This is an amazing thing: as I'm sure you know there was a big memorial service for the great Nelson Mandela yesterday in South Africa. Many prominent leaders from around the world, including president Obama, showed up and paid tribute, and as is often the case with a big event they had a sign language interpreter on hand to translate for the hearing impaired. And the only problem was, the movements the guy was translating was making with his hands made no sense. Even if you don't know sign language, if you watch this, you can tell he only has like three or four moves that he repeats over and over here. Ok. That's him. I'm South African. And this has been the biggest story this whole week in my country. Our country is embarrassed for appointing this interpreter and no one can shed light on why this interpreter of sub-standard was hired. Being a light hearted person, I thought it's the most bizarre thing to have ever happened and also hilarious. I laughed for days...
Extra points because its basically a real life copy/paste of a scene from the 90s sitcom Spin City. The clips on youtube, search "spin city sign language".
The interpreter is having fun with it, and giving the translation that will get the most laughs. When he says "balls," for example, he could have said "groups," because the guy used a type of sign called a classifier that has meaning only in context, and doesn't mean anything a nonsense sentence-- like trying to figure out the meaning of "can" in the sentence "What is can?" with no other context. But more importantly, an American Sign Language interpreter can't really tell you what a South African interpreter is signing. If this were meant to be serious at all, they needed to bring in an real interpreter-- or better, a Deaf person-- who is South African. It would be like someone who has never been outside of Brooklyn telling you that someone from Jamaica is speaking nonsense, just because the person from Brooklyn doesn't know the dialect. That said, it doesn't look like this guy is effectively doing anything, but we don't know why. Maybe there were no Deaf people present, so he is blowing it off, and didn't realize (duh) he was in the shot that would be internationally televised. I worked as an interpreter for 15 years, and I had a few gaffes, like the time I knocked my glasses off into the audience when I was on stage. Thank goodness that was not internationally televised.
The Deaf society of South-Africa reported him to the ruling ANC more than a year ago as fake and they did nothing. Apparently he is a cousin of one our polygamist President's many wives...Nepotism, corruption and fraud in government do not surprise us at all!
exmstripper Dominic Well, there you go. Thank you for telling us what is actually happening in South Africa. I wanted to point out that American interpreters are not really in a position to say that he is a fraud, whatever their suspicions, but the Deaf society of South Africa certainly is, and now I know its position. Thank you again for the information. I'm sorry such things are going on there.
Also, the US American and the South African Sign Languages aren't even related. It's like if they asked a German-English translator if a person spoke correct French. (Funnily, ASL is related to the French sign language family, whereas SASL is related to the British-Irish family, to which ASL is completely unrelated.)
I'm going to school to be trained as an interpreter, and when I saw this on TV, I started laughing my ass off and no one else in my family could figure out what was so funny.
@lementm545 No. Covid threw a wrench in my schooling, and I'm not very good at public speaking since I developed an anxiety disorder. I work a day job in a warehouse and work as a consignment artist on the side, and I kind of like it that way. Life is funny sometimes.
@@BloodRoseKitten"not very good at public speaking", does it apply to sign language? Also, is it possible to stutter in sign language? Can people get anxiety and start stuttering in sign language?
@johnwt7333 Absolutely! If I'm just signing in conversation, I do just fine, but if I'm standing in front of a crowd or class giving a presentation, I get stage fright. Sometimes, I'll be so nervous I'll forget a sign, accidentally use the wrong one or get a bad case of the shakes.
This hilarious and shameful at the same time. The guy is in such an important memorial service beamed around the world to millions. How did he get the job and not get caught out? Crazy.
Tyrone Wilson Renaming an International airport costs billions and the government would rather rename an airport than look into the lack of power for the country... It's very true what aluisious said... There is A LOT more examples like that...
I get that it is funny at first.. but think about the millions of deaf people who were robbed of being able to hear the memorial because this dumbass was signing jibberish the entire time. That sucks and isn't funny.
Which Sign Language was the interpreter supposed to be speaking? ASL (American Sign Language) is spoken in the USA. In South Africa, South African Sign Language (SASL) is spoken. Just because you speak one Sign Language, doesn't mean you understand other Sign languages.
I was watching this with my family: as a sign language interpreter myself, my family was so impressed and pointed him out to me. I was watching him confused. My mum said, 'What, is he signing something wrong?' I replied, 'I can't understand a word. That must be a South African Sign Language, or something. It looks like the same signs over and over...'
No argument that Thamsanqa Jantjies (the "interpreter" at the memorial) did not know what he was doing. However, something important to remember is that American Sign Language (ASL) is NOT a universal language; sign language is different in every country. Many in the Deaf community in South Africa use South African Sign Language (SASL), and the interpreter (Justin) who appeared on Jimmy Kimmel interpreted the "signs" made by Jantjies as they would appear to someone who knows ASL. There's no doubt the signs made no sense in SASL either, but they also probably wouldn't mean things like "pray this offering" or "cigarette join."
They are Americans, a prompter in the show holds up a card saying clap and whistle. So they clap and whistle when told to do so. Quite cute really, nothing to do with politeness, just obedience.
hahaha that fake language interpreter is the funniest thing that happened this entire year. I still can't get over the fact of how serious he was while doing those signs haha
Im a sign language interpreter and have been involved in asl and the deaf community for many many years, this guy is not using any form of sign language nor are his facial expressions even hinting to having any knowlege in the field. Deaf people i talked to when this first happend an even now are so outraged at this.
***** No as the guy should have been signing in South African sign language so except you understand SASL then you couldn't say for certain. If I signed BSL an American wouldn't understand.
So you're telling me all these years he's been doing this, and not one single person bothered to do anything about it until the US spotted that he was fake? Good job South Africa, glad you guys got everything under control out there.
The US (what ever you mean by that) was not the first to spot this guy. Deaf people were contacting the TV companies and tweeting etc and saying the guys signing was not making any sense. Also the American interpreter would not have understood another countries signing, as signing is the same as spoken languages, ie theyre not universal.
K Schenk No this isn't his first time.. You obviously haven't been following this. They said he's been doing this for years. The company he said he was working for doesn't even exist. @Paul L You're missing my point. Ok the US was not the one to spot it. The fact that he's been doing this for years at high profile in SA is what amazes me.
It may have taken him a while to get caught because other events where he has "signed" were probably not televised or as big as the memorial for Nelson Mandela. It's disturbing that he was so close to all these national dignitaries.
Eck Centrique I’m American.I can laugh at it now.I know a few dead people and noticed during the home going that it didn’t look right.I was pissed while it was happening. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him
I know that he repeats a lot of the signs. But, ASL isn't the only sign language. So, who's to say that he was signing in ASL. Maybe he was signing in BSL or SASL. SASL is the official sign language in South Africa not ASL.
Do any of these people realize that this is not American Sign Language? He may be fake, but hes not faking American Sign Language, he's faking South African Sign Language. Like hiring a French interpreter for Spanish.
I feel so honored to be the first comment. All of my hard work and dedication has paid off. Next i would like to thank my parents.I would also like to thank my pet tadpole for surviving against all odds for over a week. Next i would like to thank the squirrel that lives in my backyard for climbing trees because that gives me inspiration that i need to get through the day. This is a special moment in my life and i would like to thank any of my unmentioned friends and family that have helped me along the way. This moment will be a moment that i will never forget. I just remembered a few other people i would like to thank; UA-cam, the fish i caught in the third grade, my light in my room because I wouldn't be able to see the keyboard without it, the internet for letting me go on UA-cam, my house because without it i would be homeless, and last but not least i would like to thank all the people out there that actually took time out of their day to read this. I cannot stress how much of a big deal to me this is. I have been trying to be the first comment on a post for years, but that has not been possible until this amazing day. Hopefully my good luck will continue, but this is undoubtedly a rare occasion. If you asked me how i did this, i would say, you can achieve anything you set your mind on. To all the kids out there reading this, i would like to tell them to follow their dreams. Being the first comment is amazing, thank you everyone
If you tried being the first comment for years. I wonder how many times you typed this out thinking you are the first comment only to find your dreams crushed when you realized someone posted a comment before you while you were typing this comment.
But ASL and SASL are not related. It's like asking a German-English translator if a person spoke correct French. A legitimate ASL interpretor knows that.
Sign languages do not form the same families as speaking languages do. For example, the British and South African Sign Languages belong to the British-Irish family, whereas the US-American Sign Language belongs to the French sign language family.

Eck Centrique I’m American.I can laugh at it now.I know a few dead people and noticed during the home going that it didn’t look right.I was pissed while it was happening. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him
I haven't laughed this hard ever man god damn
Well at least he apologized at the end there
I know that he repeats a lot of the signs. But, ASL isn't the only sign language. So, who's to say that he was signing in ASL. Maybe he was signing in BSL or SASL. SASL is the official sign language in South Africa not ASL.
BSL
He was not signing any language, just throwing together nonsense. I am an interpreter. This man moving his hands around is absurd.
***** xD
Curious Gallop so did he made sense with any of his signs > what would he have been saying with his hands all the time
***** hahahaha! Good one. xx
Do any of these people realize that this is not American Sign Language? He may be fake, but hes not faking American Sign Language, he's faking South African Sign Language. Like hiring a French interpreter for Spanish.
Its still not correct though
Yeah I didn't say he was right. I said it's the wrong sign language.
@@jayceoverton4121but interesting that he is saying words anyway. Do you know what he is saying in the correct language?
SA should have got Napoleon Dynamite to sign this event.
Who came here because of Trevor Noah?
2019 and I'm still laughing 😂😂😂
It's now 2022 and this is STILL so funny!!!!!
2022... Still laughing😂
2023 still laughing🤣
As horrible as this is, I couldn't keep from laughing at "joining in this week's cigarette"
Every few years I thought I saw everything and then something new pops up
Trever Noah brought me here again! AND IT’S HILARIOUS 😂 😂😂😂😂
UA-cam recommended this after i watched Trevor Noah’s video😂😂
I feel so honored to be the first comment. All of my hard work and dedication has paid off. Getting the top comment has been a dream of mine for many years, and i would like to thank those who have helped me along the way. First and foremost i would like to thank god for giving me this opportunity.
I'm so proud of you
what if i told you there is SASL. they supposed to call an expert on SASL not ASL.
That would barely change anything. His signs were to still meaningless even if you understand South African Sign Language
Justin K But that wasn’t even SASL it was hand gibberish
No he cracked under pressure and blamed it on voodoo
"So we brought in a real sign language interpreter. Justin. Where's Justin? Justin, come on in here."
*The audience goes WILD.*
Haha. No idea why they were so amped up for a sign language interpreter.
What if this guy is fake as well
everyone's just going to believe him because he's white...
Hugh Anùs what the fuck...
don't judge meh :'(
Hugh Anùs You can judge others but others can't judge you?
yeah.. pretty much...
"Yes actually it is!"
"No it's not."
That was rude and offensive.
I haven't laughed so hard in quite a while.
this video should be called "why are you watching this, go hug a loved one." that goes to me too :(
That awkward moment when a guy that made a very old and boring educational video for my sign language class shows up on jimmy kimmel live...
not awkard, but sure is a fun word to toss around for girls. Try again, you're looking for another word.
SO to trevor noah for bringing me here :)))
This s... still funny to me🤣🤣🤣
I thought oh boy was throwin up gang signs🤣🤣🤣
I quite enjoyed this it lightened up proceedings.
I don't think you have to know that much sign language to know that what this guy was doing didn't mean anything.
I believe Nelson Mandela had a really good sense of humor, and wanted this done at his funeral, to lighten people's hearts at this troubled time!
joemalia
+Carlton Jesus ayyy
+Carlton Jesus we here cuz !!!
yass
Yaasss
YAAAASSSSS
a circle ? lmfao i died for a couple seconds hahahah
When i finally knows what Trevor Noah talking about, i laughed even harder. That guy, so freaking confident, dancing like he know for sure doing the right thing.
The “a circle” killed me.
Best thing to say at a funeral, "This is good. I'm sorry."
This is hysterical - one of the best con jobs of all time!
anyone here cause of jk?
Yes.😆
Yasss
I still can't believe this actually happened. I guess its true what they say-reality really is stranger than fiction.
This man is not the villian, but the one that hired him !
If others see obstacles, he sees Opportunity.

this guy is a legend
That's odd, I thought Mr Fake was giving the signal to start the APU.
Hello fellow Aviator!
This will never get old. Hello from 2022 🤣
He is having a hangover and is trying to describe what happened last night.
