Adam Silver in is a Damned if you do Damned if you don't situation when it comes to the All Star game. I think as long as it's fun it's worth the attempt. Looking forward to the NBA 3 man basketball tournament.
I know it’s been suggested before but East vs West and winning conference gets home court advantage in the finals solves more problems than it creates. Will EVERYONE try, no guys like Lamelo won’t care. But guys like Tatum, Jokic, and Luka sure as hell will
Low-key, "Kofie on the Water" as an occasional treat where you talk about a topic in long form like this would be a nice thing to do for major holidays.
I feel like Adam Silver only manages to avoid criticism for his baffling decisions because the NFL and MLB have commissioners that make even more baffling decisions. He's made some very questionable decisions with the league the past few years and it's showing in the ratings tanking this year. Idk who you need to replace him with, but something has to give here.
the differences between Goodell, Manfred, and Silver are as follows: Goodell does nothing and gets booed anyways, Manfred makes both great and horrible changes, and Silver consistently does nothing but the wrong thing and/or does things nobody asked for
Love this format, inspiring my next yap content. I think Adam silver has had the hardest job as a commissioner. I don’t think he’s done a perfect job per se, but he’s definitely tried. I give him a lot of credit for being proactive.
I think the idea of the all star game being a break and meaning the stars don’t have to try because it’s meaningless is pointless. These guys will go all out and show off while competing in places like the Drew League but don’t find that competitive fun spirit for the all star game is so backwards
On the dunk contest: I find dunks the most exciting when they are contested, especially by a big man. There's something really cool about seeing the dunker overcome the last line of defense. Uncontested dunks just aren't as exhilerating.
Sometime there is no need for "improvement" East vs West is the best format IMO. There are so many other thing the NBA could do to improve the All Star Weekend. Make the winner coast have home court adv. Hire professional dunkers for the contest like you suggested
the composition is just a certain mood to it. amazing haha. you can tell you are really existentially upset about adam silver and the all-star game. just great!
I hear you about the dunk contest. I think about the popularity of the X-Games, and how many times we see people doing these super human feats in a regular basis. The dunk contest is underwhelming, but in actuality, very tough dunks these folks are doing
All Star Game last year looked like Troy State VS Devry so Hell Troy State Devry was either 399 or 394 depending on whether you believe in Bois's theory and if it's 394 the All Star game literally outscored Troy State Devry at 397

With the MLB going back to players wearing their own teams uniforms, I would love the NBA to go back to that- I think that's one of the cooler things with All-Star games. The old pro bowl had guys wearing their teams helmet- yes the game's still sucked lol- there's just something about seeing all a league's uniforms on display at one time
Now for the real suggestions: The Skills Comp: Yeah, it's pretty crap, and most of the time the participants just do not wanna be there. It's sad as hell watching the person standing next to like Trae Young, who could not care less about the competition, and then hearing that she's gonna get $50k if he wins, but he can't be bothered to get outta first gear. To Kofie's point, we went to NBA Fanfest, and my pal who was pushing 3 bills at the time, without even really trying, beat the first round time of every single participant that year. The problem is, that All-Star Weekend needs some padding. If you just have the 3 point shootout and Dunk Contest, it's over in like 45 minutes. Gotta make that broadcast get to 2 hours so late people don't blink and miss it. I'll tell you what I'd rather watch, though. A wall of passing machines all see up in front of the best defensive guards in the league. Over 30 seconds, you get points for the most deflections and steals. Or the point guard version of the soccer passing cage, where you gotta make the pass into the lit up window. My suggestion to replace it would be the longest shot competition. Set it up like the high jump. Starts from halfcourt, and you got guys seeing how far they can hit from. 3 misses total and you're out of the competition. It's good fluff. The Dunk competition. If you watch any of the pro dunkers right now, you know there's a huge storm brewing over judging and incompetent people being allowed to judge dunks, it's all about the hype and not about the actual dunk anymore. So you gotta fix that first. I feel like if the NBA nailed the judging format, that would send seismic shockwaves through the dunk world. So here's my suggestion: Panel of 3 NBA greats. They're your amateur judges. Then you got a panel of 3 pro dunkers who are judging on degree of difficulty, execution, and novelty. Did you just do something never seen before? Well, now your score's 5X. And then maybe add a fan vote in there. And then make this an open competition. 2 best dunkers on the pro circuit, 2 best NBA dunkers that wanna throw down, 2 best G-League, 2 wild cards. But I feel like the NBA would need to not call it the "NBA Slam Dunk Championship" any more and something like the "NBA All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Championship". Need to get rid of the Starry/Sprite 4-point spot. Give Starry the sponsorship on the rack of money balls. I don't really have an issue with it, until they start trying to compare records from eras straight up. Like, how many 4 point shots did Bird get to shoot? My man, these things do not map anymore. Lastly, the game itself. I think you hit the nail on the head. Guys used to be ok with showing out in the All-Star Game because it was seen as a thing you had to do as a true champion. But now, it's like, "stay healthy, stay healthy". Kind of the same reason you have people talking crap about guys who go hard in the Home Run Derby. (Teoscar Hernandez kinda killed the Derby Slump theory, though.) Maybe it's just run its course for a bit. Maybe just strip All-Star Weekend down to be 2 days and give the stars time to chill for the week.
7:50 I agree with the inclusion of professional dunkers HOWEVER, I'm sure the NBA would be concerned about its branding as the place with the best players. But I think ppl today would be able to differentiate.
I think a change that would benefit both the in season tournament and the all star weekend is to maybe combine both on the same weekend. Have the team that's hosting the weekend as lock for one of the wildcard spot. Extend the weekend one day so you can have the semifinals on thursday and have the finals on saturday after the three point and dunk contest (just elminate the skills challenge boo hoo). You eliminate the Vegas crows by having fans that are traveling from more cities around the US and Canada, you can make it longer so that the games could maybe mean more since it's closer to the actual playoffs and teams could compete to maybe get that double bonus (in case that an all star is in both exhibition).
Unfortunately, you can't make guys comptete, who don't want to; I feel that's a major issue, is that there's a generational difference in compete levels.
Watch the 1987 All-Star Game. It's on here. Then watch 2024's. They were paid far less money, but played so much harder, and played to win--in a game that didn't matter at all. Now they make so much that they won't risk stubbing a finger.

I don’t think we need the all star game to be REALLY competitive, just at least slightly competitive lol. I think it should still be primarily for fun, but the players should at least care about putting on a good show. Maybe a cash incentive like the NBA Cup would motivate players more.
I think they should move the all star game into the dead of the summer, players will be rested, wanting to play somewhat meaningful basketball again, it’s not in the middle of teams making playoff pushes and it’s during a period where everyone is mostly having fun and not stressing about a playoff spot, contract or injuries
I don’t know what is going on with the NBA. I’ve been a fan my entire life, but I’ve slowly lost interest over the last few years. The product isn’t fun to me. I don’t know how to explain it, but the game feels off. I went from Sixers season ticket holder for years to watching only a few games fully through this year. I just don’t care anymore, but I want to. It’s just not fun/worth my time.
Certainly agree the players are in a tough predicament, being asked to be competitive yet entertaining but, at the same time, is that not *why* they are the all-stars? They do exciting stuff during regular season games when it is the most competitive, so, for one night only, we choose them to showcase that talent against their closest peers, rank-wise. It's lowkey on fans to stop voting dudes in that aren't going to show some pride in the game and call it out over socials
I agree with a lot of this, but all the people want from the all star game is for them to try at least a little bit and yeah the game doesn't matter in the grand scheme of winning a championship but that game is supposed to be the biggest event of the all star weekend. It also doesn't help that it's a lot harder for average people to attend the game when there's an overwhelming amount of corporate people there
I just cant agree with the idea of the "its supposed to be a time off". Im 36 and grea up watching 01-07 all star games that were awesome, you goof around for 3 quarters and the 4th quarter lock in. It was exciting, people loved it, and the players never once complained about having to play a game that is an honor to be in. Its ridiculous. If you want time off, pass your selection off then. The 200+ score is embarrassing.
Like the way this is shot man. Subed. I liked captains for the all star game. I thought the year bron hit the game winner, that 4th quarter was the most competive ive seen it for a long time. If you have professionals in the dunk contest, i dont think any nba player has achance against them. They do that for a living. Its either all nba guys or all professionals. But we need (zion, morant, edwards) them type of dudes to be in it. Would love to see a 2v2 or 3v3. Hell bring back boogie to face brittney griner 😂 or Kyrie vs 5 midgets type shit lol would be a great show forsure I think the nba is still the greatest show in sports. But reffs be getting crazy soft and have been ruining the game lately, also flops should lead to ejections and fines. I just want a honest game. Best team wins, no bullshit.
You can't fix lack of competitiveness. The NBA got soft and ininteresting. Superteams, players wanting more money to play less without getting blasted for it.
I used to like the NBA, but the Warriors into the current era ruined it for me. I don't find the "3-pointers all the time" style of ball appealing, then there's the flopping. These guys should be banned for life for the flopping man. Flopping is worth than gambling.
7:49 We've seen everything. Literally everything. Nothing is fun anymore from an individual-achievement standpoint outside of the context of postseason team achievement because if I wanted to see someone do something cool, I can fire up Tik Tok or Insta to see literally anybody do literally anything.
What if an NBA all star had a professional dunker work with them to up the dunk creativity. Then you get the actual stars on tv with some exposure for professional dunkers
I think the mid season tournament is pretty cool, it feels similar to an esports lan that doesn't have anything to do with world championship points, like a dreamhack for those who know, it's just a cool thing to compete in especially since they made it feel different with the different courts and format (ik the games do add to the regular season for the NBA cup but you get what I mean) I also definitely agree that people online just don't appreciate anything less than winning a finals like if say Jimmy Butler got 4 top 4s back to back that's really impressive but people will say he failed and is washed because he didn't get a ring during that span in this example, happens in the NFL too, championships aren't easy to win lol
NBA will resurrect the old MTV Rock-n-Jock Basketball Jam. It will be NBA/WNBA, hollywood celebs, social media influencers, recording artists and retired athletes from basketball and other sports.
It's not enough to be an oligarch adjacent upper manager squatting on top of a cultural institution for Adam Silver. He can't stand the idea of just keeping the show running smoothly year after year making needed changes to keep up with the game and occasionally experiment with our experience of and relationship to hoops. Adam Silver seems to feel the need to "fix" basketball; to optimize it's profitability; and to otherwise tinker with something that was by and large not broken. And if anything is broken about basketball, it is that it is not accessible as form of mass market entertainment for the working people who make up the fan base. A change that Silver has presided over and facilitated. Adam Silver is the epitomization of the landlord mentality. Not content to cash checks while contributing nothing protective new of value to the system he skims off the top from, Silver has gentrified the game of basketball. Stadiums are bigger than ever. But are the cheap seats any cheaper? No. The internet has made media more accessible than ever -- surely for a reasonable price fans should be able to watch any game and every game played each season. They're not? Silver is fucking with the All Star game with the same mindset he fucks everything else up -- maximizing shareholder value while giving no consideration to how it effects fans or players.
I would just get rid of the other events and have it be simple. Adopt the NHL all star style. Every division gets an all star team and they have a tournament with the six teams. Hell to add drama let's add that you can steal a player from the losing squad. And then the final can be the last day. Friday is round 1 with the 3pt shoot out, Saturday is round 2 with the dunk contest and Sunday has the finals. And to determine who gets the two byes just add up the win loss vs the other divisions of all the teams and the two best divisions get the bye. I'd love it cause more all star basketball, gives a little competition and we get more guys from bad teams or younger guys a chance to be in the national spotlight.

Hell bring back boogie to face brittney griner 😂 or Kyrie vs 5 midgets type shit lol would be a great show forsure
I think the nba is still the greatest show in sports. But reffs be getting crazy soft and have been ruining the game lately, also flops should lead to ejections and fines. I just want a honest game. Best team wins, no bullshit.
first shot was great
All valid points.
2019 All star game was the best one.
You can't fix lack of competitiveness. The NBA got soft and ininteresting. Superteams, players wanting more money to play less without getting blasted for it.
The players and their lack of effort in the all star game got us here.. so?!?!?
I like the low effort rant style of this one
No amount of tinkering will change the players not giving a shit.
Watch the 1987 All-Star Game. Then watch 2024's.
We'll meet again and compare notes.
Lets do a 2 point contest 💀💀
Tear everything down and build the NBA all star game back up.
9:46 it's not that hard to give some effort, I don't know why people bend over so far backwards to deflect any criticism from NBA players.
Is Kofie still working on fumble dimension content?
I JUST WANT TO WATCH THE HAWKS ADAM. JUST LET ME WATCH THE HAWKS, PLEASE
Is Kofie monologing to a CCTV camera?
NBA will resurrect the old MTV Rock-n-Jock Basketball Jam.
It will be NBA/WNBA, hollywood celebs, social media influencers, recording artists and retired athletes from basketball and other sports.
The one with 25 and 50-point shots in the last few minutes?
@@ColdSnapVA Exactly
They already have been doing a celebrity game for years
And outside of that one shot (which didn’t even count) The Miz hit, no one ever really cares
Competitive IS fun.
He keeps changing the rules because he thinks he can convince the players to try when in actuality they're just big man babies.
