Hey Everyone ! Just a quick video about some tests iv done with the new 15c battery! I'm pretty impressed so far ! as always any questions let me know !
The battery has a labeled 20% more capacity and your expectation is in between 7 and 14% longer recording time. I would say that given possible measurement differences/errors, unknown condition of the cam and the subject / light over time, very low sample size, age/condition of the batteries the result of 23,7% you got is nothings so full of the chart that it should have "caught you off guard", ....
Simple V*Ah=Wh calculation and the "c" has 20% more juice than the "b". 2h47 is 24% more and the 4% is likely due to ageing of the older battery. Still, 1/5th more from the same size/volume package is remarkable.
Thanks for this. I searched and searched everywhere for a definite answer to "will the c version perform better on my D850 than the a or b. Even Nikon don't answer that clearly. So thank you!!
I was out for 5 hours on a shoot with non-stop use with my Z7 II and the MB-N11 Power Battery Pack and got 2100 shots with power still left in the battery. First hour I was swapping Z Mount lenses and the last 4 I was walking with the Z 24-70 2.8S lens. I was pleasantly surprised on the performance of the EN-EL15c battery. As of Tuesday December 22 Nikon USA Dealers have the battery in-stock. I have 3 arriving 12/23... 1 more for the Z7 II and 2 to replace my Z7 Batteries.
That 1hr 4k video in z6 drained 15c battery from 100% to 78% is still very impressive and useful. Which means it will last long enough for most people with a decent phone powerbank with USBC power delivery.
Thanks for update, it was a long shot for Z6&7 users to charge and use cam at the same time. Gues for that feature we'll have to wait for next gen cameras. Nevertheless c battery still is a great improvement. Thanks again and looking forward for next video. Keep safe!!!
Man, where have you been my whole Nikon professional life? Glad I found ya. Yor reviews save me a ton of time figuring out new gear myself. So glad I found ya! Subbed!
Hey Ricci One of the frustrating issues I have with the batteries is not battery life, but stand by charge when not in use Often I fully charge the battery and if I haven’t used the camera for a month or so, half the charge has gone I wish this was improved as I have high quality cordless power tools where there is no apparent loss over similar time All the best
Thank you, Ricci. Nice! Although I don't have any big worries about my existing (b & c) batteries, I appreciate any incremental updates and improvements.
Are you familiar with the dummy EN-EL15 for running your camera off an AC fed power supply (PSU)? Tether Tools (TT) have an adapter to place in between the dummy and a PSU. That adapter has a rechargeable battery in it. Place dummy, connect TT adapter, start rolling, plug AC into TT adapter continue rolling, unplug AC and hook up a USB power bank to the TT adapter, continue rolling without draining the TT battery. Uninterrupted power supply at its best. Or Buy a Nikon battery grip. Or, I don't understand these complaints about the Z 6 and Z 7
Thanks much for this Ricci. Saved me a lot of digging and research. Looks like the "C" version is worth the cost. I really need to replace some of my older versions even though they still work!
Thank you, yes very useful video. Looking behind you, what looks like a reasonably heavy lens on that small tripod seems very precarious... I couldn’t stop looking at it...😲
Great information and useful going forward. Battery information may suit certain types of user requirements like wedding and wildlife areas that some people require.
Great video Ricci yet again! For those Z users out there - you can get a dummy battery with a plate and a sony battery for around $80USD. My Z6 runs for 11.5 hours on a single charge. Im sure the Z7s and Z6s will use these new En-EL15c's as well
so hears the question. Is it better to have several off-brand batteries or to have a single OEM battery. Because for the price these go for one can get three generic ones.
Nikon may add the 15c usb charging to the Z 6/7 later via firmware is my assumption. I don't see why they wouldn't. It may simply be a list of batteries in the code which turns on the feature and they haven't put it in the older cameras yet. Just a theory though.
Did you try the 15c in Z6 with it unplugged from the wall charger? Does the battery level drop the same (76%) or does it drop more? Maybe the Z6 cannot fully charge the battery while in use, but if it charges is a little it can then extended the usage even more. For example - my MBP 15 can be powered from an external battery enough that I extend my run time for more than an hour compared to using only MBPs battery.
Thanks for your informative videos! A quick question about compatibility of the en-el15c battery... The NikonUSA website only lists five cameras that are compatible with the EN-El15C battery, and those listed are Z5, Z7, Z6, D780, and D850. You list the D500, D750, and D7500 as also compatible. Do you happen to have a reference to an official Nikon website that confirms this broader compatibility? I am especially interested in compatibility with the D500 camera body. Thanks in advance. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos!
Did I miss it? You told us we need a camera which supports charging while in use, but did you tell us whether such a camera would do that with an EN-EL-15b? I mean, you told us a c would not do it in other models not so equipped, but do we need *both* an EN-EL15c and a model with the USB power enabled feature, or would a b work, too? (I assume an a would not since it doesn't even support in camera charging when the camera is off.) Thanks for this most useful and good news video.
no idea i gave all my en el15s to my daughter . when i was blown away with the en el18s instead of going through two batteries a day ( short outings 4 hours) im using one en el18 a week ,
If only Nikon released this earlier !! I now have 3 of the B type batteries!! But i do feel for stills and cold weather the C would be a worthy upgrade:)
I just bought two EN-EL15c batteries to extend the battery life of my Z7 & to my great surprise, they aren't compatible with my Hähnel PROCUBE2 Charger. It's actually an Olympus version with a Nikon EN-EL15 top plate as all the Pro Cube 2s are the same inside, it's just the colour that changes & the top charging plates are all interchangeable. Has anyone else experienced this or similar problems?
Hi all Having begun my Nikon experience on the D7100, then moving to the D750, arriving this year in the D850 - I'm astounded at the short battery life of the D850 compared to the other 2 camera models. I only shoot stills and I am making use of Live View on the D850 but I'm disappointed at the poor battery life performance. I have Wifi off, removed link to Snapbridge and Airplane mode on because power was being lost when the camera was off! However, I could go weeks before having to re-charge the battery for the D7100 & D750 wheras I'm forunate to have a 6 hour shoot (approx 250 photos) using live view (I only have it on when shooting) on the D850. Does anyone else on here have the D850 and have a similar experience of poor battery life? I'm always carrying a spare just in case.
I'm really pleased with battery life on my D850. It so depends on what you are doing. I use live view for many things but not necessary for a lot of contexts and sometimes viewfinder distinvt advantage. Also, make sure things like continuous focus are off if you are not using that feature (as for landscapes for example). I can take hundreds of pics and last many hours if I am taking landscapes. With bird photography and a very busy autofocus less time.
What I’d really like to know: is it a totally bad idea to put an EN-EL15c in a MH-25 charger? It bugs me if I go buy a new 15b instead because it’s the exact same price as the 15c with a smaller capacity.
I only have the 15a battery rated at 1900mah for my DSLR. Can someone attach a photo f the back of the 15c where it says the mah, voltage, wh, where it's made--China etc?
Hi! Can it be, that my Z 5 is not accepting EN-EL15A or EN-EL15B after upgrading FW from 1.00 to 1.01 or 1.02 (not sure when it stoped working)? They were both working fine but are now not accepted by the camera anymore, displaying an error message ("This battery cannot be used. It does not communicate properly with this camera. To use the camera safetly, choose a battery designated for use in this camera."). The EN-EL15C is working normaly. Both batteries are working normally in a Z 7. What is going on? Any clue?
@@RicciTalks Sure, but I don’t think anyone would’ve complained about a larger grip and much longer battery life on the Z50, plus the compatibility with the larger Z’s.
I bought a D850 a year back which came with a 15a battery, I'm planning to buy the MB-D18 battery grip but as per my Nikon contact he says the 15a is discontinued & only 15c is now available. So now I'm a bit confused can I use a 15a in camera & 15c in the battery grip?
Hi Ricci, I need one help ...I have Nikon Z6 and with that I got one extra EN-EL 15b battery free... Its now out of warranty but the battery while in charging is blinking fast...and when I use it in Camera its not turning on. The other battery is working fine. I use them and I am not a heavy user so not sure what is happening and how so quickly the battery turned bad. I take care of my gear very seriously and using only Nikon official charger or accessories.
Normally when the charger flashes quickly its to symbolise an error in the battery or charger. if the other battery works fine in the chargers then sadly you have a problem with the battery. it being a 15B is it an older battery ?
@@RicciTalks I purchased Nikon Z6 in 2019 in August and got 2 15B Batteries free from Nikon. One was inside Z6 pack which turned out to be the bad. Other one I got later from Nikon separately after registering the Z6.

Sounds like you want to trash your camera and battery. If it's not an en-el15c battery, do you think it's going to recharge? Hey hold my beer and watch this is the title of that Kevorkian experiment.
JR Arsenault The question is in reference to recharging the battery while the camera is in use. The A and B batteries will not do this, but the C + the Z5 will. The suggestion to try the B battery will show whether or not recharging while in use is a feature of the C battery or the Z5 camera itself. If it’s the Z5 that is doing this, then there’s little hope for the Z7 and Z6 cameras to have this feature. However, if the B battery doesn’t recharge while in use, then conventional thinking says it’s the C battery and there’s hope this feature will come to the Z7/6 in a firmware update.
Thanks for the info. Do you think a firmware update to the Z6 and Z7 would be a possibility to add the ability to use and charge the new battery with those bodies?
I do hope it’s a firmware thing and was just waiting for this new battery type. I really can’t think a hw reason why it wouldn’t work as the z6/7 has usb charging
@@RicciTalks Ohh, Bummer. Oh well. i'm anyway glad with the battery life I get out of my Z6, so i'm not losing anything honestly. Will have to see how the new battery fares. Love your videos btw.
It’s the rate of charging the Z6 can charge in camera but slowly.... it didn’t take enough power to keep the camera powered and charge the battery a hardware change in the Z 5 has changed this
So, just to confirm - I can use a 15c in my Z7, and charge it either in camera or in the MH-25a charger ? But both the b and c batteries cannot be charged in camera at the same time as using the camera. Thanks for all your videos - they're very useful for me as a new Z owner.
Actually depends on whether the USB-C charger used puts out ~18-22W (since the Z7 peaks at 22W using a 15b) whether it be 8v on 2.5/2.7A (PIQ2.0) or 9v on 2A (QC3.0) because then it would gain power over the charger while with less W it would obviously just slowly drain the battery regardless. This is not tested, I do wish @Ricci Talks would be so kind to check the charger he used (If he remembers :P) and if it indeed did use 5V on 2.0/2.5A, if that is the case that means u can charge the Z6/Z7 while in use, using the 15C ;-)
I dont trust in-camera charging and DSLRs dont seem to have battery problems. A power surge can kill a camera. If I need hours of battery life on a DSLR I plug in a N970 or the mains. Only the mirrorless cameras are battery desperate...
If that single feature is that important to you, then I’d move the Panasonic right now. After all, you can’t use this important-to-you feature at the moment. Who knows when, if any, new firmware updates happen for the Z6. Moving to Panasonic is a no brainer in your situation.
Nikon is a *long* way from bankruptcy. They’ve done massive cost-cutting over the years, to be profitable even with slim margins. So that shouldn’t really worry you - at worst, Nikon will become a very niche brand like Pentax, and I don’t see even that happening.
@@Loth-n1v I get you - I bought a Z7 last week, and am moving to Nikon from Sony and Olympus. I'll probably keep some of my Oly stuff, simply because it's difficult to sell it now. Nikon's commitment to the Z-system is quite serious, and I expect it to be semi-complete in the next three years. If they fold after that - well, that doesn't really matter much to me. I'm sure their stuff will be good for at least a decade.
@@Ildskalli Wow congrats man. That's a major move. I'm gonna move to Z5 I think that works well enough for me specially from the em10 system. It was my learning camera and I just want an upgrade. It's enough for me to continue doing landscape and maybe portrait here and there.
@@Loth-n1v Thanks. I was using an A7RII, and thought of moving to the Mark III, but I use a lot of vintage glass and the Nikons support it better. I was looking at the Z5, too, but our local Nikon dealer had a promotion on the Z7 that I couldn't resist (the Z7 + 24-70 f/4 + FTZ for the same price as the Z5 with the 24-200mm) and I looove high-res sensors 😬 Is your E-M10 the first model? If so, you'll be floored by the upgrade. I own a black OG E-M10, and while it's a great camera, there's no comparison in the viewfinder, C-AF, video, and IQ that a camera like the Z5 offers.

Thanks for the info. Do you think a firmware update to the Z6 and Z7 would be a possibility to add the ability to use and charge the new battery with those bodies?
I really don’t think it’s a firmware things it certainly appears to be hardware related
I do hope it’s a firmware thing and was just waiting for this new battery type. I really can’t think a hw reason why it wouldn’t work as the z6/7 has usb charging
Where on Earth did you get hold of this? I've looked everywhere and it's been permanently out of stock.
Do you think that the Z6 and Z7 will get firmware updates that will allow USB Power delivery, Ricci?
Sadly I don’t think so ....
it appears to be a hardware requirement rather than a software related.
@@RicciTalks Ohh, Bummer. Oh well. i'm anyway glad with the battery life I get out of my Z6, so i'm not losing anything honestly. Will have to see how the new battery fares. Love your videos btw.
Thanks for watching! Means a lot
I had the same question. Still hopeful it could be added in firmware but who knows.
It’s the rate of charging the Z6 can charge in camera but slowly.... it didn’t take enough power to keep the camera powered and charge the battery a hardware change in the Z 5 has changed this
Much appreciated.
If you stream, you should get a battery dummy so you can connect your camera to wall power. No reason using a battery.
I know this isn't the video for this question but can you answer what crop the z5 would be at if you put a DX lens, specifically for 4k recording?
It will be 1.7x crop
@@RicciTalks Perfect! I was worried it would try to apply 1.5 on top of the 1.7 or at least a portion of it.
Nikon would benefit from advertising better the benefits of the EN-EL15C .
Notification Squad!!
I dont trust in-camera charging and DSLRs dont seem to have battery problems.
A power surge can kill a camera.
If I need hours of battery life on a DSLR I plug in a N970 or the mains.
Only the mirrorless cameras are battery desperate...
If Nikon do not add (firmware update) a powering camera over USB type-C function with EN-EL15c to Z6, I sell my Z6 and move to the Panasonic S5.
Just for that?
What about waiting for z6s and using your existing lenses.? Seems more cost efficient...
Bye.
If that single feature is that important to you, then I’d move the Panasonic right now. After all, you can’t use this important-to-you feature at the moment. Who knows when, if any, new firmware updates happen for the Z6. Moving to Panasonic is a no brainer in your situation.
Should I invest in Nikon knowing it's not doing well financially?
Nikon is a *long* way from bankruptcy. They’ve done massive cost-cutting over the years, to be profitable even with slim margins. So that shouldn’t really worry you - at worst, Nikon will become a very niche brand like Pentax, and I don’t see even that happening.
@@Ildskalli thanks I appreciate it I'm coming from Olympus so... It just worries me

I get you - I bought a Z7 last week, and am moving to Nikon from Sony and Olympus.

Thanks. I was using an A7RII, and thought of moving to the Mark III, but I use a lot of vintage glass and the Nikons support it better. I was looking at the Z5, too, but our local Nikon dealer had a promotion on the Z7 that I couldn't resist (the Z7 + 24-70 f/4 + FTZ for the same price as the Z5 with the 24-200mm) and I looove high-res sensors 😬
Is your E-M10 the first model? If so, you'll be floored by the upgrade. I own a black OG E-M10, and while it's a great camera, there's no comparison in the viewfinder, C-AF, video, and IQ that a camera like the Z5 offers.
If you are using a cage forget about using expensive Nikon batteries. Do yourself a favor and get a blindspot powerjunkie . You can easily do thousand plus photos with one npf
