  • Gillian Anderson plays Margaret Thatcher in The Crown. This scene is from the end of season 4 episode 2, wherein she informs the Queen through poetry that she doesn't mind having her for an enemy.
Original quote by Chartist poet Charles Mackay:
    / you-have-no-enemies-yo...
You have no enemies, you say?
Alas, my friend, your boast is poor.
He who as mingled in the fray
of duty that the brave endure
must have made foes. If you have none,
small is the work that you have done.
You’ve hit no traitor on the hip.
You’ve dashed no cup from perjured lip.
You’ve never turned the wrong to right.
You’ve been a coward in the fight.

I believe this scene also serves to criticize The Crown itself ; its fundamental policy, as demonstrated throughout the show, has been to make no enemies, to engage in no fights-right or wrong. For the entire show this policy has been presented as a necessary evil for the preservation of the Crown, the stability of which is proclaimed to be for the greater good for the British people. But by taking no stance or position on anything, Elizabeth, The Crown, has been "a coward in the fight", as Mackay says in the poem. Thatcher inadvertently calls this out in this scene, which is why after the poem, the camera hangs on Elizabeth for a while, who has a slightly uncomfortable expression on her face as she realizes this. This was subtle detail that really makes this a fantastic scene

There should be a line denoting the difference between “making enemies” and having other people make enemies of you.
Like Peggy/sharon Carter said “ compromise where you can, but where you can’t, don’t.

Why? The Sovereign is not supposed to have enemies in a Constitutional Monarchy. It is the right of The Sovereign, according to Sir Walter Bagehot's classic 19th century treatise "The English Constitution" "to advise, encourage, and to warn" the Prime Minister, confidentially, on a regular basis, on state matters. Once The Sovereign takes sides in political issues, in public, the aura of impartiality ceases. I don't think Thatcher roasted HM, she explained her view of her postion to her.

The wrong Queen Elizabeth was paired with Thatcher. Separated by centuries, Margaret would have been far better placed alongside Elizabeth I (during our times, not Elizabethan) . Now, she was a monarch who was also an Iron Lady of her time, who made plentiful enemies, held her own amongst men (during a time that was far more frowned upon) and always put her nation above all else. I think they would have appreciated each other's views far more.
If I could create a team of strong, brave and patriotic ladies then Boudicca, Queen Elizabeth I and Margaret Thatcher would be on that team.

Although for Thatcher, in the show, this moment was everything - it was also a demonstration of the intense discipline and dedication to her role as Queen- It took everything in her not to respond to Thatcher. It may seem as if she was roasted, but as she so ardently told Charles and was also told by Queen Mary- they must never show a stance, form an opinion. She had no choice but to Scarface that part of her self and sit in silence at the end of the Prime Minister’s very eloquent jab 🌹

    • @Gunleaver
      @Gunleaver 9 місяців тому

Although, the hits she takes from Thatcher on the show, which she so nobly endures, are a result of her forgetting that bit of her duty, and presuming to butt in, perhaps with her own internalized sexism, either in thinking she can take liberties with a female PM, or else, relying on the chivalry that kept prior male PMs from firing back when the queen stepped out of her role during their premierships.
A real low point for Elizabeth on the show was when she decided to fight Thatcher and the employee she used to leak the news of her displeasure got fired to save face, implicitly accusing him of breaking confidence or lying about her feelings, rather than making her opinion known on her behalf to give her the fiction of neutrality.

She made enemies and went in a clear neoliberal direction which faced backlash from traditional conservatives and many see her unwavering direction as her biggest strength. But also as her greatest flaw - one should know when to compromise and when not to - not everyone should be an enemy. And by targeting those closest to her instead of compromising, it was her downfall.

Anderson stole the show I think, and that's saying something. Because not only was she playing away, but she also went up against a slew of damn fine actors. Foy was another favourite. Both these ladies had that ability to make me chuckle solely with the faces they'd put on sometimes. Foy was an expert in being super subtly miffed and sometimes slightly confused, and Anderson, well I don't even know what her expression was exactly, steely perhaps. Whatever it was it was delightful.

The fatal flaw in Thatcher's argument here, is that "the fray of duty" is mingled in by just as many brave but unrighteous people as brave and righteous people. Focusing on the making of enemies and thinking that makes one righteous is a fallacy - one that Thatcher made a career of, as she redistributed wealth from those who make it to those who hoard it.
