Studios will now remember what the true definition of counter programming is. It's not blockbuster vs. blockbuster. It's genre vs. genre.
Now they better make a Bratz movie
This was the perfect storm of demographics coverage.
@@irmaramirez5873they made a "bratz" movie years ago. But you are right they should make a correct Bratz movie lol
A proper Monster High adaptation would have been killer
Let’s hope the bigger lesson they learn is that they don’t have to just reboot/reimagine the same ol stories over and over. Give us new ideas.
I think the prospect of a viral moment such as Barbenheimer is one of the hardest things to recreate. If Hollywood ever is able to do this again, it won’t be on purpose. Psychologists are literally trying to figure out the reasoning behind why things can become so viral without intention from the original creators
Ive seen people make jokes about it, because saw 10 and paw patrol both come out in September
@@benson5967here’s a difference between hype and viral. People were hyped about Top Gun Maverick but it didn’t go viral. Barbenheimer was truly a cultural event that happened accidentally. There’s no way those marketing teams expected this to happen.
@benson5967 it was intended to be viral but the way its viral is very different from what the creators wanted. The barbenheimer hype and all the memes of barbie having nukes on the background isn't intentional on their part it was more of an Internet culture thing that became mainstream
A lot of it is coincidence - and in this case humor! The fun of "Barbieheimer" just caught people right in the funny-feels.
"Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Pitch Perfect 2" opened on the same day, but it was pre-modern "viral" silliness. The Mad Max film did not get appreciated as entertainment writers could not wait to say the movie had been "Pitch-slapped."
Just one month ago, Barbie was projected to open with $50M, it more than tripled that. Oppenheimer was projected to open with $35M, it more than doubled that. Barbie has broken the record for the biggest domestic opening for a female director in Hollywood history, and Oppenheimer has become Nolan’s biggest opening outside of The Dark Knight trilogy. And this is the first time since Endgame that the domestic box office has hit $300M on a single 3-day weekend. What an incredible weekend at the box office!
Barbie projected 100M to 120M and oppenheimer projedted 50M as most nolan movies
@@AA-xv8lxyes more recently Barbie and Oppenheimer were projected to open around that, but as I said, a month ago, they were not.
Projections are never accurate. Gives me hope for blue beetle.
@@PaulyWally30 Im sorry bro, but Both of these movies strongly benefitted from barbenheimer. Blue beetle doesn't have that.
Hell I think 80 million would’ve been great numbers for Barbie alone so let alone Oppenheimer being that big
If I can dress up for a movie premiere like I saw everyone - EVERYONE - dolled out in pink for the Barbie premiere, then it’s an event. Reminds me of the best of blockbuster events - the communal aspect that hasn’t been replicated much outside of superhero, Star Wars, and Harry Potter releases.
Yep. Dresed in and get free ticket
Did Oppenheimer have Cosplay?
Grace, I'm on vacation here in the US from Belgium (staying at Disney Springs, Florida-), so I went to see both Oppenheimer and Barbie at the local AMC there. I have never, in my life, experienced the craziness that was going on there. People were dressed in Barbenheimer shirts, couples where the boyfriend was completely in pink and the girlfriend all in black. People were wearing hats, they laughed during Barbie and were respectful as hell during Oppenheimer. I had an AMAZING time and just for that novelty alone, i'd say the experience was worth it; and that's just the experience in itself, it really felt like an event.
The amount of people dresssed in pink at my local theaters whew
Okay time for your but remember our time Star Oppenheimer main villian for asian
Nice. Hope you had a great vacation. 💯👏🏽❤
It is interesting how much Barbie's brand recognition is being downplayed. Gerwig is good, the film is good too. But let's be honest, the hype is around the brand that's famous across generations and around the globe.
True
Now we need a Bratz movie

Fact. Most people have no idea who Greta is.
Exactly!
The Oscars wont pass the opportunity for a Barbenheimer in the best picture, they know the interest to watch that it will generate.
Yep. Well reviewed and popular. Barbie and Oppenheimer will get lots of noms. Production design, best adapted screenplay, best director, best lead actress, best supporting actor. Those are locks for noms. Maybe even Best Picture
Outside of production design I fail to see what Barbie could realistically have a chance at
The Oscars never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. These movies might just be too popular with the masses to actually win.
@@BlazerManiacNumber96
Hair and Make Up. Costume. Best song.
Best Film. Not because it actually is the best film, not because it has a chance of winning, but because they have ten spots "so why not" is what they're thinking.
Oppenheimer, however, may have and actual chance of winning (not saying it is going to win or has the biggest chance of winning, but it does have a chance of winning).
@@mabusestestament I could see it getting noms. But I don't think it has an actual chance of winning anything outside of hair and makeup (god call, I missed that one)
I don’t think this type of promotion can be purposely replicated. What studios should do is lean into the organic promo. It was nice to see the organizations that were covering these movies lean into it - which is a good example of how to do it
Lionsgate is trying "Saw Patrol" for the Saw X & Paw Patrol double bill. Absolutely not.
@@Grizmeyer omg talk about not understanding the assignment. They're sipping the delulu juice
Agreed. This was public/fan-made buzz and you can’t force it.

Saw Patrol is sending me 😂
Even in my small town here in the Netherlands everyone was dressed in pink to watch the Barbie movie! From teen girls and moms to dads and groups of boys who went to see it together. It was wonderful and such an experience! The movie broke a lot of records here and is currently the most watched movie of the year.
Ik was verkleed als Oppenheimer haha
Then Netherlands has failed its future generations
Neat ❤💯👏🏽
I think the success of Barbie goes to show just how prolific the Barbie brand still is in our society. As far as I'm aware, competitors like Bratz dolls aren't really prevalent in our cultural zeitgeist anymore, but there's still that lingering sense of a presence from Barbie. That's fascinating.
As you said, what most studios will forget is that this viral marketing was around 2 diametrically opposed films that just happen to be innovative and creative movies - and will never be replicated. Barbie appealed to so many demos (young kids, older Barbie fans, Ryan G. & Margot fans, etc.) with such a good message to boot and Oppenheimer is a 100% must-see in theater film from a director who has a brilliant track record (our 70mm showings are sold out through next weekend). It was an exciting weekend for us cinephiles. Cheers.

Oppenheimer might have a great longevity because there's a lot of people who want to check it out on IMAX and there were no IMAX screens available to accommodate everyone during the first weekend. Its challenge is to maintain people's desire to do that during the next three weeks at least.
All the good IMAX seats are sold out where I am for at least the next week.
All of the showings at the indianapolis imax showing it in 70mm are basically sold out through August 9. I wanted to see it again but can’t :(
According to Variety, almost 50% of Oppenheimer's ticket sales are from IMAX screenings. That is insanity.
Good point, but between the two, it’ll get killed in repeat viewings. I’ve seen both, and I’ll likely see Barbie again next weekend. I don’t know if I’ll be up to watch Oppenheimer again anytime soon.
@@derekjohnson8910 I want to see Oppenheimer in 70mm again so badly but can’t get a good seat.
Disney is not happy, and they’re gonna be less happy next week when Haunted Mansion falls behind both Barbie and Oppenheimer.

Neither is Ben Shapiro
In the grand scheme of things, box office having this kind of a massive moment post COVID is a good sign for all the major studios, Disney included. If Haunted Mansion falters because of it, I don't think Disney is going to be all that upset, it's small potatoes in the big picture.
Disney has Elemental doing pretty this summer.
Lady Bird made $79 million out of $10 million budget, Little Women made $218.9 million on $40 million budget, so Greta Gerwig is officially a juggernaut.

Mission Impossible getting beaten by Sound of Freedom is hugely embarrassing for Cruise and company. That’s crazy. I have no explanation for why people are not interested in seeing Dead Reckoning.
Part of it may be because it’s advertising couldnt even come close to all the attention Barbie and Oppenheimer we’re taking. On top of that, Barbie had a great marketing run that completely trumped anything MI was doing.

I think that the reason why female led superhero films don't do well in drawing in female moviegoers is because superheroes in general appeal mostly to males than females. The hard honest truth of the matter is that properties and franchises like Marvel,DC,and Star Wars appeal mostly (NOT SOLELY) to males. Where BARBIE is a property that appeals mostly (NOT SOLELY) to females.
Sounds reasonable. I can't see too many of the _Barbie_ audience identifying with _Atomic Blonde_ for example.
Women account for 46.67% of comic book readers so there is definitely an audience for marvel and dc movies among women. I follow a lot of female comic book nerds who know their shit
It’s just that a marvel and dc’s male writers have often failed to create compelling female narratives or they fail at adapting them well. Plus, women have no issue relating to male characters but the reverse isn’t always true for men.
You are correct. I remember hearing Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman (1st movie) doing well with male audiences despite a female lead.
Barbie wasn't advertised as "this movie isn't for you" which is always a loosing formula that they keep doing.
I’m curious about the comment that Oppenheimer was sold as a “comic book-like movie”, I don’t think I saw any promotion that even resembled something comic book-y or even blockbuster-y. Everything I saw was pretty cut and dry biopic/prestige drama promo
Idk why but Grace seems to have a vendetta against Oppenheimer, it absolutely was not marketed as a comic book like movie at all. It got the same marketing style as most of Nolan's other films outside of the Dark Knight trilogy: heavily reliant on cool visuals and booming soundtracks. Both were great movies, but I did like Oppenheimer a little bit more than Barbie.

@@griffgames9538 Bingo! Well said. In the end, this movie was far to be only for women. This was a movie for everyone about the human condition for anyone willing to listen.
This is nuts! I’m so happy to have been part of this amazing box office event. The most hype the theater has been since Spider No Way Home/Endgame. It was amazing seeing all the groups with custom shirts, and so many little troops of girls and folks wearing pink. Oppenheimer was devastating on a cultural level, but Barbie was more existential on a personal level for me. I loved them both!! So happy. Thank you, Grace ❤
So happy to see Greta Gerwig officially get recognized as one of the best directors today. Her career is just getting started. Love it!!
I always loved her as an actress too.
It was good to see Robert Downey Jr doing a serious role instead of being in another superhero costume. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Wow, Barbie was supposed to be merely counterprogramming, but then it won the weekend!
In the end, oppenheimer became counter programming to barbie.
Nolan’s films don’t make money
@@Him_Downstairs36lol
@@Him_Downstairs36he’s one of the greatest directors ever but okay
A HUGE round of applause needs to go to the marketing team for BOTH films . They need raises ! Outstanding work .
LOL 😂
Remember when Grace Randolph said Margot Robbie’s time as a leading lady able to open a movie big was done when Babylon failed?
Nobody remembers Babylon Grace! They just remember your last thing.
Which in Margot Robbie’s case is now the biggest opening of the year!!
Way to be a “Hollywood insider” Grace!
Way to read the tea leaves and share your insider takes and scoops with us 😂
@@P.90.603but barbie is literally margot robbie bro tf 🤣
@@P.90.603 So you think Barbie starring Amy Schumer would have been just as successful?
Greta Gerwig is going to torpedo her momentum with the fact she's writing the inevitable cinematic catastrophe that is Snow White.
Grace, Noah Baumbach is right there! He should definitely be involved with a Ken spinoff alongside Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie
I think it would have been funny if Ken had a post-credits or mid-credits scene that repeated the scene in _Transformers: Rise of the Beasts._
My theater I work at is already selling out weekday showings for Barbie so I suspect it might have a drop in the 50's, maybe even high 40's. It'd be amazing if it could drop only in the 30's though.
I just got out of the theater watching Oppenheimer and I think it is easily one of the best movies of the year
I agree. It’s a masterpiece.
I cannot wait to see it, i dont live in America so we dont really get like sold out tickets like the U.S do when they have to by tickets way in advance...I know some other people that really want to see it too so will see when we can all get together..im glad u liked it.......Barbie im sure i will see eventually...
@@BangTanPrettiNikki it isnt
@@itsbeyondme5560 to you!! To me it is👌🏾
@@itsbeyondme5560 Yes, it is. Especially compared to the diarrhea known as Barbie.
Saw Barbie last night in Nuremberg, Germany and was surprised all the English showings were sold out. I thought I'll have to wait until I was back in the USA to watch the movie. Also, almost everyone came in pink outfits.
A few things here. Perfect counter programming, perfect time of year people are out spending like crazy right before school starts back and both movies have huge IPs attached Barbie and Christopher Nolan who’s his own IP in my opinion.
Isn’t it obvious who should direct the Ken movie? Noah Baumbach! Just have him and Greta Gerwig switch roles
I will never forget the experience of going to see Barbie in theaters the weekend it came out. I've rarely ever seen a theater be so packed with people. Almost everyone (including myself) was dressed head to toe in pink and it was just incredible. It was so special that I got to be a part of a cultural phenomenon like this. I don't think we'll ever see another event like this be replicated by Hollywood, at least on purpose. The success of Barbie and Oppenheimer was truly driven by the people. Even my grandparents are aware of how big a deal it is. This weekend will certainly go down in the Hollywood history books. One for the ages.
yikes that 64 percent drop for Dead recockning
If Nolan gets to direct Bond he will immediately cast Tom Hardy and I’m here for it
I don't think the Bond franchise like superstar directors overshadowing the movie, that's why they rejected Spielberg.
Here's an angle for ya... I LOVED Oppenheimer, but seeing it once was good enough for me. I was cool to see a 3 hour Avatar the Way of Water more than once but I'm not into seeing another 3 hr Oppenheimer again. Barbie however I've seen it 3 times and it's awesome hearing people laugh and enjoy themselves in the theater. So this is what's gonna hurt Oppenheimer I believe. Barbie will get more repeat viewings.
Not really. A lot of people will watch Oppenheimer multiple times to literally catch every detail.
@@mikedavison1466have fun 😂
I am very confused. When was Oppenheimer ever marketed as a superhero film? 🤔
I’m not seeing either of thses movies no matter how much money they make . I’ll wait till they come to streaming and not have to pay to watch either one.
There's been so many movies I wanted to see this summer but its so time consuming that it's hard to find time every week to do it. I really think the whole box office would benefit from cutting down on the commercials and trailers to get people in and out faster. If it didn't take half a day to go to the movies it would be easier to go more often.
Yep… guaranteed 30 mins of previews
For the most part, Im kind of done with "same old same old" cinema. These two movies were fresh and that's what I like to go see. I will for sure go see Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon. They look quite good.
Top Gun Maverick wasn't the 7th film in a franchise that had a Part 1 in the title.
I love Tom and McQ but I don't know what they were thinking with the Part 1. The title couldn't have meant that much to them that they couldn't have come up with two distinct titles just in case Part 1 scares ppl away
For some reason I just can't retain the title to _Mission Impossible 7: ?? part 1,_ though even remembering _Mission Impossible: Fallout_ was difficult.
Seeing Barbie's numbers makes me so glad that professional clowns like Benny Shapiro didn't get their way this time around, as HARD as they tried.
I can only hope that people are finally seeing how ridiculous these millionaire political trolls look, shaking their fingers at everything they don't like, telling us what to watch and what not to watch.
You mean like how every movie site pretty much blasted Sound of Freedom only for it to backfire. A movie with no fanfare costing nothing to make breaks 100 million. Quit acting like liberals including Grace dont play dirty!!
I'll never understand why a grown men would get upset about a movie based on a girls toyline? You think it *WOULDN'T* pander to that audience? What are you expecting, a John Wick type movie?
The other side tried to do the same to Sound of Freedom, and failed MISERABLY. So lets not get carried away.
I hope they both have great holds and would do a Barbenheimer again if I could find the time. If I had to choose one, it’s Oppenheimer I want to see again in the cinema. The cinema I saw it in may not have been IMAX but it was the biggest screen possible where I live and the Dolby ATMOS sound was incredible. I had no problem understanding the dialogue and in fact found that despite it being so talky, it was easy to comprehend. There was only one moment when the soundtrack played over the dialogue but I have no doubt that was deliberate. I loved how the dialogue and soundtrack were structured to play like action, building the tension and revving up towards the climactic explosion. Nolan demanded and received top of their game acting performances from his cast. Barbie was also beautifully acted, thought provoking and so entertaining. I was surprised at the emotional moments and also at the fantastic music numbers. You know, think I will make the time to see both again in the cinema…
I’ve been watching secret invasion and BOY OH BOY Oppenheimer was the perfect change of pace for me, I loved it
I watched Barbie and Oppenheimer on Friday night. Pulled a double feature. What a night!
hearing Barbie's Sunday is coming in higher (45 mil) than expected, which would give it a 164 million opening weekend (we'll find out for sure tomorrow). That's crazy! Also bodes well for the weekday totals and next weekend holds.
I have to admit that I went to Mission: Impossible 7 this weekend. I didn't have the time or money for Barbenheimer.
