Building an electric saz

- This was an unusual project for me. I was asked by Sal Ormandji to build a prototype, solid-body electric saz. A saz is a traditional Turkish instrument. In this video Sal and I talk about the project and his first impressions on playing the finished instrument. At the end of the video Sal demonstrates what an electric saz sounds like.
İt was my idea when i was child, now u did it :)
Those Guitar Machine heads also let the strings come into the headstock at a steeper angle over the nut
Love the sound.
Brilliant!!!!
Nice sound, I am actually impressed cause ur a stranger playing my instrument i mean an instrument from my kultur
Hi Rony, Thankyou, I am actually Turkish Cypriot and have been playing since the age of 9, I plan to launch my SazCo Saz Guitars for all the world very soon. Thank you.
fuck you
The advantage of the tied on frets is you can move them for different makamlar. This instrument will be limited in which makam it can play, won't it? How many can be played with this fret pattern?
(And maybe I should clarify the context of my question. I'm a little familiar with Turkish and Arabic classical music with their makam / maqam system, and not familiar with saz traditions. And maybe this is a totally different genre and does not have the same considerations of makamlar, but I'm curious how it relates.)
I'm no expert, myself but as far as I know: You USUALLY do not need to move the frets around. It could be done for fine tuning and setup. And there are traditionall local styles that have a few more or less of the frets. But if you go buy a common Saz they all have the same pattern. As far as I know "makam" relates more to "scale" or "mode"? Since the Saz has all the "normal" western / guitar frets PLUS additional frets it works for all western scales (blues scale, dorian, whatever) and makams without the need to change the frets around? I guess. I mean the makam/mode mostly defines which frets to use and not to use in one song... I GUESS o_O ... the songs on Baglama I learned so far only use the B and F microtones anyways.
If you Google "caglama" you would find this design is in use as early as 2004.
Hello Flame Guitars, I am thinking about making a saz style temperament instrument for myself. Would really appreciate if you could share the fret calculations - my biggest concern at the moment. Thanks for great vid.
Do you have a fret plan? I also want to make a Saz for myself.
