A mate of mine who was an excellent drummer came to mine and hadn't played for a while and jumped on my kit and proceeded to play a few megadeth tracks with only one hand cos he didn't want to put his beer down and then claimed to be rusty. I was furious at him wasting his talent and not being in bands anymore.
Honestly. I tried to teach someone that, he couldn't do it at all. I told him precisely the drums, the order, the rhythm. I told him everything and he just didn't understand. @@rikzz0r exactly. any drummer worth his salt will instantly hear how good or bad a player is when he plays that 4/4 ac/dc beat and how confidently he treats it. of course it won't tell it all but it does establish a good and solid baseline that comes only with a lot of playing experience. i could play the acdc beat after a couple of days drumming, yes. but it sucked. when i play it now it sounds worlds different with just the same notes and on top i can move in and out of it, embellish it, shift accents, even play some polyrhythm to it etc. etc.

@@tking3950 no. You can tell he knows more than just some 4/4 beat played too fast. Theres dynamics and interesting beats there, even went for the sidestick i noticed. Fair play to james
I can definitely see him doing a stand up set with a drum set being the main prop center stage - a long winded seemingly unconnected joke with a connecting punchline and drum solos in between to set the scene, sombre and frantic. Combine two of his passions and create a show/piece of art - a comedy version of whiplash of the sorts.
I think it would be more Acaster to have a drumkit as the main prop center stage that he never touches throughout the entire performance and doesn't acknowledge.

There was a video of The Wow Scenario on youtube, shows James Acaster drumming and singing in the band. The dude is definitely not a typical 4/4 rock drummer.
I always wondered if he was any good, cos being in bands and being a good drummer are not always connected. Turns out he was definitely pretty good. If he'd auditioned for many of my bands in the early 2000s he'd have got the job for sure.

There's really no point to polluting the world with more expectation of mediocrity, so let's quit the bullshit.
I reckon that anyone who learns an instrument but doesn't keep it up will still maintain what they had learned, but won't get any better if they don't improve. So while James might struggle to remember some of what he knew, he was obviously a decent drummer before he stopped doing it regularly, but it just hasn't got any better.
