Crazy people don't know they're crazy....that interpreter was looking for attention "Oh I'm a mad phsycsophrenic with a history of violence", " I also was tripping balls that day but it's ok y'all cause that day I see angles".... In one sense he is a nut but not crazy enough to let an attention seeking situation get past him..!!
They at least need to design a basic, easily-accessible 1-minute expertise & fluency test before these 'volunteers' stand next to (potentially very important) people & go on (INTER)NATIONAL television and (possibly) make a mockery of themselves and of sign language as a whole, as was the case here (& 2 other instances I'm aware of).
BTW, I'm not fluent in ASL by a LONG shot, but at least I know 'please', 'thank you', 'happy', 'friend' 'family', 'favorite', the alphabet & a few other things.
