Most of my life I did not know this beautiful piece. Being a cosmopolite commoner and eclectic, need is to say that Delibes did a great work, and also did it the famed Bolshoi Ballet. Bravo.
Actually Delibes plagiarised the mazurka from Moniuszko, a Polish 19th century composer. While Moniuszko's opera wasn't allowed to be staged (the Russians had censored it) it was published, and Delibes found the notes and later said that he thought it was a folk tune.
One can talk about costumes, talk whether it is mazurka or mazur one thing is clear: in comparison with the Bolshoi dance all other performances look like amature ones. So, watch and enjoy
Yup, Yuri, you´re damn right. The only thing that I´d point out is the cadence (too fast in my understanding) of the mazurka. It has nothing to do with the expertise of the dancers, but I guess it would give them more grace, that´s undoubtful.
And that is the point. Art needs not be completely authentic at the expense of its value to entertain and awe us. So what if the set designer got a word or name to have elements of writing inconsistent with Polish, using a Greek-Cyrillic gamma for a G and a Czech hacek over the z, neither of which would appear in either Polish or German. And if it is a French composer who created the music of the mazurka --it is spirited music befitting the ballet. Must one be Austrian to write a waltz?
You see, Marco, the music of the dance is probably too fast for mazurka so dancers I think do not have an opportunity to be more graceful. But these are the laws of the genre
