  • * New video comparing the MIJ and MIT versions of this pedal! • BOSS Japan VS BOSS Tai...
    Welcome to the first episode of vintage classics where I look at vintage and discontinued pedals. Today we have a made in Japan BOSS OD-2 from the 80s. While in namesake it's the successor to the OD-1 it's a completely different circuit, a type of overdrive that ended up in the OD-3 and the famous BD-2 blues driver. Due to its circuit it had very little output (around unity at Max) so they redesigned it and released it as the OD-2R with an extra output stage and a jack to change modes.
    I am using my Parent T-Style and my Frenzel HBX-AC15.
    The BOSS OD-2 can be found here reverb.grsm.io/boss-od-2-turb...

    I have this pedal, and it is AWESOME! People wonder how I get my tone. I also use a Boss CS-2 Compressor, and I have had rather large monetary offers for each (esp. The CS-2). Great pedals.

      +AlanKaruzo thanks man, I think a lot of boss pedals work really well in a quality rig, due to price a lot of people are using them in practice rigs and discount them because they don't magically make them sound amazing. Just look at all the touring musicians that still use boss pedals (especially 80s and early 90s pedals) when they can afford anything really.

    I’m using one stacked on top of a tc mojomojo. The mojo gives this nice vintage 30s break up, and the od-2 I’d this insane gain. Try it out.

    Anyone know how this pedal would be for boosting a high gain amp compared to a Tube Screamer or boss overdrive OD1?

    • @JimijaymesProductions
      @JimijaymesProductions  4 роки тому +1

      It cant provide the level boost to give more gain (though the od-2r can and is a better pedal for most things) but it can add a bit of midrange for leads. I will try to get a high gain (not much of a metal player but more rock high gain) demo done of all my overdrives.

      Unfortunately I've never go my hands on an od-2r if I do I will definately compare them. The od-2r has an extra post clipping stage for more volume and I imagine this will subtly affect the tone as well.

      The OD2r is harsh and not as warm. I’ve never had the issue with my OD2 being underpowered. It’s not explosively loud, but I’ve never had a problem getting unity gain with a clean sound. Somewhere around 3:00 Level is plenty.

    • @JimijaymesProductions
      @JimijaymesProductions  3 роки тому

      very different pedal, I havent much direct experience with the modern distortion plus but have used the circuit a little, that is more of a fuzzy hard clipping thing, cool for fuzzy light distortion or boosting an amp for that 80s sound this is more of a dynamic overdrive with a bit of gain and not as good for boosting an amp. A more similar pedal to the od2 currently in production would be the bd2 and the od3.

      @@user-jx8je6ci6d randy rhoads tone is much more about guitar and amp than anything but a dist+ into a cranked jcm800 should get you alot of the way there especially paired with a chorus and a wah pedal. If you dont have a jcm800 or similar medium gain marshall amp or cant crank it up and need a pedal, id look into marshall style pedals like the crunchbox or wampler pinnacle dlx. Alot is playing and pickups as well, rhoads and wylde had extremely similar rigs with the exception of the overdrive and pickups but sound quite different, zakks emgs really do modernize the ozzy tone in my opinion.

    I've had this pedal since 1986 but I never had to use such a drastic volume compensation.
    The amp should be louder and the pedal when kicked in should only be slightly louder.It is great with a loud clean channel of a Marshall.Then it sings.
    Here, it sounds too cardboardy.

    • @JimijaymesProductions
      @JimijaymesProductions  3 роки тому

      It is only slightly louder, on the non turbo setting full volume is below unity with gain below 9 o clock and just above with gain higher, its a common issue hence why the OD-2r was changed dramatically to have a much higher volume. Maybe your version was somehow louder than most, not sure. My ceriatone is a bad cat hot cat clone which has a bit of the marshall vibe and I used that on the comparison video, on this video I used my Frenzal HBX-AC15 which is kind of ac15ish but with a matchless hot rod preamp and marshall tone stack. The amps are both proper gigging volume loud (though I am using the ceriatone through a load box). Not sure if you really think that when I kick it on first that I have made it alot louder, to my ears its quieter in this video.

      Much more open sounding alot less creamy distortion/overdrive. More marshall less mesa (although a ds2 is nothing like a mesa). For sustain in a low gain overdrive I'd say an sd1 is better but really needs an amp that is breathing a little bit to sound great.

    I had this and sold it immediately because the overdriven sound was lower and weaker than the clean. Pretty disappointed to hear a weaker sound while expecting to go wilder when you go engage the effect...plus the overdrive sounds plastic and trashy :(

    • @JimijaymesProductions
      @JimijaymesProductions  6 років тому +1

      The volume issue is the main reason they made the od-2r which added a clean gain stage so there is way more volume on top. Eventually the circuit influenced the od-3 and bd-2 which are arguably better liked pedals. It does depend on guitars lower signal guitars definately can gain volume on the turbo channel but overall its usually about unity. Thanks for watching.
