Dude, the end of the video where Steven Spielberg got his first Oscar win from Schindler’s List is monumentally insane. It’s a true success story that’ll always choke me up for the rest of my life. This doesn't even factor in that he was working on Animaniacs as well around the same time! One thing also worth mentioning is that while filming Schindler's List, Spielberg used to call Robin Williams on the phone and ask him to make him laugh cause the whole process was hard to handle. He watched episodes of Seinfeld every night as well to lighten the mood. When he showed John Williams a cut...John was so moved, he had to take a walk, and said Spielberg deserved a better composer. It will always blow my mind that he was actually able to tackle these two giants within such close proximity. He is truly the greatest filmmaker of all time.
Filming these two movies back to back, supervising the post production and editing one while filming the other for two of those months, and occasionally checking in the Animaniacs team during their story meetings since he executive produced the original show, and all three were able to debut in the same year. Steven is one dedicated artist and that’s what I really admire about him.
Massive massive respect for Steven Spielberg to make Jurassic Park and Schindlers List at the same and that both movies are masterpieces. I cryed because i was so happy that he got his appreciation he deserved. Steven Spielberg is with no doubt one of the greatest filmmakers in film history. Geez that was a ride i love you Steven Spielberg.
How did you make me cry with a documentary? Most talented levels of editing and production I’ve seen for a UA-cam video in so long. I’ll see you in the future I’m sure.
This one-two punch isn't just your every day movies. They are two of the best cinema has to offer. Making what Spielberg accomplished in 1993, the greatest directorial feat we may have ever seen. Thank you for this. Very well done
I'm very glad you're finally getting the recognition you deserve. Before even watching a single second I'm 1000% sure this is gonna be an all round high quality video. Keep it up! ❤️
That was a beautiful tribute to Steven Spielberg and made me cry. I have always loved movies but Steven Spielberg was my hero especially as a teenager, which is when Jurassic Park and Schindler's List came out. I was obsessed with Jurassic Park. I bought a book about how it was made which is one of the few books about how a movie was made the Jurassic Park was so popular they put that out. But I have to say Schindler's List was such a powerful moment for me too because I never quite looked at WWII that way. Most of my introduction to World War 2 was through Indiana Jones. I can honestly say I watch Schindler's List more often than I watch Jurassic Park. But that year was one of my favorite years and it is been a long time since I've cared about who wins an Oscar or not. Back then the Academy Awards was my Superbowl. It was such an emotional Oscars that year, more than many other years
This right here, the fact that he could create both of these movies simultaneously -- one, a crowd pleasing, technical and and virtuosic popcorn movie, and the other a solemn, important, deeply personal arthouse film -- this is why Spielberg has no rival and is the greatest filmmaker of all time.
Your video is a piece of art. Grapping like a documentary, almost forcing you to burst to tears in the end. This is the highest standard of content that I've seen on UA-cam in many, many years. Thank you so much.
The amount of time and effort you put into every minute of your videos really shows and they just shine. It truly feels like a gift to be able to watch your content for free. It's such high quality and so full of heart and passion, I would watch you talk about the most mundane topic and be thrilled. Hope the future brings big things for you and thank you for all you do!!
Also keep in mind that Spielberg had his Amblimation studio at this time still running. The feature that was being worked on at that studio the same time as those two films was We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story. And one of the reasons for that film’s production troubles was because of those two movies cramming up his schedule. As much as he REALLY WANTED We’re Back! to work and be a bigger part of that magic, the living hell of working on two movies made it the most difficult part of his or anyone’s entire career!
I rewatch Jurassic park every few years and its still incredibly good, Iconic and defined what a scifi thriller should be. The fact he made it at the same time as another Iconic movie in a completely different genre I have a lot of respect for Steven
Oh my! The viewers reaction leaving the theatre really made me emotional. I cannot even imagine how watching this movie back in the day at the theatre would feel like. The sheer outburst of emotions with a collective audience. Even watching this video made me emotional and also the fact that Spielberg won so many Oscars. What a day would it have been for everyone who had watched the two movies.
1989: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade & Always 1993: Jurassic Park & Schindler's List 1997: The Lost World Jurassic Park & Amistad 2002: Minority Report & Catch Me If You Can 2005: War of the Worlds & Munich 2011: The Adventures of Tintin & War Horse
This list gets even more insane when you know that Jurassic Park started prepping before he did Hook. Also Saving Private Ryan had started some preliminary work before he did Amistad
Jurassic Park was the best theatrical experience of my life. I immediately read the book after seeing the movie. It was the 1st book I read that wasn’t required by school 😆 It’s aged well too, I can watch it start to finish today.

This was a breathtaking piece of work. Well done. I was born in 92 and I'd never heard about this. It never even occurred to me that he'd have done both simultaneously.
I saw Schindler‘s list in 1993 when I was 21 and in college, I went to the University of Kentucky and the hotspot to hang out at that time, was the two keys tavern. I saw the 7 o’clock showing and then at 10:30 went to two keys Tavern and I could not stop talking about this movie. Everyone that I ran into. I told them, “you have to go and see this movie ! You will experience the most intense holocaust, realistic movie, that you’ve ever seen in your life. It absolutely rattled me . half the time of when I watch that movie, I had my hands over my face. It was absolutely nerve-racking.
I hate to be the one to break it to you , but Schindler's list is a work of fiction. It literally says so in the credits , " based on events that could have happened any semblance to actual people is entirely coincidental." Barnes and Noble had to sell the novel under the historical fiction tag.
Dude was probobly one of the only people ever who could have pulled this off. No directer could have pulled off two VERY differnt films at differnt times, let alone doing them at the same time.
I was hoping someone would mention that Robin Williams would call Steven Spielberg once a week during the shooting of Schindler’s list to help him cope with all the depressing subject matter
What an incredible video man! Watched it in my living room on the big screen. Your editing, storytelling, extensive research and structure is amazing. My personal oscar for best yt-video I watched in 2023 goes to you! 🏆
What is even more mind-boggling is that Spielberg would do this all over again in 1997 with The Lost World and Amistad. Now, Amistad’s subject matter obviously isn’t as intense or draining as Schindler’s List, but it’s still insane that he directed two major films in one year TWICE
Theres a reason why Steven is one of the best if not the best director in the world. The man through many problems and came out on top and became a legend. The world will not be the same when he leaves us
Love your style Dodford, and Schindler's List is one of my top 5 movies of all time! Thank you for this, you deserve way more recognition for your amazing work too!
It's not even just that. During the making of both he was also approving characters, voice actors and storyboards for Animaniacs since he was the producer. During Schindler's List, the film was just such an emotional chore to make that Spielberg actually played the voice recordings he'd gotten of upcoming stuff with Pinky and The Brain to help people be able to feel happy again.
Murren took all the credit for the work from Steve 'Spaz' Williams. Spaz championed cgi and made a test in his own spare time even when Murren said he shouldn’t cause Murren wanted stop motion to be the tech. Murren took the academy award and didn’t even let Spaz on stage and went out of his way to not mention him. Watch the doc Jurassic Punk.

This was excellent storytelling man, my hat's off to you
Those cutscenes switching back and forth between Jurassic Park and Schindler's List whilst Steven was describing his experience was ingenious! Great video! Keep it up
Well done mate. A video that perfectly captures the dilemmas faced by artists in almost every sphere of the arts. The fact that Spielberg needed ten years to grow into a mature(r) person/director sums up everything.
Spielberg is an unparalleled filmmaker- to have made two of the most groundbreaking and successful movies of all time in one year, and at a point that was only halfway through his amazing career is remarkable and will never be repeated. I remember at the time a lot of film critics were snobbish and crapped on Schindler’s List, they soon were silenced when it cleaned up at the Oscars and that movie is immortalised forever while those critics are all gone and forgotten and their crappy opinions all forgotten.
My World War II Army veteran grandfather passed away seven years before Schindler's List made it to cinemas. He saw combat in Germany. If Grandpa had lived to see this powerful film then he would have silently wept with compassion for the prisoners and sorrow for all that they were made to endure. My grandfather never cried for anything. Thank you Steven Spielberg for listening to your heart ❤️
I never realized that he actually made those two masterpieces back-to-back. Just the thought is absolutely breath-taking. What an enormous accomplishment. *Very* inspiring. Thank you for this video. Subscribed. :) Greetings from Germany
I'm a historical researcher (I do the research on behalf of historians) and it's something I relate to heavily that's so unbelievably hard to communicate. I worked on a project for a prominent museum that required me to look through hundreds, maybe thousands, maybe more pictures of the Holocaust. Private photos taken by German soldiers with jokes written on the back, the front depicting civilians hanged from trees. A group of soldiers pretending to rape a dead body, and possibly the most haunting, a photograph smuggled out of Crematorium V at Auschwitz-Birkenau, which showed the process of mass cremation in open pits. If he immersed himself in the historical material half as much as I believe he had to create the film, that alone brings a tear to my eye. When you immerse yourself in this stuff truly, it stacks up. At first its not so bad, it's repulsive but tolerable, but eventually it hits you all at once, when you realize that you can't sleep because an image is seared into your eyes. When you are forced to truly confront how horrific it was your human emotions begin to break down, it simply doesn't make sense to the brain, it doesn't compute. Even right now I don't know how to verbalize it, it's just the most horrible feeling. The most shameful part is it's still taboo to discuss today, I imagine it was even more so back then, but it takes a literal toll on your health, I was losing weight from this assignment, I was losing sleep, I had depressing thoughts unlike anything I had experienced in the past. More historians and researchers than you'd think have therapists funny enough. When you watch a film like Schindlers List and Idi i Smotri or any other classic of this type, keep in mind the tangible suffering the cast and crew put themselves through in order to deliver you that film.
A wonderful video essay/documentary/piece of art depicting one of my favorite filmmakers. You've had me in awe with your great content, but this video went far beyond anything I've seen. Well, no actually Netflix is declining. The quality of this is better. But you get what I mean
I didn't know he won either and I felt the same way during the oscars part. I was so happy he won!
@@DodfordYT what book are the quotes from in the video ? I would love to read it
I remember seeing JP in the cinema, I was 13, it blew me away. A few years later I watched SL and it is one of my annual watches, it is a masterpiece. Thank you Steven. Also thank you for putting this together, I can't imagine the stress of going between doing post-production on JP and filming SL for that long.
You watch Schindler's List.......... annually? It's one of those prime examples of a movie that is really good, but also (for me at least) cannot watch again or will have to take a 10-20 year gap between viewings.
@@darkknightniner9862 Yeah I saw SL about 2 years ago and I don't think I will again for a long time. It is quite possiblly the most moving picture I've ever seen, but there's no way I could handle watching it annually.
Two all time classics in one year not many directors can say that.
Can anyone else? Ever?
@@leonoreblain5385 Coppola made both the conversation and the godfather part ii in 1974. both nominated for best picture. Steven soderbergh did the same thing in 2000 with traffic and erin brokovich.
Victor Fleming 1939 Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind
Ingmar Bergman with the seventh seal and wild strawberries in 1957
@@thegrimeliteyes, Bergman was productive beyond comprehension. Apparently he would work frenetically, up until the brink of breakdown, and then turn himself in to a hospital, where he would be treated for fatigue and burnout. This would then repeat cyclically.
In addition to Sandler cheering the crew up, let's not forget Robin Williams also chiming in with his joke calls during his VA sessions on Aladdin that helped lift the mood too.
Your storytelling is unmatched. Had me shedding a tear at multiple parts of the video. I haven't seen this high of quality everything in a video in a WHILE. Congrats on all of your recent success, VERY MUCH DERSERVED!!!
I'm so glad! Thank you 💛
Agreed!
The editing is unmatched. It's as if this was actually made by one of the movie directors
No exaggeration, one of the best UA-cam videos I've ever seen. Was in genuine tears by the last 5 minutes. You told the story incredibly, and the editing was beyond TV documentary-worthy.
I've been SEARCHING for a video about this specific point in Steven Spielberg's career, and you made this in the best way possible. THANK YOU! It will always blow my mind that he was actually able to tackle these two giants within such close proximity. He is truly the greatest filmmaker of all time.
Same it blew my mind how he could create to such giants in one year, so it was good to learn about it.
They have one thing in common: They're both masterpieces
Nah. One is a masterpice and the other is a fun blockbuster.
@@rodycaz8984 a fun blockbuster doesn't mean 'a non masterpiece'

you just made me watch 17:33 minutes and make me feel like it was 3. Incredible
And to the 6 million who can't be watching this broadcast tonight of the 1 billion,
A truly classy man
How did you make me cry with a documentary? Most talented levels of editing and production I’ve seen for a UA-cam video in so long. I’ll see you in the future I’m sure.
The same happened to me!!
Keep it up! ❤️
Wow, thank you! Glad you’re here 🫶
That's called commitment to your art. Thank you Sir Steven for grinding hard to make us such beautiful films.
I just watched this entire video. Great work!
When watching a 17 minute video in full becomes a feat you know our attention spans are fucked
@@usernamesta3334 Was just about to comment that before I saw your comment 😂
Now go watch the entire movie. 3Hr+ depression.
Amazing accomplishment buddy
This all sounds strange
You never miss!! The editing is off the charts. Your storytelling is amazing. Thank you Dodford.
I rewatch Jurassic park every few years and its still incredibly good, Iconic and defined what a scifi thriller should be. The fact he made it at the same time as another Iconic movie in a completely different genre I have a lot of respect for Steven
Steven Spielberg will always be an inspiration, an icon and an important figure in the world of cinema for a thousand more generations to come.
1989: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade & Always
1993: Jurassic Park & Schindler's List
1997: The Lost World Jurassic Park & Amistad
2002: Minority Report & Catch Me If You Can
2005: War of the Worlds & Munich
2011: The Adventures of Tintin & War Horse
This list gets even more insane when you know that Jurassic Park started prepping before he did Hook.
Also Saving Private Ryan had started some preliminary work before he did Amistad
Also, despite not released in the same year, it had a similar situation. He filmed The Post just when Ready Player One was still in post production
Jurassic Park was the best theatrical experience of my life. I immediately read the book after seeing the movie. It was the 1st book I read that wasn’t required by school 😆
It’s aged well too, I can watch it start to finish today.
Honestly the thumbnail itself told me this video was going to be good but the editing, storytelling and production in general just took it to another level. The engagement and interest I had in this video was incredible and you did all of this with a 17 minute video essay. Thank you so much and a great video!
Spielberg deserves the amount of respect he 100% deserves. Also I met him once and it’s so surreal.
This.
This is what UA-cam is meant to be.
wow 😯
thank you hayden!
When UA-cam best editor acknowledge your effort, you know you have won at life 🎉🎉
Awesome video Danny!!!
And Hayden, when are you going to bring him to the podcast???
i remember reading he requested robin williams after shooting schindler's list at night to keep him happy, and williams did it. rip. and he still delivered 2 masterpieces in one year. genius.
An amazing doc for an amazing story! We appreciate the hours of work you put into these documentaries Dodford because they are truly a treat to watch. Keep it coming! Love to see the attraction coming to the channel!
so glad you’re enjoying! I’m only ramping up. thank you 💛
This honestly looks more like a documentary than a youtube video... absolutely amazing
The editing (and sound design) of this video is absolutely fantastic. You have very real talent and it’s a pleasure to watch. Extremely well-crafted. Incredible work.
You're so criminally underrated, you inspire me to create so much, thank you! Amazing video as always ❤

Impeccable it’s insane how good ur editing and storytelling has been I’m glad the sidemen video u made has led to videos like this
I don’t know if people are gonna believe me, but Thomas Keneally (the author of Schindler’s Ark, mentioned in the video) is my girlfriend’s grandfather. I will definitely be showing this video to him at Christmas dinner!

I was born in 1991 I am 33 this year, but so how I wish I was born in the late 70s early 80s to enjoy Jurassic Park and cry at schindlers list, back in 1993, and clap for him winning in 1994.
You are absolutely killing it, you should be pushing 1M not 100k! Look forward to a year full of amazing videos, the story telling is incredible and the editing is perfect to match it. This'll take off in a few days like the others, your lifetime of preparation clearly is paying off!
Its crazy to think Steven Spielberg made two of his best films, which also happened to be completely different films, in the same year.
Dude, the editing, the storytelling and intercutting is excellent. Great work!
Oh my god what an absolute legend. Which is understatement for Spielberg. I couldn’t help but literally cry when they announced the best picture winner. What a perfect night for him and for film.
I really hope Steven Spielberg sees this. It's so beautifully put together. I'd always known Spielberg had delivered these 2 masterpieces in one year but I had no idea he went through hell to make it happen!
I'm so glad I stumbled on to your channel! Your videos are incredibly well-paced and the story-telling is of the highest level! Thank you for this! You are an auteur just like Spielberg. Instant sub!! 👍🏽👍🏽
I've often wondered this myself. Like did Greta Gerwig watch the episode about her? I've a feeling someone else sees it, and then refers it to them. The've no time for YT.
This was a breathtaking piece of work. Well done. I was born in 92 and I'd never heard about this. It never even occurred to me that he'd have done both simultaneously.
In tears, amazing work. The footage, editing, sound, and story are a pure masterclass.
super
Respectfully, the beginning dramatic cut aways from hitler giving a speech to a t rex has me dead 😭
This video is edited beyond perfection. Very moving story, I’ll watch it a 3rd time.
What an incredible video man! Watched it in my living room on the big screen. Your editing, storytelling, extensive research and structure is amazing.
My personal oscar for best yt-video I watched in 2023 goes to you! 🏆
I always come back to this video whenever I need some inspiration in my life. Thank you Dodford
Insane story and beautifully told! I think if there's one UA-camr to create an oscar winning movie, it would be you 😂🙌
Murren took all the credit for the work from Steve 'Spaz' Williams. Spaz championed cgi and made a test in his own spare time even when Murren said he shouldn’t cause Murren wanted stop motion to be the tech. Murren took the academy award and didn’t even let Spaz on stage and went out of his way to not mention him. Watch the doc Jurassic Punk.
The amount of painstaking work and sheer passion can be FELT in this video. Absolutely immaculate sir 🫡
Just stumbled upon this recommendation in my feed and once finished watching this splendidly crafted video-essay on Spielberg's miraculous year that was 1993, an eternally hot topic among filmbuffs-suddenly realized I'd found an exciting channel! Subscribed. Thanks from India.❤
Your story telling is SO GOOD, absolutely fantastic video!! It's wild that this is free to watch.
These types of videos are inspiring for me because if Spielberg could overcome those types of pressure that were put unto him, then I have to have faith in myself to overcome mine because the pressure that was put on to me isn't a biggie compared to what he has been through.
Both films were masterpieces
The editing (and storytelling) of this documentary are insanely good, truly inspiring. I feel blessed being able to watch these type of videos for free on youtube. Keep doing what you love!
Those were literally amazing. He is an amazing artist and person. The Oscar's part literally had me on the edge of shedding tears. Because he deserved every single one of them. It's genuinely insane and crazy. And like the audience the therapy joke made me laugh because it's honestly completely reasonable after those months he endured doing the two completely different movies at once.
Good story telling. U just don't get bored , it makes u keep watching. Very rare nowadays on UA-cam ngl.
Damn, you're one hell of a documentarian. This is the most precise, well researched, inspired youtube content I've seen in ages. Thanks for making it!
I've been in the filmmaking world for 20 years, and know the chaotic story surrounding Spielberg and Schindler's List mixed with Jurassic Park, but you just told the story so cleanly, in a modern and sophisticated way with real emotional weight. This was excellent storytelling man, my hat's off to you
Those cutscenes switching back and forth between Jurassic Park and Schindler's List whilst Steven was describing his experience was ingenious! Great video! Keep it up
One of the very best video essays I've ever seen
This was a literal documentary
Absolutely unbelievable
Jurassic Park and Schindler's List are both perfect. This is how we know he's a master of film.
Well done mate. A video that perfectly captures the dilemmas faced by artists in almost every sphere of the arts. The fact that Spielberg needed ten years to grow into a mature(r) person/director sums up everything.
Thanks for making this. I've always wondered how he managed to create two movies of such brilliance and release them in the same year.
This video is absolutely fantastic. Keep doing what you're doing. You did an incredible job at showcasing Spilberg's talent and passion.
The ying/Yang creative effort here was truly beastly 👍
And the result was two of the finest films ever made.
Thank you Mr Speilberg 🙏
Subscribed. :)
Greetings from Germany
The retro television graphics, concise script, and intriguing info were just amazing! This definitely inspired me as a content creator!
You can see how thoughtful, practical and intelligent Steven is approaching his craft. Lovely video thanks!
I’m 33yrs old and I always heard of Schindlers list growing up and would always see 5 min clips of the movie but never actually seen it… after this video I’m gonna watch it tonight and update you guys
