I think the similarities might come from your dry sound which i'd say a bit too dirty that it contaminated each pedal too much.
@ 10:35 when the dry sounds cleaner, i can hear the difference easier.
Thanks for this review.
It's amazing that both Dean Wareham and Zakk Wylde used the SD-1 for most of their careers. Just proof that every good pedal can get any variety of sounds you'd like.
Depends on the amp, and to a lesser degree, the pickups. The BD2 sounds dark through a higher gain head, much different into a Fender. As was once pointed out, balance is important if you don't want mud; the saw was " Fender into Marshall, Gibson into Fender".Much has changed over time, but the basic principle still stands when you're putting together varied elements. The pre amp is going to make clipping pedals sound vastly different.
Pound for pound, i liked the SD-1 and Blues Driver the best here. The 2nd setting adjustment kinda muddied the Blues Driver a bit but they both held up their sound and tone the best in clarity overall. I think all 5 have their place obviously and are all fine but for being versatile, those 2 in particular stood out for me.
Nice demo!
Agreed.
The SD-1 is one of my favorite Boss pedals of all time. Does wonders with any Marshall style amp. It actually helps tighten the low end and cut out the mud. Great pedal.
Mudonmuhdicc
Thanks for the demo on these Robert. It seems like Boss has taken a back seat in musicians minds these days with our quest for the perfect tone and the countless boutique pedal builders claiming to have the next best thing. I myself own some boutique pedals and although some of them sound great they honestly sound no better than finding your tone in a Boss pedal. In fact you can buy two Boss pedals and combine their tones for in some cases less than the cost if one boutique brand pedal.
I have not played every Boss pedal but I have owned many and still own the Blues Driver, the Turbo Overdrive, the Super Overdrive, the Chorus pedals, EQ pedals, delays, etc, and they sound great and built like tanks. And they designed the best footswitch ever in my humble opinion. Don’t you hate stomping on those metal type switches in your socks?
The other brand pedal that has impressed me lately is some of Fender’s new line, notably the Pugilist Distortion and the Engager Boost for their excellent design, build quality and tonal versatility.
But as for Boss they will never leave my pedal board. Cheers sir and keep on Rockin !!
OD3 and Blues Driver sounded best to me.
The Blues Driver is the best Boss overdrive pedal In my opinion, so many pedals and the BD holds its own. Love the 80’s boss pedals as well, analog is my personal favorite.
Yep, I’m a huge fan of the Blues Driver pedal myself. I just did a video on it by itself a few weeks ago.
I gotta say one thing about the OD-2… It’s not really an overdrive in the Turbo mode. It’s an amp channel. Sounds best on a fat clean with these settings give or take. Level 3:00, Tone 9-11:00, and Turbo On Gain 3:00 to full.
OD-3 is my favorite and... dude, this Explorer is gorgeous!!
Thanks man!
I’ve also been on a Boss kick lately. I had all my pedals stolen years back, and I had the oc-2, os2 and tu-2. So far I’ve gotten a tu3w and a ds1, ordered the sd-1 in black from SweetWater. Hell yeah, boss pedals are always in good taste.
Cap
you missed the SD-2 Dual Overdrive. i'm trying to figure out if the SD-2 has an SD-1 built in or where the 2 different drives in the SD-2 comes from. it seems to be relatively uncommon.
That pedal is hard to find.
Agree, the blues driver rocks, interesting how all of them go almost into fuzz with the drive all the way up.
That first line “I before e….weird” that’s enough to get me to subscribe 😅
They all sound incredibly close to one another 😆
I don't know much but they all seemed about the same. My favorite is then none of them and all of them. I have an OD-3 and it's great.
The slight difference appears to be in the EQ. I think any good pedalboard should have a nice fully parametric EQ on it. If so, you can make any of these pedals sound best. You can then also adjust for different PUP's and also your acoustic rig with piezo's. A quality EQ like the SA EQ2 is stereo and let's you toggle between 2 different EQ's if you buy the optional switch. That can be very helpful in a song. It also has presets. I also bought the $349 Empress MKII ParaEQ Deluxe. I will keep whichever I want. The Empress is easier to adjust on the fly (more knobs) and might be quieter. It is all Analog, however no presets and only mono...and expensive. There is no perfect pedal. Each pedal does good and bad things, has some good features and will lack other features. You have to get what works for you based on your rig and what you like to play. All of these pedals are very good. Consider adding an EQ, Compressor, etc. I also LOVE my Boss DD500 Delay and RCLooper. Had a really nice Fractal FM9- 1,845. It was maybe best sounding but the on-unit UI made it near impossible to adjust on the fly which I find fun to do so it's gone.
My first substantial pedal board build has been fun. Flint, Boss OD3, MOOER Yellow Comp Compressor, DD500 Delay, RC500 Looper, N. Immerse Reverb + Petereson Strobe Tuner (DO GET ONE- made a huge improvement in my tuning.)
the od-3 has a more flat freq respons, great amp in a box pedal as the blues driver, but not a new version of the OD-1. The OD-1 changed a little over the years it was in produktion and the SD-1 is in it essence a OD-1 with an tone-control.
Unfortunately, from a compressed UA-cam and shitty my computer speakers, Im hearing no difference whatsoever, so for some of us out here in internet land, none of them stood out, but thanks for the comparison...
OD-2r here, baby. All I ever needed. All I ever wanted. Here, in my chain.
I absolutely love the od3. Its so good on my board
I love Boss pedals apart from that OS2.I have a MIJ OD2 which sounds great.
OD-3 is screamin'
I've got OD3 and SD1. I dont use OD3 i prefer SD1 that I've been using since I play in a band, more or less 12 years.
Try od3 with single coils and bridge humbuckers
Cool. I currently have no BOSS overdrive pedals. In fact, I only have two BOSS pedals. A Tremolo and Reverb. I need to get more BOSS pedals. Enjoyed the demo. Thanks, Robert.
You should, for sure. Or if not absolutely sure, try the clones out there by ie Nux or Behringer or so. They come real close for a fraction of the cost, but weren't built in a tank factory.👍
You can find the SD-1 and BD-2 on the used market at a very good price...
The prices on the BD-2 are going up, though. I used to be able to find those for $40-50 all day long. Now they’re up around $60.
@@RobertWJackson Robert, that's because of all the exposure you bring... You've just massively increased demand, and now prices are soaring! Man! Can't stand this guy...😎
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have to agree with you on the SD1 Overdrive pedal. Great for playing Blues and Classic Rock. The Blues pedal would be my second choice.
I get the best, and only really good, sound from my Boss DS-1 with the gain turned all the way down. I wouldn't get locked in to any particular setting without a good listen first.
Fearless Leader!
I've been (unknowingly) following your musical path; but I've been chasing down my Boss pedals, my Behringer pedals, Morely, MXR, you name it. Glad to see I'm in such good company! Keep on rockin' Robert and I'll keep on bluesin'! Blues...bluesing, umm blueson, nope, gotta stick with bluesin'!
Mark☮
Was the OD-3 the silver label or the newer Malaysia build?
Awesome .... thank you
The Blues Driver has yellow writing on it so it matches the other pedals
Thank you for this nice review 👌🏽
If you overdrive through an overdrive then distort an overdrive for the purposes of an overdrive, is it overdriven or distorted or overdriven distortion
I don’t know, but my head hurts now. LOL
me personally i would include the angry driver in this too.
I didn’t own that one yet. LOL
I've used the BD2 and OS2, they are both decent pedals. I own a BOSS OD-1 (their first OD) and SD-2 (dual overdrive), they are solid pedals too, I know a lot of people go gaga when they see my OD-1 but it's pretty much a booster, no tone control. Cool video, I'm sure it takes an amount of time and detail to make and I appreciate that.
The OD-1 is the ORIGINAL Tube Screamer! There’s a lot of history behind that pedal, that’s why they’re worth so much.
Robert's Guitar Dungeon sure is. I bought it for 30 bucks I think in ‘79. Silver screw and also only has a momentary LED which from what I’ve been told was to that you held down the pedal to check if the battery was good. Weird huh? I also have an old TC Booster that when the pedal is depressed the LED would fade out to not drain the battery, but TC made it so on an adapter the LED stayed lit when the pedal was on.
@@marksguitars5617 IN '79 ???
@@marianito.sk8 yes, if it wasn't '79 then late '78 or early '80, don't have the receipt anymore, wasn't a big deal when I got it so the date was not as important as it is today.
@@marksguitars5617 WOW mate! nice story... Is your son playing with it?? I'm 31 years old and my son is 5, and its exciting that the instruments which I started to learn, now he is using to learn how to play... We wanna keep'em until I be granfather hahaha. CHEERS FROM CHILE.
That in tune ? 😂
Which one did you prefer ?
I usually run the level all the way up (seems to bring up the lows overall) on mine...drive at half.....tone at half or zero (SD-1)
I can’t help thinking we would have heard more of a difference between the pedals had your dry signal been completely clean to start with.
I almost never demo overdrive pedals through a completely clean amp because that’s not what they’re designed for. That’s what distortion pedals are for. Overdrive pedals are designed to enhance the sound of an already overdriven amplifier. That’s how I prefer to demo them because that’s how most people use them.
@@RobertWJackson I don't think you can say that of all overdrives at all. I think that is quite misleading. The sd-1 in particular works well into a clean amp, especially for that low overdrive "break up" sound. I have no experience with the od-3 but the original od-1 was also seemingly designed to be good with a clean amp. The os_2 with the colour knob turned anti clockwise is essentially an sd-1, so same applies. Most people I know use overdrive for that break up sound, especially the ones you have shown here. To be fair i think overdrives can work well either for that breakup sound or for use in front of an already overdriven amp. My point is that for that heavier overdrive sound (which I think is what you personally favour ) all these pedal are ok but there may be some better choices available.
You’re right, it’s NOT true of all overdrives. I happen to love the BD-2 into a clean amp, especially cranked all the way up. Same with the Digitech Screamin’ Blues and also the OCD. But generally speaking, most overdrives into a clean amp sounds awfully thin and needs more balls underneath it, hence the term “overdrive”.
@@RobertWJackson the sd-1 is not bad for that cranked sound too but to get that heavier sound I agree it need to be in an already slightly overdriven amp. I can see that the blues driver might be better for that heavier sound. The pedal I like for that heavier sound is the mxr distortion +. It's an oddly named pedal because to me it sounds like a heavier overdrive or fuzz ather than a true distortion.
Well, the Blues Driver is Boss’ Bluesbreaker circuit. That’s where it gets its name. While it is a great blues overdrive, it also does A LOT more than that, which is why I did a video dedicated to it just a few weeks ago.
Love the Guitar! I’ve been going through the same thing only with my old pro co. RAT pedal It’s been my go to distortion lately. Love the videos, Rock on!
Looking forward to a Boss Distortion pedal shootout. Hope you will try what I always do and roll back the tone control all the way to see if the sound gets muddy or sings beautifully without any fried chicken. To me this goofy idea of trying the tone rollback on all my distortions really became a big deal when shooting out my high gain fire boxes. Sold most of those muddy ones and kept the ones that can give me that wonderful tone on tap if I turn up the pedal gain and roll back all the trebles.
Very cool Robert. Thx!
🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I was glad when you said there wasn't much difference, because I thought... I don't hear much difference. LOL. I have a couple more pedals you might like to demo in line. I have a Wampler modified BD-2 and the Angry Charlie BOSS pedal.
I’ve wanted to get ahold of an Angry Charlie since that pedal came out. I’d also love to check out the Wampler modded BD-2.
They all sound the same. But the one pedal missing from your setup is a tuner!
k
OD-3 was awesome! (I also liked BD-2)
My only boss pedals are the turbo overdrive n my trusty HM-2, which they will pry from my cold dead hands. Use the turbo on bass sometimes for that type o negative sound
I like the OD-2. It’s a little noisy, but that’s what happens with that much gain is introduced into the signal.
Ever try the Bass OD?
I still love my
SD1 for boosting my
Amps !!
honestly it felt like they were all 20$ behringers, i mean the blues drive was the only clean one. was it that the pedals are fuzzy? i personally didnt like the yellow pedals when i used them in real life so maybe my ears just dont like boss distortion in general, i even hated the ds1.
These aren’t distortion pedals, they’re overdrive pedals. Entirely different category.
Wonder what they sound like all together !
I can’t hear difference. When the signal is so saturated it’s difficult to tell.
The 3 Rd one sounds good to me but I like them all stay safe and keep shredding ... I enjoy your videos keepem coming
Smoother and rounder than bd2,its great
My fav's...Blues Driver and Super Overdrive
The " i before e" rule seems to have more exceptions to it than not. I only noticed 'cause now we are forced in helping our kids with schoolwork at home.
Yep, it’s got quite a few exceptions. LOL
love, love, LOVE my SD-1!!!
i like the old super feed backer pedal boss. but what is on your floor i like em all, but the sd-1 is my fave out of those. cheers
The DF-2 will actually be featured in a video on my channel in a couple of weeks. ;)
Will this series of videos end with four distortion / overdrives all tuned to make the same sound ? I nominate SD-1, DS-1, BD-2 and the MT-2. I think you can find the sound that they all have in common and spiral out from there. I'm looking forward to the distortions, these videos have been great.
Thanks man! Honestly I’m kind of just making it up as I go until I have some new gear arrive to demo for you guys. LOL
Excellent!!!!!!
If you're happy and you know it clap your hands!
I could hear some Ace in that lick.
I found preferring the Super Overdrive. Of course, purely subjective. Thanks for the great video.
Good choice!
I got the blues driver (bd 2) but I also really liked the overdrive (od 3) it was a hard choice between both but in the endi got the blues driver (bd 2) first I was not sure if I did the right choice but after a week with the pedal I know I did the right choice the both are great pedals but I like the bd 2 a little more it’s just more my style. Great vid and that’s a sick guitar!
OD-2 is what i use to play old Danzig Covers and it sounds perfect in my Marshal DSL with a SG 🌶🌶
Would welcome a re visit with a level check
See my most recent video.
Mr. Dungeon, I was hoping you were going to play them all at the same time, just for fun.
BD my fav as well
I think people get confused with overdrive pedals, these are not tube screamer pedals. Apples and oranges really. These are all of the same type of fruit 🍎. These pedals produce an asymmetrical wave patter, they are better in my opinion if you are on the quest for higain, asymmetrical overdrives work better with SS amps too since they are asymmetrical as well. If the OD3 is supposed to be like an OD-1? Man not even close, the mxr is closer. I have tube screamers as well, they are just different.
The OD-1 was actually the original Tube Screamer. The Tube Screamer is literally the OD-1 circuit with a tone control added to it. Boss then came out with the SD-1 to compete with it, and is also an OD-1 with a tone control. The OD-3 is a much more modern version of the OD-1 circuit.
I think its better if u do real clean dry channel for the comparison. Then only we can see the push of the signal.
k
Was that Black Curtains by Megadeth I heard??
😉
Thats a kick ass guitar tho!
Your "dry" signal is not dry at all my friend!
Moist.
When the "clean" tone is already breaking up it totally gimps an overdrive comparison. I'm trying to remember how much his signal was breaking up beforehand and then trying to 'hear' what the pedal is doing... it's impossible. I appreciate dude's effort, but I am not alone; the comments are full of people saying the sound is muffled, all the same, etc.
k
Anyone else?.....Anyone educate me on what I'm doing wrong?.....my CS2 is noisey??
CS-2 or CS-3?
God,I hate to sound like a broken record. That JCM-900 needs nothing. I realize Robert that you need content to talk about, and you do a great job at doing it. It's just my humble opinion, but when I see fantastic gear going unused it freaks me out haha. And damnit...tune that guitar! ❤😁👍🤘
I didn’t use the 900 in this video.
@@RobertWJackson I know, as that's the problem!😁 saturated MUD! That's why I stated that I know you need content. But with that in your arsenal...why bother?
Od3
Oh shit, they are all the same!
Surely the dry signal ought to be clean for the purposes of demoing the OD pedals?
Who actually uses overdrive pedals into a clean amp? That’s what distortion pedals are for.
Mom used to always say that to me
Your mom used to always say that to you.
Weird right 🤣🤣🤣
🤷🏻♂️
Blues driver all the way.
Being that your dry signal is already breaking up, it doesnt let us hear the pedals tones for what they are. Please do one from a clean signal. Maybe even from a single coils also.
k
The amp is so distorted and bassy ?! Sorry we can hear no differences........
k
Black Curtains
FALLLLLLLLL
Everyone sounds the same probably because there all going through a profiler
I’ve never owned or used a profiler before in my life. LOL 🤣🤣🤣
Maybe next time not with active pickups testing?
There were no active pickups used in this video dude.
Only own CS2.....seems noisy!
This was not a good shootout. . U need a clean amp and clean guitar . Using a heavy guitar doesn't present the real character. All sounded like heavy distortion pedals
Moist.
Recently it seems like the ads have significantly increased when watching UA-cam. Will not be surfing UA-cam as often as I used to. The content providers need to complain if they can't control this on their channels!
That’s not the creators, that’s UA-cam. They used to run mid-roll ads on any video over 10 minutes, but they recently changed that to videos over 8 minutes. Not only did they do that, but they added MULTIPLE mid-roll ads to EVERY video over 8 minutes, whether the creator had that enabled on a particular video or not. There is also no way to go in and change that setting across an entire channel, so each video has to be adjusted individually, which is extremely time consuming for 300+ videos. So give your C- to UA-cam, not me.
@@RobertWJackson Updated my post.
Trust me, we’ve complained A LOT. Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to matter much to UA-cam.
You can never go wrong with Boss Pedals.
You aren't setting them up right, or like Zakk Wylde. Levels on 10 and Drive on 0 ,tone at 1o'clock thru a dirty amp. Levels all the way up, drive all the way down. My Marshalls sound awesome. I still want to use the awesome distortion from my Marshalls. That's why I play Marshall.
Have you played more than one overdrive pedal before?
@@RobertWJackson yes. Been playing over 40 years. Same age as Zakk Wylde.
So, in 40+ years of playing guitar, you’ve NEVER tried another setting on an overdrive pedal other than level on 10, drive on 0, and tone at 1 o’clock into a dirty amp?
OF COURSE I HAVE... I discovered this setting from Zakk Wylde, also my son who is awesome on guitar.
Have you ever heard of, or tried this setting??
Please try it. I didn't think at first it would work, but I found out it works great for higher gain setting, amps.
By the way, just love your channel. I find it very constructive, great, informative.
Of course I have. I’m not saying it’s not a good setting in a lot of cases. But that doesn’t mean I’m wrong for liking other settings, as well.
lol they sound alll the same.
k
Whoa… way out of tune. I would love to hear a redo of this video in tune and with better audio.
Moist.
Tune ur guitar plz
Moist.
Stop clapping
k
He's right Robert. I didn't notice it the first time I watched it. I did this time. it's not life or death. As you get better you can work on those nervous ticks. Or keep it as a signature thing. I'm sure you remember the Gong show,👏 make it funny. Put the time signatures in on the hand claps. love the channel.
I think this dude is just a hobbiest. He appears to me very amateur. No offense man.
I’ve actually been selling gear for a living for over 15 years, and I’ve been playing guitar since I was 8 years old. I admit I’m not the best recording engineer in the world, that’s never been my forte (though I have learned a lot since I started doing UA-cam). So while nobody is going to hire me to produce their next record, I assure you that this ain’t my first rodeo.
Badly miked/recorded. And what were you thinking, using an already distorted channel for the "dry" signal?
k
A fecking tuner pedal would have beaten them all! 😅
k
