SNEAKERS (1992) - The Best Movie You Never Saw
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- In 1992, Universal released the star-studded techno-thriller SNEAKERS, starring Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd, David Strathairn, Mary McDonnell, Ben Kingsley, and the late, great River Phoenix. Cutting edge thirty years ago, nowadays it's a fun-filled relic of its time, complete with dial-up modems and nostalgic tech from an era when the internet was starting to enter the mainstream. Written by the same duo behind WARGAMES, SNEAKERS was a modest hit when it first came out but is often overlooked nowadays, which is why we thought it would be a great movie to feature on this week's The Best Movie You Never Saw!

#Sneakers #RobertRedford #TheBestMovieYouNeverSaw
I absolutely love SNEAKERS. My mom and I saw it in the theater when it first came out -- Her for the classic actors (Redford and Poitier), me for the story and the techno stuff ... I was in my early 20s.
I agree. This movie is underrated.
I was 22 when this came out.
I had the quote about the world being ran by 1s and 0s on my website in the 90s. Scared the crap out of everyone because wav files took so long to load on 32kbps
Holy shit I just got done writing almost the same thing you did word for word.
I always stop to watch it whenever it ran on late night reruns
Same here
I remember this one clearly as a kid. The quote "in the future wars will be fought with information".... Always stuck with me. Spooky how accurate it was.
"It's not about who has the most bullets! It's about *who controls the information!* "
You said exactly what I was thinking lol
plot twist, Coz was the good guy and Marty was the gullible rube.
"what do you want"
"world peace and good will to all men"
"We are the United States Government! We don't do that sort of thing"
i loved that line
"Try"
I want a Winnebago.
Tahiti is not in Europe!
When you get the box give him geography lessons. Until then he goes to tahiti!
The young lady with the Uzi. Is she single?
This is one of my favorite movies, and probably the most Accurate Hacker movie ever made. :)
"I can't kill my friend...kill my friend." 😂
On the accuracy it's probably why it didn't do as well as it should have. There is usually solid basis to the hacking in hacking based movies and tv shows but they don't trust the audience to understand and stay engaged with the story without making it sexier with fancy graphic representation which ruins it. Mr Robot does seem to have changed that, they seem to be much more trusting that these days people have enough basic knowledge that watching people doing social engineering and writing lines of code is something the audience can understand although its still not perfect
Sneakers is a very underrated movie, made in the early days of the Internet. It's quite a fun movie with an ensemble cast including Robert Redford, Sidney Poiter, River Phoenix, Dan Ackroyd et al.
Before "The Matrix", "Hackers" and "Swordfish"!
This is a rare time that the word "underrated" really fits ( I think the word is heavily overused generally in UA-cam comments). I totally agree with you.
One of my all-time favorite movies. The sad thing is that it was trying *so hard* to warn people about what the future of information warfare would look like, but it was still just a bit too geeky for people to pay attention. Plus, it's still one of the most realistic depictions of "hacking" ever put on film, especially the emphasis on low-tech bypasses and social engineering.
"This is my last computer date."
"Wait. A computer matched her with him? I don't think so."
Lame as hell but I love it. 😆
Funny you mention the line where all hell broke loose in the movie =)
The way they figured out which bridge Marty was taken across was absolutely genius to high school me back in the day!
My love for Sneakers runs pretty deep. I live in Provo, and spend a lot of time at the Sundance Resort (I ski there nearly every day during the season). When I met Robert Redford briefly after watching a movie at the festival, I told him I only had one thing I wanted to say. "Too many secrets". He, "belly laughed" as soon as I said it with that smile and twinkle in his eye and simply said "Welcome to Sundance".
Oh wow that's so cool. I'm so glad he responded that way
I wonder how he would've reacted if you had said "Cootys Rat Semen"
Great story!
This film is a Mirror to Jurassic Park.
Say THAT to Redford and watch his expression change.
The Algorithm is OUR Black Box
The fake manufactured Zapruder Film is the #1 film of all no doubt about it! She was great pretending to get her head blown off! Almost seemed real didn't it? She should be behind bars but we all know that won't happen will it? Fooled you didn't she?
lies
The reason the older tech doesn’t age this movie badly is because it’s never presented as the cutting edge of the mainstream. This is about hackers who are “in the walls” doing unglamorous work. Any time a movie tries to show how up-to-date its gear is (eg from the 90’s: Hackers or The Net) it falls on its face during repeat viewings, but in Sneakers, its the characters and the heist(s) that keep our interest. The tech is just their tools of the trade.
I rewatched this recently and it still holds up.
David Strathairn is super under-appreciated. Dude kills it in every movie.
I always say that a good actor can make you like them, a good actor can make you hate them, but a great actor can do both. David Strathairn is an actor who can definitely do both. His character in Sneakers easily makes you love the guy, then you see him play a complete monster in the film 'Dolores Claiborne' and you wonder whether you can ever like the guy ever again, but you do :)
And in The Expanse TV show. Incredible performance.
He is SUPER nice in real life too.
Yeah he’s played alot of memorable characters in so many great movies. My favs of his are Eight Men Out, Sneakers, Bourne Ultimatum and Lincoln.
@@RadioNul he's my favorite character from the expanse by far, gotta love ashford
Yet another perfect blast from the past! I have this on DVD, and it gets regular play still. What’s remarkable is how well it aged, only so slightly despite it being almost 3 decades old. Of course, I remember what it was like back then; answering machines, the start of cyber-security awareness that rose to the Y2K panic.. I miss the 90’s.
This is one of my Favorite Redford movies. This and The Natural. The movie still works today because of the whole who watches the watchers.
Have you seen all is lost? That's really good
Every time I watch this film I'm amazed how good it actually is.
I cannot tell you how much I love this movie. It is sublime.
Oh hell yeah this movie is incredible. “My voice is my passport” makes me chuckle every time I hear it.
SNEAKERS is such an entertaining film, you don't even realize how good it is while you're watching it; totally sneaks up on you like a Long Island Ice Tea. And the casting is nigh-perfect!
I really enjoyed this film and loved the score by the late James Horner. I really think that the film would've been a smash hit had it included bigger action scenes.
Agreed, Horner's score is amazing!
@@jamesonp3873 definitely
@@jamesonp3873 Great Horn work from Brandord Marsalis
@@aplleyva 100%!
Yeah but then it'd be less intertesting and believable. Do you see any of the characters in this movie coming out well in a gun fight?....Well maybe Sydnee's character.😅😅
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie!!! It was one of the few VHS tapes I owned growing up so I watched it constantly. Such a funny and charming little comedy/heist movie! Plus, River Phoenix is so adorable in it 😢
I re-watched this recently, a great film and it still stands up.
FANTASTIC cast.
I still quote this movie - "no more secrets Marty"
cootys rat semen
My dad rented this from the video store when it was a fresh new release, it had a stellar cast and the story was pretty interesting but at times was a little slow going, but I enjoyed it overall, own it on DVD now.
I am not an 80s/90s kid so I actually just watched the movie yesterday for the first time! It's one of my parents' faves! And I loved that all of the characters were older because honestly? I've always preferred films with older people than teenagers.
I used to watch this with my Dad in the 90s and watched it again fairly recently. Definitely holds up. Chillingly prescient. Great characters and good comedic moments peppered in there as well.
Sneakers is completely underrated and should not be thought of in the same category as other techno-thriller/dramas that haven't aged well because they are based on tech that is now generations old. It's a thriller first, so the technology being our of date doesn't impact it as much as say a movie like The Net (which wasn't that great when it came out). I was 22 when Sneakers came out.
I love the balance and tone of this film. It's serious and suspenseful at times, yet has comic levity and tongue in cheek moments that gives credit to the audience. A rarity to find these days. Great review as always 👍
GREAT movie... have it on original DVD ... still watch it to this day!!!
I saw this in the movies with my parents at like age 9. I still love this movie and idk why its so underappreciated. This in top 20 and still in my yearly rotation of viewings
Being a teenager in the 90's, I saw this on the big screen. A most excellent cloak and dagger picture. One of the most impressive aspects of this movie is the late great James Horner's score. A great underrated score in his already splendid filmography.
Hey! As a fellow fan of the score I recently found out that LalaLand Records released an expanded score a few months ago so figured I should share that with you!
A few suggestions for the next one
The Big Hit (1998)
Red Heat (1988)
Bulletproof (1996)
Zero Tolerance (1994)
The Package (1989)
Amazing, thoughtful movie - way ahead of its time - also appreciated disabled people for their special abilities...
BUT now I am going to rewatch it! LOVE LOVE LOVE this film!!!
LOL AOL... THX. Ugh I miss the 90's. Did we live through the best of humanity? Life just gets meh and meher.
Its your..... MOTHER lol. Idk why that was always so funny to me
Seen this at least a 100 times since it came out, one of my all time favourites
Hate to be nit pick but at 8:06 call Steven Tubaloski's (Probably not spelled correctly) character Warner Brans, it is actually Warner Brandis.
Love this movie though, have it on my external hard drive with a bunch of other favorite movies.
1) Um, Cosmo was not abandoned by Marty as Cosmo tricked Marty into going for food.
2) It does have a nice mix of humor and drama.
3) It still ends up being left-wing at the end. It also ignores that, while one can hack into a bank system, there is still a trail of the transactions (even back then).
I saw this movie at the cinema when it first came out. I've always loved this film. I love that the hacking in this film is portrayed relatively realistically. I love the connection this film has with wargames as the writers came up with the idea while researching that film.
Amazing movie! I'm surprised you didn't mention James Horner's incredibly underrated score. Really elevates the tension in the serious scenes
Branford Marsalis too
One of my favorite movies
I love this movie, but you forgot one great star who was also in this. the Great James Earl Jones
I remember this movie being a really big deal when it came out. The theatre was quite packed when I saw it, I guess I am surprised to see it on your "...Never saw" retrospective.
Yeah, making over a 100 million domestic in the early 90’s, adjusted for inflation, that’s a pretty good hit. I’m sure it did great on video ad well… but hey, it’s a good trip down memory lane.
Martin: Anybody remember how to defeat an electronic keypad
Crease: Don't even joke about that Martin. Those things impossible
Martin: Think I'm joking? Looks like they just put it in
Crease: Oh boy
Mother: Here this might help. An old buddy of mine was in the Desert Storm, sent it to me. 'course he was on the other side
Martin: Come on Crease, there's got to be a way around these things
Crease: All right, all right (takes a deep breath) This might work
Martin: Yeah...yeah
Martin: Bu...yeah. Right
Martin: Uh-huh, uh-huh. Yeah
Martin: Ri--yeah
Martin: Okay. I'll give it a shot
WHAM kick on the door
Martin: That worked.
Best scene of the movie in my opinion
LOL!!!!!!!!
Sneakers was a movie ahead of its time considering how far tech has today.
Love this movie! Watch my copy often.
"We passed a garden party"
"That building screams get away"
"You can ask for anything, and you want her number?"
Awesome little lines like " Whistler, I hate to tell you this, but your blind"!!!!
the tech has aged, yes - but who cares, it’s still a great film.
A great underrated film. A fun and suspenseful caper film that deserves more attention and love.
Oh great now i have to go watch this movie again...cheers
I never get tired of watching this film. FWIW though, I'd class whistler as more of a phreaker than a hacker, based on his nickname and that he has perfect pitch :)
The two other people i know with perfect pitch are both blind!!! But my son can tell you which musical key you are hitting!!!!!
Brilliant movie! Used to watch it on repeat. Even my father-in-law loved it. Setec Astronomy!!!
One of my favorite films of ALL time. Being in IT and around computers since the early 80's I enjoyed the semi-realism of the hacking and phreaking scenes. I use alot of quotes from this films, they're classic.
FILM SUGGESTION: The Jacket 2005. Adrien Brody. Keira Knightley. Jennifer Jason Leigh. Film made no money, but it’s a great little sci-fi, time travel, drama.
Great Lines in this Movie:
- So it's a code breaker.
- No ..... it's THE Code Breaker.
I remember first watching little snippets of this movie. I think HBO or maybe VHS at my cousin's house when I was little and this was 92. so this must have been like a really '90s. I don't know, maybe like 93.94 but man this movie just stuck with me and I remember a lot about it and it seems so high tech and cool. that's why I stuck with me and then later on when I was adult when I found another video store I flooded back all these memories. then I just love to even more cuz I was able to appreciate it more as an adult and I have it on DVD. and yeah it really is one of my favorite movies ever. And it still holds up. believe me technology wise I'm surprise him. that stuff was even shown because it's dipping into some scary information. great movie perfect!
I just recommended this movie to somebody yesterday, and today I found out Sidney Poitier died. RIP. He was legendary in so many roles, but Sneakers has always been one of my guilty pleasures.
Came here after finding out he passed. Rip
Technically, Sneakers was a box office success. But for some reason, it doesn't have a lasting effect on pop-culture. 🤷🏿♂️
There's an interesting little Easter egg in the movie 'The Sum of All Fears' which ties it to 'Sneakers'. Lee Garlington, the actress who plays Dr. Elena Rhyzkov, the mistress of Donal Logue's character in 'Sneakers', appears in 'The Sum of All Fears', portraying Mary Pat Foley, a supervisor in the analyst department that Jack Ryan works in at CIA. One of Lee Garlington's lines in 'Sum of All Fears' asks about the mistress of a Russian that they're talking about in one scene, the mistress' name being Elena Rhyzkov.
I loved how quick Cosmo knew there was no way a computer paired Mary and Steven together for a date.
also, of course it's underrated, but I think the scene of Whistler walking Brice back through his kidnapping
and using just the audio clues he figured out where they went. (after figuring out the outdoor party he heard
was a bunch of birds all cackling.)
_Sneakers_ is a *perfect* film. Makes for a good "90s Golden Age" double feature with 1993's _Dave._
One of the most underrated heist movies along with Heist 2001 of Gene Hackman or Takers 2010 of Paul walker
I liked Takers also , not many people seen it . I think it was because ( and I no his real name just refuse to say it ) Aniken Skywalker and wannabe Ludicrous T.I. also Chris Brown where in the cast which BTW are all TERRIBLE actors.
One of my FAVORITE movies in my early 20's!!!
i've got to mention the amazing soundtrack by branford marsalis and james horner. it's different than your usual fare...it's both mysterious and playful. the woodwinds featured really help this music stand out from the rest of similar flicks in the genre. love this movie!
(edited a few hours later...) catch me if you can has the only other playful, yet suspenseful soundtrack i can come up with that is in the same vein, by the great john williams.☺
Forgot all about this movie. Been so long since I saw it on TV. It surprised me, I stuck it on because it was the thing that sucked least on TV that night. Turned out, it's a really good movie! I recommend.
I had a chance to watch this movie in Times Square, but there was just a billboard for it and even though my dad explained to me that it wasn't about shoes, I wasn't interested. Me and my mom ended up watching it a lot on VHS and every time it was on Cable.
I worked at a movie theater when this came out. Had to build the movie from many reels onto one big platter. After that you have to watch the movie once to make sure its assembled right. I wasn't excited about watching it but man a surprise it was! Such a great movie, watch it about once every year or so.
This is Dan aykroyds best movie because he’s just playing himself
Saw this in theater. Incredible cast and incredible prediction of what will come. Think about today and how technology companies control what we see and what we don’t see, shaping our opinion to their liking.
GD I loved this movie all my life! I had to pull out my old CD and I listened to the soundtrack while I was running errands this morning
One of my faves as a kid! Made me a lifelong Redford fan. All is lost is an amazing film too
Absolutely LOVED this film as a kid. Having such a stellar cast was one thing, but the story was just so well put together too. I loved James Horner’s score for this one also.
I probably watch this once per year. R.I.P. Sir Sidney.
YT stopped having these posts some up in my recommended videos even though I'm subscribed. Bs! Good thing I remembered to check the channel.
I love sneakers I watched it in 93 and rewatched it Monday on Amazon
Also ….hackers…the movie! 😎😎😎😎
"Remember to go real slow!" I quote that often impersonating Aykroyd and to date no one recognizes where the quote comes from.
seen it , own it and I like it.
I fucking adore this movie and this cast 😭 huge part of my childhood because my dad would watch it all the time so so good and the score is absolutely gorgeous. The technology might now be dated but I’ll still watch this ten times in a row over a lot of new stuff
I grew up in Hayward and always got a kick out of knowing the sound of the San Mateo bridge was an important plot point.
I was around 10 when i saw this on TV and recorded on VHS. Watched it every day for a long time. I rewatched yesterday, and still holds up after 30 years. Interesting cast, good chemistry and great character writing. It's amazing how is fast paced and you catching up the story very quickly.
Checked the director, shame his next project was decade after this one .
Oh yeah.. and i still got crash on the blonde police girs that Phoenix was asking her number 🤣
Seen many times. Wonderful cast, Great pace and fun to watch.
I worked at a theater when this movie came out. I saw it several times on the big screen... And I still have the poster.
Actually, I did see this in the theater when it was released. And it really is a fun movie.
We used to watch this one all the time. I need to buy a copy. It came out my senior year and being wanna be tech / crime guys we were in love with it.
But, I did see it at the theater, when it was first released. A really good movie.
Happy Belated Birthday, Mr. Redford!
it saw it when it came out on video. loved it then. may want to revisit it now. thank you
This was one of my favorite movies! I almost forgot about it.
Joblo instructed Robert Redford on how to be the natural.
Back when conspiracy theorists were seen as loveable and mostly harmless....
Before the media went up town cause they're lying so much lately yea?
I love this film. It’s a great ensemble cast who have great chemistry together.
I am pretty sure my mom took me to see this when it came out.
Setec Astronomy… cootys rat semen?
The most underrated film.
I loved this movie when it came out. It's been so long since I've last seen it, I think it's time to give it another go.
good prequel of winter soldier
Best soundtrack ever heard. Love the drive blind and the working out bridge bumps and ducks noise
Every time I am asked by an automated voice prompt for my password I say, "my voice is my passport, verify me." At least once a week I say this. Love this movie.
Watched on HBO many many times growing up. Always enjoyed it.
I saw sneakers last year in honor of river phoenix birthday it's a great movie 🥳🙂🤠😊
XXXOOO
This to me, is still one of the great movies of the 90's
Great script and great acting by such an amazing cast.
Your choice of movies is deadly. Right on the mark, every time
makes me wonder what the most 'JoBlo' JoBlo movie of all time is - lol
