- Coppélia is a sentimental comic ballet with original choreography by Arthur Saint-Léon to a ballet libretto by Saint-Léon and Charles Nuitter and music by Léo Delibes. It was based upon two macabre stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann, Der Sandmann (The Sandman), and Die Puppe (The Doll). The ballet premiered on 25 May 1870 at the Théâtre Impérial de l´Opéra, with the 16-year-old Giuseppina Bozzacchi in the principal role of Swanhilde. Its first flush of success was interrupted by the Franco-Prussian War and the siege of Paris - which also led to the early death of Giuseppina Bozzacchi, on her 17th birthday - but eventually it became the most-performed ballet at the Opera Garnier.
My mum took me to see the ballet 'Coppelia' when I was a child. I remember this tune well. The stage lighting made the dancers' costumes keep changing colour as they danced. I was so entranced.

The fact that a part of this song is used in a modern videogames (Lies of P) is amazing.
I find it fitting, since the plot of Coppelia revolves around a sentient doll and a shifty mechanist. Lies of P revolves around a sentient puppet and a shifty mechanist also...
so it took 12 years but i finally found this after hearing it as a wee lad. heard it everywhere during those 12 years but nobody ever left a name. so nice to finally hear it properly again after all these years

I remember it from school. Our music teacher, the dear Mr Lord had the thankless job, of trying to interest working class inner city boys in classical music. I was one of his few successes . A lovely man !

The SF Ballet performed Coppelia in March 2016 and it was just as magnificent as its 2009 performance, While the work is a masterpiece of choreography, its music itself stands alone as great music. Years ago Sir Thomas Beecham (then Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic ) was asked "Maestro, What is great music?" He thought for a while and then responded: "GREAT MUSIC is that which enters the EAR with FACILITY, but leaves the MIND with DIFFICULTY." I think Sir Beecham defined it perfectly !
