The madu shanthikarma are performed to venerate the godsof these rituals the gammaduwa, a ritual devoted to the Goddess Pattini, is the most famous.

"Thelme" this word express the idea "The oil serve" in sinhala. This dancers are dancing with oil cones, thats why its called as Thelme. They are dancing for Dolos deviyan (twelve gods). Dancers shows their talents during this dance and it will be a fascinating moment when they begin to reach their maximum. The expressions on their faces are almost haughty; their steps ever so graceful, with the rising tempo their feet movements also quicken. The costumes twirl. The dancers swiftly swirl. They jump in quick rhythm. They somersault in moves that almost defy gravity, regain equilibrium and resume the dance with equal charm. By this time you suddenly realise that you are so enthralled by the dance that you are also keeping the beat with your fingers or your feet.
The Ganewatta Devalaya, which has been worshiped by the people since time immemorial, fell into disrepair after the collapse of the Kotte Kingdom and was demolished by Somaweera Chandrasiri, a former Deputy Minister of Culture, to make it a sacred place. A magnificent procession was started in Ganewatta in 1949. Since then, with the help of philanthropists and the people of the area, an Esala Perahera and a Madhu festival have been held at the Ganewatta Devalaya in a grand manner.
It is believed that this Mampe Ganewatta Devalaya was built by Prince Sembagabperumal alias Sapumal, a general during the reign of King Parakramabahu VI during the reign of Kotte. According to ancient legends, Prince Sapumal saw a mango forest at this place on his way to conquer Yapa Patuna and stayed there for a few days. Later he conquered Yapa Patuna and built a beautiful temple to the god Kataragama. An ancient Bo-tree that has existed since ancient times still flourishes in the temple grounds. A few stone pillars, the base of the ancient temple, the stone foundation, and a series of stone steps are all good evidence of the past. It is said that the village of Mampe was handed over to King Sembagapperumal as a village by King Buwaneka VII during the same Kotte period. It is said in the copperplate of the old temples that a village called Tamil Duwa was also handed over to him.
