but to really do it justice, I'd love to have a way to play them properly using a similar rotary. Not easy to come by! Some are really tough without them too since they are designed for it, like Forgotten Worlds. If I can find a great way to do it I totally would. Oh and you're IN for the giveaway!
Toaplan is definitely my favorite shmup developer, batsugun was my very first 1cc and I even managed to counterstop batsugun special a year or so later! Man that was tough, one of my greatest shmup achievements! Great video as always, keep it up! Shoutout to Red Balltop! #IWANTMYPCB

@@ShmupJunkie "Funspot" In NH claims to be the largest arcade in the country. They do have a large collection of 80s-90s arcade games. Worth checking out if you are in New England ever.

For me its Golden Axe: The Revenge of Deathadder, its my fav arcade game that never got a port.
Boggles my mind how it was never ported to Saturn or Dreamcast.
That game is long been one of my favorite go to examples for games you will never see at home without MAME.

Yes I remember that feeling also! I used to do a morning paper round then a one right after school just so I could travel to my local arcade and spend every penny, it was where I first 1cc'd R-Type and it was just amazing memories, and that's why I really love these videos as it takes me back to that time when the arcade was king!
As a kid, I was always on the lookout for new/different arcade machines at the grocery store, bowling alleys, Circle K, etc. And it's true, when SF2 came out no other machine mattered. When you walked into an arcade, you just listened for Dhalsim's elephants and like a magnet was pulled to that cab.
True that. It was always the local 7-11s for us. It was hard to pass one and not wander in to see if the cab was free for a quick game. Almost every one had a SF2 cabinet in the LA area haha.
Great video. I emulate a lot of these through mame/final burn. The mister project looks really interesting. Hopefully the Toaplan games will see a release, I believe M2 has the go ahead to port them.
Thanks! Yes I used the same mame/final to play most of these. The Mister is outstanding and just gets better by the month with new cores. They play so perfectly. M2 does in fact have the go ahead and has been working on the Toaplan stuff, but it's quite the undertaking and could still be a while.

Yup I got my Switch physical of Cannon Dancer right here. Never thought I’d see that game ever get an actual release. It’s been awesome seeing so many good games get recent limited physicals and digital releases. It wouldn’t be happening if there wasn’t demand for it.
There might be hope for the Capcom Alien vs Predator as it was included on the Capcom Home arcade *mini* system Koch put out a couple of years ago.
Awesome video as ever. So many incredible games that have slipped by me despite me being a lifelong gamer.
I wonder how they managed to license that but not for other releases... just a stand alone release of that game on Switch and PS4 should sell so well. People can't stop asking for it. But now that it works perfect on the Mister CPS2 core that's all I'm going to need.

Aliens vs Predator was released on the Capcom Home Arcade quite recently so I still have hopes for it coming to the Stadium collection.
I did hear about that from one other person too, I wonder how they are doing it for some releases and not others if licensing is difficult. I'm sure lots of folks would love to see it on the Stadium release. That'd sell some copies.

Apparently Alien vs Predator, r-type leo and boogie wings were released outside of the arcades.
-AvP is on the capcom home arcade and had a planned 32X version, but it got cancelled.
-Boogie wings is on the super retro-cade (an emulation box by retro-bit).
-R-type leo was released only on item arcade hits (that collection looks pretty delicious).

@@ShmupJunkie I’d been collecting and playing shmups for a few years now, amassing a good portion of both retro and modern titles, and re-releases (like all the cave stuff on 360) and I’ve played a few on the MiSTer as well. But only starting to mess around with MAME now and the amount of stuff is overwhelming 🤯

No childhood where you got to play so many games is a bummer, even if you were playing them on a clone or emulated. There's a ton I never got to see or play in arcades either. Not until I could play them on PC. It is a bummer though that most arcades are gone, but at least we still have all these ways of playing them.

Damn that’s some legendary company right there! Funny I actually did a little six million dollar man spoof in my RType delta bit in that history video. I remember it well. I’m having a blast making these which is important when it takes 60-80hrs easy to make something like this.

Great compilation! I'm a Toaplan fan as well. Notice a lot of comments about Boogie Wings and want to share that you can play it officially through Antstream Arcade. They have a lot of arcade games and a free tier.
I've yet to try one of the streaming game services but I've been seeing a few and some game options are intriguing. Good to hear Boogie is getting some exposure even if it's streaming for now. It's a really interesting game and fun coop.
@@ShmupJunkie Recommend definitively to check out Antstream if you have a decent broadband connection. There's also plenty of Cave shooters, and the usual suspects from SNK, Namco, Taito etc. I'm totally hooked and speaking of Data East played through Tumblepop there the other day. Got my 8bitdo arcade stick hooked up to the computer for the experience.
I don’t know what impresses me the most, your knowledge in games, your ability to produce entertaining videos, your insane level of skill when it comes to playing games or the amount of time you put into all of the above 😅 All in all, I loved watching this video, many of the games I hadn’t seen before but they still brought me back to the arcade glory days and in a mood to play them! I try to show that from time to time as I wish more would try those rotating mounts for TVs. They’re cheap and make it easy to do and I get plenty of use out of mine. Outzone is so good I’m looking forward to that eventual Toaplan release by m2.

And if I may throw out a request for a future arcade video, it's not all that obscure but definitely doesn't get the love it deserves - my favorite arcade game of all-time, Pigskin 621 AD. It's got fantastic art by Brian Colin (Arch Rivals, Rampage, Blasted, General Chaos) and is just so much fun to play.

I never heard of some of these games, and there's already so many games on MAME as is. I'll never play all of them, that's why I play shmups. I can at least play them all by the end of my natural life. A life goal to reach.
Dang, that Super Gun looks nice, but I don't have any PCB's to connect to it, so it would probably be an arcade stick for me. I'll pass on it, give someone else a better chance to win it, because I'm just that nice of a guy. ;)
Speaking of controllers, it made me think of a topic I would like to see on this channel. Maximillian Dood just made a video about gamepads vs arcade sticks for fighting games. I figured maybe you can give your two cents about which is better for shmups. For me, an arcade stick is the way to go if they are direct 8 way. It feels so much more responsive. However, for more modern shmups that have analog controls, I'd actually go with a joystick, like my Logitech 3D max pro. i would never play a shmup that has 8 way direction with it, but for shmups with analog, oh man, I can't play with anything else. It's so smooth, like butter, but that large analog range makes it a more expert level controller as if you push it all the way in a direction, you'll have a delay in going the other way, and that can cost you. Mastery is required with that thing, but I would have it no other way.
The only time I played shmups with an analog is when I had such a bad blister on my thumb from a caravan competition I had no choice. It was the only way I could keep playing using a different part of my thumb lol. I am a pad player myself and not as good with a stick. Some even use a keyboard and are amazing. Some of the top super players even use a pad. So really there is no best way, aside from using a stick as that's the only acceptable method in Japanese competitions that don't allow emulation and require playing on a real PCB. But you can be amazing using anything with enough practice, it's whatever works for you.
Great video! I remember Out Zone, Xexex, and Cyvern. I always enjoyed Cyvern in particular with it's tight gameplay and great graphics. Really wish we could get an M2-like port of it on the Switch, PS4, Xbox, and / or PC.
If they could get the rights to it, without a doubt it deserves the royal treatment. Hard as hell too so the convenience features would be a huge help.
@@ShmupJunkie Yes it was hard as hell. They threw in the kitchen sink with all those bullets and patterns. As you said, the convenience features would make it a must own shooter on PC or console... a cool looking physical release with some awesome Cybernetic Dragon artwork would be icing on the cake!

Canon dancer is a whole lot of awesome. I wonder who owns the IPs from mitchel Corp? So many of those devs from the 80s and 90s died out a long time ago and many wound up in limbo. Maybe one day it’ll pop up on the evercade. The evercade has already proven to be a way of resurrecting obscure retro titles and arcade games by b-list developers

Crazy is the right word. It’s been in some obscure compilations and also on the iiRcade now but that’s not something many have yet. Definitely easy to emulate and if you can find a friend to play with I do recommend it that way. Or maybe you’ll win this Supergun I’ve just added you to the list 👌

You know, there’s something else I should add about Xexex. You mentioned the Irem influence, but there’s an Irem technical influence as well. It’s one of Konami’s only arcade games to not to use 224px height, and instead opted for Irem’s 256px vertical resolution. The refresh rate drops to 55Hz as a result.
And yet another obscure fact I would never have known and now am glad I do. If I had before I would have mentioned it in the video too!

Ha!, no pinball is not a shooter I’m with you there. If you want more great rare arcade games check out two more recent vids I made. Best arcade action games you never played and best run n guns you never played. Most of the games in each list are from arcades and there’s a ton of rare bangers in there. More obscure than the ones in this video even. You’ll dig it.

Oh hell yeah I would love to one day. I was hoping it would survive through Covid it's so rare to have such an amazing collection of games in one place.
I went last year in the middle of it all. they still had plenty of people gaming just was weird with some gamers having gloves on. They also have a pinball building down the block it's a short walk. u can pay extra to go to that building also. So $30 gets you gaming in both buildings for the day. Come and go as you please. They just check your stamp when u return. IWANTMYPCB

Thanks to the video, i discovered a lot of Arcade Games that, not only, are beautiful but also seem really cool to play, but now i feel frustrated they never got ported on home consoles.
Fingers crossed some of them have a similar fate as "Clockwork Aquario" and get ported on modern systems; A game like "Dolphin Blue" (just to name 1 of those presented here) would be an instant buy for me from the little i've seen in this video.

Because you once did a greatest list, then i watched his channel like you suggested, but he went onto question your methodology of fun without mentioning your name, and did a long ass boring list of his own which I couldn't get through 5 minutes of.

Aliens the arcade game is awesome! My son and I went to an arcade fairly recently and cleared that game.... with a ton of credit feeding of course 😄, that game is tough lol. I’m a huge Alien fan and I can’t wait to show him the movies, but he’s just too young for them right now, so playing this game with him was just perfect. I got my Alien fix, and I’ve sparked some interest in him to something we both can share later down the road. You were spot on, about a similar situation you mentioned in the video. I know that the movie scared me pretty good back around 11-12 I wasn't that young, but that's a creepy film. I guess kids are more desensitized these days too. That and the OG Terminator was a bit rough on me until I got more desensitized as well. Of course now it never gets old. Toaplan games are legendary, I often fire up MAME to have a quick blast through them. They have that certain aesthetic and charm, they are not easy though!
My all time OG fav is still Tatsujin so Outzone scratches that itch. I’m really hoping m2 can keep making progress on their Toaplan arcade ports as it’s quite an undertaking but will be so good if they can get it done. Been waiting for that since they announced it.
Boogie Wings was included on my Legends Gamer Mini. It was months before I even looked at it. Now it's one of my top 5!

I'm really hoping covid doesn't kill off the remaining handful of arcades we have left. Leaving us with no physical way to play and enjoy them any longer in one place. It's great we can emulate most, but it's never quite the same is it.

If I could last longer than 3 minutes on late 70s/early 80s game then that was a good game. Never did continues on later 80s games. Money went to fast that way. Got better when you started from the beginning over and over. Loved the video! Very in depth.
