I came in to find out about the Silverline bench drill and almost immediately saw Susan cleaning the drill tube in a very suggestive way ... And I told myself it's just me or it seems that Susan is lubricating something else?
*Bought as a gift for my son and his second grade son to use on a Pinewood Derby car. Wanted something relatively safe and able to be packed away when not in use. Worked well. **MyBest.Tools** Easy to use and set up. Case provides good storage.*
Great help iam just looking for small pillar drill and thanks to your very helpful film I will stay well clear of silver line you have more patience than me a new tool should be faultless or back it goes but thanks again. 👍
Brilliantly helpful. Just unpacked the same bit of kit and where I was confused you have shown the answer. Your patience is only exceeded by your humour in the face of obfuscation and lack of direction. BUT is there a follow up on your experience in actually using it? Thank you - you have made my life much simpler for my next stage in assembling it!
I had the same problem with a band saw. But this time, it was actually the micro-switch that broke. It's probably down to transit knocks. You should write to the company, sending a photo of the offending item and ask for a replacement. I fitted it myself saving the time of having to send it back. Plastic things like this always break. I think the top of the drill looks flimsy - hence will move out of alignment, enough to break the plastic.
I had a similar drill press (without the micro switch on the lid). On mine, a set screw for the pulley attached to the motor shaft came loose and dropped through those slots above the motor and damaged the motor. I had to have it re-wound at a local machine shop. Keep your grub screws tight dear.
I bought an identicle Drillpress from ALDI (german discounter) a several years ago. And Im very happy with it. I payed about 90€ and for light and medium use its very good working. I like your Vids, please make more :)
The way I use to make sure the head of the drill is directly above the centre of the table is to use a plumb line. Make sure your drill is on a level surface then clamp a length of thick string in the chuck with a small weight tied to the other end, dangling a few millimetres above the table. Then you can rotate the drill head and/or the table so that the dangling end of the string with the weight on it is directly over the centre of the table. Hope this helps.
Salem Alkhashan Susan you are an amazing lady, I really admire your passion for craft & tools. You did a hell of a job on that piece of junk, Nicely done.
I found on mine the out-of-the-box drill speed is set way too slow, so I'll go back and set that to the fastest possible by moving the band up on-top of both drive wheels in the top cabinet - it does not cut through hard materials as is. Also be mindful of the drill head set to total 90 degrees to what you want to cut into or it drill drill in at an angle, so test the drill piece goes straight down and that the base plate is straight horizontal to help avoid the same issue. Cheap item but can still be helpful to have. Cheers, C.
My only advice to you Dear would be to please secure that drill press down better. It will work better and be much safer! Thanks for your videos. Cheers!! OOOPPPS. Sorry just saw this was wayyy back in 2015. You most likely have a full shop of massive tools by now!! LOL
I too see the suggestive start to this video .... very good. lol. Anyway ... my instructions were unreadable. So ... this video was an absolute necessity for me. Big Thankyou.
John Stanton I’ve three Silverline tools and they have been great for me but I only do light jobs. I have this drill press I mainly use for mortises with no problems, the router table, and bench grinder I use purely for sharpening and shaping tools. I think a lot depends on your expectations and buying the right tool to begin with. You can’t buy a £60 press drill and expect it to have the same performance as a £300 machine. But then there’s no point buying a £300 press if you are only doing work a £60 machine can manage.
just making my wall mounted flexible daylight [50cm x2 6500k (90-100 CRI)] to do my pyrography work during night :) Needed this Silverline as well :) Thanks for this video!
I had exactly the same problem but with the addition of the microswitch being buggered all together. It was delivered yesterday morning first thing and it was on it's way back to silverline at 2pm that afternoon. So disappointed!
+James Powell I think I will replace it at some point. My biggest criticism of it is in the amount of horizontal play - I can't place my drill holes as accurately as I want.
Miss placing the chuck key....pop open the top lid Place a magnet inside the lid then close it. Use the chuck key to locate the magnet, job done permanent home for the key
I seriously grew up playing on this kinda equipment in the shop. Drill press belt gaurds were never on step pulley machines. We weren't just turned loose like a bunch of savages in a shop , but rather were taught respect of tools / equipment , but aloud to let our brains work as well. Me , my brother , a couple of close friends we grew up with. Anyway just saying to toss that belt cover , unless you enjoy magnified rattling noises from the belts and it banging , clanging against it's self after a little use. Something low definitely needs a belt gaurds tho. I'm not say toss common sense. Enjoy your purchase 👍
Hello would someone please HELP me, I bought one of these not long ago and there are two perculiar pieces where I have no idea where they went. It arrived with no instructions so, I put it together from what I saw however, there are two pieces (after reading the instructions) I have no clue where they go and there's no apparent places on the drill from observation. It looks a little bit similar to the spindle in the instructions however, the other piece isn't there. Please help.
Be careful when adjusting the drive belt, for the edges of the pulley box are razor sharp, very poor finishing if indeed there ever was any de-burring.
How did you find the Clarke? I ordered a drill press and a table saw made by Clarke, and I must say the quality is certainly lacking. I don't think I would buy Clarke ever again.
Stephen Pritt I bought two things by Clarke. A belt/disc sander that couldn't sand at 90 degrees because the table mount was too flimsy and a motor I could stop by pressing down on the belt a bit. Other thing was a combi square , none of the heads would fit on the rule. Shocking quality.
Hi Susan sorry, have to agree with Adrian Leveridge I have also bought a few of Silverline products and they are cheap rubbish. Just a bit of advice I am passing on that I was given when I was an apprentice "buy cheap buy twice" if your in the market for a piece of kit hold off awhile and save those extra couple of pounds and buy something with a bit of reputation doesn't have to be the likes of Dewalt, Makita, Bosch or their likes but there are some decent affordable mid range makes out there that will save you some heart ache in the long run check out screwfix they are pretty good for their gear. :-D
I've just sent back a bandsaw because of those micro switches...unlike you I wasn't gonna start gluing bits back on to something brand new. I upgraded to something that didn't have them.
I have one of these- what does the threaded rod with the read triangle do? I thought it was some sort of depth gauge but have not idea how it is supposed to work.
Susan, you are very knowledgeable and capable, you must be an engineer. I enjoy watching your builds but I cringe every time I see you struggling with such crappy power or hand tools. The Triton router is the only exception. If you can afford it, or save up enough to buy better tools new or used your work will be more enjoyable. That workbench has got to go, looks like a kiddie toy. As a woodworker, building a rugged, beech workbench with plans from Veritas was one of my first projects. I would like to build guitars someday, you inspire me.
I will give you the full two thumbs up. These asiatic drills are built to a price point, not to a quality standard. So yes, the table is rough. I have a Clarke drill press similar to yours. It works fine. Guessing but your table has been fly-cut. Cheap. The alternatives are face-milling (piainful) or expensive: grinding or hand-scraping -- *outrageously* expensive. The microswitch: clearly intended so's you can't run the machine with the cover off. This is a piece of EU/OSHA bureaucracy up with which I wlll not put. I removed the chuck guard -- you cannot see where you are drilling with it in place. The depth stop (useful) is a piece of junk and I will have to make a new one. In a fit of pique I tore it out. Anyway, you did it. I am watching your videos back to front so forgive me if I rain on wet ground.
Hi Susan, did have to change the speed after setting up. I'm also sorry they are cheap and rubbish. I've had bad experience this brand and I promised myself that I rather pay more than going for this brand
The way the video started I think someone has a sense of humour!
And I wonder how many people skipped through to that section :)

This gal knows how to handle a pillar!
Great help iam just looking for small pillar drill and thanks to your very helpful film I will stay well clear of silver line you have more patience than me a new tool should be faultless or back it goes but thanks again. 👍
Thank you for taking the time to show the assembly - Great fix at the end!

hi hun i bought this drill brand new some weeks ago.ive just tried to use it but it keeps stopping ?? any suggestions please

Very interesting and ilustrative mini-journey, I´m suscribed now. Nice to meet you Susan.

Susie, do you have a lawn mower?

Silverline has always been value for money for me

Most of the imports are really a project? Seems about half I have had to fix or change or order parts for. You did well troubleshooting!

It's two years on and I'm guessing the Silverline has gone to that great scrapheap in the sky. Not a good brand! Hope you have a decent replacement.
Good video Susan x
i've been wanting to buy a drill press for some time now....for my knitting class.....and here it is. :)))

Looks good , looks like you know what your doing anyway
Best start to a video ever!🤣👍
This seems to be the same drill press as Einhell BT-BD 401, which I planned to buy. But I don't know now... :-)

I was going to get this one from Amazon, but have since ordered the Clarke CDP102B from tool-net for £72 delivered after looking at reviews
How did you find the Clarke? I ordered a drill press and a table saw made by Clarke, and I must say the quality is certainly lacking. I don't think I would buy Clarke ever again.

Shocking quality.

Where,s part 3 for the building from scratch your new guitar ? I was enjoying that then no part 3 ..regards
Do you know how "ajustable spanner" its called in Brazil???

Wow someone is realy reading /folowing the asembly 😀Well done maybe a folow up would be nice using the drill
how price?
I have one of these- what does the threaded rod with the read triangle do? I thought it was some sort of depth gauge but have not idea how it is supposed to work.
+john mcaree It is a depth gauge/depth stop.
I dont see how it works- any chance of a demo?

nice video
All Silverline tools are utter rubbish, I've had a few and they've all ended up in the bin.
Dead right

Is she saying all these double entendres on purpose?
well the drill is a load of shite , however , watching u mess with it was strangely erotic....lol.xx
All cheap drill press HW looks axectly same, only color and name is different ... :)
Fuse first
Hi Susan, did have to change the speed after setting up. I'm also sorry they are cheap and rubbish. I've had bad experience this brand and I promised myself that I rather pay more than going for this brand
The speed can be changed but to be honest I rarely change it. It’s just a matter of moving the belt onto different pulleys
Most men think its cheating to read the instructions
sorry but so funny when it wouldn't work. That sort of thing happens to me
Keep pressing zero.
Get the glue out
Painful
you should'nt start a vid like that lmao
Bosan 😕
