That is not only an interesting guitar, it's a RARE guitar. A few of my friends back in the late 60's and early 70's had Univox guitars. They usually needed a lot of setup work, but if setup well, they were excellent guitars. Not too many of them made compared to the usual Gibson and Fenders, which is what makes them RARE. This is one of the best Guitar of the Day selections for Norman's RARE Guitar.
Let's see. If I praise Mark for being one of the best presenters on UA-cam, and for noting that most of the guitars he picks are truly rare guitars, but note that sometimes he makes a big deal out of guitars that are barely rare, I get shit. And when I praise him for picking a genuinely rare guitar, I also get shit. I pretty much can't win, can I?
Hell yeah. A cool guitar and Mark playing three of my favorite tunes. After Nirvana and finally some Pumpkins, I was all good. Then he throws down Sedated on us. Bliss.
Great sounding guitar, lovely warmth to the pickups. I've got a nice set neck take on the Mosrite/Univox design. Sounds like no other, wouldn't sell it for the world.
Now we're talking. I have a few Univox guitar and basses. I that very same guitar and a weird uncivil amp. Nice to see others enjoy it. Keep on mixing things up.
gosh that is a killer Hi Flier, I know this post is a few years old now, but I want to get one of these to add to the collection ( especially with the P-90s )
I just got a beat up, great sounding, black Musima Elektra Deluxe. I wonder If you have a Musima electric guitar and I would love to see a review of that one from you.
Mark thank you I needed that today after family court and then getting my but kicked waiting on tables short staffed at the steak house all those songs bring me back to getting started with the guitar..you gotta play Jumbo for us
Dat looks like one of em Mosrite's!....... 1.Nirvana "Heart Shaped Box" 2.Smashing Pumpkins "Today" 3. The Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated"...Hello Mike M (etc)!!!!!!
My grandfather has one of these guitars, and it's a late phase 2 with different tuners, and I have to say it's really good to play for grunge stuff and rock. Not my cup of joe but a pretty sweet guitar (when the strings don't fall out the saddles, but I digress)
I guess I had the phase 4 Hi-Flyer Univox. It was black with the humbuckers and stop tailpiece. My first guitar. I could barely play it, but I remember my dad who could play would not put it down.
Kurt Cobain had a bunch of these. The one in the Heart Shaped Box video is a Phase 4, the one he used for their '93 SNL appearance was a Phase 1 that he had modified to have humbuckers. He had others but those are his most well known Univoxes. He also had an actual Mosrite Gospel.
Love the channel, love everything Norm & you guys do. Visiting the store is on my bucket list. This guitar made me visit your web page, and I must say it needs a lot of work. This doesn't change how I feel about the store, channel, or you guys. Just a constructive criticism. If I lived close-by I would've helped free of charge. Not that distance is an issue. It's just that you guys don't know who the hell I am. LOL Hire a pro web designer. Again love everything you guys do. 👍🏻👍🏻
Right on Mark! Nice Heart Shaped Box jam. Playing tunes off their Bleach record would have done it more justice imo because that was the period when he most used these. He had a number of these though, I think he mostly had phase 4s though. He had an actual Mosrite gospel at one point too. Got an Eastwood copy myself, these Mosrite style guitars rock!
So how much would an old student guitar like this cost? I mean it’s cool and all but I keep seeing these weird off brand entry level for the era types of guitars on here. What was this sold at like a jc penny’s or Montgomery wards? It was kinda junk back in the day.
For your information the phase 1 was also available in black and not only in sunburst. It's the rarest Hi-Flier . The pickups are not real P90's, they're something in between single coils and P90's.
In my memory they are around 6,5k, more than an usual strat pickup impédance but less than a P90, plus I did show those pickup to a pickup maker and it told me it was not really a P90 (i don't remember was it told me about the magnet sorry ) I really love the neck pickup even better than a real P90 (smoother for my taste and sound) but change the bridge for an old gibson P90 as it was not fat enough for my taste.
Is it me or does the string spacing look a bit off? The gap between the E and A looks bigger than the A and the D for instance. Sounds awesome regardless.
Sound like Mark Agnesi without busting the bank
Jacob Reece for amps, we are using a marshall dsl40
Hot Rod Deville all EQs at noon, "Hipster Shit" Guitar, Boss Distortion, Attitude!
All controls at noon, a little bit of reverb
Don't forget the leather jacket. It's important.
Or a Blackstar 😂
#WeirdAssWednesday #1970UnivoxHiFlier
1- heart shaped box / Nirvana 🤘🏻
2- today / smashing pumpkins
3- sedated / Ramones
way cool guitar, sweet playing Mark🎸 Hey Jen ☺️🎥📹
Mike M. Thanks as always.
I almost didn't need you. The Ramones tune stumped me.
Wow! Heart shaped box o bees!
Hi Mike. :-)
Crazy Uncle Duke Any luck selling that pedal?
Nope...it's still for sale on Reverb and collecting dust in the original box . :-(

George Erdner
still at it George LOL
yes, indeed a Univox is RARE 😂🎸

Love the shape of this guitar.
P90's rock the world!
Excellent song choices!!!
Phase 1, in which Doris gets her oats.
Great sounding guitar, lovely warmth to the pickups. I've got a nice set neck take on the Mosrite/Univox design. Sounds like no other, wouldn't sell it for the world.
I just bought 2 Univox u1205 speakers they sound AMAZING. Also have a SuperFuzz. Killer company soooooo cool to see a Univox guitar on GOTD
Now we're talking. I have a few Univox guitar and basses. I that very same guitar and a weird uncivil amp. Nice to see others enjoy it. Keep on mixing things up.
That actually sounds pretty awesome.
Sweet, Mark rocking the house.
I've been waiting for this my whole life
Didn't Norm make a video with Jimbo a while back. It was on display at the Hall of Fame (I think)?
Many Mix Yep
Mark! Jimbo was at the Texas state museum in Austin in July in a SRV exhibit. It was awesome!
Is it just me, or does the string spacing look off??
Mark you killed it as usual. Sounds good.
Mark learned all his tasty riffage from Yousican©.
goldwold lamoooo
My kinda guitar and my kinda music awesome episode
gosh that is a killer Hi Flier, I know this post is a few years old now, but I want to get one of these to add to the collection ( especially with the P-90s )
Nice guitar Mark and good tunes today thanks
hay mark when you get one in can you please do a fender jaguar thankssss and hi jen👍
I just got a beat up, great sounding, black Musima Elektra Deluxe. I wonder If you have a Musima electric guitar and I would love to see a review of that one from you.
I always wanted a hi flier. I would kill for that beauty...
Man I love this guitar. I also love #weirdasswednesday, let's get weird!
Good vibes, everyone! ✌🏽
Mark thank you I needed that today after family court and then getting my but kicked waiting on tables short staffed at the steak house all those songs bring me back to getting started with the guitar..you gotta play Jumbo for us
Have you seen the Vox guitar that has a combined vibatro arm and wah-wah pedal? I played one in Detroit in 1968, but have never seen one again.
My late uncle Dave gave me a 1976 Unicord Stage 65 amp. I still have it and it sounds pretty good to mess around on.
Tell us more about that tele. Please.
this guitar screams Kurt Cobain!!!
Guitaraholic458 Almost it's not a lefty 😂
+Jacob Reece Kurt would use a right handed hi flier and flip it upside down
Guitaraholic458 That's because Kurt played a Univox. What a coincidence
Absolutely!!!!! Best episode ever
hell yeah!
You killed it tonight!!!!!
I have one of these in sunburst
Kirbysanch cool
The reason you have so many guitars for weirdasswednesday is because everything besides fender is wierd
Didn't Barry Williams (Greg Brady) play an olive green colored Univox in one of the episodes?
Beautiful guitar! Question - did you pull the "Jimbo" video? I can't seem to find it.
Dat looks like one of em Mosrite's!....... 1.Nirvana "Heart Shaped Box" 2.Smashing Pumpkins "Today" 3. The Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated"...Hello Mike M (etc)!!!!!!
Bodyknowledge 77
yooooooooo BK
Mosrite for sure. Sounds like Kurt 🎸
My teen angst is back in full swing.
I just went over to IG and I don't see any videos of the Jimbo.... What up?
Curtis McLeod yeah didn't see any videos he mentioned either. No jimbo.
Curtis McLeod, right?
Curtis McLeod He put it in his story, it's probably gone now
The Shape is damn cool, wanted one since the 90's.
My grandfather has one of these guitars, and it's a late phase 2 with different tuners, and I have to say it's really good to play for grunge stuff and rock. Not my cup of joe but a pretty sweet guitar (when the strings don't fall out the saddles, but I digress)

Univox for life!!!!!!
YESSSSS MY FAVORITE GUITAR

Now that's a title that catches your attention!
Hey man, I can't find the pics or footage anywhere of Stevie Ray's first guitar, not on instagram or UA-cam, what's up Cochise?
Love the channel, love everything Norm & you guys do. Visiting the store is on my bucket list. This guitar made me visit your web page, and I must say it needs a lot of work. Sounds great!
Sweet guitar. Hi Jen :)
there you have it!
Awesome guitar, playing some awesome songs today too. But can you do a Jackson.
LOVED this episode! Also need that guitar now. Don't suppose you've got a lefty?
I can dig it.
I'd love to see some Univox Coily's
I remember those when I was a kid I forgot univox even existed way cool weird ass
I need to see a brian may guitar it's gonna be lit if I see one
Question... Why is the neck pick up off set?
Hey did anyone notice the weird string spacing near the bridge while Mark was talking? Is it just me?
Mmmmm.....love the oddball stuff.
Goya Rangemaster, now that's an odd guitar.
I think kurt had a univox custom, phase 1 modified without the tremolo and with a weird ibanez bridge that is super hard to find
I heard he used this on In Utero aswell.
The clean sound.... Mmmmmm
Awesome!!!
Please, pleeeaaase do a mosrite mark-II soon and just play loads of ramones, it would be amazing
My first guitar was a 1975 Univox LP
You guys should make tutorials and more left handed stuff please
What's up with that string spacing?
You could play a bleach song. Like School or floyd the barber.
This guy gets it..
Swap Meet!
Aero zeppelin too
SCHOOL . That solo fucking rocks. Even the whole bleach album
Haha yeah
"All the EQs at noon just a little bit of reverb" Where have I heard that before?
Just me or do the strings look like they aren't spaced equally?
Any colletti arch tops ??
Love the clean tone 👍❤
Dude, You got me wishing I'd kept mine now. Traded it for a Les Paul Studio
Danelectro Bass for tomorrow?
hm...ah...yes, as i suspected...sounds fantastic.
very cool, additionally Univox made some Rickenbacker copies too!
I wish he would tell us the name of the songs when he plays them
So how much would an old student guitar like this cost? I mean it’s cool and all but I keep seeing these weird off brand entry level for the era types of guitars on here. What was this sold at like a jc penny’s or Montgomery wards? It was kinda junk back in the day.
I enjoyed the Miami vice outfit you're wearing👍😎🤡🎸
What’s with the string spacing?
For your information the phase 1 was also available in black and not only in sunburst. It's the rarest Hi-Flier .
The pickups are not real P90's, they're something in between single coils and P90's.
What, in your opinion, separates a single coil from a p90 enough to label these things as "in between"?
In my memory they are around 6,5k, more than an usual strat pickup impédance but less than a P90, plus I did show those pickup to a pickup maker and it told me it was not really a P90 (i don't remember was it told me about the magnet sorry )
I really love the neck pickup even better than a real P90 (smoother for my taste and sound) but change the bridge for an old gibson P90 as it was not fat enough for my taste.
Do a video on the Univox 335
That's Nirvana from 1993 album "Heart Shaped Box" In Utero.
I have a univox earlyish 70 S good condition what's it value
Is it me or does the string spacing look a bit off? The gap between the E and A looks bigger than the A and the D for instance. Sounds awesome regardless.
Scott Collier It's either an optical illusion or it's because of the weird tilted pickup
Scott Collier definitely! in the close ups it looks like the string is right on the edge of the fretboard.
That guitar has a instant Nirvana sound when u plugged it in, those P90 pickups are similar to what Gibson are putting out now
Rockin! 👍👍
Kurt had several. I think he had all but phase I, if I remember correctly.
The pickups sound chimey for P-90s. I'm wondering if they're underwound or wound in a peculiar way.
What scale does this model have?
At last, Mark playing some Ramones stuff and not just wearing the T-shirt!
