I learned during my time in the military to teach your subordinates your job and learn your supervisor's job. I could not force people to learn but those who wanted to learn, they knew as much as I do if we had enough time together. Chief, you are a good leader willing to teach your subordinates.

@dwayne7356 I went through a Sheet Metal Apprenticeship it was basically the same way,......but I did have 1 foreman who told me that "One cannot force a person to learn anything!.....you can only encourage them to learn something!"....from there I would show others tips here and there on how to work smarter, not harder!

Back in the late 60's, I noticed that the senior enlisted were just 'not making waves', just waiting for retirement.
(other than the Navigator and Medical, I never saw any Officer do Get dirty, hands on tasks (like troubleshooting).
I always thought it was my job to train my replacement. I hope that paid off as I left that ship unplanned (Appendicitis).

1978 at 15 yo I signed on a Panama ship as a deck boy. Scary and exciting. But after two weeks I knew my goal in life was to be a ships captain. I then worked hard and studied hard so at 26 yo I was a captain for the first time. During this journey I learned most from the bad officers!! I learned how not to behave. How I instead should be helpful, teach, listen, be loyal to the crew, never put the blame on anyone else (even if it was someone else onboard making a mistake) but also be firm in your decisions and trust yourself in your abilities.
It is a hard life at sea but to be honest I think it can be even harder for a seaman's wife who has to be home and take care of the children and our home.
Thanks for sharing your journey Chief!

Chief, you are not just a leader, teacher, follower, you are a philosopher. Your message with family, a father, a husband was very powerful. I am reminded of a message "Seek and thee shall find". Students who do not wish to learn are not students in my book. My best to you.

Good stuff. 1) Training your replacement. 2) My earliest 'scariest situation' in the Army was nearly going into the trees, while doing an Air Assault in an old Huey. 3) I recall, when I was a company Executive Officer, we were coming out of the field after an exercise. As XO, recovery operations was my world. We were short bodies, due to other Admin requirements, but I had a company of vehicles to be cleaned, for turn in. Rather than merely 'supervise', I took a track to the wash pit. While I was cleaning the engine bay, a vehicle pulled in alongside. It was a Humvee, towing a 105, with two NCO's. Next thing I heard was, 'Look at that, a First Lieutenant, working.'

I'm about the same age as the Chief and looking back on my college days I wish I'd had the foresight to plan more for the future. Things have worked out, but not without some serious corrections in the years since. I come here for the seafaring stuff but the Chief was dropping the serious life lessons on this one. I hope younger people are listening.

I was in charge of four cadets and it was my job to assign them watches and day work. I had a 3rd Engineer Unlimited License and would take a Day Third billet so I could teach the cadets. Most of the cadets came back as Third Engineers and would tell the other cadets about their time under my supervision😂.

I can tell you what my probably scariest time was fishing in the Bering Sea as a commercial fisherman. I was a brand-new greenhorn on my first trip and we had one of the worst storms I seen in the seven years I worked up there. On top of that we had to go on top of the Wheelhouse outside in the storm to try to get an eye on our buoys. The boat was rolling over to the 30 degree Mark or more maybe even 40. Winds were at 70 knots and better. All while me and a couple of other deckhands had to stand on top of the Wheelhouse and literally crawl from one spot to the next because you could not let go of whatever it was you were holding onto. I was scared I was going to go in the water. That was probably the most scared I've been up there. I had a couple other close calls but for the most part that was the most nervous I've been.

Chief, you know the academies focus on following orders and directives for the first (forth class) training especially. They subject you to all fashion of physical discomforts and situations to assess your ability to adapt, overcome and maintain focus on the correct actions to keep your ship in control. Keeping your focus, while others are lost in emotional distractions is the mark of a great prospective leader. This behavior separates the men (women) from the boys ( girls). It is not easy or intuitive. It can be learned and mastered, but cadets get little time during sea semester to demonstrate this fundamental skill. It can determine the future for cadets in a short time.

I built a swimming pool for Phillipineo from Manilla. Both he and his wife were gentle, generous people. She was a remarkable cook that shared treats, and he was the worldwide projects manager for a major oil company. We talked, and he spoke of difficulties he had experienced as I had bemoaned getting subcontractors to follow instructions, etc. "Me too!" He spoke of troubles on a huge North Seat drilling & production platform. 'I go personally to the North Sea and carefully instruct how everything MUST be done to ensure safe, successful operations.' "Well, I return a month later, and to my amazement, none of my careful directives had been carried out!" I fire everyone and shut down operations . Fire everyone from CO. Supervisors to the lowliest roustabout. Better start over!" 3000 people left the platform without a job. They didn't call him the "Gunilla from Manilla" for nothing.

Interesting as usual Chief. About how a person perceives their jobs due to early experiences.
My order of working on a yacht usually went like this:
Check in with the First Mate to set a time to review contract. Contact the head Steward to learn the ships protocol and behavior standards. Then the First Mate for a rundown on schedules of ship's daily activities and more protocol. Then the Chief engineer for a rundown of our job. But I never went without checking with the head Chef to ask if they would like something done also that we would add to the work order off the clock. Making the Chef happy was always advantageous to us if you know what I mean because some are incredible world class chefs.

I have been watching you for awhile now, and i enjoy your video's, if you could stretch these type of podcasts to twenty minutes, that would be great. I feel as though my mind gets involved in the stoyline, and then it's cut short, leaving me with a feeling that i had not been given that perfect time when one walks away feeling satisfied that my btain completed something. I feel blessed that in tough situations i am able to remain calm, get through the problem, and be fine. I have seen many people who just can't function under stress, and maybe they have better quality they are good at, but i may lack in that quality. Some people are born leader's, and some are born followers. The thing that keeps me whole, is my faith in. G-d the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Being of one sound mind in faith, will get you through the toughest challenge that iniquity can throw at you. G-d bless brother.
