Definitely the most inspiring of all the surf videos I've been watching. You can feel the soul in his surfing. Well I guess the music doesn't hurt either. Can somebody tell me the board he is surfing or at least the style of longboard. I'm just getting into it and this thing looks versatile.
I'm not too much into performance/agressive longboarding but i do appreciate the fact that this guy is smooth with his cutbacks, has good footwork and isn't jerky with his hands flying all over the place. I'm more of a traditional longboarder. In southern California (i'm in San Diego) we are mostly about big log noseriders made from your local shaper. We keep it old school. The only people that are "ripping" it up out there are short boarders, We believe in glide, smoothness and getting 10.
Ya I am a progressive longboarder and I totally get what you mean, and I do agree. I have plenty of respect for shortboarders but it is definately a little bit harder to surf a longboard in that style. The reason we do that is because some people want to have the turns and the same pace as shortboarding but they like to challenge themselves and perform those shortboard maneuvers on a longboard.
Finally after 4 years found a T&C Rapoza board as in this video. mine is a poly. The thruster setup comes in handy when you sometimes have to get ahead of the closeout here in Hawaii. I've always liked Dane's style of surfing!
If I could like this twice I would. Hey Dane I've been surfing for 25 years and you still surf better than I do, if only a bit. What shows through in this video is that you're not spastic in the most critical parts of the wave, even when you dug your rail/tail too hard(your board is too good) you just went with it as a stall at the top and let the circumstance dictate. In addition you have more skills in your portfolio at your disposal than most in the afore mentioned dictated circumstance.
sick, i used to ride one of those boards. amazing boards but i just picked up sponsorship from stewart surfboards so im on them now days but that board improved my surfing so much
@rashb his board is a 'Surftech Town and Country K Star', its surftechs most progressive longboard, I have one myself and its very light and responsive though unforgiving of small mistakes,
@kingbarry111 I think it's more than just that. I mean he is pulling a lot of moves that are impossible on a shortboard. It looks nothing like shortboarding and nothing like longboarding either. It's pretty cool...
ya true. like i said though its different. i ride both so if i wanna throw it around i ride a shortboard.if i wanna cruise i longboard, especially now in summer. and sometimes doing turns gets old for me, but everyones different i guess
@get10s want some ketchup? you can turn on a longboard and it looks way better when the turns are smooth and you go with the wave instead of trying to tear the wave into pieces
Also no i dont agree with this being too short board influenced ... You see, people draw to much influence from the past in what they do, so become stuck in their ways. They also attach too much riged lifestyle values to the sports they do, so when i short board, long board, body board, wake board and wake surf, snow board and skate, i mix moves from all those sports into my classic approach ...Just for fun!! I dont think i'm cool just cuz i stick to one sport or one style ... Mix it up
Please will someone with progressive longboard ability's put the meyerhoffer longboard (Freaky hybrid short board/ longboard) on G.S.I.com through its paces then post the vid on youtube. All the people who test ride or demo that board that is meant to be surfed radically, surf it like grandpa! Dane Pioli if you read this PLease do it.

what is not cool about doing all the move's you can do on a shortboard on a longboard? i dont understand why surfing these days has to be put in categories. i personally prefere riding longboards because i can do almost has much as i can do on a shortboard, turns etc but i get the extra paddle power.
@IhateyourVIEWS Its mainly because all of the "cool kids" are riding shortboards. What the mainstream public is lead to be the norm becomes what is believed as "fact" by most.

Dane - keep donig what you're doing - the log repertoire isn't set in stone - nor should it be....i think your surfing's inspirational.

I'd say this guy is smooth and excellent to watch - dunno why some people are aesthetically opposed to improvements to the longboard repertoire....
