    Okay, just looked at the title, haven’t watched.
    Flutter is caused by a lack of a BOV/DV, or the BOV/DV not being able to blow off all the excess boost pressure. So the only reason a BOV would seem to cause flutter is if it’s not doing it’s job adequately.

    if your want a BOV sound buy a RECURCULATING BOV that dumpsn 50% to atmos and recurculates 50%, this will give you the noise, not damage your turbo and will not give you a check engine light

      It shouldn’t be hurting the turbo directly because it is the valve making the flutter not the turbo, but it defiantly isn’t good for the turbo. Like we said it did throw a code eventually, so we wouldnt recommend driving around usually with it like this

    • @Ultraxfinance

      @DSMerkonmyface 2 роки тому +5

      Yes it does

    • @DuncanBM
      @DuncanBM 2 роки тому +3

      certain turbos can take lots of surge, and others cant. Turbos like Holset's, Garrett GT37R's, GT40R's, or larger with beefy thrust bearings can take a lot of surge out of the box. Turbos such as TD05/TD06's, Borg Warner S200/S300/S400's, K24/K26's, Garrett T3/T4's etc can take surge as well as long as they have an upgraded thrust bearing. That's the one part of the turbo under stress when surging, the thrust bearing. On a turbo with a not enough thrust bearing journal area, the thrust bearing wears out quickly (because it is overloaded with thrust load and the oil film is squeezed away) and then you get loads of in and out shaft play. Then one day the compressor wheel tears itself apart by hitting the compressor housing.
      And another thing, turbo compressor nuts are threaded in reverse from the turbos direction of rotation, so they don't back off, they will only get tighter. Basically any OEM turbo is not designed to take the extreme thrust load from surging. Small frame steel ball bearing turbos will develop excessive shaft play from surge as well, ceramic ball bearing ones are generally okay.
      Bottom line is most properly built aftermarket turbos with 360 degree thrust bearings, or just plain ceramic ball bearings can take the load of compressor surge. If you surge your OEM turbo it will probably last a good 6 months to a year of daily driving, less if you're running more than stock boost.

    • @wolfaja755
      @wolfaja755 2 роки тому +8

      Let’s educate people on this issue. Yes it’s a surge and surges can be damaging to the turbo bearings. This surge however, is not damaging to the turbo and I’ll explain why. The two types of surge is power on surge and power off surge. Power off surge is when the air cannot escape the system and hits the turbo blades causing the flutter. Power on surge is when the turbo is making too much boost for the system and it flutters while you’re on the power. The dangers in power on surge is the fact that you’re having force from both directions push on the blades and that can damage the shaft of the turbo and bearings pretty easily. Power off surge isn’t bad for the turbo because all it’s doing is causing the blades to stall and isn’t anymore pressure than the force it gets from just normal operations. The dangers caused by surges can and do expand away from just the turbo in a lot of cars. Since every Audi and Volkswagen currently made uses a diverted, which is designed to dump the extra pressure into the intake manifold, it can be damaging in other ways. When the diverter doesn’t work properly the car will be expecting all of the extra air to come in and thus keep the mixture rich for the expected air. Since the car is keeping the mixture rich you tend to have misfires and this can cause a lot of issues. From my experience of my diverter dying on me, my car started misfiring and I pulled over to try to not damage it. Unfortunately the constant rich mixture caused damage before my car misfired and threw a code and this caused my knock sensor to die. I was driving a 2008 Passat with the tfsi engine and replacing that sensor made me lose part of my sanity. Having a rich mixture can cause detonation after a while as well and this can total your engine. As you can see your turbo isn’t being damaged from a power off surge but in cars tuned or programmed for diverters this can be very dangerous. Luckily this man has a gti tuned for a blowoff valve so he doesn’t have many risk associated with this trick. I’d say the check engine light is just from messing with the vacuum system and not the flutter. There’s ways to stop the operation of diverters and blowoff valves to get this flutter but you’ll have to retune your car for it and it’ll make your car slower compared to just keeping the diverter. I’m pretty big into Audi and Vw and this seems to be a common misunderstanding when it comes to the turbo system. Personally if I wanted flutter it would be on a fully hand built engine and not a factory tsi with some bolt-ons.

    Common mistake people make is thinking it's compressor surge..its not its called air reversal. Some turbo seals won't like it though. Many are fine with it though.
    Compressor surge is a stall in turbo in a high gear low rpm situation say going up a hill. Very rare in modern turbos anyway.

      @@SvGTAPES an inlet pipes flow should exceed the surge flow,and surge sound shouldn't be that audible with an aftermarket inlet.
      The increased ID of the inlet pipe should absolutely far exceed the surge line,since when that compressed air exits through the turbo on its way back to the intake,that increased ID will no longer cause a bottle neck in outgoing air,even with increased pressure and flow,that air should be able to slide right by the impeller,that's why you don't see these kinds of cars making awesome surge sounds
      Curious,what inlet elbow are you using?
      Since this really shouldn't be possible with an increased ID in that elbow.

      @@SvGTAPES the cts intake doesn't run to the turbo,it runs to the inlet elbow,and I can see in the vid it's stock.
      I'm not breaking balls,was only curious because when I went full stage 2 including hpfp,I lost that sound due to the larger inlet ID, which I wanted to keep.
      When I was stage 1, I had used a "go fast bits" dv+(diverter valve) I replaced the stock spring with a 1 bar pressure spring,allowing the turbo to surge up to 1 bar,or 14.7 psi,sounding quite similar to the setup in this video,surge at lower pressure,blow off at higher pressure.
      I miss that sound lol,and even though the cars faster,it sounds way less threatening.
