"Music gear is kind of like toys" is absolutely the heart of "GAS". And that's not a bad thing. We all have a little kid inside us, and sometimes we have to be the adult to that little kid. Sometimes get them what they want. Sometimes say no or not yet. Thinking about the feeling leading to wanting to purchase something is a good idea. Distinguishing between researching synths and making music is another great point. Sometimes when I am "Researching synths" I get a new idea with the current setup. I LOVE the idea about thinking about the heart of what you are trying to get. This is a great video all around. Thank you.

I tend to experience periodic creative blocks and I find that new gear tends to jumpstart the old noggin when nothing else wants to work. Just the act of attempting to learn something new usually helps to get the creative juices flowing. But then I'm not really the type of person who suffers excessively from GAS and I never sell anything, so I'm always careful with my purchases. The good thing about never selling anything is that I might click with a piece of gear years later. Buyers regret isn't really something I experience because I know that eventually everything gets used.
I remember you mentioning you stay away from selling gear, even if you haven’t used it in a bit! And I agree, there is something to be said about the process of learning new workflows and how it can make you think in different ways :)
@@SlowHaste I think it really helps with the GAS, because then I have all this gear sitting around staring at me accusingly. And then I tell myself, alright, I buy something new after I finish an album with ... that synth over there! And by the time I'm done with that, maybe I have decided that I don't need that new thing after all. And then a year later I'm kicking myself because of inflation. There is no winning with GAS ;)
Wow. I can’t get over just how well you’ve articulated my feelings of GAS Daniel. Saying ‘no’ to acquiring new gear is a discipline just like setting yourself down in the studio every day. A while back I was really bad about acquiring all this gear, and rather than selling it off at a loss i decided to make a conscious decision to learn and use as much of it as possible. Turns out most of the stuff I bought and traded for actually does something unique. For example, the Elektron Heat +FX looks sick, but I have a bunch of guitar pedals I can use. I’ve even started blending my gear from my guitar rig into my synth setup. Instead of the Heat, I found a great use case for the Neural Quad Cortex as an effects loop for my Octatrack for example. I’m SURE not many folks are doing that for example. It’s still very tactile and not only fills the need, but also gives me completely unique sounds to experiment with!

As a unreformed gearhead, I'd have to say yeah, you've got it right. You need to buy and try out gear in order to know if it's right for you.
I'm a bit over the studying synths as a side hobby, but I learnt a lot about 'em by studying them.

Some of my favorite tracks I've made are imagining what I would make with a piece of gear I want but don't have. Some of the most trash songs I've made are with the new gear I bought that I wanted forever and realized wasn't it for me lol.

This is an interesting video for me to stumble on, i'm currently considering selling my op1 for a digitone.
I'm having a hard time as i tell myself i haven't put enough time in the OP1 but then tell myself i could create more on the digitone.
I've never owned any hardware before, i started with a daw and a mini midi keyboard but i always get drowned in plugins and daw "headache". Which ends up making my creation process not organic at all and constant musician block.
They are both very fun and very different! I like the Digitone in the context of my Elektron setup, but don’t frequently use it as a standalone piece (although many folks do!)

I've bought a Pam and an eurorack sampler and learned a few cool techniques with the euclidian sequencer; sold all of it and use m4l tools for that now. Now I know what is interesting to have in modular hardware (weird and quircky sound generators that work for improvisation); and what is better in a daw. I still got a nymphes because itt's a nice DAW companion and has a great sound; and I keep a microfreak as both controller and interesting synth. at this point I'm probably set for a while; and this year I'm buying nothing anyway.

Problem is when those demos 1:20 are created by people that got that gear for free by the manufactorer with the purpose of acting like they had bought it even if not contacted by that company. I dare to say that more people dont know why they buy stuff than people that have taken a rational decision before a purcase. If it wasnt for those demos, no one would buy the god damn gear and people would be happy anyway.
Yeah I suppose in that way it’s the same as any other advertising, it’s intention is to spread awareness but also to show off the capabilities of a product in as diverse a way as possible

@@SlowHaste Well they've already got plenty of chips and an oscillator could be called a sausage later - simples !
@@SlowHaste it would be so easy to build that brand too. all the models could be named after foods, and desserts, and you could correlate all the product colors and styles. Excellent idea. Trademark it!
