I absolutely love SNEAKERS. My mom and I saw it in the theater when it first came out -- Her for the classic actors (Redford and Poitier), me for the story and the techno stuff ... I was in my early 20s. I agree. This movie is underrated.
I had the quote about the world being ran by 1s and 0s on my website in the 90s. Scared the crap out of everyone because wav files took so long to load on 32kbps
I remember this one clearly as a kid. The quote "in the future wars will be fought with information".... Always stuck with me. Spooky how accurate it was.
My love for Sneakers runs pretty deep. I live in Provo, and spend a lot of time at the Sundance Resort (I ski there nearly every day during the season). When I met Robert Redford briefly after watching a movie at the festival, I told him I only had one thing I wanted to say. "Too many secrets". He, "belly laughed" as soon as I said it with that smile and twinkle in his eye and simply said "Welcome to Sundance".
The fake manufactured Zapruder Film is the #1 film of all no doubt about it! She was great pretending to get her head blown off! Almost seemed real didn't it? She should be behind bars but we all know that won't happen will it? Fooled you didn't she?
One of my all-time favorite movies. The sad thing is that it was trying *so hard* to warn people about what the future of information warfare would look like, but it was still just a bit too geeky for people to pay attention. Plus, it's still one of the most realistic depictions of "hacking" ever put on film, especially the emphasis on low-tech bypasses and social engineering.
Sneakers is a very underrated movie, made in the early days of the Internet. It's quite a fun movie with an ensemble cast including Robert Redford, Sidney Poiter, River Phoenix, Dan Ackroyd et al.
This is a rare time that the word "underrated" really fits ( I think the word is heavily overused generally in UA-cam comments). I totally agree with you.
Yet another perfect blast from the past! I have this on DVD, and it gets regular play still. What’s remarkable is how well it aged, only so slightly despite it being almost 3 decades old. Of course, I remember what it was like back then; answering machines, the start of cyber-security awareness that rose to the Y2K panic.. I miss the 90’s.
The reason the older tech doesn’t age this movie badly is because it’s never presented as the cutting edge of the mainstream. This is about hackers who are “in the walls” doing unglamorous work. Any time a movie tries to show how up-to-date its gear is (eg from the 90’s: Hackers or The Net) it falls on its face during repeat viewings, but in Sneakers, its the characters and the heist(s) that keep our interest. The tech is just their tools of the trade.
On the accuracy it's probably why it didn't do as well as it should have. There is usually solid basis to the hacking in hacking based movies and tv shows but they don't trust the audience to understand and stay engaged with the story without making it sexier with fancy graphic representation which ruins it. Mr Robot does seem to have changed that, they seem to be much more trusting that these days people have enough basic knowledge that watching people doing social engineering and writing lines of code is something the audience can understand although its still not perfect
The passport scene was one of only two false notes in the movie. It could have been done differently and not been so forced. The other one being the scene where Poitier picks up the paper in the back of the car. I cannot beloved Redford would have purchased the paper and not seen Janek’s picture. Have a paper dispenser right there and have Poitier go get the paper while waiting for Redford and then go from there. Easy. ( Yes there could have been a deleted scene covering this, but…)
I am not an 80s/90s kid so I actually just watched the movie yesterday for the first time! It's one of my parents' faves! And I loved that all of the characters were older because honestly? I've always preferred films with older people than teenagers.
I always say that a good actor can make you like them, a good actor can make you hate them, but a great actor can do both. David Strathairn is an actor who can definitely do both. His character in Sneakers easily makes you love the guy, then you see him play a complete monster in the film 'Dolores Claiborne' and you wonder whether you can ever like the guy ever again, but you do :)
I used to watch this with my Dad in the 90s and watched it again fairly recently. Definitely holds up. Chillingly prescient. Great characters and good comedic moments peppered in there as well.
I just recommended this movie to somebody yesterday, and today I found out Sidney Poitier died. RIP. He was legendary in so many roles, but Sneakers has always been one of my guilty pleasures.
I saw this in the movies with my parents at like age 9. I still love this movie and idk why its so underappreciated. This in top 20 and still in my yearly rotation of viewings
I love the balance and tone of this film. It's serious and suspenseful at times, yet has comic levity and tongue in cheek moments that gives credit to the audience. A rarity to find these days. Great review as always 👍
TOO MANY SECRETS not often a movie so on the nose. Great line, excellent cast some very funny dialogue and a great Redford pratfall over a counter and gorgeous Mary McDonell
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie!!! It was one of the few VHS tapes I owned growing up so I watched it constantly. Such a funny and charming little comedy/heist movie! Plus, River Phoenix is so adorable in it 😢
SNEAKERS is such an entertaining film, you don't even realize how good it is while you're watching it; totally sneaks up on you like a Long Island Ice Tea. And the casting is nigh-perfect!
Being a teenager in the 90's, I saw this on the big screen. A most excellent cloak and dagger picture. One of the most impressive aspects of this movie is the late great James Horner's score. A great underrated score in his already splendid filmography.
Hey! As a fellow fan of the score I recently found out that LalaLand Records released an expanded score a few months ago so figured I should share that with you!
I worked at a movie theater when this came out. Had to build the movie from many reels onto one big platter. After that you have to watch the movie once to make sure its assembled right. I wasn't excited about watching it but man a surprise it was! Such a great movie, watch it about once every year or so.
I saw this movie at the cinema when it first came out. I've always loved this film. I love that the hacking in this film is portrayed relatively realistically. I love the connection this film has with wargames as the writers came up with the idea while researching that film.
Love this movie! Watch my copy often. "We passed a garden party" "That building screams get away" "You can ask for anything, and you want her number?" Awesome little lines like " Whistler, I hate to tell you this, but your blind"!!!!
I really enjoyed this film and loved the score by the late James Horner. I really think that the film would've been a smash hit had it included bigger action scenes.
Yeah but then it'd be less intertesting and believable. Do you see any of the characters in this movie coming out well in a gun fight?....Well maybe Sydnee's character.😅😅
Hate to be nit pick but at 8:06 call Steven Tubaloski's (Probably not spelled correctly) character Warner Brans, it is actually Warner Brandis. Love this movie though, have it on my external hard drive with a bunch of other favorite movies.
For people who were teenagers when this came out, this film holds a special place in hearts. It also introduced me to the legends Robert Redford and Sydney Poitier. Great film.
Absolutely LOVED this film as a kid. Having such a stellar cast was one thing, but the story was just so well put together too. I loved James Horner’s score for this one also.
My dad rented this from the video store when it was a fresh new release, it had a stellar cast and the story was pretty interesting but at times was a little slow going, but I enjoyed it overall, own it on DVD now.
Sneakers is completely underrated and should not be thought of in the same category as other techno-thriller/dramas that haven't aged well because they are based on tech that is now generations old. It's a thriller first, so the technology being our of date doesn't impact it as much as say a movie like The Net (which wasn't that great when it came out). I was 22 when Sneakers came out.
Every time I am asked by an automated voice prompt for my password I say, "my voice is my passport, verify me." At least once a week I say this. Love this movie.
One of my favorite films of ALL time. Being in IT and around computers since the early 80's I enjoyed the semi-realism of the hacking and phreaking scenes. I use alot of quotes from this films, they're classic.
I loved how quick Cosmo knew there was no way a computer paired Mary and Steven together for a date. also, of course it's underrated, but I think the scene of Whistler walking Brice back through his kidnapping and using just the audio clues he figured out where they went. (after figuring out the outdoor party he heard was a bunch of birds all cackling.)
I saw this in the theater, and I loved it from beginning to end. I have probably watched it more than 30 times since then, and I never get tired of it. It was so very well done, and with such a great cast. RIP River Phoenix
One of the first VHS tapes I ever bought. Got it used in an old mom and pop video store, remember those?! I had just seen it on rental, loved it largely because it was nice to see Sydney Pontiac back on the screen and of course it's one of the most incredible ensemble casts of all time. River Phoenix was the talent of his generation, aykroyd, Kingsley and Redford are giants, David strathairn is probably the most underrated American actor there is. I watch this at least once every few years. It has actually been on either HBO or Showtime quite a bit in the last couple months because I've bumped into it a number of times and watched bits and pieces of it.
A super film. The combined talent is off the wall. "Wars aren't won with bombs and bullets, its about who controls the INFORMATION". I've always loved that quote.
I had a chance to watch this movie in Times Square, but there was just a billboard for it and even though my dad explained to me that it wasn't about shoes, I wasn't interested. Me and my mom ended up watching it a lot on VHS and every time it was on Cable.
I never saw this when it first came out - I think it was when I rented it from Blockbuster (eeekkk!). But damn, did I love it! I grew up with Mr Poitier watching his films with my dad every time they came on TV, and tech was just starting to 'take off' and becoming more normal. It was/ is such a great film to me - thanks for doing the video!
Martin: Anybody remember how to defeat an electronic keypad Crease: Don't even joke about that Martin. Those things impossible Martin: Think I'm joking? Looks like they just put it in Crease: Oh boy Mother: Here this might help. An old buddy of mine was in the Desert Storm, sent it to me. Right Martin: Uh-huh, uh-huh. Yeah Martin: Ri--yeah Martin: Okay. I'll give it a shot WHAM kick on the door Martin: That worked. Best scene of the movie in my opinion
I never get tired of watching this film. FWIW though, I'd class whistler as more of a phreaker than a hacker, based on his nickname and that he has perfect pitch :)
I remember first watching little snippets of this movie. I think HBO or maybe VHS at my cousin's house when I was little and this was 92. so this must have been like a really '90s. I don't know, maybe like 93.94 but man this movie just stuck with me and I remember a lot about it and it seems so high tech and cool. that's why I stuck with me and then later on when I was adult when I found another video store I flooded back all these memories. then I just love to even more cuz I was able to appreciate it more as an adult and I have it on DVD. and yeah it really is one of my favorite movies ever. And it still holds up. believe me technology wise I'm surprise him. that stuff was even shown because it's dipping into some scary information. great movie perfect!
This was one of my favorite movies when I was a teenager absolutely. I had it on VHS and wore the VHS out because I watched it probably hundreds of times.
People having never seen this film kind of blows my mind. The cast, the script, the MUSIC. It’s a very special film. And ho boy does it make you think.
I love this movie. One of my absolute favorites that nobody else has seen...nor will put in the time to see. It's a shame people ask for, then ignore advice.
I was around 10 when i saw this on TV and recorded on VHS. Watched it every day for a long time. I rewatched yesterday, and still holds up after 30 years. Interesting cast, good chemistry and great character writing. It's amazing how is fast paced and you catching up the story very quickly. Checked the director, shame his next project was decade after this one . Oh yeah.. and i still got crash on the blonde police girs that Phoenix was asking her number 🤣
I remember this movie being a really big deal when it came out. The theatre was quite packed when I saw it, I guess I am surprised to see it on your "...Never saw" retrospective.
Yeah, making over a 100 million domestic in the early 90’s, adjusted for inflation, that’s a pretty good hit. I’m sure it did great on video ad well… but hey, it’s a good trip down memory lane.
1) Um, Cosmo was not abandoned by Marty as Cosmo tricked Marty into going for food. 2) It does have a nice mix of humor and drama. 3) It still ends up being left-wing at the end. It also ignores that, while one can hack into a bank system, there is still a trail of the transactions (even back then).
This was one of the few movies my entire family liked and could agree to watch together. We had to buy a second copy after watching and wearing the first tape.
This is one of my favorite movies. I still love it an watch it often. Such a good 90's hidden gem. I wish that it was more popular today. Great story, fun tech for the time, and just a really good adventure.
Incredible cast, a disturbingly prescient script that has aged like fine wine, one of the all-time great comedic cameos from James Earl Jones. And a horrifyingly underrated score - one of James Horner's masterpieces (having Branford Marsalis available certainly didn't hurt, my god). He's really at the height of his powers here - by the time Braveheart and Titanic were released a few years later, he'd already gotten into a pretty heavy state of derivativeness that only got worse as the years went on. But he's got full command of his creativity and mastery here.
I first saw Sneakers on home video in 1998 when I rented the cassette. It has been one of my favorites since that time. It was ahead of it's time in terms of it's subject and message and still holds up remarkably well today. Endlessly rewatchable.
I saw _Sneakers_ when it came out; I've always loved it. Two of my favourite lines (which I'm probably paraphrasing): first, as they're surrounded by the flock of vocal geese, "Congratulations, remind me to make you an honourary blind person..." Also: "Wait... A computer matched _her_ with _him?_ I don't think so."
I absolutely love SNEAKERS. My mom and I saw it in the theater when it first came out -- Her for the classic actors (Redford and Poitier), me for the story and the techno stuff ... I was in my early 20s.

I always stop to watch it whenever it ran on late night reruns

I remember this one clearly as a kid. The quote "in the future wars will be fought with information".... Always stuck with me. Spooky how accurate it was.
"It's not about who has the most bullets! It's about *who controls the information!* "
You said exactly what I was thinking lol
plot twist, Coz was the good guy and Marty was the gullible rube.
I rewatched this recently and it still holds up.
Oh wow that's so cool. I'm so glad he responded that way
I wonder how he would've reacted if you had said "Cootys Rat Semen"
Great story!
This film is a Mirror to Jurassic Park.
Say THAT to Redford and watch his expression change.

The way they figured out which bridge Marty was taken across was absolutely genius to high school me back in the day!
I cannot tell you how much I love this movie. It is sublime.
Yet another perfect blast from the past! I have this on DVD, and it gets regular play still. What’s remarkable is how well it aged, only so slightly despite it being almost 3 decades old. One of my FAVORITE movies in my early 20's!!!
The reason the older tech doesn’t age this movie badly is because it’s never presented as the cutting edge of the mainstream. This is about hackers who are “in the walls” doing unglamorous work. This is one of my favorite movies, and probably the most Accurate Hacker movie ever made. :)
"I can't kill my friend...kill my friend." 😂
On the accuracy it's probably why it didn't do as well as it should have. There is usually solid basis to the hacking in hacking based movies and tv shows but they don't trust the audience to understand and stay engaged with the story without making it sexier with fancy graphic representation which ruins it. Mr Robot does seem to have changed that, they seem to be much more trusting that these days people have enough basic knowledge that watching people doing social engineering and writing lines of code is something the audience can understand although its still not perfect
Oh hell yeah this movie is incredible. “My voice is my passport” makes me chuckle every time I hear it.
"This is my last computer date."
"Wait. A computer matched her with him? I don't think so."
Lame as hell but I love it. 😆
Funny you mention the line where all hell broke loose in the movie =)
The passport scene was one of only two false notes in the movie. It could have been done differently and not been so forced. The other one being the scene where Poitier picks up the paper in the back of the car. I cannot beloved Redford would have purchased the paper and not seen Janek’s picture. Have a paper dispenser right there and have Poitier go get the paper while waiting for Redford and then go from there. Easy. ( Yes there could have been a deleted scene covering this, but…)
This is one of my Favorite Redford movies. This and The Natural. The movie still works today because of the whole who watches the watchers.
Have you seen all is lost? That's really good
I am not an 80s/90s kid so I actually just watched the movie yesterday for the first time! It's one of my parents' faves! And I loved that all of the characters were older because honestly? I've always preferred films with older people than teenagers.
David Strathairn is super under-appreciated. Dude kills it in every movie.

I loved this movie when it came out. It's been so long since I've last seen it, I think it's time to give it another go.
I LOVE this movie and end up watching it about once a year. Wonderful cast and they shine.
Truly an underrated retro tech and quirky spy thriller. Love this movie.
Seen many times. Wonderful cast, Great pace and fun to watch.
Oh great now i have to go watch this movie again...cheers
The part when the blind guy is driving is hilarious. I saw this with my mom I think. She loves Redford.
GD I loved this movie all my life! I had to pull out my old CD and I listened to the soundtrack while I was running errands this morning
_Sneakers_ is a *perfect* film. Makes for a good "90s Golden Age" double feature with 1993's _Dave._
Happy Belated Birthday, Mr. Redford!
This was my favourite movie as a tween. About time I revisit it I think!
Truly a hidden gem
What a good pick. I love that movie and i watch it every time, when it's aired. Very good cast, too. 🥰
I watched SNEAKERS in theaters back in 1992. I loved it!! I still reference it to this day!
Big Redford fan so I went to see it as soon as it came out and I loved it. Then rented it as soon as it came out on VHS. Great movie.
I first saw Sneakers on home video in 1998 when I rented the cassette. It has been one of my favorites since that time. It was ahead of it's time in terms of it's subject and message and still holds up remarkably well today. Endlessly rewatchable.
Seen it so many times. Love this movie.
I absolutely LOVE this movie. I haven't seen it in ages. I'm watching it tonight.
I saw _Sneakers_ when it came out; I've always loved it.
Two of my favourite lines (which I'm probably paraphrasing): first, as they're surrounded by the flock of vocal geese, "Congratulations, remind me to make you an honourary blind person..."
Also: "Wait... A computer matched _her_ with _him?_ I don't think so."
Saw it theaters when I was 13 years old. Had an absolute blast. It was one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.
