  • The Nikon EN-EL15 battery has long been the backbone of the D8xx line of pro cameras, however, with the launch of the nikon Z series mirrorless cameras there was much discussion over the life of the EN-EL15 in the nikon z7 and nikon z6 cameras.
    The official CIPA life was between 300 and 400 shots so how is it measuring up and what are the best way to keep it charged?
    We look at the real world performance of a handful of chargers and cables that I have used over time.

    With so many charging options around for the Nikon EN-EL15 series batteries which ones are you using and would recommend?

      very thorough review, thank you.
      But traveling I use the Nikon provided USB cable only, to recharge in-camera overnight from my laptop.
      My GSM also uses USB-C, and came with a data/charge cable.
      One (laptop)charger keeping three items charged.
      Zero cost. Slow. Can download/process/e-mail the pictures via the same cable via the hotel WiFi or the GSM network.
      Taking a charged spare battery as well, never needed it, but sometimes close.
      Here in NL a powerbank is not allowed on flights.
      regards Boudewijn

    The actual review starts at 3:25. From there on, just watch it. Good comparison. I personally bought a charger + 2 no-name batteries from the British Amazon for £27. The brand is Powerextra, but it looks like one of these products that sell under countless names. They work fine. I cannot see battery life being shorter. Have been using them for 2 months, no idea how long they will keep their ability to hold a full charge, but at this price point - who cares. The charger holds 2 batteries, can be connected via USB only, has a small LCD to show how charged they are and charges 2 in about 4 hours. These no-name (or Powerextra) batteries cannot be charged inside the camera, only on their charger or the 1 that comes with the camera, in my case, the MH-25.

      Thanks for the comment, good to hear that you've found some 3rd party batteries that perform on a par with the Nikon ones. I have to say that for some of my other cameras I have used 3rd party batteries and with a bit of careful research it's possible to get some good quality ones as a great price. £27 for two batteries and a charger sounds pretty good with the only functionality drop being in camera charging. It will be interesting to see how many charge cycles they last for which may be the only other downside as you say. Cheers, Adrian

    Really appreciate your efforts in compiling and sharing this video. I'm paranoid about being out on location in the middle of a shoot and running out of gas so I carry a pouch full of backup batteries. Having a means of charging on the go is definitely a plus.

      With you there! Looks like future z-series will also be able to run off the USB C cable for power so long as you have the EN-EL15C batteries which should give another option without the need for a AC dummy battery. Cheers Adrian

    Fantastic comparison video! Thank you for your effort! I travel and I'm out in the field a lot, so I think I'll be moving forward with the NiteCore UNK2 because of the light weight and flexibility.

      Thanks Mike, it's the one that I seem to reach for most when I want lightweight and so far has worked well.

    Very useful information, Adrian. Thanks a lot for the testing effort. It was something I kept wanting to do but never got around to testing my chargers and batteries. The Z6 definitely consumes more power than the D800 and D850 but I don't mind taking a few batteries on every shoot because much of the extra power is for features not needed on the DSLRs. I sold my D850 because it sat on the shelf too much after getting the Z6. The recovered funds will go to a Z7 to add to its little brother(of the same size) or save for the 70-200 2.8 S due out this summer or fall.
    Another interesting test that might take awhile is battery life with different settings, for example back screen only or EVF only, with and without bluetooth or WiFi. I am not getting 1500 shots but I use both the evf and back screen too much when all I need is the EVF. I use a WT-7 high speed wireless adaptor for events that has its own battery so it does not impact camera battery life. Those who shoot burst or more rapidly seem to get a lot more frames on a charge but I almost never use burst and instead just pick my shots and can do a theater event or 6-7 hour wedding with 500 frames. I guess my film experience taught me to make each count;>)

      Totally agree with regards to learning on less sophisticated cameras meaning that you have a style that isn't just shutter heavy. I rarely shoot in high speed mode unless like today I am shooting birds like red kites which move pretty fast. Glad you found the video useful, it was real world rather than scientific because there are so many variables on battery life especially on what drains it rather than charging it. One thing that I have found that has a big impact, not surprisingly, is using snapbridge in the background. Might have to leave those kind of tests a bit longer! All the best, Adrian

    Excellent review. Many thanks! I would mention another option for in-camera charging: usb-c cable and power bank (rechargeable, power delivery (PD) type) which works great on the go.

      michelmond Anker Powercore slim pd 10000(which is newest version from Anker) can charge z6/z7. And it shows great result that is little bit better than original mh-25a.

    It would be nice to plug the Nitecore to a solar panel and see if it works...

      That would certainly be interesting. Sadly in the UK we lack the rays most days to even think about a solar panel powering an LED 😜

    I can use my Old MH-25 charger for charge the nikon z6 battery? & I can use the battery of the D800 (En-el15) in the Z6?

    • @AF8Images
      @AF8Images  4 роки тому

      Yes, the batteries and chargers are compatible except that the older model batteries can't be charged in camera👍

    I'm sure that you already checked out nitecore homepage, then you get information about UCN2 PRO for canon LP-E6 series. Have you thought about 'Why not UNK3 PRO for Nikon? Pro charger uses QC technology for faster charging so 3h 20m for 2 EN-EL15 Series. Would you get in touch with Nitecore so Nitecore produce QC enabled charger for Nikon EN-EL15(b)?

    • @AF8Images
      @AF8Images  4 роки тому

      An interesting point, it could be a limitation of the Nikon batteries vs Canons or that the UNK2 will be updated also. But the difference is 1200mA QC vs 1000mA for normal so it may not have as dramatic effect?

    • @donghyuncho5861
      @donghyuncho5861 4 роки тому +1

      @@AF8Images In my opinion, simultaneous charging is the point. I have Nikon D610 and D850 (2body), so if all of my batteries are going out, I can use all of my camera just after 30 minute(both of camera has 15% batteries). But if you have only UNK2 charger, just 1 battery that is 27%. If you want to charge 2 batteries, you have to concentrate changing battery. one action is removed when you use QC enabled dual charger. Nitecore know about this, so they introduce UCN2 PRO and UCN3 simultaneously.

      Interesting analysis. I tend to carry two chargers for safety but also parallel charging. Hopefully in future Nikon will have circuitry to allow charging while using. Luckily I have an ac adapter for studio based work which works well.

    Hi Ive just bought a Z7. Is there any way to remove the UK 3 pin plug from the Nikon in-camera charger to presumably reveal two flat US plugs ? I seem to remember a video showing how to remove the UK plug from a different Nikon adaptor on You Tube a year or so ago.

    Hi,
    he writes because I have a question, namely, what would I have to use the power supply for Nikon d800 to be able to use it all the time, I mean connect it to a contact and be able to turn it on during power supply?
    Please help me

    • @AF8Images
      @AF8Images  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the question. If I understand you correctly, what you would need is the Nikon AC adapter that replaces the EN-EL15 battery and plugs into the mains. It comes in two parts: the EP-5B and the EH-5D. It's expensive, but you may be able to pick one up used. Hope this helps. Adrian

    How is it that you can charge a 7.2v battery from a 5v charger and yet have full charge?

    • @AF8Images
      @AF8Images  5 років тому

      The charger contains a transformer or similar that adjusts the voltage, similar to a mains charger which changes 110/240v to what the battery requires. Or at least this is my assumption, I'm sure it's a little more complex circuitry though. Hope this helps👍

    Hello,,
    HEY...AF8IMAGES ,...WHAT About the Original Nikon =>"" EN-EL15 "" with No Letter at its End Of Its Model # & Then The Nikon EN-EL15"A"
    Will Those 2 interchange In Camera Bodies?//= And ALSO Fit in The Same Camera Bodies as The BEN-EL15"B & The EN-EL15"C ?
    in Other Words I Always Thought That "The First Original =>" EN-EL15 "" IS Compatible Wise & Work in All The Same Places
    as Those TRAILING Of Letters behind The EN-EL15 Series? YES? NO?? OR YOUR NOT SURE?
    THANK YOU In Advance :-)
    C,P,

    If charging 1 battery takes 1,5h and 2 units takes twice that time. Where is the advantage of being able to charge 2 at once?

      If you put the batteries on then go to bed you wake up to two charged batteries instead of one.
