He’s lucky the old Japanese lady walk by. She was probably a very influential lady wife to a commander or general or something. families of high military personnel are often allowed to follow their husbands to conquered provinces and she’s old so she couldn’t be a geisha or some random woman looking for work. Also they wouldn’t have listen to words of a random woman at that time

Looking at how his father and uncle was executed by the japanese, and yet his own life was saved by a japanese women, really goes to show that it is not the nation as a whole that is cruel, it is the individuals.
May the horrors of war never be repeated.
