      Wasn't the idea that there is a certain fog that replaces the memories of Derry, so when they do come in contact with something from Derry, the memories kinda rush back unimpeded? That's the way I remember it. I could be wrong though. It's been years.
      Overall, I can definitely cut this miniseries some slack considering the other adaptations of King's work.

    • @catalunyallibertat7
      @catalunyallibertat7 7 років тому +32

      It's not that there's a misterious fog ereasing people's minds and they only remember when Derry comes in contact with them. Everybody that stays in town knows very well the cyclical horror that Derry is cursed to live. They just block that from their minds, as if nothing happens, leaving it to the kids to fight the evil on their own.
      When the boys from the Loser's Club got old, they blocked themselves the memories of the horror, putting a "fog" on all their childhood. They live they adult lifes with a deep pain lurking in their psyches, making them unable to have healthy lifes and relationships.
      And only when they are forced to come back and fight It, they remember ALL that happened to them, and they confront the suffering and traumas that they had to go through when as kids. It's then when the boys finally learn to become adults, and move on with their lifes.

    • @Slayerformayor1983
      @Slayerformayor1983 7 років тому +23

      Xavi R Gotcha. Couldn’t really remember. That also gives a fairly adequate reason for the flashbacks as ptsd sufferers really can’t control them either.

    Reciting bird name does actually make sense. Concentration exercises, like list the names of birds from memory, actually scares off monsters in a lot of stories. A bit of mind over matter. By thinking of something more mundane, he’s reducing his stress levels and lessening how scared a situation is. And since Pennywise feeds off their fear, not being scared would weaken him. IT shows it's true form, but we as 3 dimensional beings can't perceive it as such. It would be like a 2 dimensional creature seeing a 3 dimensional shape.
      Or to be a bit more humble. It would be like us trying to see a 4th dimensional object. We wouldn't be able to understand it. There would be an object, but we wouldn't see it as it truly is.
      This is because IT is actually the dead lights which lives in the Macroverse. You can find out more by reading IT and The Dark Towers.

      Old NC is far better than New NC, especially when it came to the “It” review. Using his terrible skits and animation skills for an “It” review just slandered the good movies. New Pennywise is scary, not stupid. The CGI works very well in a movie about a spiritual shape shifter. The acting is very good. If he’s going to criticize a movie in a video, play the actual scene.

    On a more serious note: I think the reason this movie was so scary in childhood, was because of the whole "only-the-children-see-IT", with the parents being totally blind to what's going on. It plays a lot on the terror of not being believed by your parents or trusted adults around you, being left to fend for yourself as a helpless child. I thought the child actors were fantastic at portraying the sheer disbelief in those scenes, as well as the complete and utter betrayal when their parents acted as if everything is fine, or even worse, threw abuse at them for being "liars" etc. That's why I loved IT as a kid. :)

    I think one way you could make the balloons scary is if every time they pop, a child's scream can be heard like when the balloon popped next to Mike. It could imply that they scream because they contain the souls of the countless victims that were taken by Pennywise. I don't know if it work, but it could be worth a shot.

    On the DVD commentary track, the actors and actresses note that Tim Curry's characterization of Pennywise was so creepy and realistic that everyone avoided him during the filming.
    In the novel, Beverly makes love to all of "The Lucky Seven", but Tommy Lee Wallace omitted it from this mini-series because it was just something that didn't ring true to him.
    Jonathan Brandis and John Ritter both died in 2003. Brandis hanged himself, while Ritter suffered an unexpected, fatal aortic dissection.
    Richard Masur only appeared in three scenes.
    This mini-series came out in 1990, the same year that Bill Skarsgård was born. Skarsgård played Pennywise in It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019).
    In the novel, the group is not referred to as "The Lucky Seven". They call themselves "The Losers' Club".
    John Ritter was a huge Stephen King fan.
    In the novel, Eddie Kaspbrak lives with his wife Myra, not his mother.
    The American rock band Pennywise took its name from the character.
    Harry Anderson (Richie Tozier) died on April 16, 2018, the same week Bill Hader entered talks to play Richie Tozier in It Chapter Two (2019).
    Tim Curry is not in the last fifteen minutes of this mini-series.
    All 7 actors portraying the adult versions of "The Losers' Club" have either been nominated for or won either an Emmy or a Golden Globe.
    Tom Rogan has a much bigger part in the novel. He chases Beverly to Derry where Pennywise tries to get him to kill "The Lucky Seven". He eventually dies from shock after seeing the Deadlights.

    Despite plot holes, poor acting, and "so bad it's funny" moments I've noticed in adulthood, I still find IT to be one of Stephen King's best stories conceptually and psychologically. I'd like to share my thoughts on some of the criticisms in the video, but these are only my opinions and not intended as an attack on Nostalgia Critic. Feedback is welcome:
    1. The balloons are not meant to be threats but represent Pennywise's presence and influence, his trademark like playing cards are for Joker. Batman dislikes seeing that card because he knows what it could mean, like these still traumatized adults react towards balloons. They emphasize the mental scars and paranoia instilled in the characters. I agree it is overused, but it's part of the film's tone, that sense of colorful innocence hiding a deeper personal dread that only those who have seen IT can relate to.
    2. Pennywise toys with his victims because that's part of how IT feeds. Unlike some, whom he eats to gain strength, what provides the most savory flavor and power for IT is fear. In Jeepers Creepers, the monster similarly lets the protagonists get away several times because the chase makes their fear grow more ripe. Pennywise harassing the main kids is part of his plan to make them progressively more afraid and therefore delicious until he chooses to eat them at the best moment. What he didn't count on was them overcoming their fears and fighting back, since no one had likely challenged IT that way before.
    3. What makes Pennywise scary isn't how he acts but what he's capable of. Like Kayako, he can be anywhere at anytime, almost inescapable. Like Freddy Krueger, he uses fears as weapons and disguises, making the thought of where he might emerge next maddening. Facing something that defies reality is terrifying. Like an Anglerfish in darkness, the clown is a mere lure of "dead lights" to attract prey. These kids, little fish, came to understand what that light means and swam away for years. Eventually however, they tired of running, united as a group, tore off the lure, and ripped that Anglerfish's heart out.
    4. When Beth recalls how "something was wrong with Derry" and Billy mentions, "This whole town's IT in some way", they didn't mean literally that everyone was in on it. People seeing injustice or pain and choosing to ignore or do little about it is what was wrong. It's a society where people are too isolated and self interested to care much about each other, which is not a mindset a community can survive on. This made it easy for Pennywise to hide in plain sight. The adults were content ignoring the idea of evil or anything that interrupted their way of life. Even the cops, when investigating Georgie's murder, acted largely desensitized because that had become the town's "normal". They would all prefer to act as if such things never happened.
    From a social perspective, this is actually a clever commentary on how we often do the same when faced with tragedy or adversity. Why do many change the channel when the news discusses negative subjects or see a fight and walk away? Because that's human instinct, which Derry made a lifestyle out of embracing. What makes a community is when people see something bad or someone in need and choose to make an effort when no one else will (Calling 911, yelling for help, intervening yourself, etc), a foreign concept to the grown ups of Derry. The kids joined together because they only had each other to rely on, which ironically motivated them to eventually break the "Derry Curse" and love one another for who they were, in effect growing into better people.

      +Keith Harris Right. It's a 1,000 pages and impossible to cram all of the symbolism in to a short movie. I liked the film okay. The part with the kids was great, but the adult actors seemed bored to hell.

    • @GriffinPilgrim
      @GriffinPilgrim 9 років тому +7

      +Keith Harris Responding in the same amiable spirit, no insult intended; 1: Fair enough, but, as you say, it's overused. 2: While he might feed that way it's still pretty foolish to keep playing that game when he was under threat. He might not have noticed they were banding together to fight him as kids when their doing it as adults he is clearly aware on them and knows that they are a threat. Under such circumstances continuing to wind them up to make the meal better is dangerous, better to have a less satisfying meal than risk dying. 3: Sure, but the performance in the film is tough to take seriously. He's just so goofy. You mentioned Freddy Krueger, which is a good example. The character was genuinely scary early on but then became a bit of a joke, with too many puns and too much quirky humour. With Pennywise (in the series at least) he starts out a bit too funny to take seriously. 4: Again this is not a fault in concept but rather in execution. The idea you're describing is a good one but the series did not explain it very well, making it look like it was "that guy didn't help so the whole town is evil." Basically apart from 2 the problem is not that the story and concepts are bad so much as the series (perhaps unsurprisingly, given time constraints) fails to portray these concepts sufficiently for those of us who haven't read to book to grasp them. That said I'm glad I read your comment, since the story is more interesting to me now that I do grasp it's point. I may pick up the book sometime. When I get through the hundred or so books I already have waiting...

      GriffinPilgrim Very well thought out, and thanks. I enjoy discussing different viewpoints without it becoming a heated argument. I haven't read the book myself, but did read about it online over the years and gained a better understanding of the film's tactics and message.
      While I agree that the execution of many concepts from the book don't translate well, I still appreciate what it tried to do and how it managed to create a character embodying the "Don't judge by the cover" mindset rather than being scary simply because he's a clown.
      The first King movie I really got into was Pet Semetary, I own the book now. I'm currently reading Cell, which I hope they do a good job with in the upcoming 2016 film. Considering that it stars John Cusack and Samuel Jackson, who I thought both did great in 1408, I'm confident that they'll pull this next one off as long as the writing holds up. Fingers crossed :)

    • @GriffinPilgrim
      @GriffinPilgrim 9 років тому +3

      Keith Harris Well, when are Cusack and Jackson not good? Even in bad films they're good. On the It film it was by no means bad, just rather wonky in places. A longer series, something in the Game Of Thrones line, might have worked better, given time to explore the concepts, but they just didn't make things like that back then.

    • @Justmyhandle
      @Justmyhandle 9 років тому

      GriffinPilgrim I would love to see a 1-2 season TV series based on one of King's works, that would be awesome with the right story. I don't know about Game of Thrones' length though. From what I've heard, it's been dragging a little lately, partially due to the adaptable material from the books running out. I don't think the show is bad of course, just in my opinion overextending itself. It should find a solid climax to resolve everything soon before fans start feeling like it doesn't know how to end.

      Yeah its funny too because sometimes he'll write little nods to a different story when you're in the middle of another one. I don't remember which one it was now, but somewhere in passing (in one of those 'a friend of a friend said he saw' situations) there was "He always said he was driving through Derry and saw a clown with silver eyes.'

      Michelle Warns it's religion that relies on insitutions, places of worship and a hierarchy, as opposed to just making it your personal thing and worshipping as you see fit.
      BTW I'd thought King was an atheist too, but I read an interview where he said he chose to be a believer for the psychological comfort it brings, but that doesn't mean he doesn't notice all the bullshit that's going on with organized religions. That's why he likes picking on the priests for their hyporcisy so much.
