In the early 70's a good friend of mine worked part time and weekends at his grandfather's funeral home. He and his buddy only had a one speaker radio to listen to music while they worked. He convinced his grandfather to buy a portable stereo 8-track tape player, based on the premise that they would be able to play organ music at the grave site. Things worked out well, the young guys would listen to rock after school and his grandfather played appropriate music during the funerals. The day came for my friend to help setup for the funeral services at the grave site. He forgot to remove his rock tape from the machine. With the family and guests seated and as the services started, his grandfather pressed the start button and over the speakers was heard, Steppenwolf "God damn the pusher man!". The music ended abruptly and my friend said he could see every vein popping out of his grandfathers head. He knew he was in big trouble . Try something from their second album, "At Your Birthday Party"

This and Born To Be Wild are their most known songs but The Pusher is the song that really shows you what they could do. 16 Greatest Hits is a really good album.
Steppenwolf’s sound on this song sort of embodies the psychedelic sound that hit in the late sixties and early seventies. I was born in ‘64, but I had sisters and brothers who were much older than I was, so I was introduced to this kind of music much earlier than most. I love it all.
Their song Born to be Wild is the first known instance of the term Heavy Metal used in the music industry. Yes, it is in reference to motorcycles, but, could be argued it's the origination of that term as it relates to a music genre.
Born to Be Wild is fantastic, and I agree about the Heavy Metal comment, but I would argue that The Beatles Helter Skelter is the first Heavy Metal song.
@@NVprods Let's not go down the first road for first heavy metal song, it's too dangerous. The Kinks and the Yardbirds might have something to say about that too, among others.
Robin Trower ‘Bridge of Sighs’ is one of the best albums ever. ‘Too Rolling Stoned’ ‘& Day of the Eagle’ are definite bangers you should consider. He is 75 and still rolling! Another good ELO song to consider is ‘Fire on High’ -great instrumental. Can’t wait to hear magic carpet ride. We used to rollerskate to this back in the 70s😄
Let's make our voices heard to get the guys to listen to some TROWER! I have recommended more than once that they listen to Lady Love bc Alex loves cow bell so much.
Born To Be Wild is even more of a timeless jam of theirs IMO. You guys also really need to hit Time Of The Season, by the Zombies. Same era, totally different vibe, but equally timeless.
I can't believe you've never ever heard "Born to be Wild" You must have heard snippets in a commercial or a movie. I'm sure you'll recognize it. It's truly an anthem song.
My dad loves your channel. I’m 27 and I think I was born with this song in my DNA...not sure how y’all managed to escape hearing all of these hits😏, y’all are infectious!
Great group , so proud of my fellow Canadians. Wish they had recorded more. This song is Iconic for the times. Love watching this generation listening to the old tunes. Never want that song to end ! That's probably a cover for the radio.
This song brings back memories of seeing Steppenwolf on Ed Sullivan’s Sunday night variety show with my parents. My father was horrified. I thought they were really cool. Early psychedelic rock. Their anthemic classic was Born to Be Wild. My parents’ generation feared the end of civilization as they knew it due to long hair rock music and drugs. This band embodied that.
Keep in mind that a lot of us were tripping on acid while listening to this stuff. LSD was a lot purer back then, so the sounds in these songs really produced a lot of incredible psychedelic images in our heads that some thought they were actually seeing, lol.
Excellent point. Gentleman I prescribe 1 dose 25 to 30 micrograms of high purity LSD-25 ingested orally. Treatment to be at secure location for at least 12 hours. Ancillary treatment materials suggested:Art supplies, musical instruments but no video recording to preserve presidential candidacy options. And musical playlist that includes this track. Have fun and its the third star to the right and straight on till morning.
I wondered when we'd get around to admitting it. I've done my share of acid, shrooms, and strawberry masculine. Good times. Definitely a music enhancer.
@@JeffTaylor-tr7my Yeah. These two need be transported, to the Day; tiz the only way they'd understand derZeitgeist. As it is, they are grooving on the jam, not it's essence. Something interesting... My step-father had a classic Mercedes Gullwing for sale. John Kay (singer in Steppenwolf) came to our house with an assistant to look at it. He had on dark glasses and never said a word, his assistant did all the talking. This was right after Born to Be Wild came out. He bought the car for a lot of $$$.
They got their start in the Yorkville(Toronto) coffee house scene in the 60’s as Jack London & the Sparrow...at one time Rick “Superfreak” James was their singer before John Kay....the rest of the side after Magic Carpet Ride is a great blues/boogie joint...the first side has Don’t Step on the Grass Sam....and basically a reverse Born to be Wild in Faster Than the Speed of Life....great band
There's also the Politician version, in me head to even on paper, and yes the Politician does not care "if you live or if you die" (plays well when the Politician has literally been the cause of torturing your daily life for years, and nothing to do with President Trump or Federal).
@@thanksfernuthin That's because there never was such a thing as a "pusher". Sure, there were dealers, but they never had to push their products on anybody. Customers seek out dealers. Nobody ever bought drugs that wasn't looking to by drugs.
@@SciPunk215 I had to reply to this type of comment before. I don't know where you grew up, but where I did, yes there were Pushers. They worked the elementary and Jr. High schools (Middle schools now). By high school there was not much of a need to push, they were mostly hooked by then. If you didn't have them hanging around your schools you were lucky. One other point, the pusher would also push their drugs onto a regular customer that was trying to get off the drugs and break their habit. To give you an idea of the neighborhood I grew up in. The pushers tried to make out like you needed this to be cool. But if you didn't, you would be harassed to and from school. Usually by someone they would set up to bully you. You would end up fighting your way to school, at school, and on your way home. If you were lucky it was only one or two. I even learned to handle three. Had my nose broke about 4 times, got stabbed at 14 (this guy was in his mid 20's - i called him a dumb ass after he did it and threw the knife away), broke my hand on a guys head one time (he was in his early 20's and I was about 13 or 14 - oh I didn't lose that fight). You get the picture. You also needed to have some good friends of your own that weren't afraid to mix it up with just about anyone. Because where I grew up, that's just the way it was. There are thousands more just like me. If you didn't have to then, just consider yourself lucky, but don't believe there wasn't such a thing as a pusher.
You guys MUST do some Kinks. I'm not going to give a history lesson of the group, you can do the research on your own but in short they are massively underrated as far as mid 1960's English rock groups go. Ray Davies is one of the best lyricists bar none and his younger brother Dave is one of the most influential guitarists in all of rock. They have tons of great songs but you really need to start with their very first hit You Really Got Me.
This was such a great top40 song when I was in high school. I remember hearing this, Time Has Come Today by the Chambers Brothers and Sly and the Family Stone Everyday People on the school bus on the way to school and coming home. It was always jam time. Glad you liked it!
I have tried & tried to get reactor channels to do that. Since nobody has, maybe they are all afraid to be the first. It has EXCELLENT organ playing. Phe-no-me-nal organ. If I play it for someone, I always like to see if people can figure out who the Green Eyed Lady is.
"Magic Carpet Ride" is one of the best 60's psychedelic songs. The mid section is amazing. Goldie McJohn's keyboards are great. The singers name is John Kay guys.
Hey guys . . . . . Try "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly! It is the complete one side of the album that came out in 1968! And, as always, thank you guys for listening to the entire song with no stops!
You must be young and haven't been subjected to this song a hundred times. For rock fans my age this is the most mentioned example of overindulgence. Try listening to it not stoned. Stick to the short version. LOL
@@dynodon9182 ........I'm 63 and was there when it came out! But, yeah, I know what you mean......it may have gone the way of "Hotel California" in the minds of some! When I first came to the States in 1970 I was 10 years old and Magic Carpet Ride was playing on my little Airline headphones as we landed. Fell in love with Steppenwolf right then and there. Make a long story short became a pro musician later on in the 70s and always loved Steppenwolf, especially Goldy McJohn's Hammond Organ playing, which was actually Cutting Edge for that time. About four years ago I was in a Steppenwolf tribute band and got to play for Goldy's birthday party in Seattle with Goldy himself. It was a crowning moment in my life, especially as he gave me a big thumbs up at the end of Rockin Me, and told the audience I played it just like the record. Goldy passed away shortly after that. How Steppenwolf never made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is beyond me, as they have influenced so many musicians. Their catalog is wide and varied. And some of it very political. The song Monster is very apropos for these times. Thanks for checking out Steppenwolf!
Jethro Tull and so many other worthy bands also have been overlooked. They made a new category a few years back for songs and Born to be wild was the first song admitted but the band has still been ignored.
Yes. "Born to be wild" is the ultimate biker song. Anytime you see a movie where you start to see bikers driving, you know that this song will be playing soon!
It blows my mind that there are people ... music people ... who haven't heard this song which, of course, we might be heard a few times a day back when it "dropped" as the kids say and got radio play. I'm SO glad you guys are being exposed to the tunes that helped create the times that created the tunes ... and shaped our minds.
Steppenwolf man, great choice. I see you haven't checked out "The Yardbirds" yet. That band featured one of the three greatest rock guitarists of all time - Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck. Check out the song - Under, Over, Sideways Down. That song is kind of in the same vein as Magic Carpet Ride - Ethereal, mystical and definitely with psychedelic overtones.
Phil Ochs -- Outside of a Small Circle of Friends. Can't Live -- wasn't that on the same BSW album? John Denver -- Greatest Hits Oh, and Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks He's the Walkin' One and Only
Joachim Fritz Krauledat (stage name John Kay) was the lead singer of Steppenwolf and was born in Germany. As a teenager he escaped over (or under?) the Berlin Wall to freedom in the West.
It’s been a couple of months since you dropped this one... and I waited on purpose to check it out, cause I KNEW 1. that you would love it, but 2., it would have me missing my good friend Goldy McJohn (keyboardist and founding member of Steppenwolf). Goldy passed a couple of years ago and he would have loved your reactions - so thanks (as always) for the major respect shown for the iconic bangers that laid the groundwork for Rock yet to come. I know Goldy is smiling! ❤️
Goldy was an absolutely awesome member of this band. His keyboard work on all of the albums he played on was tasty AF. For me, Never Too Late was his shining star, in addition to Magic Carpet Ride of course.
I grew up in a small East Texas town of under a thousand people and on the City Cafe jukebox when we are shooting pool in the back room this song and the flip side Born to be wild Ware played almost constantly the entire time we were shooting pool. We were all Junior high the early high school at the time, what great memories! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇲
"The Pusher" was written by Hoyt Axton and so was "Snowblind Friend".among others. "Magic Carpet Ride" is a 3 minute acid trip! Steppenwolf was a psychedelic band after all. There is a recording out there of them playing at The Matrix in 1966 that is very much a trip.
Your faces at 6:08-6:10 were great. I died laughing, because I knew what was coming and was just waiting for your reactions. You did not disappoint. Thanks!
Hopefully they won't get pushed to the side and forgotten, but put into new polls, until they have all been heard. Specifically Inna Gotta Da Vida, which I thought was just slightly more banger than this one.
Filet Knife59 There are in the history of rock, only a few songs that continue to amaze you. Forget the early Beatles (too much Pop), but Born to be Wild still is an anthem that every biker recognizes. If this song came out today, it would be groundbreaking.
Great reaction. Great song. Brings me back, hadn't heard it in a while. How about some Faces, soon? Fantastic late 60s, early 70s band with legendary personnel. Rod Stewart when he was a rocker, Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Lane, Kenny Jones, Ian McLagan. Didn't last long but burned bright and partied hard.

Same spot in the song? I wouldn’t be surprised. I know some Boston songs make me tear up a bit. In happiness of course
Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf.
It'll melt your faces off.
I thought this was "settled law". The term HEAVY METAL came from BORN TO BE WILD by STEPPENWOLF.
You, Sir, are correct!
Ha! You beat me to it.
Boys, you are reliving my music 🎶 history! Music was EVERYTHING in those years! 😊 💕
There’s a reason that this is “classic rock”. This song inspired many people to play music.
ELO!!!
Oh Robin Trower! Gentlemen Please! We beseech you....listen to some Robin Trower sometime soon!
I really believe A&A would enjoy listening to the entire Bridge of Sighs album... The songs kind of "breeze" into each other. It's a great trip!!
Let's make our voices heard to get the guys to listen to some TROWER! I have recommended more than once that they listen to Lady Love bc Alex loves cow bell so much.
PLS, PLS, PLS listen to some ROBIN TROWER dudes!
I am 67-years-old and I love you two! You listen to my music, which I also love. You guys are adorable!!!
Born To Be Wild is even more of a timeless jam of theirs IMO. You guys also really need to hit Time Of The Season, by the Zombies. Same era, totally different vibe, but equally timeless.
I’ve always liked Crystal Blue Persuasion by Tommy James and The Shondells.
Yes to all of the above
Absolutely right bro. How can you leave 'Born To Be Wild' out = probably thee standout tune of the 'Easy Rider' movie's soundtrack for a start
@@kimberelydavis379 Great Song. They had quite a few good ones.
That song with a little more sauce is "Born to Be Wild".
This should tell about the future of rock. Fifty years ago and still great
If that’s the true, then we are looking at VERY miserable music until about 2070 based upon the shite we hear on radio now.
You've already heard 'Born To Be Wild', you just don't remember when, or where....
@Les Hubbell
Damn it’s one of those?! That’s how more than a feeling was haha, instantly recognized the chorus! Haha.

Probably on a GEICO commercial.

Truth! ✌❤
I wondered when we'd get around to admitting it. I've done my share of acid, shrooms, and strawberry masculine. Good times. Definitely a music enhancer.
Ina Gadda da vida ... more head music of the 60’s. I can verify this statement 😉
@@JeffTaylor-tr7my Yeah. These two need be transported, to the Day; tiz the only way they'd understand derZeitgeist. As it is, they are grooving on the jam, not it's essence. A quarter of a four-way Osley's Sunshine for the each would be the clincher for the Gnosis Attain. On return from their TRIP trip, may they look into that video maker and sayyy_ “We, have, been, REALED!” diggit ( heyy, guys, you got two-quarters left> whatcha gonna do! ) (hee)
" Born to be Wild" " "Snow Blind Friend" " " Monster" etc.... Great band headed by John Kay.
Best three for the next three!
Snow Blind Friend is one of my favorite Steppenwolf songs. The lyrics are so personal and tells an all to familiar story.
Steve Carlisle yes yes yes! Loved these songs as a kid.
Monster. Make sure you do the ten minute lp version. A great anti-war tune.
@@Shaulfaulkner "Snow Blind Friend" and "The Pusher" were written by singer/songwriter Hoyt Axton. Some will remember him as the dad in "Gremlins".
This track for me was always the perfect bridge between late '60's psychedelic to early '70's hard rock.
Yes!
Oh gosh…I grew up listening to this music. My brother was 8 yrs older than me so fortunately I heard all the stuff from the 60’s and then I was a teen in the 70’s. It’s so great watching you guys react to all the oldies. Good times and good music!
Sixties anthem. "Born to be Wild" even more so.
The car was probably a gift John Kaye was giving someone special , I recently learned John was legally blind thats why he always wears dark glasses.
@@lynnbrowning6296 Right. Or maybe he collected classic cars for an investment.
@@ammie8659 maybe
The car was a gift to his wife , Jutta . John is not only legally blind , but also extremely light sensitive .
I imagine he even slept with dark glasses.
My favorite Steppenwolf song.
You have to listen to “Born to be Wild”. And “Rock Me”. They got their start with the Movie “Easy Rider”.
Don't forget their cover of Hoyt Axton's "The Pusher."
Rock me wasnt that great but born topbe wild a killer along with the long version of the pusher
Hoochie coochie man!
Rock me is a great song!
The Pusher is about heroin addiction, and really expresses the feeling of hate toward the pusher.
It's weird they don't know what a "Pusher" is, isn't it? I guess that's a good thing.
There's also the Politician version, in me head to even on paper, and yes the Politician does not care "if you live or if you die" (plays well when the Politician has literally been the cause of torturing your daily life for years, and nothing to do with President Trump or Federal).
@@Wolfwolveswolf Interesting interpretation, didn't occur to me then, even though opposition to the Vietnam war was a common theme.
I fuckin love u guys! Open minds open ears and open hearts! Especially rush!
I guess you boys just went on the Magic Carpet Ride we all went on back then.
Yasss!
"You Really Got Me" is considered to be the mainstream breakthrough for "hard rock." It basically codified the genre.
oh yeah, Waterloo Sunset, Lola, Death of a Clown, Well Respected Man, Powerman- time for Andy and Alex to get kinky!
That’s assuming they haven’t heard the Kinks..,but they he ent seem to have heard much of anything despite being musicians 😊
I got to see them in the mid eighties. Omg it was so good I danced in my chair. The only time I did that🤣
Love you both closed your eyes at the same time and rode the music together. Good music has that impact
"Hold your head up" by Argent.
You sir are a legend for that suggestion
This is the song that said the party has started. John Kay’s voice was awesome.
This was such a great top40 song when I was in high school. I remember hearing this, Time Has Come Today by the Chambers Brothers and Sly and the Family Stone Everyday People on the school bus on the way to school and coming home. It was always jam time. Glad you liked it!
Another goodie form that era would be Sugar Loaf,...."Green Eyed Lady"
I second that!
And not just great organ. Bass! Lead guitar! Drumming!
I concur completely!
The Chambers Brothers - "Time has Come Today"
"Magic Carpet Ride" is one of the best 60's psychedelic songs. The mid section is amazing. Goldie McJohn's keyboards are great. The singers name is John Kay guys.
John Goadsby aka Goldie McJohn. Not only was he a great keyboardist - his Afro should be in the Hall of Fame! ;)
They were playing it for AM radio if you caught it live they would play on…
He is German!
Saw Steppenwolf in the early 70’s Fox Theatre in Detroit! Awesome the girl I took has been my wife for 43 years!
Hey guys . . . . . Try "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly! It is the complete one side of the album that came out in 1968! The drum solo is even over 4 minutes long . . . . yes the drum solo is that long! If you dare to try and get the entire song on your video, it will become a mile-stone for your site!
And, as always, thank you guys for listening to the entire song with no stops!
I was just about to suggest this very tune. Very much in the same ballpark as Magic Carper Ride, but it does not suffer from ending too soon.
BUT, a good song is still a good song . . . and the long version gives one the full impact of the song. I have no doubt Andy & Alex will appreciate the song for what it is!
Btw story is it was supposed to be in the garden of Eden but substance intervened
In the Garden of Eden. That sounds like rock and/or roll. 17 minutes of sauce.
So glad you're getting to this. Born To Be Wild next by them. Opening music for a movie called Easy Rider.
That song is an all time classic.
This was Psychedelic! Perfect for the 60s !
Follow up with: Born to be wild
Probably their biggest hit
You can't beat Classic Rock of the 60s and 70s. So much great and timeless music.
“Born to Be Wild” might be even better! And more of a banger! You MUST listen to it!
Yes. "Born to be wild" is the ultimate biker song. Anytime you see a movie where you start to see bikers driving, you know that this song will be playing soon!
YES - GOTTA do Born to be Wild. There is not nearly as famous a Steppenwolf without it.
One of the great rock songs of all time. Born to be Wild was also one of the most played radio songs back in the day.
Got to do Born to be Wild and Sookie Sookie.
There is no way they haven't already heard "Born to Be Wild".
Have you ever reacted to The Chambers Brothers "Time Has Come Today?" Definitely memorable!
Bruce Feldman Yes! The long version!
Chamber brothers were awesome had the album sent it to my brother-in-law two years ago for his radio station had them all these years
Yeah, good choice.
Yep , it's got a similar vibe to magic carpet ride but much more powerful . It's brilliant .
I agree, Time, by the Chambers Brothers.
Guitarist Gateway Yardbirds = Jimmy/Jeff/Eric - NOTHING better
Okay guys. Blood, Sweat and Tears. "Spinning Wheel", "Lucretia Mac Evil" and "And When I Die".
Definitely.
Yes! David Clayton Thomas was one of the best vocalists to come out of the 60s.
Phil Ochs -- Outside of a Small Circle of Friends. Can't Live -- wasn't that on the same BSW album? John Denver -- Greatest Hits Oh, and Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks He's the Walkin' One and Only
Yes if the liked Chicago they would Blood Sweat and Tears

This band deserves to be in the rock& roll hall of fame. One of the greatest bands ever.
Born to be wild! John Kay singer and underrated guitarist!
This is one of the best driving songs ever. Period. No argument.
Keep diggin boys. There's gold in them 70s rock n roll hills.
Joachim Fritz Krauledat (stage name John Kay) was the lead singer of Steppenwolf and was born in Germany. As a teenager he escaped over (or under?) the Berlin Wall to freedom in the West.
Today I see alot of people walking around with "tombstones in their eyes.". The Pusher is on the soundtrack from the classic movie, "Easyrider."
Along with the next Steppenwolf selection: *"Born To Be Wild"* ! :-)
The Magic Carpet is music. "On a cloud of sound I drift in the night."

"Magic Carpet Ride" is a 3 minute acid trip! Steppenwolf was a psychedelic band after all. There is a recording out there of them playing at The Matrix in 1966 that is very much a trip.

Magic Carpet Ride is an absolute Banger!
Please don't forget to keep going back to the ones that didn't win their polls, too.
Hopefully they won't get pushed to the side and forgotten, but put into new polls, until they have all been heard. Specifically Inna Gotta Da Vida, which I thought was just slightly more banger than this one.
This and Born to be Wild were their masterpieces... high watermarks for late 60's classics.

Born to be Wild...features the first time the term “heavy metal” was used in a lyric.....as in: “heavy metal thunder”....
He knew he was in big trouble
