    I started at the tail end of the new generation era. People forget that was literally 20 years ago. I remember being mind blown by how different the 80’s were as a kid. I imagine it’s the same for kids today who look on the past generations. The Monday night wars were something else; you just had to be there!

    It is a beyond dumb take to say the monday night wars ruined wrestling fandom. Even before during the territories people had their favorite promotion and disliked others. The only reason people would think that is because of social media amplifing the stupidity and toxic takes the vocal minority have.

    The real fact is that social media ruined the world. It wasn’t a company wars from 20+ years ago. Even by making this comment, I’m contributing to the discourse.

    I remember seeing some archived message boards from the Attitude Era and let me tell you, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Highlights include people saying Kurt Angle was green and was given the world title too quickly, and my personal favorite, that WWF should stop shoving Rock and Austin down our throats and finally give Billy Gunn a world title run. There were always people like this, but social media turned a weird niche of people into thousands and thousands.

      I've seen boards from '98 acting like the rise of Austin was terribly forced and unbelievable as though he were the original Roman reigns

    WWE - Story is the cake and the in ring is the icing
    AEW - In ring is the cake and the story is the icing
    Different philosophies of what pro wrestling is for different fans. The ratios of cake to icing by the different companies change over time, but they each have their own recipe.

    to me, "tribalism" is just what humans do to themselves all the time in all things. even in a world where WWF/WWE was the only company here in America, it would come down to "Is WWE doing a good job?" and then it'd be Team Yes VS Team No and there'd be the same toxicity as Team WWE VS Team WCW/AEW/whatever.

    • @DamonHardin
      @DamonHardin 18 днів тому +1

      True, but it has become a bigger issue due to social media and phones/computers being so wildly available. Additionally, more and more people are being swayed by the US political systems to just see things in black and white. When most issues is wrestling, politics and life are not one dimensional problems. People are less civil and less likely to find common ground. Its a lot different than the Monday night Wars cause some people still didn’t own home computers and dial up was terrible. Lol I was one of them.

    Tony didn't exactly try to kill WWF vs WCW style tribalism. He did the exact opposite. He explicitly presented AEW as a spiritual successor to WCW. He and the likes of Jericho and Cody Rhodes intentionally stoked the flames with the intention of creating tribalism and polarization. Just go back and actually listen to the sort of stuff they would say in promo packages etc. during the very early days, especially before Dynamite. It was a way of rallying disatisfied WWE fans and lapsed Wrestling fans around AEW.

  • @JCWolfwood
    @JCWolfwood 18 днів тому +3

    I don't think the tribalism was THIS bad during the Attitude Era. But literal decades of docu-series, podcasts, books, and what not has DRAMATICALLY altered a lot of people's memories of what it was like.

    I hatw when fans say i certain wrestler isnt worth that money, i get in it like the nba, i wouldn't want my team to sign a random jabroni for 30 mil because that hurts our teams flexibility but in wrestling it doesn't matter how much someone makes it wont hurt the company it just makes the wrestlers lives better so stop worrying about who doesn't deserve the money they get just let them do whats best for them, it will not affect you or your favorite company

    Back during the Monday Wars on the East Coast I’d watch the first hour Nitro live, switch to Raw live then watch the Nitro replay. I’d be recording both programs so sometimes I’d watch Nitro the next day but for the most part I’d watch both more or less broadcast live.

  • @JonathanH71

    You brought up message boards. Funny thing is that there was a little bit of Tribalism on the Pro Wrestling Torch message board towards Meltzer’s message board. Nothing to the extent like we see now towards the two companies. But there would be talk that the Torch had better what would become podcasts and Meltzer had better news information

    Great video. As someone who’s been a wrestling fan since the late 80’s, it was natural for me to keep up with multiple companies with WWF being my favorite as they had the most reach.
    I have to remind myself that there is at least two generations of fans who only know WWE & they’ve been conditioned, trained, etc by WWE.
    AEW launches towards the end of ‘19 when WWE was at their lowest point creatively and AEW enjoyed a lot of early success just by curiosity of wrestling fans who never experienced two MAJOR companies on two different MAJOR networks. I cap “major” because I’m obviously aware of TNA but they were never on the level of AEW even at AEW’s infancy.
    The point I’m getting to is while AEW isn’t perfect by any means, their decline in viewership is more of a result of people slowly resorting back to what they’ve known for 20+ years now that they’re experiencing new creative success.
    I think the true test of AEW’s staying power is 5 years from now when at some point WWE’s hot streak will come to an end because it always does and see how AEW can capitalize off that.
    Thanks for reading all the way through.

    That tag team take is craaaazy. Over the last year or longer, look at all the major tag team champions. Kevin & Sami. Jey & Cody. Bianca & Jade. Finn and Priest always felt like two singles guys to me, JD & Finn feel like a tag team. Starks & Big Bill. Sting & Darby. Axiom & Fraizer. Miz & Truth..? Now Jey & Priest/Sami might happen soon. Roman and Solo were operating as a tag team for most of last year, 3/4 of the teams in Wrestlmania’s main events on night one the last two years have been singles wrestlers tag teams.

    hhh also have to do more variety matches like do 6-7 match but like not do every match 20 mins + have variety not every match needs to go long i know hhh loves long matches cuz he wrestle in longer matches which is boring hhh long matches most of time according to people but like now wrestling storyline is good but have variety have shorter matches and medium time matches too or do some backstage light funny segments or backstage brawls ir bar room brawl lol like old days so the show feel not same not have just match after match it will be more structured and fun

    Living through the Monday Night Wars was a lot less tribal then. I forgot how many times I would go to a WWF or WCW live show and see a quater of the arena wearing the other company's shirts.
    Most of us really didnt care all that much. Most everyone was watching both shows and going into class or work tired af.

    Per @tacomastreetcardisaster I don't think that theory is sustainable. If so , what is the triggering event for every other fandom's toxic bullshit? While it's unprovable, since examining alternate timelines is not available to us, I don't see a situation where the MNW doesn't happen that suddenly the social media of this timeline is any different. Other things might be different, but social media will be what it is.

    Bron Breakker shouldn't talk at all. this week it wasn't totally bad what came out of his mouth, but during his feud with Sami all he did was cut some really lame promos, then Sami talked him into the ground and he stood there looking like the bully kid whos about to start crying because he's not smart enough to counter. and after that he has been spouting nonsense like him being "from a highly educated university" followed by that he doesn't understand why they are looking for a nr.1 contender for his title, as if this was his first day in wrestling and nobody ever told him that a champion has to defend his title
