I love my OD-2, a few interesting things about its circuit as well, the design is entirely discrete/transistor based using a simulated Opamp circuit (like the Blues Driver and OD-3) and unlike the OD-1 and SD-1 circuits, doesn’t have the opamp tone shaping/control stage, and just uses a simple RC network tone control, which to me gives the OD-2 less of a mid hump and a flatter response. The Turbo mode actually switches to a different transistor circuit but also cuts the supply voltage to 5v to increase the compression, gain etc… pretty unique design compared to others.

I remember going to a busy guitar store years ago to try a Boss OD and there were like five different yellow pedals and I had no idea which one to ask to try and ended up playing either an SD-2 or an OD-2 and not buying it. Retailers were s it. They're still scum today. BOSS could have and should have installed a machine to sell their pedals. They would have sold more than triple the quantity than they did. Retailers really did hurt sales in a big way. BOSS is a victim of their own success. You can only be so popular until guys get sick of them and leave the brand. Broken pedals led guys into the hands of repair crooks. This brand eventually attracted real scum. Real sick in the head scum who bought up everything in sight and this horrible addition hurt families and the second hand market. Those fools were applying all kinds of lunacy logic to their buying practices. It was horrible being near or associated with these types of scum buyers and scalpers. I was far better off leaving BUYING BOSS PEDALS than staying amongst the lunacy. Retailers explained nothing about the pedals. But unfortunately for them BOSS did create a massive push back against them and a whole nother type of expensive pedal culture appeared out of nowhere and almost destroyed BOSS. To their credit they just ignored this whole new pedal culture and kept on making. In doing so, they exposed the $500 + pedal scam. TGFT! Unfortunately now we have young liars spreading misinformation to the public.

The OD-3 works in front of a clean or not-to-dirt Amp. Stacked with a TS, SD or Ge-7 in front for great leads and works with a FuzzFace in front beautiful. Swiss army knife and best of all.

I snagged one just to be safe since I’m an odr-1 fanatic lol. Anyways, I love the way you compare pedals and include the history side of things as well as component changes etc, and would love to see something like that with the Nobels odr-1. Not sure if you have any originals though and if you don’t, it’s way too expensive to go that route lol lucky the new 30th anniversary is the original sought after circuit (with an added bass cut), but either way really love your videos and appreciate what you do 🙏🙏🎛️🎛️
Great video!! I’ve had all but the OD-2r. I still have my OD-1 and OD-3 and always have one of them on my board. The OD-1 sounds best with my Les Paul. The OD-3 is a great utility pedal: clean boost to main overdrive. I tried the OD-1x but was disappointed with its precise overdrive tone as well. It wasn’t flexible enough for me and it didn’t stack well with other pedals. Every combination sounded the same. Love it’s look though!!
Great video! You really can't go wrong with Boss. I love the 2r (and the DS2 for that matter), but you made me want to give the OD-3 a try. I don't like Tubescreamers, so previously hearing that the OD-3 had that sound, I didn't really give it a second thought. I have an SD-1 and SD-2 and had an OD-2. All great pedals. If you have an expression pedal or a stereo volume pedal with a Balance fuction and a Y cable, you can blend the crunch and lead modes together.
Never really found my use for the OD3 yet. My least favourite of them. Like my OD2-R and SD-1, and also like the OD-1X that i think works great into an already driven amp
Great review! The OD2 is a sleeper. The OD-3 is among my least favorite Boss pedals, as I favor the TS9DX for that type of sound. For boosting Marshalls it's useless ... TS808 and SD1 are the way to go
how do you find boosting a Marshall with the OD2? lock up the wolves by Dio was recorded with them...can't understand how much of a difference made the OD2 tho
I find the OD-3 the best of the lot. I find all the others too nasal and thin. Both unpleasant and have a cheap and juvenile garage band sound. I run my rig into a Marshall JMP50 set to a just before breakup sound. I also run everything at unity gain. My board is actually in effect 3 boards. Each has its own Comp, Gate Delay and Verb. In a tune I treat the boards as if I have 3 pedals not 3 boards. Basically one for verse, chorus, middle 8. Collectively there are 65 pedals. I digress to make the point that using unity gain is not an option. I am a singer song writer doing all original material in a trio. I write the tunes to cover two guitars. A reviewer described the music as Sabbath like with Prog Rock sensibility. Close enough to get to the point that I have no time to do more than hit 3 switches in a tune and leave the guitar knobs wide open. I will soon be 77, LOL. My first dirt pedal was a Maestro Fuzz Tone FZ-1. It was the only manufactured dirt pedal on the planet. I had a choice of ...one. In the 80's I was a product specialist for Ibanez. It gave me an easy way to meet the hands on pioneers of design and ask questions. I literally was allowed to read the Gibson daily's from the 50's on the results from R&D. today these things would be literally top secret, LOL. I still on occasion get to talk to the best friend and assistant a guy named Leo. Leo kept every scrap note he made. Many were drawings. One from 1952 was of a guitar to be made in 1953 but it never was. The Strat was made instead in 54. It took me 4 years but to get it nailed but I now have a prototype. 🙂 I also review but they are written reviews. I kept count, LOL To date 2,826. I love your review. You are easily in with the top 5 reviewers. Simply not to be overlooked. THANX for what I know is an incredible amount of hard work.
I own an OD1 w/ Raytheon from 1978. How do I power it? Can’t seem to find any information on what it’s supposed to be taking. Surely it’s more than a simple isolated 9v DC from a Strymon Ojai.
It should use Boss ACA adaptor which is an unregulated 9V power supply, center negative. The modern/normal Boss PSA is 9V regulated. What does this mean? Well, I don't know exactly but the Boss PSA or any other modern/normal 9V power adaptor you use is a bad fit. Inside the OD-1 voltage drops below 9V when using 9V regulated power supply (like Boss PSA) but the Boss ACA apparently can avoid that (as far as I've understood it is in reality more than 9V). What you can and should use instead is a 12V regulated (modern/normal) power supply or a 9V battery to power your ACA pedal. Google "Boss ACA adaptor" if you want to know more.
Hey Jason, do you happen to have ever tried the OD200? It has got an OD1X amongst many others. I do agree with what you said about the digitalization of digital drives as it is to "precise". On the other hand, specifically, individual notes come out so refined, so clear, thats the part i love about the OD1X. When i like to fool around i mostly use the OD1X setting to get the most clearity. Anyway, i subbed a while ago and am now binging your Boss comparison videos and after that all the rest! Love your content, man!

Am Looking to add a Boss SD-1 very Soon .... Just Because, LOL. Haven't really had much interest in The OD series maybe because I rarely see then available on used market. The OD-1 is the master and one of my all time favourites along with the the MXR Fat Sugar. OD-2 is very 80s and OD-3 doesn’t do anything for me. It’s a bit too thick. The BD-2 Blues Driver is nicer. SD-1 is another classic. OD-X I’d avoid like the plague! Cool video and tasty licks. I use a daisy chain after a PSA unit to power an ACA 12v.
Those expressions ;) i know what it means if the security of a building has to tighten up, but what does it mean that the OD-1 can 'tighten up' your overdriven amp ? The OD-1 does attenuates the high and low frequencies a bit as well as all overdrives based on a 'tube screamer' circuit (as it is now mostly known although the OD-1 was the first ;)) so may ge tgst is ehst you mean with 'tighten up' ? ;)

To all viewers, you're hearing the guitar and the pedal out of mix. If the pedal sounds good... the question is, does it fit the mix. Of course, if you're a bedroom player, nobody cares. And, you can fit it into mix in post too using eq.

The OD-1X is one of my favorite dirt pedals. I actually enjoy the high gain sounds from it. In a live context the clarity is addictive.
The problem is guys have over 500 favourite distortion pedals and so now nothing makes any sense any more 🤔 😑

I recommend the OD-3 for those 'classic rock' tones, it's not as high gain as the OD-2r in turbo mode, but it's way more responsive.
